The Project brief was to design a space that conforms to performative architecture. Performative Architecture is the architecture, in which building becomes a living, breathing, consuming, excreting organism. Its architectural expression, shall not be a static response to its context, but a dynamic one.

And the result of a Solid Dry Waste Treatment Center was concluded based on the evidence of poor management of waste in the current state of the city of Bengaluru which brings us to the concept of DHYASA-CHIT that translates to CONSCIOUSNESS. This Center is located in Varthur Village near whitefield considering Whitefield as the waste collection ward for this plant and aims to increase the efficiency of waste management in whitefield and varthur village through its design features.

The design highlights the importance of community by welcoming the community into the site with the help of biophilia and various community driven pull factors which will be explained further through the design.

It enhances the use of architectural elements to break the stereotype of how a waste treatment center is separated from the community. The main aim of this design is to create consciousness and spread knowledge about one of the city’s leading problems i.e., Waste, its collection and its management.

DESIG N C O NS I D E R AT IO NS The Site is located on Balagere Road in Varthur Village near the Varthur Lake.

The project’s principle aim is to design a waste treatment center that serves a greater purpose than waste treatment and management.

The design consists of a waste treatment plant (which collects, treats, recycles the E-WASTE and METAL WASTE from the IT Companies in the Whitefield Ward and the community of the Varthur Village), an admin block (serving all the needs of the plant and the center as a whole), a community center and a multi-purpose center along with roof garden concept and a retention pond with walking trail to bring in the community.

The design’s focus is to blend a waste treatment plant and community by giving a new architectural typology that accomodates the needs of both.

VIKARATVA HOME OFFICE DESIGN

The project brief was to design a home office that acts a template for any office design located inside a home. The brief dictated that it should be a cuboidal volume pod of 10ft x 10ft x 10ft which can have anything and everything except it should function with 100% efficiency for any kind of line of work.

The cuboidal form is expected to fit into any home and hence the site is taken to be in a modernist home within bengaluru.

The concept of the design is change and hence the name VIKARATVA which is sanskrit for TRANSFORMATION. The design resulted in a multi-functional office design that consists of an elegant white office design with zoned-out architectural elements and office furniture.

This multi-functionality can be effectively used for three different purposes by the user or the client which is explained further.

These aspects are achieved by using a new typology of table which can be rotated upto 90 degrees.

And this multi-functionality is further complimented by applying different kinds of lighting techniques.

Location : Bengaluru, karnataka, India Year : 2021 Architectural Design Project - 6th Sem Category : Campus Design Area : 29132 sq.m (7.19 acres)

The project brief was to design an insititutional campus such as facilities of higher learning.

The studio aimed to try something new and different which has not been done before, not in the indian context atleast.

And this idealogy led to the design of a Building Artisan School which is an educational learning center for different types of arts related to building construction industry such as masonry, bamboo, ceramics, carpentry, weaving etc.

As this concept of a campus is highly unusual, several amount of time was spent on studying how these building construction techniques are carried out in order to design for the same. The campus was designed for user groups who had not recieved a formal education in the industry and also for some who wanted to pursue this as a professional career path and not stick to the same old routine of engineering or medicine as their profession.

It was quite difficult to understand and design for such a usergroup which could be of any age group as this course did not restrict or limit its education to a single age group.

As the design reuqired to concentrate more on the outside, the design concept turned out to be PARISADVAN translating to SURROUNDINGS. The site is located along the line of TURAHALLI FOREST cover on its eastern edge in bangalore towards kanakapura.

The design inclined towards master planning level keeping landscaping in mind and turned out to be more of open spaces and outisde learning centers rather than typical classrooms as the departments of welding, carpentry etc had to be taught more outside and less inside.

The main design apart from landscaping concentrated on the departments of construction industry which were of two levels and it is shown below.

The blocks were in the form of a semi circular pattern with a central space that acted as a leisure space or a study space during examinations. The above level of this central space consisted of common resource block at the upper level which had theory classrooms and toilets.

This design is intended to demonstrate an understanding of landscape design through a small design exercise as studio project. Clarity in design process, detail development and representation of the landscape design scheme is to be emphasized.

The project brief insisted on a courtyard design of 5mx5m for a cafeteria located in Bangalore and this courtyard design should be landscape oriented with a specific concept. The main aim of this design is to give a particular identity to the cafeteria, achieve a higher footfall and keep the users interested throughout their time.

With these requirements in mind, the concept of MAHALAYA came across which means SANCTUARY. And this sanctuary is concetrated on being an aviary which is an area where the birds are kept and encouraged to breed.

So it was all about using architecture to bring birds and humans together and the design needed to reflect a bird sanctuary to achieve the density of bird population on site. The site is located within a cafeteria space and has access only from the same which created a challenege to attract birds in such a small confined space.

The design focused on growing particular types of plants to attract specific species of birds along with a pond, a bird bath and a small waterfall with bird houses and a space for their nests. With a sufficient amount of research on the subject and the right use of landscape elements, the design reflected its concept of MAHALYA which is all together the combination of HUMANS, BIRDS and ARCHITECTURE.

Understand the meaning of CO-EXISTENCE. Incorporation of Architectural and Natural Features would help enhance the courtyard into more of a BIRD Friendly Environment which in turn would help people to interact more with nature and understand how important cosurviving is in today’s modern world.

The intent of the studio was to include projects of urban scale with multiple functions and a need for imagery as one of the architectural goals. The project brief required to design a public library in the heart of an urban structure catering to the needs of all user groups and being aware of the context .

The concept for such a project brief had to come out in regards to the needs of everything in and around and hence the term SANTATA came around which translates to CONTINUOUS. The brief made it abundantly clear that this library is of public domain and hence all such parameters related to the immediate community as well as the overall context of the ubran city had to be focussed upon.

The site is located in Chandragupta Maurya Grounds in Jayanagar, Bangalore which is considered to be the soul of South Bengaluru and hence the design had to reflect the planning and design form of Jayanagar. The design had the implementation of the concept of continuity meaning a free flowing design in terms of visual permeability by the use of glass facaded walls and a central skylight. It also had various community friendly spaces and a central open to sky area which reduced its density although the structure looks heavy from the outside. The design spoke volumes of how architecture can bring the people into a library space in this modern technological era where books are leaning towards obsoleteness and it helped in making people aware of how much a library space is important in the current scenario.

The design brief concentrated on public mobility design in post pandemic scenario (due to covid19 pandemic) considering the changes it brought upon in design perception due to high importance of hygiene and control of disease transmission.

The project brief introduced that society has always been evolving and public mobility spaces are the one’s that help people connect to places across the country especially the bus sector which operates 170,000 busses carrying 70 million or more people everyday. And the objective was to envision the post pandemic reality on mobility spaces and engage the students in redesigning a basic space such as a bus terminus which is becoming a hotspot for transmission of diseases.

The current Majestic Bus Terminus in Bengaluru is considered to be the site and redesigned according to the design brief keeping the requirements of post pandemic reality and user groups in mind and how well the redesign can accomodate to the needs of the current scenario as well as that of the future if any such challeneges arise again.

The existing design has been completely revamped from the semicircular layout to a multileveled circular superstructure as : Bus movement is highly convenient due to a continuous, organic flow.

Visually, the superstructure would portray a completely different approach to design.

Aesthetically, a circle embraces organic harmony.

Existing platforms of the terminus suffer from vehicular congestion, pedestrians intersecting with Bus paths & lengthy pedestrian walkways.

Proposed iteration has segregation of Pedestrian & Vehicular corridors.

MASTER PLAN

The Primary post-pandemic design strategy focussed on, that any illness that ails a human being is far more likely to recover in an environment full of foliage and greenery, rather than in a corporate, synthetic space.

A terminus where your primary sense was that you were in parkland, with many almost collegiate elements— where the connection between what was built and natural was immediate, no matter where you were.

Design Strategies employed :

A workplace where people were open to nature, and the key to that would be modular sections and Platforms for commuting.

Blurring the line between inside and outside, to wake up the passengers’ senses.

Having taken the analogy of Active Transport on a cellular level of organisation in human beings, segregating the bulk components (analogous to proteins) – The Vehicles (Buses) & the minor, flowing components (analogous to active ions) – The Pedestrians; from each other.

This way, an ascending & descending ramp take all the buses to & fro from the superstructure along the periphery.And the inner Pedestrian corridor involves the flow of all the general public, complete with services, amenities and shops.
