BIGGER PRIZE POOL One of Deniliquin’s premier annual events — the Deniliquin RSL Iron Jack Fishing Classic — celebrates its 23rd year in 2020. To mark the milestone, organisers are offering a massive prize pool valued at almosT $90,000, and an additional $25,000 if you land the specially tagged cod during the weekend. The prize pool includes a chance to land one of four boat and motor packages, this year supplied by Deniliquin Yamaha and worth an additional $10,000 combined. The Fishing Classic will be held from Friday, February 14 to Sunday, February 16, 2020. Anglers will have access to 45km of Deniliquin’s picturesque Edward River in which to land their prize catches. You can choose whichever vantage point best suits you within the marshalled fishing zone — whether you fish from the bank, a boat or in the kayak section.

Some of THE country’s best wakeboarders will put on a showcase of talent in Deniliquin this January, with round four of the Wakeboard Victoria CHAMPIONSHIPS to be hosted at Deniliquin Boat Club. One of the newest and most popular locations on the competition circuit, the event is known to attract a capacity number of entrants who flip, roll and ollie in front of an enthusiastic river-side audience.

DENI’S BIG FLOAT A popular summer pastime in Deniliquin is ‘floating’ the Edward River. Young and old alike grab their flotation devices, enter the river at Willoughby’s beach in Deniliquin and float downstream to McLean Beach or another predetermined destination. This popular activity has inspired a new annual fundraising event in Deniliquin, with the second Big Deni Float to be held on Australia Day, Sunday, January 26, 2020. Event co-organiser Telysa Towler said all proceeds from the fun event will be donated to support the Deniliquin Volunteer Rescue Association. “VRA is community focused and always willing to help our community in times of need, so this is our turn to help them continue helping us,” she said. “So, the Big Deni Float has become a classic Aussie event where we go floating down the river and have a great afternoon on the beach, participating in activities and having a snag or two. “We encourage everyone to get involved, because we are supporting a great cause, and supporting fun for all ages this Australia Day.”

The Big Deni Float will start at Willoughby’s Beach in the Deniliquin Regional Park from 1pm, with participants asked to assemble by 12.30pm. Floating groups will depart every five minutes and on arrival at McLean Beach, there will be a variety of fun events. “We will host beach games, a thong throwing competition, yabbie races, sand castle building and sack races which are all $1 per entry,” Ms Towler said. “There will also be a sausage sizzle and refreshments, as well as our new pie eating competition and a giant bubble ball area which is expected to produce a few laughs.” Participants can float on any device they choose, with prizes for the most creative. All Children under 13 must wear a lifejacket and be accompanied by an adult.

“We will have prizes for the best dressed float, best girls and boy floats, best adult men and women floats, best ‘Straya float and a few more great new and returning categories. “We will also have a raft building section after some of the great creations we saw in 2019.” Entry for the float is just $2 per person, payable on the day. There are a limited number of $10 entry packs that include a stubby holder, your entry and a key ring. Bus travel will be available back to Willoughby’s beach at the conclusion of the activities. CHRISTMAS It’s Show Time! Deniliquin’s annual show is a traditional family-friendly country affair. With the show including livestock judging, rides, competitions and games, it’s a fun event intended for all ages and individuals to enjoy.

The Deniliquin Show is proudly run by the Deniliquin Pastoral & Agricultural Society on the first weekend in March each year.

There will also be many kids’ games around the grounds and in Sideshow Alley, where there will be a range of rides to delight teens and adults too.

In 2020, it will be Friday, March 6 and Saturday, March 7 at Deniliquin’s Memorial Park. Equestrian events will be part of the action, and will continue at Memorial Park on Sunday, March 8. Each year, the pavilion is filled with local and district handcrafts, photography and cookery and displays of sculptures from local schools using materials from yesteryear and is a must see for fellow art enthusiasts. The show also features static displays of machinery and vintage and veteran cars. The Riverina Shearing Championships in particular

The Tiny Tots and Junior judging is also a great family drawcard, as is the pet parade. Adult tickets are $15 for a day or $20 for two days, while children aged from 5 to 16 gain entry for $2 each day and children under the age of 5 are free. A family ticket, for two adults and two children, is $30 and gets you entry on both days. The stunning fireworks display will take place after dark and will close the show, and tickets for special entry after 6pm on Saturday night are $5 per person.

VISITORS ARE INVITED TO A great evening of Christmas festivities in the heart of Deniliquin, in the Waring Gardens, on Sunday, December 15.

The fun starts with the Edward River Community Christmas Party, and will be followed immediately by the town’s famous Carols by Candlelight event. The Christmas party will begin at 4pm, with a range of free activities for the children. There will be the Chair-o-plane ride and a Disney Cars themed jumping castle and slide. On the success of last year, the make your own Christmas bauble craft station will again be available, and of course Santa will be handing out lollies. When he’s not roaming the gardens and speaking with the local children, Santa will be posing for family photos. Sittings are free, and will be in the rotunda in the centre of the gardens. And lollies will not be the only indulgence on the day, with a range of food trucks to choose from. Deniliquin’s Carols by Candlelight is a veritable smorgasbord of local talent each year. Organised by Deniliquin Rotary and sponsored by SunRice, the popular community event will begin from 7pm. Enjoy some great traditional Christmas music from Edward River Concert Band, Sophie Butcher, Deniliquin band Ruby Saltbush, Deniliquin Sing Australia Choir, and the Con Spirito choir. It’s always a great family night, so bring along a camp chair or blanket and enjoy a great night in our beautiful park. The concert is free to attend, and candles and glow products will be available for purchase. Catering options will also be made available to those wishing to stay on in the park following the close of the Edward River Community Christmas Party. At the end of the Carols by Candlelight concert, an impressive fireworks display will shoot up above the Waring Gardens to finish the night.

1950s nostalgia Red Rose Diner in Deniliquin is more than just a great spot to grab a meal. It presents a full dining experience, with a nostalgic 1950s setting. Open between 8am and 4pm weekdays and 9am to 2pm Saturdays, the diner offers up a scrumptious traditional breakfast, a filling lunch and some tasty morning and afternoon tea treats. Menu items include eggs and bacon or waffles for breakfast, and melts, rolls and burgers for lunch.

If you’re after a treat, the range of regular and gourmet milkshakes is a great choice. Popular gourmet flavours include the Malteaser, Candyland, Salted Caramel, Minted Oreo, Bananarama, Ferrero Rocher, Rockyroad or Mars Attack milkshakes. For those needing a caffeine fix, there is barista made coffee.

As eye catching as the menu is, it’s the diner’s decor that will initially draw your attention. After the warm greeting from the staff, the first thing you will see after walking in the door is the Elvis Presley and Marilyn Monroe memorabilia, old school number plates and nostalgic 1950s advertising signs. The furniture is red

with white racing stripes and includes some old-school booths. A highlight is the counter which features the front of a Chevrolet car, adding to that diner aesthetic. Red Rose Diner is located at 337 Cressy Street, Deniliquin. The diner also has a food van and can be seen at various local events.

COMMUNITY MARKET IN THE GARDENS The Lions Community Town Market is the perfect place to do a bit of shopping this summer with an assortment of stalls, live entertainment and fresh foods, all located in the centre of Deniliquin. The market is traditionally held the fourth Saturday of each month in the Deniliquin Waring Gardens from 8am until around 1pm.

Have someone else cook your breakfast and enjoy barbecue delights like egg and bacon rolls, sausages, steak burgers and hotdogs. Quite often you will also find mini Dutch pancakes, icecream, waffles and donuts to please your sweet tooth, as well as barista made coffee for a caffeine fix. Edward River Council This region is made up of several towns — Deniliquin, Blighty, Conargo, Booroorban, Mayrung, Pretty Pine and Wanganella — all within driving range to a summer fun activity. New Sculpture Added To Trail

‘REUTILISE’

Deniliquin has a new attraction enticing locals and visitors alike to make a stop in George St — the ‘Reutilise’ sculpture. Made from recycled metals by Deniliquin artist Stuart Taylor, the amazing sculpture replaces the mosaic TransmUTE which has been on display adjacent the Visitor Information Centre for 10 years. TransmUTE is now headed for the new ute museum at the Deni Ute Muster site, which is expected to be completed in late 2020. The life-size Holden ute replica in its place was commissioned under a joint project between Edward River Council and The Long Paddock. It is Mr Taylor’s largest piece of work, and highlights his signature style of repurposed scrap metal. “The sculpture took about three months to build and I also made a smaller model which is on display at the Peppin Heritage Centre,” Mr Taylor said.

Take the kids to Billabong Ranch Billabong Ranch Adventure Park is a great place to spend a few hours OR SEVERAL DAYS when you are on holidays in the Southern Riverina. Get out and paddle the

MIGHTY MURRAY Enjoy the gentle splash of oars and creak of river red gum branches as you explore the mighty Murray River by paddle power. All four canoe trails in the Murray Valley National Park and Barmah National Park have easy water access, and boast some amazing natural sites you can enjoy along the way. These Ramsarlisted wetlands are a haven for waterbirds and great for fishing. Whether you’re out for a leisurely paddle or purposely trying to get a good work out, these four trails will suit your purpose. The Picnic Point to Barmah Lakes day visitor area trail measures 17.4km, and a one

way trip would normally take about 3.5 hours to complete. Push off from Picnic Point and follow the mighty Murray downstream through the mouth of Barmah Lake. If you’re so inclined, you can stop by Swifts campground for a picnic. The next leg is from the Barmah Lakes day visitor area to Rice’s Bridge, which measure less than 3km. Paddling downstream to Rice’s Bridge you can explore Broken Creek and the bridge, before returning the same way within 30 minutes.

Another option from the Barmah Lakes day visitor area is the Barmah Lake loop. It is about 5.3km and takes about one hour and 20 minutes. A longer loop leads to the lake’s upper reaches, thick with reeds. Feel the breeze on your face as you canoe downstream to the town of Barmah. The one way trip is just over 11km from the lake’s day visitor area and should take just more than two hours. The Murray River is safe and best to paddle when water levels are between 1.4m and

2.4m. The river becomes too shallow below 1.2m and water levels above 2.7m are considered dangerous. Barmah Lake is best to paddle when water levels are between 2.2m and 2.8m. It becomes too shallow below 1.9m and water levels above 3m are considered dangerous. You’ll need to bring your own canoe or kayak, but hire and shuttle services are also available. Spectacular life sized sculptures made from old farming equipment and scrap metal showcase the artistic talent and uniqueness of life in rural Australia. Under the main street verandahs, 400 etched heritage pavers depict the social heritage. Greens Gunyah Museum includes collections on pastoral kings and settlers, village growth, the war years and an extensive machinery display. Of note is the newly opened Tim Fischer AC Gallery. Housed in the museum is the Doris Golder Wool Art Gallery. It showcases incredible sepia-like portraits and pictures made from 100 per cent natural wool. See nature at its best on a Kingfisher Cruise River red gums are known to change colour regularly during the summer months, and paired with the patterns formed on their bark it is a painter’s delight. Buds begin to form into beautiful creamy, yellow flowers and the native bees happily enjoy the flowers. Even the non-native willows along the Murray River are full in foliage and the beautiful green colour adds a wonderful contrast to the summer forest. Your best vantage point to see nature at its best is on a Kingerfisher Cruises vessel. Kingfisher travels the narrowest section of the Murray River between Albury and the ocean, called the ‘Narrows’ or the ‘Barmah Choke’. In this section the river travels at almost twice the normal speed, and it is where the Murray River separates Victoria’s Barmah National Park from Murray Valley National Park on the NSW side. Combined, the area ranks as the world’s largest stand of river red gums. The forests are a wildlife haven for

“The forest is full of natural noises and amongst the cicadas we also hear the sacred kingfisher who has returned from northern Queensland and Papa New Guinea. “Snakes are active and the red belly black is always a highlight for passengers. It is an elegant snake as it swims along, just gliding with the current. “And that’s only the start of the wildlife you could encounter, Benita said. “It is also during the summer months that birds of prey like whistling kites and sea eagles are more active, as nesting is over. It’s great to watch them in the thermals and teaching younger birds how to hunt. “Koalas sleep the days away in the foliage of the trees, tawny frog mouths keep a

watchful eye on us all and the cormorants and darters spend the days fishing and drying wings. “Nankeen night herons have returned and are also a passenger’s delight. The beautiful brown rusty birds sleeps during the day, but as we quietly cruise along they become disturbed and put on spectacular show for us all. It’s such a wonderful time of year for a cruise.” The two-hour public cruises operate Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday. XTRAVAGANZA It is one of the premier events on the Finley events calendar, and the ideal way to ring in the festive season with the local community. The annual FinCity Xmas Xtravaganza will take over Finley’s Railway Park for at least five hours of fun and games Saturday, December 21, from 5pm. Incorporating Carols by Candlelight, the event will run through until about 10pm. The fun includes the final draw of the Finley Shopping Bonanza from 7pm, which will offer up to $1500 in prizes to anyone who has supported a local participating business in the lead up to Christmas. Twilight Rodeo Action Imagine what it feels like to sit atop a powerful bull, adrenaline running through your veins. The noise from the crowd has dulled and you can feel every breath the bull is taking beneath you. The rope is rough against your hand but you’re focused on that moment when the gates swing open and the ride begins. Never been to a rodeo? Then head along to the 36th annual Finley Rodeo on Friday,

January 3 and see firsthand some blood pumping, bullbucking action. The Finley event is one of the region’s major rodeos for the year and is held at the Finley Showgrounds.

Cowboys and cowgirls will gear up to compete in the Rod Harris Memorial Open Bull Ride, junior bull ride, saddle bronc, bareback, steer wrestling, roping and barrel race events.

A twilight event, Finley features the best bulls and broncs from Australia’s legendary rodeo stock supplier Gary McPhee.

There will be plenty of entertainment for the kids, as well as a bar and food area which has a strictly no BYO rule. Gates open at 5.30pm, action begins at 7pm, and

live music will kick off at the conclusion of the arena events. Tickets are $30 for adults and $60 for the family (two adults, two children). Individual junior tickets are $15 for teens aged 13 to 17 and $5 for 7 to 12 yearolds, with children under six free with an accompanying adult. Aged pension tickets are $20.

Unique Museum Experience There’s a new tourism attraction in Finley which explores the town’s rich manufacturing history. Finley Foundry Museum was opened in October 2019, and is a celebration of the long association local business JT & EN Close has had with the district community. Display items include a wagon and sulky manufactured at the foundry, as well as a patented One Way Disc, wagon wheel parts and moulds. The equipment used to forge the items are also on show, as well as the furnace and belt driven machinery such as drills, bandsaws and other historical items dating back more than 126 years.

The museum is dedicated to the original founder and owner JT Close, for the work he did establishing the business and the impact he had on the district. It has been established by his great grandson Graeme Close, who still operates the foundry under the name JT & EN Close Engineering and Steel Fabrication. “We want to share the history, because we believe this is a truly unique experience in our region and beyond,” Mr Close said. “The exhibit has been developed from family archives, foundry equipment and products, some of which have remained

on site since the very early days of the foundry’s operations. “We also have a belt driven motor and working Hornsby engine from 1911, old carts, wagons, employment records and other historical items. “After 126 years the business is still flourishing and is now guided by the fifth generation of JT’s descendants.” The museum is located at 48-52 Wollamai Street, Finley and is open from Monday through to Friday, and at other times by appointment. The Finley Modified Tractor Pull’s enthusiastic committee has once again organised a night of exciting family entertainment. The 19th annual tractor pull, which kicks off at 5pm, is always a major event and historically has attracted more than 1000 people.

After a tasty barbecue lunch, you could take a peaceful walk along the river or enjoy a cooling dip. If you’ve brought your fishing rod along, you can try your luck at a spot of fishing. For those interested in local history, it’s also the site of the river punt, constructed in 1889 to carry people and animals across the river. With its 18 manicured fairways and true greens, Deniliquin is a shining example of Australia’s magnificent golf courses. It is also in a superb location on the edge of Murray Valley Regional Park, yet just a stone’s throw from the centre of town. By modern standards the course is not long – 5817 metre par 72 for men, and 5118 metre par 72 for ladies. However, off the back tees it is a challenge for all levels of player, as many professionals who have tried to tame the course have discovered. Poor shots find the huge trees that line most of the couch fairways, while the greens are fast but true and always in great condition.

BEST FISHING SPOTS A lazy day by the river with a fishing rod would be a great way to spend a summer’s day. Deniliquin fishing expert Rhys Westcott said in the Deniliquin area we are so lucky to have a wide array of fishing and boating opportunities close to town. Following is his advice on how to make the most of those opportunities. Whether you’re staying for a week, a few days or just the night, or fishing the Edward River, Billabong Creek or the Yallakool Creek, all your needs are well catered for with numerous caravan parks and camp grounds here in Deniliquin and surrounding areas. The Edward River hosts some amazing fishing water — from the Four Post Camp site where the river is narrow, snaggy and the water runs fast and which the big Murray Cod love, through to the Lawson Syphons area where there is a great boat ramp which has been recently upgraded with a floating pontoon. From your boat you can check out the Mulwala Overflow just downstream from the boat ramp; it’s an amazing sight when in full flow. The Twin Rivers reserve is a great place to camp just out of town with a nice sandy beach and boat ramp.

Heading downstream into town is the Willoughby’s Beach camp ground. This area has numerous camping sites, sandy beaches and new boat ramp for easy access for those wishing to launch a boat. There are also plenty of spots to walk and cast a line in from the bank, continuing through to the centre of town, where the fish always seem to be on the bite. Catches like the mighty Murray Cod and yellowbelly, and the pesky carp, are common if you have the patience. There are some great accommodation sites right on the water, including Riverside Caravan Park, McLean Beach Caravan Park and the BIG4 Deniliquin Holiday Park. While in town be sure to drop in to see Chappy at Deni Sports Centre (in Cressy St). He has you covered when it comes to all your fishing needs from rods, reels, lures and bait and all the right info to catch the ‘big one’.

Or once you’ve stocked up on your grocery supplies from Central IGA, pop across the road to the Betta Home Super Store. Pete is the man to see for all your fishing and camping gear, and a huge range of lures, rods and reels, bait and tackle. West of Deniliquin, about 18km via the Wakool Rd and heading towards Stephens Weir, you’ll come across a great camping ground known as Benarca Bend. This area boasts many camping sites and a boat ramp, and would have to be one of the best areas to camp and fish. The river is wide and has a great water depth holding many a big fish. If you’re looking to get away from the hustle and bustle of town, you could head to Wanganella on the Billabong Creek about 45km from Deniliquin. The creek may be shallow but holds plenty of fish ranging from Murray Cod, yellowbelly, carp and the elusive Catfish. Be sure to

stay at the Wanganella Creek Camp Park which has all the creature comforts of home. Coming up in summer is the 23rd Annual Deniliquin RSL Iron Jack Fishing Classic, from Friday, February 14 to Sunday, February 16. This familyfriendly event caters to junior anglers with special events over the weekend.
