Dining, entertainment and more

The Deniliquin RSL is always a great option for an outing, whether it’s for a social drink with friends, dinner, watching that big sporting event, or just a little rest and relaxation on your own.

Indulge in a memorable dining experience at the club, where expert chefs, welcoming staff, and exclusive amenities combine to create an unparalleled atmosphere. The Brasserie offers a great range of menu options, or you can enjoy a lighter meal or sweet treat at the café. An all-new menu will be available from April, showcasing autumn produce.

Escape for a cool drink at the bar and enjoy the indoor lounges or alfresco beer gardens at your leisure. At the front of the club is the gaming lounge, which also provides plenty of space to sit and catch up. There’s even a dance floor, so you can make the most of the live music. Popular acts that regularly appear at the club include Jade Camden, Shane and Ellie, Elise Drake, Michael Hogan, and Ray McCartney.

The rear sports lounge houses TAB facilities and a spacious family area extending out to the club’s largest beer garden. This is where you will find the

Little Diggers indoor playground, which turns into a supervised crèche on particular evenings.

The RSL is also a great choice for private functions and can accommodate birthdays, wedding ceremonies, expos, and other events in any of its function rooms. These include the impressive Mountbatten Room, which features its own bar and can comfortably accommodate up to 100 guests. The Gallery Room is the smallest and most intimate space, geared toward smaller birthday parties and professional development opportunities. The largest function room, the Dunlop Room Auditorium, also has its own bar and can fit upwards of 500 people.

Regular activities at the club for members and guests include Tuesday Night Trivia and Monday Bingo, as well as a series of raffles and other games throughout the week. Members have the added advantage of being in the running for the weekly membership

draws. Members also get discounts on food and drinks, along with other great perks. Local and interstate memberships are available.

Special events this autumn include Anzac Day celebrations. The club hosts the traditional Anzac Eve dinner, a gunfire breakfast on Anzac Day, and post-Anzac Day ceremony entertainment. Easter is also an exciting time at the Deni RSL. The feature band for Easter will be Den-YT, a musical duo playing covers from the 1950s all the way to the present day.

Ensuring your safety and peace of mind, a complimentary shuttle service operates on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday evenings, providing secure transport to and from the club. For more information about the club’s facilities or to book a seat on the courtesy bus, visit the club at End St, Deniliquin, or call (03) 5881 1455.

Rodeo and a stockman show

Held on Saturday, 19 April, it is an Australian Pro Rodeo registered event that will draw the best professional riders and competitors nationwide.

They will compete in open and second division bull riding, bareback bronc, and saddle bronc competitions. Other competition sections include the bareback saddle bronc, rope and tie, steer wrestling, team roping, breakaway roping, and barrel racing.

Another popular event at Deniliquin is the Pub Steer Ride Challenge, where amateur riders represent local sponsor venues.

The professional and amateur riders will be paired with stock from legendary rodeo stock contractor Gary McPhee, making for a real spectacle.

New this year will be an event for the future stars of the rodeo. A ‘mini bulls’ section for children aged 10–14 will be added to the line-up in 2025. Event organisers say it’s become an exciting part of many rodeos around the country and ensures the youngest members of the rodeo circuit families have their chance to shine.

Also in the spotlight at Deniliquin will be one of Australia’s most famous stockmen – Lachie Cossor. Known as the Outback Stockman, he has been a prominent figure at the Australian Stockman’s Hall of Fame in Longreach, Queensland, where he presents

the ‘Outback Stockman Show’ from April to October. In the other months, he takes his show on the road.

Cossor’s show is a tribute to the skills of past and present stockmen, offering a true depiction of the unique Australian character. The performance combines humour, education, and exceptional horsemanship, providing audiences with a glimpse into outback life, both past and present.

Cossor, who was once a rodeo competitor himself, said audience participation is often encouraged, enhancing the interactive experience.

“There’s a bit of slapstick and crowd participation; rodeos always have a good atmosphere,” he said. “I am a former bronc rider myself, and I won Victorian titles and even competed overseas before I was injured.”

Food stalls, trade sites, around-the-grounds entertainment, and a licensed bar (no BYO allowed) add to the evening. There will also be live music, from Deniliquin-based singer-songwriter Zara Lindeman.

The family-friendly entertainment gets under way in the afternoon with heats and live music, with the twilight action then kicking off from about 5 pm.

The Deniliquin Rodeo Under the Stars is hosted at the Deniliquin Rodeo Arena, off Racecourse Rd, Deniliquin. For more information and a link for ticket

sales via ticketbo.com.au (see the QR code in their advertisement to the left), head to the Deniliquin Rodeo Facebook page.

Easter exhibition extended

The 32nd instalment of the Rotary Easter Art Show will be hosted this April, boasting a $20,000 prize pool.

Delivered by the Rotary Club of Deniliquin in partnership with the Edward River Art Society, it brings work from local and district artists to the fore.

The exhibition will open for the Easter weekend from Friday, April 18 but will run for more than four days this year. Now with access to the Deniliquin Multi Arts Centre as a permanent exhibition space, ERAS president Lou Graham said the Easter entries can be viewed until Saturday, May 17.

Mrs Graham said she was happy with how preparations were going and was excited about the prospects of the event and what it would bring to the area.

“There are plenty of opportunities for artists locally to win prizes, and the entries are coming in thick and fast,” she said.

The prize pool of $20,000 will be split among a number of categories, as follows:

• Best in Show – $5000

• Artistic Merit Prize – two prizes worth $2000 each

• Local Artist Prize (within 50km of Deniliquin) – $1200

• Local Scene – $1000

• Youth Artist Prize – $600

• People’s Choice Award – $500

• Picture Hangers’ Award (voted by volunteer picture-hanging team) – $500

The winner in each of the nine section prizes will receive $800 each.

The sections are: mixed media, oil, acrylic, works on paper (wet mediums), works on paper (dry mediums), photography, digital artwork, sculpture, and ceramics and textiles.

As well as being a vehicle to enjoy work from local artists, the art show entries will also be available for sale.

“This show gives the community a good look at the works of local artists right on their doorstep, and at reasonably priced works,” she said.

“We have high-calibre artists here in Deni and the surrounding areas, and the show gives them a chance to display and sell their art.

“For everyone interested in art, it gives them a space to enjoy and get excited about.”

DENILIQUIN BOWLING CLUB

Cast, camp, and connect with nature

Our region is a prime destination for fishing and camping enthusiasts, especially during the crisp and colourful autumn months.

As the temperatures drop and the leaves change, the area’s natural beauty comes alive, providing an ideal backdrop for outdoor activities.

Fishing is particularly popular along the Edward River at Deniliquin, the Mighty Murray, or in one of the many other creeks and anabranches that feed this region. Anglers can cast their lines for species such as Murray cod, yellowbelly, and silver perch, all of which thrive in the area’s freshwater environments.

Autumn is an excellent time for fishing, as the cooler water temperatures encourage fish to become more active, increasing the chances of a successful catch. Whether you prefer bank fishing or using a boat, the calm, scenic waters offer a relaxing yet rewarding experience.

Camping in the district is equally enjoyable, with a variety of campsites scattered throughout the area. The region’s serene atmosphere makes it perfect for those looking to disconnect and immerse themselves in nature.

Many campsites are located near the river, offering convenient access to fishing spots and the opportunity to enjoy a peaceful evening by the campfire. With

the vibrant autumn foliage surrounding the area, it’s a picturesque setting for both experienced campers and beginners. Some great campsite options in our region include:

• Willoughby’s Beach Campground (Murray Valley Regional Park), Deniliquin:

This riverside campground is nestled within the national park that hugs the Deniliquin township. It offers a natural setting by the Edward River, where visitors can enjoy fishing, swimming, and birdwatching in a serene, bushland environment. The Deniliquin Golf Course and the Memorial Park showgrounds are both just a short walk away.

• Gulpa Campground (Murray Valley Regional Park), Mathoura:

Located 12km from Mathoura, this campground is one of many in the Murray Valley Regional Park. It is home to amazing birdlife, and visitors can go canoeing and kayaking along the Gulpa Creek or the Edward River.

• Moulamein Forest Reserve:

Located approximately 50km northeast of Deniliquin, Moulamein Forest Reserve offers a quiet, natural camping experience near the Edward River. The reserve is known for its tranquil atmosphere, scenic river views, and abundant birdlife, making it ideal for outdoor enthusiasts who enjoy fishing and nature walks.

• Koondrook-Perricoota Forest:

About 90km north of Deniliquin, the forest provides a fantastic natural setting for camping among towering river red gums. It’s a perfect spot for bushwalking, birdwatching, and fishing, with the added bonus of being surrounded by the peaceful sounds of nature.

• Barmah Lakes Campground (Barmah National Park):

About 60km north of Deniliquin, Barmah Lakes Campground is located in the heart of the Barmah Forest—one of the largest river red gum forests in the world. The site is perfect for fishing, boating, and exploring nature trails through the forest, offering a true bush camping experience.

GOLFER’S PARADISE

Picturesque golf course

When professional golfers on the PGA Legends Tour played the Deniliquin Pro-Am tournament in October last year, they were effusive in their praise of the course and its layout.

Deniliquin is blessed to have a quality course located on the edge of the Murray Valley Regional Park, yet just a stone’s throw from the centre of town.

You can enjoy the beauty of this golf course, alongside the kangaroos, kookaburras, superb parrots, echidnas, goannas, lizards, pelicans, and a host of other wildlife that abound in this paradise of nature.

At its best, Deniliquin Golf Course, with its 18 manicured fairways and true greens, is a shining example of Australia’s magnificent golf courses.

If you’re looking for a trip away, the Deni Golf Resort has you covered with a range of packages, built to take the stress out of finding accommodation. Its 22 units overlook the ninth fairway and are nestled among bushland. It’s just 30m from the resort to the first tee, and an even shorter distance to the bushwalk track.

The course perfectly reflects a chance for all golfing standards to enjoy a fun and challenging round.

By modern standards, the course is not long — 5817 metres par 72 for men, and 5118 metres par 72 for ladies. However, off the back tees, it is a challenge for all levels of player, as many professionals who have tried to tame the course have discovered.

Poor shots find the huge trees, or perhaps a creek or other water hazard. There are contrasting holes, with the ‘back six’ having been reconstructed to form part of the town’s levee bank system. The greens are fast but true and always in great condition.

A feature of Deniliquin Golf Course is the ‘same-day play’ principle that applies. On most days, you can phone the pro shop on (03) 5881 3333 to book your tee-off time, or just call in and one of the friendly volunteer staff will cater for your golfing needs. If you prefer the relaxation of a golf cart, there are plenty of those available too.

After your round on the course, enjoy the club’s facilities or relax under the veranda. Friday nights are a speciality in the clubhouse, with meat raffles, great meals, and a fun atmosphere where locals will make you feel welcome. For the latest information on clubhouse opening hours and activities, phone (03)  5881 1325.

If you want to practise your game, the club has an undercover driving range, which features an automated ball dispenser and lighting, allowing extended play on your terms. It’s simply a matter of getting a token or swiping your credit card to get a bucket of balls and work on your swing.

Visitors are also encouraged to enter any of the club’s regular competitions, which are listed on its website. These include medley events every Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday.

In addition to its year-round golfing opportunities, Deniliquin Golf Club has an exciting lineup of upcoming events for 2025. Kicking off with the Autumn Classic on March 8 & 9, golfers can enjoy a competitive yet scenic challenge. Later in the month, the Diggers Day 4 Person Ambrose on April 27 promises a fun and social day for teams. The Corporate Fundraiser event will also be held later in the year (date to be confirmed), offering an excellent opportunity for businesses to come together for a good cause. In May, golf enthusiasts can look forward to both the Deni Men’s Open and the Deni Women’s Open on May 16. Wrapping up the autumn and spring season, the Winter Classic on June 7 & 8 will provide yet another fantastic golfing experience in the cooler months. These events are a great way to get involved in the local golf community and enjoy all the natural beauty Deniliquin Golf Club has to offer.

Keep an eye out for special charity days and competitions too, which are also listed on the club website www.denigolfclub.com.au.

It is home to the Border Flywheelers Club & Heritage Museum, which was established in 1995 and showcases a collection of tractors, machinery, engines, and artifacts used by the farming community along the Murray-Darling Basin.

The museum is located in the old JR Jamieson and Co Brickworks building in Barham, at 9 Jamieson Avenue.

No matter when you visit, you’ll gain greater insight into all the machinery at the club’s 27th annual Barham Vintage Engine & Machinery Rally on May 17 and 18, 2025.

At the rally, you can expect to see a fully operational steam bay display, as well as a belt-driven hay baler display. There will also be radio-controlled trucks, woodworkers, a show-and-shine, and trade stalls.

The weekend’s ‘start-ups’ will feature the Eagle Creek Pump R&T engine and two of the museum’s rarest items: the Marshall and Rushton motors. Both were salvaged from local irrigation farms, and very few still exist in Australia. The Rushton is the newest addition to the collection, and club members are working hard to have it running in time for the ‘start-ups’ section. The Marshall has been a popular attraction in this section for several years after a long history of work at Kangaroo Lake.

Another crowd-pleaser will be the free army Jeep rides around the lake area.

There will be full catering available all weekend, and entry to the rally is just $10 for adults. Children under 16 get in free.

If your visit does not coincide with the rally, you can still learn about the local area through its machinery by visiting the museum on the first Saturday of each month. Group tours can also be arranged at other times by appointment.

On these open days, the club also offers tours that include an inspection of two heritage brick kilns, which are more than 100 years old. You’ll see various types of bricks and heritage brick-making artifacts from bygone years.

There is a section dedicated to collections of household goods, including excellent kitchen, laundry, hospital, and dining room displays.

The ‘keeping place’ houses stone artifacts from the local First Nations people of the Barapa Barapa. These items are stored in the museum for safekeeping and serve as a resting place. It’s a great opportunity to learn about the history and culture of these items and the people who used them.

The museum offers catering for morning or afternoon tea, or larger meals, for group bookings by request.

Admission is $10 per person, and children under 16 get in free.

Follow the Ned Kelly Trail to Jerilderie

The

Ned Kelly legend

still looms large across Australia and in some other far reaches of the world.

And the bushranger’s connection to Jerilderie makes this Southern Riverina town a must-stop for history fans. Jerilderie was, of course, where Ned Kelly’s famous ‘Jerilderie Letter’ was penned, and 10 historical sites connected to the gang’s 1879 visit can still be explored.

The Jerilderie Historic Residence is a beautiful Victorian-era building with a magnificent garden that exudes natural beauty. It was once the Bank of NSW, and its hosts, Beth and Roy, have created a space where visitors can essentially step back into the 1880s Victorian era. Inside the building is a safe that is believed to have been robbed by Ned Kelly in 1879. The garden features gazebos, fountains, and beds of beautiful flowers. Tours of the home and garden are by appointment and can be booked by calling 0499  849 320.

Another point of interest for Ned Kelly enthusiasts is the Old Printery and the Bolt Exhibition. The Bolt Exhibition inside the printery is a walk-through history of convicts and bushrangers, with special mention of Ned Kelly and the Kelly Gang, and their

three-day stand in the town. The building originally housed the Jerilderie and Urana Gazette and can be found at 39-41 Jerilderie St, Jerilderie. Once in Jerilderie, you’ll discover there’s so much more to see and do. Have a bite to eat, explore the local shops, and make sure to take some time out in one of the parks.

Lake Jerilderie is a popular spot to cool off and enjoy water sports. Right next door is Luke Park, which comes with free barbecue facilities and a playground.

Be sure to check out Steel Wings, an enormous windmill that doubles as an art installation. Made in 1901-1910, the windmill was originally at Goolgumbla Station; it stands 50 feet tall and is a marvel to look at.

Other recreational attractions include golf, tennis, and lawn bowls. Memorial Park is where you’ll find the cenotaph paying tribute to locals who served in war. A retired Leopard Tank that was originally in service with the Australian Army also takes pride of place here.
