Welcome
THE FIRST ITEM I REQUIRE FOR WINTER IN ECHUCA MOAMA IS A NEW BEANIE, SO I WILL BE POPPING ALONG TO THE MOAMA MARKET TO SEE WHAT I CAN FIND.
Fun things to do in winter start on the King’s Birthday weekend with a steaming at the Echuca Moama Steam Trade Iron Revival. Enjoy the hands-on experience of everything yesteryear, a meal at the camp kitchen and a ride on a miniature train.
Echuca Moama Winter Blues Festival is celebrating 25 years at the end of July, and the towns come alive with boot-stomping, boogiewoogie, rooting-tooting free blues music.
Murray River Council’s region is vast, but there is now a reason to explore it this winter: the River Country Art Trail.
I’m hooking up the caravan for the 275km trip from the Moama Water Tower to Mathoura, Barham, Moulamein and Tooleybuc.
I will update my selfie art collection, visit our small communities and meet some friendly locals.
Once I’m back in Moama, it’s someone else’s turn to cook.
First stop will be the Moama RSL for its Perfect Plate dish: Gnocchi with prawns, tomato, zucchini, lemon and capers on a bed of Jerusalem artichoke topped with parsnip crisps and fresh dill.
Junction is offering Pasta E Vino over winter. I can choose from one of two pasta dishes and a glass of wine for lunch on Saturdays and Sundays. Yum.
Then, across the river, to the Echuca Workers for morning tea in the café, as I have heard the jelly slice is the best.
After all those carbs, my feet will pound the pavement with two crossings of the Murray River when I put on my runners to take part in Run Echuca.
There is much to do and enjoy this winter in Echuca Moama, so get out and about, you’ll love it.

DIRE STRAITS TRIBUTE BAND, MONEY FOR NOTHIN’ FRONTMAN, TERRY MCMAHON HAS SPENT DECADES PERFECTING HIS CRAFT AS MARK KNOPFLER’S MUSICAL COUNTERPART.
“I started the show in 2018 after many years of playing in various tribute shows as a side man guitarist for other people, including a bunch of tribute shows like ABBA, Rolling Stones, Elton John, Status Quo,” Terry said.
His journey with Dire Straits began in 1978 when he was 12 years old.
“My Dad had a Tandy electronics store and used to sell record players, and one day, when I came in, he said, have a listen to this, and he put on Dire Straits’ first album,” he said.
“And from that moment on, I was totally hooked.”
To authentically recreate Knopfler's distinctive sound, Terry dedicated six months to relearning guitar techniques.
“I spent probably six months in my studio learning to play, or relearning to play with my fingers because Knopfler is a finger player, he doesn’t use a pick at all,” he said.
The band’s repertoire includes classics like Sultans
of Swing, Walk of Life, and Money for Nothin They also perform deeper cuts for devoted fans.
“We do Six Blade Knife, which is a song off the first album that not everyone knows if you are a casual Dire Straits fan,” Terry said.
Money for Nothin’ has partnered with the Australian Eagles tribute band for an upcoming series of theatre shows.
“What we are trying to really do is sell memories,” Terry said.
“When they watch us play, it is like when the audience members hearsay, ‘I remember that song, I remember the day it came out’ and it brings a smile to their faces.”
Hall of Fame Icons Concert: An Unmissable Tribute Featuring Australian Eagles Show and Money For Nothing: Dire Straits Experience will be at the Paramount Echuca on Saturday, June 21.

BBQ AT MOAMA BEACH
Grab a tray of snags, a sandwich loaf and a bottle of dead horse and head down to Moama Beach for a BBQ.

Moama Beach is the ideal place to spend the day outside, exploring the riverfront and surrounding bush on the Moama Beach Nature Walk.

The Five Mile mountain bike trail provides 7km of purpose-built mountain bike trails.
Located in Murray Valley Regional Park, next to Murray Valley National Park, it’s one of the best places for mountain biking in the Riverina region.
The trails suit mountain bikers of all skill levels and offer a fun-packed day for the whole family with a unique mix of fast and rolling terrain with wall rides, drops and flowing bridges.
There is also a skills area, a pump track and a wellstocked inventory of berms, jumps and rollers.
Bring your camera for a stunning photo of an eastern great egret or a musk duck thrashing in the water to attract a mate.
Walking along the boardwalk, look for yellow rosellas and superb wrens or watch at the edge of the water for the purple swamphen.
Turn over the bird panels as you stroll along the boardwalk; check out which birds are vegetarians and which prefer frogs; find out who honks like a goose, but soars like an eagle.
ECHUCA MOAMA SHAVE IS AN EVENT ORGANISED BY A GROUP OF YOUNG VOLUNTEERS TO HELP SUPPORT ANYONE IN THE COMMUNITY TOUCHED BY CANCER.
The Echuca Moama Shave event is set to return bigger than ever, with organisers seeking volunteers and participants for the annual fundraiser that supports local families affected by cancer.
Committee member Hazel Voss said the event, scheduled for Sunday, June 22 at the Echuca Hotel, would feature expanded activities and space.
“We are looking to be able to accommodate a lot more people, because we are going to open up the car park at the Echuca Hotel,” she said.
“We have some pretty cool volunteers shaving, chopping and dying their hair crazy colours.
“To make our event even bigger and better than the last couple of years, we are trying to make it a bit more family inclusive, so we will have face painting, crazy hair stores and stuff for little kids.”
The event has raised over $70,000 in previous years, with the funds directly supporting families affected by cancer.
“We help them out with things they can’t get other support for,” Hazel said.
“Things like transport, accommodation, food, and even money towards treatment, it depends on the person’s situation.”
Recipients are identified through suggestion boxes at the event and direct messages to organisers.
“Then we have a conversation with people to see how much they roughly need,” Hazel said.
Currently, about 10 people have registered to donate their hair, and the committee is happy for more volunteers who would either like to help out fundraising, on the day or to get their hair shaved, cut or coloured.
Those interested in volunteering or participating can contact organisers at instagram.com/ echucamoama.shave.
Echuca Moama Shave is on Sunday, June 22 at the Echuca Hotel, 569 High St, Echuca from 11am.

Art trail uncovers river country
DISCOVER THE RIVER COUNTRY ART TRAIL — A CAPTIVATING COLLECTION OF ICONIC ARTWORKS THAT CELEBRATE AND ENHANCE THE UNIQUE IDENTITY OF OUR REGION.
River Country Art Trail is a living gallery, winding through Moama, Mathoura, Barham, Moulamein and Tooleybuc.
Each town tells its own story — in vivid colour, powerful shapes, and bold imagination.
Moama
The striking water tower mural sets the tone for the trail.
Painted by the renowned artist Twoone (Hiroyasu Tsuri), the mural, titled Blue Crane and Friends, celebrates the town’s deep connection to nature and cultural heritage.
Inspired by Yorta Yorta stories, the mural features the white-faced heron, locally known as the blue crane, a bird of great significance to the Yorta Yorta people.
Mathoura
Spanish artist Dulk’s Guardians of the Murray highlights the region’s rich ecosystem and the delicate balance of its environment.
His mural showcases fantastical elements — unicorn horns, diamonds, and a vivid palette — symbolising the adaptation of animals facing human impact.
Barham
Mural by Australian artist Gus Eagleton, renowned for his vivid realism and storytelling through portraiture, captures the essence of Barham through three striking silhouettes. These represent the town’s red gum heritage, pioneering families, ANZAC legacy (featuring George Rathbone), and enduring connection to the Murray River.
Moulamein
Visitors are invited to experience its newly painted water tower, brought to life by renowned muralist Heesco.
The mural is divided into three sections: the first celebrates the natural world and environment; the second pays tribute to the region’s agricultural richness; and the final section, in black-and-white and sepia tones, reflects the town’s history and heritage — from the ‘Big Tree’ and court house to the Mooloomoon Shearing Shed.
Tooleybuc
The River Country Art Trail reaches its sculptural crescendo with Gathering the Bounty — a striking 11-metre artwork by nationally acclaimed artist Stuart Green.
Installed beside the Murray River in Mensforth Park, this towering figure represents the Riverina as Australia’s food bowl.
The River Country Art Trail is proudly supported by the NSW Government.
Bop along at Orbison show
A SPECTACULAR TRIBUTE SHOW CELEBRATING THE MUSIC OF ROY ORBISON AND THE EVERLY BROTHERS IS COMING TO MOAMA RSL ON FRIDAY, JUNE 27.
The event includes a two-course dinner and features a dance floor, allowing the audience to get up and have a little bop.
Entertainer Issi Dye and his partner Glenn Douglas will present a fully costumed performance honouring these legendary artists.
“The connection is that Roy Orbison worked with the Everly Brothers many, many times in the ’50s and ’60s; they recorded each other’s songs,” Issi said.
“Back in the days of the ’50s, when all the music changed, they were two of the artists that came out of the same stable with Elvis and Johnny Cash.”
The show promises authentic recreations of both acts, with Glenn Douglas performing as Roy Orbison in full costume, including wigs and the iconic glasses.
“It is not just a guy that gets up in a pair of jeans and a T-shirt,” Issi said.
“He looks and sounds like the original artist, which
is what we are trying to achieve.”
The performance will feature beloved hits including the Everly Brothers’ Dream, Dream, Dream and Bye Bye Love, along with Orbison classics such as Only the Lonely, Crying, and Pretty Woman
“We try to get everyone up and dance,” Issi said.
“It becomes an interactive performance for us. If people are sitting in a theatre, they can’t get up and dance, but at a club, we can encourage them to get up and have a little bop around.”
Doors open at 5pm, with dinner served at 6.30pm and the show starting at 7pm.
The dinner is a two-course, alternate drop menu serving lamb shanks and chicken for mains, and banana fritters and chocolate panna cotta for dessert, with gluten-free options available.

Aussie Crawl show lights it up
RECKLESS, AUSTRALIAN CRAWL
TRIBUTE BAND FRONTMAN MARCO SINNI, IS BRINGING HIS AUTHENTIC PERFORMANCE OF THE ICONIC AUSTRALIAN BAND TO THE RICH RIVER GOLF CLUB THIS WINTER.
“I have been playing for about 40 years,” Marco said, who has spent the last five years focusing on his Australian Crawl tribute project.
“From being such a fan from when I was 16 or 17 and why it took me so long? I have no idea,” he said.
The tribute band has received an endorsement from original Australian Crawl drummer Bill McDonough, with whom Marco has developed a strong friendship.
“Here we are all these years later, deciding to start the band and find myself at this age, being actually endorsed by an original member of the band itself,” Marco said.
In preparing for his role as James Reyne, Marco took a scholarly approach to the band’s catalogue.
“What’s special about Australian Crawl to me, is the quirkiness and the lyrics that have always been misconceived because of James’s singing,” he said.
Marco’s favourite Australian Crawl track to perform is Unpublished Critics’, a B-side of one of their most successful albums, Sirocco.
The upcoming show at Rich River Golf Club will feature a 70-minute set of Australian Crawl hits, followed by a 45-minute selection of classic Australian rock songs from bands including Hunters and Collectors and Noiseworks.
The format was recently tested at the Barn in Victoria with great success.
“Just expect a nostalgic trip back to the ’80s, where
you could have seen some of these bands in the local hotel,” Marco said.
“That’s the feedback we get from people is basically, you made me feel 18 to 20 again.”
Reckless, an Australian Crawl tribute band, will perform a free show at the Rich River Golf Club on Saturday, July 12.
OTHER FREE SHOWS AT THE RICH RIVER GOLF CLUB OVER WINTER INCLUDE:
• Tusk - The Fleetwood Mac Tribute ShowSaturday, June 7.
• U2 show - Saturday, August 30.

Blues, dancing and laughter
FOR 25 YEARS, THE ECHUCA
MOAMA WINTER BLUES FESTIVAL HAS BEEN AMPLIFYING BLUES MUSIC ACROSS THE TWIN TOWNS.
What started as a small gathering of blues enthusiasts has grown into one of the country’s most popular free-entry music festivals.
It has flourished, featuring top Australian blues artists and turning the historic Port Precinct into a buzzing hub of live music, great food, and community spirit.
One of the artists returning to Winter Blues for 2025 is Kathleen Halloran, a Melbourne-based guitarist and singer-songwriter.
Kathleen describes her music as “sort of pop, it is very guitar-driven, kind of bluesy, and pretty rocky.”
“I try to write music that is an excellent vehicle for a live jam,” she said.
“I’ve got a fantastic band and we love to lift the roof off live where we can.”
In 2024, on her first visit, Kathleen found Winter Blues amazing, soaking up everything the blues festival had to offer.
“The whole town is just lit up with music from the moment you wake up, to the moment you go to sleep, there is live music happening and while it is a blues festival, there is still so much variation and character,” she said.
If Aussie bluesy rock with a little bit of hillbilly with Dad jokes thrown in is more your thing, Marshall and the Fro will be back for another year of boogying.
Marshall and the Fro frontman Marshall Okell does treat the music seriously, but not himself and the band too much on stage.
“We just get up there and try to have a ball and try to get as many people in the audience to join in with us and get down and boogie,” he said.
The three-piece outfit will be joined again in 2025 by blues washboard and harmonica legend Manzi.
“He plays really mean washboards and harmonica and he is one of the funniest human beings that I’ve met on the planet,” Marshall said.
“He is a one of a kind fella.”
For a full line-up of all the free gigs at the 2025 Winter Blues Festival, including who is playing where and when, go to winterblues.com.au
Echuca Moama Winter Blues Festival runs from Thursday, July 24 to Sunday, July 27.

Craft winter warmth
THE DAYS ARE GETTING SHORTER AND THE NIGHTS A LITTLE CHILLY, SO IT’S TIME TO THINK ABOUT PULLING OUT THE WINTER WOOLLIES.
Instead of unearthing your beanies and scarves from last year, think about creating your own.
Campaspe Libraries staff are again inviting community members to enter their handiwork into the annual ‘Wrapped for Winter’ community exhibition.
The exhibition, to be held from June to July across all libraries, will feature handmade shawls and scarves — wearable items to wrap around for winter warmth — using yarn or textiles that can be crocheted, knitted, sewn or embellished, or by using any other crafty technique.
Campaspe Shire Mayor Daniel Mackrell said it was a fantastic opportunity for talented Campaspe residents to showcase their craft.
“There have been some truly amazing and intricate pieces submitted over the past two years since this exhibition began, so we are really excited to see what local craftspeople produce this year.’’
This year the exhibition includes ‘novelty knits’ and ‘creative crochet’ items, adding a bit of fun into the display.
Entry is free and open now, until Monday, May 26. Submissions can be delivered to your closest Campaspe library branch or depot.
The exhibition will be open to the public at the various library locations during June and July.
Exhibition visitors will be invited to vote for People’s Choice awards and the lucky creator of the most popular item will receive a gift voucher to spend on more yarn and accessories.
Once the exhibition is closed, entrants will have the option to donate their submission to the EchucaMoama Community Project’s Coat and Blanket Drive.
“It is heartwarming to see the impact that passion and community spirit can have and is a wonderful chance to assist those in need while engaging in activities you enjoy,’’ Cr Mackrell said.
For information, terms of entry and exhibition details, contact Campaspe Libraries on 5481 2400 or visit www.campaspe.vic.gov.au/library
Discover innovative dining
CAMERON KYDD’S CULINARY JOURNEY HAS TAKEN HIM FROM HIS HOMETOWN OF KYABRAM TO MELBOURNE AND BENDIGO, BEFORE BECOMING THE HEAD CHEF AT JUNCTION.
“I came back and was sous chef for a few years at Junction, and for the last eight months I have been the head chef here,” Cameron said.
“It is a really good place to work, we have a good team, and I get lots of freedom with the menu and food that we cook.”
At Junction, Cameron and his team regularly update their menu, offering innovative dishes alongside quality steaks.
“We try to be different,” he said.
“I like to try and be that point of difference and give guests something new to try.”
The restaurant offers à la carte dining, Thursday to Sunday and a seven-course set menu on Friday and Saturday nights.
“We have something in every sort of price range, but always the best quality,” Cameron said of their steak selection.
“We love working with beef, especially because Australian beef is so good.”
The restaurant’s dry-ageing fridge, acquired last year, allows them to age beef for at least three weeks and duck for up to seven days.

New route, same run
THE BIGGEST RUNNING EVENT ON ECHUCA-MOAMA’S CALENDAR IS RETURNING FOR 2025 WHERE PARTICIPANTS WILL CHALLENGE THEMSELVES FOR A GOOD CAUSE WHILE NAVIGATING A NEW ROUTE.
Participants will be able to choose their own adventure with 21.1km, 10km or 5km distances that can be walked, run or wheeled using a mobility aid.
The route for the run will take participants through bushland, across the Murray River twice, past the port of Echuca and its paddle steamers and finishes with a grand crossing over the old bridge to the finish line at the event hub at Kerrabee Soundshell in Moama.
The old Echuca-Moama bridge will be closed off for the event, allowing participants and spectators to run across it and take in the scenic sights of the Murray River.
There will also be the junior bolt for younger runners, with a 400m dash for ages five to seven and a 800m run for ages eight to 10.
The event is to support Community Living and Respite Services’ Open Doors Project, which builds homes for people with a disability. Through these projects, CLRS builds homes for people with disability in the local community. These projects have built three homes and 12 units, supporting 22 people with disability to live with greater independence and inclusion within their community.
CLRS CEO and Run Echuca-Moama organiser Leah Taaffe highlighted the organisation’s excitement for the event.
“We want to make sure they’re supported so they want to come back and engage in the event again,” she said.
“Everyone is really excited about the event this time around; we were all pretty nervous last year because it was our first year rebranding it.
“This year we are feeling more confident about what we are doing and excited about being able to get the councils on board about closing the bridge because it is a bit unusual and will be iconic, it’s absolutely fabulous.”
The event is on Sunday, August 3 with registrations opening on Wednesday, May 7.
Classic trucks roll in
THE AMERICAN IRON ECHUCA TRUCK DISPLAY WILL RETURN TO ROTARY PARK ECHUCA FOR THE 17TH YEAR ON SEPTEMBER 13 AND 14.
American Truck Historical Society Australian Chapter president Tony Murphy said the Echuca truck display was the group’s main show for the year.
“The club’s main aim is to preserve the past for the future, that’s our motto,” Tony said.
“All these old transport vehicles and trucks are a part of Australian history.
“Because if we didn’t have the trucks, there would be nothing in the shops.
“Most of the members have club-registered trucks over 25 years old.
“We have trucks that date back as far as the early 1900s, and this Echuca display gives everybody a chance, when the sun starts coming out again, to come out and display their rigs.”
Despite its name, the American Iron event showcases a diverse array of trucks, including American and international brands.
“Then there are also English trucks like Bedfords and Commer and different trucks like that,” Tony said.
“There are various trucks, from light utilities to heavy trucks and road train-rated trucks.
“Several classic cars will be displayed, with the local car club bringing cars along.”
Before the display opens to the public, the American Truck Historical Society Australian Chapter will gather for drinks and food for members and their families on Friday night.
Anyone who drives up to the gate in a rig to be displayed, entry to the American Iron Echuca Truck Display is free for you and your passengers.
Family-friendly ticket options are available at the gate, with single-day or weekend passes for adults and free entry for children under 16.

Basketball action bounces in
ONE OF ECHUCA BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION’S BIGGEST EVENTS OF THE YEAR, THE JUNIOR COUNTRY JAMBOREE, IS BACK AND BIGGER THAN EVER IN 2025.
The event is a four-day camp for 240 under-12 players to be held at Echuca Basketball Stadium from Saturday, September 20 to Tuesday, September 23.
To be selected for the Jamboree, players must have attended the under-12 Country Skills Day and then 120 boys and 120 girls are selected to participate in the jamboree.
Some of the best coaches from across country Victoria will be on hand to teach player and team skills for the players to excel at the under-14 level and beyond.
Echuca Moama Basketball Association president Lisa Baker reflected on the club’s excitement about the Jamboree and the potential for career development for players.
“The juniors come and learn from the best of the coaches in country Victoria and play games and meet new people, which can open the door for further development,” she said.
“Once they get out of under-12s, they then get taken into the future development program which can lead to being selected for Victoria country teams.
“We’ll have kids go to the skills day and then hopefully get a few through to the Jamboree so they can showcase their talent.
“It’s four full days of basketball, the town is buzzing, it definitely brings a lot to Echuca-Moama as well as high-quality play on the court.”

BELDARI POTTERY STUDIO IN ECHUCA OFFERS VARIOUS ENGAGING POTTERY CLASSES, INVITING LOCALS AND VISITORS TO UNLEASH THEIR CREATIVITY AND CONNECT THROUGH THE TIMELESS CRAFT OF CERAMICS.
Nestled in the charming historic port area, the studio provides a welcoming and supportive environment for pottery enthusiasts, from complete beginners to experienced artisans.
Beldari Pottery Studio owner Chris Stephens shared his 40-year passion for the craft.
“I like to make somewhat organic items that are fairly weighty and use a lot of earthy colours,” he said.
The teaching studio offers diverse hands-on classes, including wheel taster, kids hand building, one-on-one courses, beginner pottery - wheel throwing or hand building.
One of their popular offerings is the four-week Wheel Throwing Pottery Course, which is perfect for beginners.
The course consists of weekly two-hour sessions,
with all materials provided.
“Beginner classes run as two-hour sessions over four weeks, and each week, you delve a little bit further into the fundamentals,” Chris said.
Participants find that engaging in pottery offers numerous benefits, including stress relief, a boost to creativity, and a sense of accomplishment. Many participants find the tactile nature of working with clay meditative and invigorating, providing a perfect escape from daily pressures.
For those seeking a unique and social experience, Beldari Pottery Studio hosts popular ‘Pot and Pizza’ nights monthly, combining creativity, delicious food, and a fun atmosphere.

THE RICH GLEN EARLY HARVEST OLIVE OIL CHANGES EACH YEAR WITH THE SEASONS AND THE 2025 VINTAGE IS A UNIQUE AND ROBUST MUST-TRY OLIVE OIL EXPERIENCE FOR ANY ARDENT FOODIE.
Managing director Daimien Vodusek explains the distinctive early harvest process.
“Generally, harvest commences around the first of May, give or take a week or two, but it is always around then, when you start to harvest,” he said.
“With our early harvest, we probably go four or five weeks before that, which gives us a lot more polyphenols in the olive oil because the fruit is under ripe.
“The olive oil comes out with so much chlorophyll because the fruit is so green, almost to the point each season is different. >
“When you are going so early, you are compromising the volume of yield, but you are getting a lot more pungency and polyphenols.”
Polyphenols are a group of compounds found in extra virgin olive oil which act as antioxidants, increasing the shelf life and contributing to the characteristics, especially bitterness and pungency. While the early harvest yields less oil, it delivers olive oil of superior quality, which at Rich Glen, is allowed to settle naturally for a couple of weeks before bottling.
“It will still have suspended solids and suspended particles because it is unfiltered, and that is why you capture all the good antioxidants and polyphenols,” Daimien said. If you like to partake in the benefits of an early harvest olive oil, Daimien recommends a good teaspoon each morning.
For those who take their olive oil with food, his suggestions include drizzled over fresh tomatoes, straight onto cooked fresh pasta, sprinkled over steak, or it is great with potatoes as it brings out the flavour.
“The best way to taste it is a little bowl of olive oil, bread and a little bit of salt,” Daimien said.
“It is nice if you like to appreciate the oil, but it complements all foods, like fish or plain pasta with egg, then pour over olive oil, you don’t have to fancy it up because the olive oil is the dressing.”
collaborations with other regional farmers, available online and at their three retail shops.
Early harvest olive oil is not the only product Rich Glen grows and produces on their mixed farm at Yarrawonga, following best practice and sustainable farming principles.
Rich Glen has a full range of products, including oils, dressings, rubs, salts, jams, hampers, kitchenware, skin and body care, candles, and

World bowls event at Barham
THE MURRAY RIVER TOWN OF BARHAM IS SET TO HOST A PRESTIGIOUS EVENT, WITH CLUBARHAM ANNOUNCED AS THE 2025 WORLD BOWLS CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS TOURNAMENT VENUE.
The five-day event, scheduled for September 21 to 25, 2025, will feature the top 20 male and female bowlers from around the world competing for the coveted Champion of Champions title.
“It is the top 20 male and female bowlers from around the world that compete in a singles’ play-off competition,” cluBarham CEO Jason Wallace said.
“They will compete and play their balls until there is only one left of each male and female player, and they will be the 2025 Champion of Champions.”
The tournament will be played on the club’s recently upgraded synthetic greens, which underwent a major transformation in 2022.
The facility now features two world-class nine-rink surfaces, with both greens undercover allowing for year-round play.
“They are synthetic greens, world-class and both undercover and very comfortable to play under,” Jason said.
The event is expected to draw significant crowds and international attention.
The Club is expecting hundreds of spectators every day, but the best thing is the media exposure of the Murray region on a state, national and international scale.
“The tournament, particularly the finals, will be broadcast globally online, and people from everywhere in the world will be watching it.
“This will create a great opportunity for the whole region to be promoted.”
The event has received strong backing from local authorities.

‘All
aboard,’ train magic awaits
THE CAMPASPE VALLEY MINIATURE RAILWAY HAS BEEN OPERATING IN ROTARY PARK FOR NEARLY 40 YEARS, AND
YOU’RE INVITED TO HOP ON THE TRAIN.
“It was opened in the early ’70s,” Campaspe Valley Miniature Railway Inc. president Colin McConnell said.
The railway runs passenger services on the first Sunday of each month from March to December, between 10am and 3pm.
“For the last 100 years, people have been making little models of trains, scaled-down models, and they were looking for somewhere to run them,” Colin said.
“It is not like a miniature car that you can run in a supermarket car park or something.
“You’ve got to have a designated track for a railway, obviously.”
The railway operates several types of trains.
“Steam-operated ones, ones that have petrol engines that look like diesel-electric modern trains, and ones that run on batteries,” Colin said.
“Mostly they are the petrol, diesel-electric ones.
“They look like diesel-electric trains, but have a little petrol engine inside them.”
The upcoming Steam Revival event, over the King’s
Birthday weekend in June, promises to showcase multiple locomotives.
“Hopefully, four or five locomotives will be running that weekend,” he said.
“We are hoping to have, at this point, two steam trains running for the steam revival.”
“It used to be up until probably 10 years ago, it used to be all steam trains, and we would get eight or nine of them at a time.
“But it is getting more and more difficult to get the steamers out these days.”
To ride the train, children aged six and under must be accompanied by an adult and everyone is required to wear closed-toe shoes.
Tickets can be purchased at the on-site ticket office. You can find Campaspe Miniature Railway at Rotary Park, Echuca, enter at the corner of Rose and Crossen St, Echuca.
Interested volunteers can phone Colin McConnell on 0448 548 081, visit facebook. com/echucaminiaturerailway, or simply turn up on a running day to introduce themselves.
Murray swim challenge is on
THE ECHUCA WAR MEMORIAL AQUATIC CENTRE INVITES SWIMMERS OF ALL AGES AND ABILITIES TO PARTICIPATE IN THE 2025 WINTER SWIM CHALLENGE, ENCOURAGING LOCALS TO STAY ACTIVE DURING THE COOLER MONTHS.
The challenge, also known as “Swim the Murray”, will run through June and July 2025, allowing participants to virtually swim the distance between Echuca and Torrumbarry along the Murray River — about 100 kilometres within the Campaspe Shire boundaries.
Campaspe Shire Council aquatic facilities coordinator Marcus Maher said the initiative helped maintain swimming motivation during winter.
“You feel that in winter, the motivation to swim goes out the door a little bit, with the cool mornings and cold nights,” he said.
“The Winter Swim Challenge is about encouraging people to come in and swim, having their own goals and determination.
“It could be pushing an extra 10 laps out of your regular swim or upping the number of times a week you swim from even once a week to twice.
“It is about people coming in to go for a goal they might have, or it could be a competition with someone they know.
“The first year, we did have a husband and wife battling it out, or it just could be for a person’s own benefit.
“The swim challenge is for all our swimmers, from the youngest to the most senior swimmers, and those of all levels and experience.”
The 2024 challenge saw impressive participation, with 40 to 50 swimmers involved, and one participant achieving the 100km mark within two months.
Progress is tracked on a map displayed in the pool hall, with swimmers recording their laps on manual sheets at reception.
At the end of the swim challenge, participants who have visited the aquatic centre and completed 20 swims in that time go into the draw for prizes. For more information, visit the Echuca War Memorial Aquatic Centre at the corner of High and Service St, Echuca, or go to www.campaspeaquatics.com.au/Pools
