Welcome

THIS SPRING, YOU WILL FIND ME BAREFOOT WITH THE WORLD’S BEST LAWN BOWLERS AT CLUBARHAM FOR WORLD BOWLS, SEPTEMBER 21 TO 25.

You see, the secretary of the Barham Bowling Club promised that if I made my way up to Barham, they would spoil me and “put on a good spread”.

And I’ll go anywhere for good food and lawn bowls. Talking of good spreads, there is going to be amazing food and drinks to indulge in at the Spirit of the Murray, September 6 and 7, Cohuna Chilli Festival, September 26, Stanhope Food and Wine Festival, October 5, the Tongala Eats and Beats, October 12 and High Tea at the Girgarre Open Gardens, October 26.

The Moama Bowling Club Melbourne Cup Day races on November 4 is offering all-inclusive marquees, umbrella, or custom private packages available, as well as general admission.

This year at the Echuca Racing Club races, I’m getting out my favourite orange silk dress for a shot at the Fashion on the Field competition. Which will also mean I’m already organised for the We Are Vivid Oaks Day fundraising lunch on November 6.

Spring is show season in the Campaspe Murray region with the Kyabram Agricultural Show, October 18, and the Echuca Moama Agricultural Show, November 8 and 9.

To round out the agricultural offerings, the 62nd Elmore Field Days are on, from October 7 to 9, for action-packed days of agricultural innovation and fun hands-on farming experiences.

This spring, you can run, travel or paddle along the mighty Murray River with Sweat vs Steam on November 16 and the 415km Massive Murray Paddle from November 17.

The health of our waterways is essential, and one way we can help keep them healthy is by removing carp from the Campaspe River with the Strathallan Family Landcare Group’s annual carp catch on October 19.

There are so many activities, shows and markets on this spring in the Campaspe Murray regions, so get out and about and enjoy the warm weather and sunshine.

That’s the spirit

A NEW CRAFT SPIRITS FESTIVAL CELEBRATING VICTORIAN AND MURRAY RIVER REGION DISTILLERS WILL DEBUT IN ECHUCA THIS SEPTEMBER, FEATURING MORE THAN 20 DISTILLERIES SHOWCASING OVER 100 DIFFERENT SPIRITS AND BEVERAGES.

The inaugural Spirit On The Murray festival, hosted by Echuca Distillery and supported by Campaspe Shire Council and Murray Regional Tourism, will take place at Radcliffe’s Echuca on September 6 and 7.

Echuca Distillery head distiller Peter De Vries said the event aimed to highlight local craft spirits.

“We are working with the council to create an event that brings people into town, to spend the weekend in Echuca,” he said.

“It is to support Victorian craft distilleries, raise visibility and show people the wonderful products our state can produce and the wide range of products.

“As far as the quality of the product goes, they are all world-class spirits that we are producing and often don’t get the visibility they deserve.”

The Saturday program features an 18-plus ticketed tasting event with two, 2.5-hour sessions.

“You come in and have a free tasting of spirits, all included in the ticket,” Peter said.

“It is like a market set-up where you can go around the stalls, talk to the distillers, taste their product, and purchase bottles if you like.”

A morning masterclass will precede the tasting sessions, featuring four leading Victorian distillers discussing whisky, rum, gin and brandy production.

“These are all big names, heads of their fields, the owners and head distillers of their own distilleries, talking about gin, rum, whisky, talking about where the Australian craft spirits industry is heading,” Peter said.

Sunday’s program, held on Father’s Day, offers free entry to a family-friendly producers’ market, featuring local food and beverage producers alongside spirit makers.

The event will showcase regional products, including cheese, olive oils, home-baked goods, honey and wine.

Tickets for the Saturday masterclass and tasting sessions are available at spiritonthemurray.com.au

Classic trucks on show

THE BELOVED AMERICAN IRON ECHUCA TRUCK DISPLAY IS SET TO CELEBRATE ITS 16TH ANNIVERSARY AT ROTARY PARK ECHUCA ON SEPTEMBER 13 AND 14.

American Truck Historical Society Australian Chapter president Tony Murphy said the Echuca truck display was the group’s main show for the year.

“The club’s main aim is to preserve the past for the future, that’s our motto,” Tony said.

“All these old transport vehicles and trucks are a part of Australian history.

“Without trucks, our supermarkets would be empty and our daily essentials wouldn’t reach us.

“Many of our members proudly showcase clubregistered trucks that are true pieces of automotive history, each over a quarter-century old.

“We have trucks that date back as far as the early 1900s, and this Echuca display gives everybody a chance, when the sun starts coming out again, to come out and display their rigs.”

Despite its name, American Iron offers a diverse spectacle of trucks, showcasing not only American classics, but also beloved international models, ensuring something for every truck enthusiast.

“Then there are also English trucks like Bedfords and Commer and different trucks like that,” Tony said.

“There are various trucks, from light utilities to heavy trucks, and roadtrain-rated trucks.

“Several classic cars will be displayed, with the local car club bringing cars along.”

Before the display opens to the public, the American Truck Historical Society Australian Chapter will gather for drinks and food for members and their families on Friday night.

Anyone who drives up to the gate in a rig to be displayed, entry to the American Iron Echuca Truck Display is free for you and your passengers.

The event offers excellent value for families, with flexible ticketing options available at the gate.

Choose from single-day or weekend passes for adults, and bring the kids along for free — all children under 16 enjoy complimentary entry.

Jump into junior jamboree

ECHUCA WILL ONCE AGAIN HOST BASKETBALL VICTORIA’S COUNTRY UNDER-12 JAMBOREE FOR ATHLETES CHOSEN TO DEVELOP THEIR SKILLS FURTHER.

Two hundred and forty budding basketball stars along with coaching staff, managers and families, will descend upon Echuca Basketball Stadium from Saturday, September 20 to Tuesday, September 23 for a four-day camp intended on nurturing young talent.

The athletes will be selected from the under-12 country skills days on Saturday, July 26 and Sunday, July 27 at 10 regional hubs across Victoria.

The jamboree aims to give young players a taste of what representative basketball will look like, with games and skills sessions planned across the four days.

With the sheer number of visitors coming for the event, it will bring a boost to tourism in Echuca Moama.

While the selected athletes will be from across Country Victoria, Echuca-Moama Basketball Association president hopes to see some talent at the event.

“The try-outs for the jamboree are coming out in the next couple of weeks, we’ll have some players from Echuca that’ll try out for that, and hopefully, we’ll get a few through,” she said.

“The ones that go to the jamboree will be our bottom age under-14s team in the next representative season.

“Hopefully, we’ll have a few players get through the try-outs and represent Echuca at the jamboree at our home stadium, which would be really cool.”

Spice up your life

THE COHUNA CHILLI FESTIVAL IS GEARING UP TO BRING A FIERY FEAST OF FLAVOURS, ENTERTAINMENT AND COMMUNITY SPIRIT TO GARDEN PARK SEPTEMBER 26.

“We were looking for something to invigorate our area,” Cohuna Chilli Festival Committee member Tanya Harvey said.

“We have the Cohuna Show, we have a few different events throughout the year, but we just needed something else that would bring people to the area that was a bit different.”

Starting from 4pm, the festival promises 12 diverse food vendors, live music performances and complimentary children’s activities for ticket holders.

“Something that would bring people out of the doom and gloom of winter,” Tanya said.

“We started talking about having a food van event, which then became a chilli food van event to keep everyone warm.

“There is a bar, we have 12 different food vendors, so quite a variety for a small country town food event.”

The previous year’s event drew an impressive crowd of more than 1000 people, with some travelling from as far as Western Australia.

“Although that said, I think one of the furthest people we did speak to were over from WA and they said they would be back again, because they loved it.

“At that time of year, people are up here anyway, because we are a bit of a tourist hotspot, and this gives them something else to do while they are here.”

Festival highlights include the crowd-favourite chillieating and hot wings competitions, alongside a chilli cooking contest introduced last year, where a local resident claimed victory with their chilli con carne.

The Cohuna Progress Association will operate the bar, maintaining reasonable drink prices.

For tickets and additional details, visit the Cohuna Chilli Festival Facebook page.

Shooting for the stars

ECHUCA-MOAMA BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION WILL PLAY HOST TO THOUSANDS OF BASKETBALL PLAYERS AND ENTHUSIASTS FOR ITS ANNUAL TOURNAMENT IN SEPTEMBER.

Taking place just a week after its Country Under-12 Jamboree, the tournament will be held from Friday, September 26 to Sunday, September 28 across multiple locations in Echuca as well as a few games in Rochester and Kyabram.

EMBA will utilise Echuca Basketball Stadium as well as facilities at Echuca College, Twin Rivers Primary School and St Joseph’s College Echuca for the tournament.

The event typically attracts over 100 teams from Wangaratta, Shepparton, Bendigo, Wodonga and outer Melbourne areas.

The tournament promises to deliver the highest quality competition for under-18 players in

Country Victoria, with numerous grades and age groups in action.

EMBA president Lisa Baker highlighted hers and the EMBA committee’s excitement for the event and the impact it will have on the economy.

“They’ll be staying here, eating here, shopping here and all that kind of stuff, so for Echuca Moama it’s wonderful to get that influx of visitors enjoying the town and boosting the local economy,” Lisa said.

“We have associations that come back yearafter-year, so it is nice to know we run a good tournament and people want to keep returning.

“We are definitely looking forward to it, it’ll be a huge week, but its our busiest and best time of year.”

More than a beer shed

DISCOVER THE HIDDEN TREASURES OF ECHUCA’S UNIQUE MUSEUM. WHAT SECRETS DOES THE GREAT AUSSIE BEER SHED HOLD?

The Great Aussie Beer Shed and Heritage Farm Museum in Echuca has evolved from a unique collection of beer memorabilia to a comprehensive showcase of Australian heritage since its opening in 2003.

Located just 3km from Echuca, the museum houses over 20,000 beer cans from Australia and around the world, alongside an extensive collection of brewery equipment, tap tops, handles, barrels, bottles, and signs.

Owner Neil Thomas, who has spent more than 45 years amassing this collection, conducts engaging guided tours through the 5000 square-foot facility.

The collection continues to grow, and there’s always something new to discover.

The Heritage Farm Museum, completed in 2012, features farming equipment from the late 1800s, including a remarkable collection of Furphy farm water carts.

Visitors can explore a traditional blacksmith workshop, a shearing shed, a milking shed, a

saddlery, and a historic kitchen featuring 100-yearold Echuca-built ovens.

In September 2017, the museum expanded to include the Beer Stein and Horse-Drawn Carriage Museum, showcasing approximately 4000 beer steins and various historic carriages, including an 1890 Dabb and Co. Royal Mail Coach and a 1900 Melbourne Taxi Cab.

The latest addition, Jack’s Shed, displays nine vintage and classic cars, including several classic Holdens acquired from the former National Holden Museum in Echuca.

The licensed premises are available for private functions, including weddings, engagements, birthday parties and Christmas celebrations.

Visitors can relax in the indoor function centre, and group tours with catering options are available. For group bookings, call 54826904

The Great Aussie Beer Shed and Heritage Farm Museum is located at 377 Mary Ann Rd, Echuca.

Native secrets blossom

A CELEBRATION OF AUSTRALIAN NATIVE FLORA WILL TAKE PLACE AT THE ECHUCA MASONIC LODGE WHEN THE AUSTRALIAN PLANTS SOCIETY, ECHUCA, HOSTS ITS ANNUAL NATIVE FLOWER SHOWCASE.

The event, scheduled for Saturday, October 4 from 9am to 4pm, will feature over 300 different species of native plants suitable for the Echuca Moama region.

“The native plant showcase is the ideal place for people who are new to the area, or building a new home, to find out what natives grow best and would suit the local environment,” Australian Plants Society Echuca president Sue Robertson said.

“The importance of native flowers in our gardens is to attract native bees, wild birds and wildlife.

“If it is an endangered species of plant, it can be carried on from being in people’s gardens, where it can be preserved.”

The showcase will feature displays from Goldfields Revegetation nursery and include a basket weaver from Rochester, along with a diorama of eremophila and wild native flower paintings.

Both the onsite nurseries and members of the Australian Plants Society, Echuca, will be available on the day to answer any questions you have about growing native plants in the region.

“At this time of year, many natives are flowering in the garden,” Sue said.

“If you plant your native garden properly, you will always have something flowering in the garden and natives can be quite beautiful.”

Sue offered advice for native plant care.

“Native plants don’t like a lot of phosphorus, so

you don’t use normal plant fertiliser to feed them,” she said.

“If your natives look a bit poorly, the best thing to feed them with is a bit of liquid seaweed.”

The Australian Plants Society meets at the Campaspe Library in Echuca on the fourth Thursday of each month, from February to November, with field trips throughout the year.

Entry to the showcase includes tea and coffee, and plants will be available for purchase.

Echuca Masonic Lodge, located at 426 High St, Echuca, is wheelchair accessible with ramp access and accessible toilets.

Fabulous food and wine fest

THE STANHOPE FOOD AND WINE FESTIVAL RETURNS TO BIRDWOOD AVE ON OCTOBER 5, PROMISING A FEAST OF FLAVOURS, WINES, AND ENTERTAINMENT FROM 11AM TO 4PM.

The festival has evolved into a notable regional attraction.

“We surveyed people, and they came from all over Victoria, some were holidaying in the area and came along, others were on holiday in the area because they knew the event was on,”

Stanhope Food and Wine Festival Committee member Christine Dicketts said.

“This is our fourth festival”, she said, highlighting the event’s steady growth.

“We had 750 to 800 people in 2024, you try and record it, but it is a bit hard.”

Christine has revealed an exciting musical line-up for this year’s event.

“We will have three different musicians, JB and Me, Tim Richards and The Healers,” she said.

“We know that all the bands are good, that is why we booked them.”

Festival-goers can sample wines from local producers, including Ned Kelly Callipari Wines, Bruno’s at Strathbogie, and Wine by Sam.

The culinary offerings span a globe-trotting menu, featuring Ceylon and Japanese cuisine, alongside gelato and gluten-free options.

Dairy Fresh Gelato owners Felice and Irene Sgammotta will be among the vendors.

“Our gelato does have a different texture from normal ice-cream,” they said.

“The flavour is a lot stronger, because firstly we use organic milk to make our gelato, so it has a more intense flavour.”

The Stanhope Food and Wine Festival is important to businesses like Dairy Fresh Gelato because it exposes its products to new audiences and allows people to taste the yummy gelato.

“Our most popular flavours would be chocolate, chocolate chip, pistachio, creamy mango, mint and the kids love our bubblegum flavour,” they said.

“We always get the thumbs up from kids when we give them a little bit of our bubblegum gelato.”

There will be a variety of children’s entertainment, including horse and cart rides, face painting, and a jumping crocodile castle.

Entry requires a gold coin donation.

The organisers emphasise the festival is glass-free and smoke-free, with no dogs permitted.

Eats and Beats goes on

THE TONGALA EATS AND BEATS FESTIVAL WILL RETURN ON SUNDAY, OCTOBER 12 BRINGING TOGETHER FOOD, MUSIC AND COMMUNITY SPIRIT IN THE HEART OF THE VICTORIAN TOWN, FROM 11AM TO 3PM.

The alcohol-free, family-friendly celebration will showcase food trucks and vendors serving up a diverse range of cuisines from Indian dishes to doughnuts, alongside the traditional Tongala Primary School barbecue.

At the time of printing What’s On, the fantastic music line-up for the 2025 Eats and Beats was yet to be announced, but if 2024 is anything to go by, expect artists again with the calibre of Grim Fawkner, Jessica Lorraine, with special guest Toby Brooks.

There are lots of kids’ activities, face painting, all the old-school games, bubbles, and other entertainment options to keep the kids engaged, located near the music, so that dads can stand in the shade, eating an ice-cream, and keep an eye on the kids.

A key enhancement to this year’s festivities is the newly constructed access ramp at the soundshell, following community feedback to Campaspe Shire Council.

The ramp means that there are now no limits as to who we can be part of the event, allowing the music at the soundshell.

The event, backed by Community Bank Tongala and Mathoura, and Campaspe Shire Council, will feature popular food vendors including Harry-Os, the Port Ice Creamery and a smoothie truck.

Local eateries will join the celebration, with nearby cafes providing coffee and hot food options.

People are encouraged to bring their picnic blankets and kick back on the grass at the Tongala Soundshell and shire lawns.

Build skills at sports day

A FREE SPORTS INTRODUCTION DAY FOR ADULTS AND CHILDREN WITH DISABILITIES WILL BE HELD AT ECHUCA STADIUM IN OCTOBER, OFFERING PARTICIPANTS THE OPPORTUNITY TO TRY VARIOUS SPORTS AND CONNECT WITH SPORTING PROVIDERS.

Campaspe Murray River Abilities Unleashed Adults will run from 10 am to noon, with Unleashed Kids running from 12.30 pm to 2.30 pm on Wednesday, October 15 at Echuca Stadium, 244 High St, Echuca.

The day is being organised by Disability Sports Australia in collaboration with Campaspe Shire Council and Murray River Council.

“The idea is that for a lot of people with disability, they are not aware of local programs that they can actually get involved in,” Disability Sports Australia chief executive officer Aidan Shaw said.

“The day gives them a chance to try a whole range of different sports.

“It is really important because people with disability don’t have the same access to sport as those without disability.

“There is actually a lot of opportunity in mainstream sport for people with disability that they are not aware of.”

The initiative aims to foster social connections and promote health benefits in an inclusive, welcoming setting.

This year’s activities could be wheelchair rugby, wheelchair basketball, AFL and cricket, blending mainstream sports with those specifically designed for people with disability.

“Being able to do this provides great social connections, friendship, belonging and also more importantly, it gives really important physical, social and mental health benefits that sports provide,” Aidan said.

“The other aspect, too, is that it gives disability providers the chance to bring their clients down and do those activities in a really safe and welcoming environment as well.”

Disability Sport Australia focuses on grassroots sport, ensuring that anyone can participate in any sport they choose in a way that suits them.

Dinosaurs delight crowd

THE KYABRAM AGRICULTURAL SHOW IS A VIBRANT MIX OF ENTERTAINMENT AND COMMUNITY ACTIVITIES, INCLUDING CARNIVAL ALLEY AND THE ALLIMPORTANT SHOWBAGS.

The Kyabram Show is set to transform the Kyabram Showgrounds at 390 Allan St on Saturday, October 18.

Kyabram AH&P Society Inc secretary Filipa Marshall has confirmed the return of the beloved animal nursery, alongside an exciting new attraction, Dinkum Dinosaurs.

“We are having Dinkum Dinosaurs, which is a dinosaur puppet show, that will run over four different time slots over the day,” she said.

“With the dinosaur puppet show, they also have dinosaurs of a size that kids can sit on and have their photo taken.”

Building on last year’s success, which saw “more than 500 dogs of all different breeds”, the renowned dog show returns as a highlight.

The agricultural heritage shines through with displays of horses, cattle, and goats, with Filipa particularly enthusiastic about the introduction of “an all-breeds beef show”.

“We have the pavilion craft, which again will be free entry for people, free entry to any of the pavilion categories,” Filipa said.

“We will have the young ambassador and rural ambassador competition and we are looking for people either under 18 or 18 to 30, who feel that they could represent the area to put their best foot forward and enter.

“The young ambassador and rural ambassador are great opportunities for young people to represent their community and the region.”

Those interested in pavilion entries need to submit by the Wednesday before the show.

In a fresh take on tradition, the show introduces fashions on the field for all age groups, replacing the previous showgirl competition.

“Fashion on the field starts with an under-12 months category and goes up to the over-40s,” Filipa said.

“Everyone can come along in their best outfit and possibly win fashion on the field.”

The success of the event hinges on community involvement, with about 60 volunteers serving as stewards across different sections.

“It is a huge community effort, which is pretty awesome,” Filipa said.

“We can’t do the Kyabram Show without the support of the community, whether it be volunteers, or the lots of different sponsors.”

There will be printed schedules available around Kyabram, but instead of printing hundreds of them, postcards with a QR code will be used, allowing people to scan and access the schedule online.

Cast a line at carp catch

THE STRATHALLAN FAMILY LANDCARE GROUP IS GEARING UP FOR ITS ANNUAL CAMPASPE CARP CATCH ON OCTOBER 19, BUILDING ON THE SUCCESS OF PREVIOUS EVENTS THAT HAVE HELPED REDUCE INVASIVE CARP NUMBERS IN THE RIVER.

“We had about 350 people show up the first time and pulled 360 fish out of the river,” Strathallan Family Landcare member Veronica Groat said.

“The next year we had a smaller number of people, still about 200 people, and we pulled the same number of fish out.”

The event will be held from 11 am at the Rochester River Reserve, next to the bridge and opposite the old cheese factory.

All you need to do is turn up on the day, register, and then walk (or drive if you like) to find a spot along the Campaspe River to fish.

“The number of fish that have been taken out of the area is fantastic,” Veronica said.

“That part of the Campaspe River in Rochester has been a fantastic spot to hold the carp catch.”

The Rochester Branch of Bendigo Bank is providing financial backing, while the Rochester and District Angling Club will assist with operations.

“We are only a small Landcare group, and most of us are getting on a bit, and needed some help when the fish came in,” Veronica said.

“The anglers’ club have a special fish measuring device that they are going to let us use.”

Recent survey results from the North Central Catchment Management Authority have shown promising signs for native fish populations.

Environmental Flows project manager Darren White reported increased numbers of Murray cod across all reaches, higher golden perch numbers, and the first recorded sightings of silver perch and trout cod in certain areas.

“It is important to take carp out of the Campaspe because they are an introduced species, they are a bottom dweller down in the mud and that doesn’t help out native fish who are seriously affected by the mud,” Veronica said.

“And the carp are pretty aggressive.

“The native fish, if they get a bit of a go, they can fight back, and this is what we are hoping for.”

The group meets at the Rochester Hotel on the last Sunday of each month and new members are welcome.

Rock and roll it

A

NOSTALGIC MUSICAL TRIBUTE FEATURING THE HITS OF THE EVERLY BROTHERS, BUDDY HOLLY AND JOHNNY O’KEEFE IS SET TO ROCK RICH RIVER GOLF CLUB ON SUNDAY, OCTOBER 19 AT 2PM.

Performers Steven Burns and Rick Guci have been delivering their harmonious show for several years, celebrating the golden era of 1950s rock and roll.

“I used to do a Buddy Holly show on my own, and then I met Rick through music, and we worked out pretty quickly that we harmonised well together,” Steven said.

“We thought, well, we’d better do a show together.” The duo recently added an Australian element to their performance, with Rick taking on the role of Johnny O’Keefe.

“We have three shows in one, Everly Brothers, Buddy Holly and Johnny O’Keefe, and it is good to have an Aussie element to the show,” Steven said. Steven revealed his favourite song to perform is Buddy Holly’s It Doesn’t Matter Anymore, while Rick favours Everyday.

The pair shares a special fondness for the Everly Brothers’ Walk Right Back.

“There are a lot of numbers that get the crowds on their feet and onto the dance floor,” Steven said.

“Shout by Johnny O’Keefe is always a winner, people love that.

“A lot of people say, we only know a few Everly Brothers songs, a few Buddy songs, and then you play them all and they say, ‘I didn’t realise I knew all of them, it just brought back memories’.”

The free entry show promises to be a memorable experience for music lovers.

Vehicles lovers look out

THE LOCKINGTON AND DISTRICT LIVING HERITAGE COMPLEX IS GEARING UP FOR ITS ANNUAL HERITAGE TRANSPORT DISPLAY ON NOVEMBER 1 AND 2, SHOWCASING AN ARRAY OF VINTAGE AND MODERN VEHICLES ALONGSIDE ECHUCA TRUCK CLUB.

Echuca Moama Truck Club president Rossco Talbot warmly invites enthusiasts of all vehicle types to join the event.

“Anything and everything will be on display at the Lockington Heritage Transport display,” he said.

“Any age group, anything around the transport division, cars, trucks, motorbikes.

“At the Echuca Truck Club, we like to stay local and support locals around the Campaspe area.

“We run 100 km each side of the river, north and south of the river and 50 odd kilometres in each direction along the river.”

The event will run from 10 am to 3 pm, offering a fantastic opportunity for exhibitors to showcase their vehicles at no cost.

“There is no pre-registration; people can just turn up with their vehicles, it is a display only,” Rossco said.

The Heritage Complex, nestled at 2–10 Market St, Lockington, is a treasure trove of historical wonders, including what’s believed to be Australia’s first

pop-top caravan from 1939, a beautifully restored tram, locally crafted tractors, and a fascinating steam truck.

Rossco acknowledged last year’s contributors to the transport display.

“We would like to thank Rich River Truck Repairs,” he said.

“Nichol Trading put on an outstanding display last year with their road trains and everything on display, and hopefully, they will be there again this year.

“Our club goes along and supports the Lockington Heritage Centre, which is well worth supporting.

Embracing the charm of traditional country gatherings, the weekend promises a delightful spread featuring a bustling coffee van, sizzling BBQ, fresh sandwiches, homemade cakes and cold drinks.

Other car and truck clubs are welcome to turn up to the Lockington Heritage Transport display and have a good time.

Showdown builds spirit

THE THIRD ANNUAL SHOWDOWN AT THE SOUNDSHELL IS SET TO RETURN TO THE GARGARRO BOTANIC GARDENS ON NOVEMBER 15.

The showdown is building on the success of previous years’ events that have attracted young talent from across Victoria.

“We are hoping to have 20 young people with various talents, performance talents, come up on stage and do their thing, whatever music genre they like,” Showdown at the Soundshell Committee member Lisa Smith said.

“The feedback we have had from the parents of the kids participating is that it is just absolutely sensational, because there is not a lot of opportunity for kids who are not into sport to actually get involved in something like this in the area.

“We have had people from all over the state involved — singers, piano players, saxophonists, guitarists — all come and put their best foot forward.”

The competition, open to performers aged 12 to 18, will follow the successful format of previous years.

Three judges will evaluate contestants based on confidence, ability, and audience engagement, with the top three finalists performing an additional song.

Last year’s event saw Shepparton duo Kaitlyn Martin, 15, and Aditi Xavier, 17, claim victory with renditions of Alicia Keys’ If I Ain’t Got You and Coldplay’s Fix You

Bendigo busker Emma Gleeson secured second place, while 12-year-old Indigenous artist Joey Possum-Fox took third with his didgeridoo performance.

The winner will receive $1000, with cash prizes also available for second and third place. Food and drinks will be available on site during the event.

Participants under-16 years of age require parental consent for all applications.

Applications can be submitted through the Showdown at the Soundshell Facebook page or at girgarre.com.au

Big events in line of fire

ECHUCA CLAY TARGET CLUB IS ONE OF THE PREMIER VENUES FOR HIGH-LEVEL SHOOTING, AND THE CLUB WILL AGAIN HOST SOME OF THE COUNTRY’S BEST IN THE COMING MONTHS.

One of the highlights will be the Victorian Clay Target Association State Trap Carnival, which is this year set to run from Thursday, November 6 to Sunday, November 9.

Northwards of 300 top quality shooters are set to hit Echuca-Moama to compete in men’s, women’s, junior and veteran categories.

“It’s fantastic for the town,” Echuca Clay Target Club president Nick Dean said.

“Those shooters have partners and family, and there’s thousands of people just wandering through the site out there.

“They have the trade displays and everything open on the weekend and a couple of thousand people at any one time out there.”

The best of the best will be in attendance in an attempt to qualify for the Victorian state team.

Last year’s event included three Olympians.

“It’ll be a great spectacle for anyone who wanted to come along and see some of the better athletes not only in Australia but in the world competing,”

Victorian Clay Target Association vice-president Travis Williams said of last year’s event.

Trap isn’t the only discipline coming to Echuca, as the club is also set to host top skeet shooters in September.

Handicap, doubles and the premier championships event will be held across the weekend.

The North East Zone/VCTA two-day Skeet Carnival will be held on Saturday, September 13 and Sunday, September 14.

Ready, set, race

AS THE WEATHER WARMS UP, ECHUCA RACING CLUB WILL HOST TWO OF ITS BIGGEST ANNUAL RACE MEETS IN SPRING WITH THOUSANDS EXPECTED TO ENJOY PLENTY OF ACTION ON AND OFF THE TRACK.

ERC’s Spring into Racing event will be held on Saturday, September 20 which will not only celebrate the end of winter, but the start of a busy period for racing for the club.

“We’ve got our Spring into Racing event coming up that has been growing over the last couple of years with a lot of end-of-season trips and other events,” ERC track manager Jarratt Farley said.

“It has become our fifth major race day with plenty of things happening on and off the track with the Wildlings headlining that event.”

The meet’s dress code is country casual, with a range of hospitality packages available and courtesy buses running throughout the day.

ERC will also host its annual Moama Bowling Club Melbourne Cup Day Races on Tuesday, November 4 with a full race form expected and the return of the Fashions on the Field competition.

You can choose to enjoy the event in an allinclusive marquee, opt for an umbrella package

or even a custom private package as well as general admission.

Considered one of the standout racing events on Country Victoria’s 2025 race calendar, there will be courtesy buses running throughout the day to suit your needs.

“We’ve got free kid’s activities, live music and hospitality packages to entertain all ages which is our standard for a big race day out here,” Jarratt said.

“Spring is always a great time to race; it’s the time of year when things are starting to heat up again, and its great for us to be able to tie a couple of events in with a great season.

“We always try and make every race meeting as enjoyable and successful for everyone as we can, so they can just get here and enjoy a good day of racing.

“Our tickets for Melbourne Cup Day will go on sale at the end of July, we are always tinkering to make it a bigger and better day every year.”

Gunbower gears up for cup

AFTER ITS BEST-ATTENDED EVENT EVER IN 2024, THE GUNBOWER GOLD CUP WILL BE BACK JUST AS BIG IN 2025.

“Last year it was 2906, our biggest crowd ever, which is just absolutely amazing,” Gunbower Racing Club president Vicki McGillivray said.

“We were so happy with how it ran.”

The club’s only meeting of the year had been plagued with misfortune since its running in 2019, with first COVID-19 and then poor weather keeping horses off the track, but the event surged back into form last year for one of its best runnings yet.

Plenty of action will be in store on and off the track, with the club hoping to build on last year’s winning formula.

Seven races are scheduled at this stage, with an eighth likely if nominations are plentiful.

Off the course, fashions on the field will make a return, with last year’s event boasting a $12,000 prize pool.

There will be a swathe of free options to keep the kids entertained, as well as live music and the TAB on site.

Buses will run from Echuca-Moama, Gunbower, Torrumbarry, Kerang, Koondrook, Cohuna, Barham and Leitchville, as well as Gunbower itself, to get people to and from the venue.

“We offer a very relaxed country atmosphere, full of fun, and full of activities,” Vicki said.

“Lots of beautiful people, but we also have the city extras.”

The Moama Bowling Club Gunbower Gold Cup will be held on Saturday, October 4 at the Gunbower Racing Club.

Ticketing information can be found at country.racing.com/gunbower/calendar/ gunbower-gold-cup

With two massive nighttime concerts and a vibrant Day Stage schedule over both days, the entertainment will be non-stop.

Beyond the music, the muster offers a range of classic competitions such as the Ute Show ‘n’

Shine, driving challenges and the World Record Blue Singlet Count.

Vintage car spectacle revs up

THE ROCHESTER MOTORING CLUB IS GEARING UP FOR ITS ANNUAL SHOW AND SHINE EVENT AT THE ROCHESTER RACECOURSE RECREATION RESERVE ON SATURDAY, OCTOBER 25 FROM 9AM TO 3PM.

Club vice-president Merv Wild said the event, which runs alongside the town market, attracted impressive numbers last year.

“In 2024, we had just on 300 cars, 80 motorbikes and half a dozen trucks come along to the Show and Shine,” he said.

The club, which boasts 184 registered vehicles, welcomes a diverse range of vintage transport.

“We have everything from old Chevys, we have got an AJAX, which is an unusual one, we have a Bentley, we have a bit of everything,” Merv said.

“We call ourselves the Rochester Motoring Club, and as long as the vehicles are over 25 years old, they qualify for membership.

“We have that many members mainly because we have no restrictions on the number of meetings you have to attend or what types of vehicles can join.

“But they have to turn up to get their club registration signed twice a year.”

Merv himself owns a 37 Oldsmobile and an EJ Holden Premier.

“The EJ has only 61,000 miles on it, so it is in pretty nice condition, although it has been completely rebuilt because she got drowned in the floods in 2011,” he said.

The event holds special significance for the community.

“It will be three years exactly since we were flooded, and there are still a lot of homes in Rochester that haven’t been started yet, so the show and shine is a bit of a morale booster for the town as well,” Merv said.

Entry fees are $10 for show and shine participants and a $2 donation for spectators.

“The money goes to running the club, as we are a non-profit organisation, but we look after a few other charities around town as well,” Merv said.

Vehicles can arrive from 8 am at the Rochester 4R’s on Diggora Rd, Rochester.

The Rochester Show and Shine will run in conjunction with the Rochester Market, featuring art, crafts, a sausage sizzle and food trucks.

Visitors can explore the innovative Girgarre Sound Walk, which combines music with the garden experience.

Opera with a revenge twist

A RARE OPERATIC TREAT AWAITS AN ECHUCA MOAMA AUDIENCE WHEN LYSTER OPERA PRESENTS THE MERRY WIVES OF WINDSOR AT THE UNITING CHURCH ON NOVEMBER 16.

The production is helmed by director Daniel Sinfield, whose credentials include performances with Opera Australia and a wealth of international experience.

“I sang all around the world, doing different productions in China, Berlin, Austria, Malaysia and then re-trained and added a master’s degree to my skill set about 10 years ago and now I am an opera director, primarily,” he said.

The stellar cast comprises accomplished performers from Opera Victoria and Opera Australia, including a former singer from Germany’s prestigious Wiesbaden Opera.

“They are talented, very experienced singers, bringing high-quality work,” Daniel said.

Founded by Jamie Moffat, the opera company honours the legacy of William Saurin Lyster (1828–1880), an Irish entrepreneur who pioneered opera in colonial Australia.

The Merry Wives of Windsor was a Shakespeare play, originally, and in the opera world, the plot is more commonly known by the name Falstaff, as there is a more popular opera written by Verdi that is based on the same play.

The plot centres on Falstaff, a knight who courts trouble by sending identical love letters to two married women.

“Because they are best friends, they decide that they are going to get back at him, because it is very inappropriate to be writing saucy letters to married women,” Daniel said.

“So, they decide that they are going to get some revenge and play some games with him.

“I would probably call it one of the few feminist operas out there, seeing how most women in opera are treated pretty badly, but these women are the heroes of the story.

“It is all good fun and good-humoured.”

Events on at the Echuca Moama Uniting Church this spring include:

• Echuca Bellas and Southern Voices performance and workshop on September 13 at 2 pm.

• Bendigo Chorale on October 12 at 2 pm.

• Lyster Opera on November 16 at 2 pm.

The Echuca Moama Uniting Church is located at 115–117 Hare St, Echuca, with tickets for all events available at the door.

New team, same Sweat vs Steam

SWEAT VS STEAM HAS UNDERGONE CHANGES BEHIND-THE-SCENES, BUT THE SAME RACE WILL BE ON IN 2025.

Sweat vs Steam is a unique running event that sees participants take on one of Echuca-Moama’s historic paddle steamers, attempting to beat the vessel to the line.

There are 10 km, 5 km, 2 km junior river run and kids dash events available for runners of any age and persuasion.

A new group of organisers has taken over for 2025, with the previous co-ordinators providing assistance

One of the new event organisers, runner Brady Threlfall, said it was an easy choice to jump in and help keep the event alive.

“The event was looking like it wasn’t going to continue, and they put it out for someone to take over,” he said.

“We didn’t want it to die because it’s such a unique and established event in town.”

This year’s event has been moved to Sunday, November 16 from last year’s October date, in part to create some space from the Melbourne Marathon, but also to hopefully bring some warmer weather to the event.

The event is also a charity event, with the proceeds to be returned to the community.

Brady said the new organisers were not looking to reinvent the wheel with the established event.

“It’s a successful event, it has been for many years, so we don’t want to change too many things and really highlight that relationship of trying to get to the finish line before the paddle steamer does,” Brady said.

“(We want to) showcase as many beautiful river trails as we can on the course this year.”

Sweat vs Steam will be held on Sunday, November 16. For more information or to register, visit www.sweatvssteam.com.au

Paddlers pumped up

THE MURRAY RIVER WILL GET ITS ANNUAL SHOWCASE AGAIN THIS YEAR AS THE MASSIVE MURRAY PADDLE FLOWS THROUGH THE REGION.

The event sees paddlers cover 415 km of river over five days, starting from Yarrawonga. Stop-offs are made at Tocumwal, Picnic Point, Moama, and Torrumbarry before the concluding leg sees paddlers finish up in Koondrook.

Last year was the first where paddlers completed that final leg, with various factors preventing that part of the course from being used.

“We’re very positive, it’s all well on track,” organiser Shannon O’Brien said.

“We’ve seen (that) although we’ve still got a few months left for people to register, we’re still already above what we were last year, which is really promising.”

There are options to take on the paddle, solo or in teams, or even split the legs in a relay.

Kayaks, canoes and stand-up paddleboards are all supported, with any type of paddler accepted.

Participants are encouraged to raise money for a cause of their choice, with Massive Murray Paddlers raising more than $1.2 million since 2016.

More than 300 paddlers are signed up for the 2025 event so far.

Last year’s event included paddlers from the United States as well as a pairing between

“It’s already in a very good direction, but I think it’s the type of people who are re-entering,” Shannon said.

“They’re big community groups, and I think that is more in the spirit of what the race is evolving into.”

The Massive Murray Paddle will be held from Monday, November 17 to Friday, November 21. Paddlers will finish leg three at Moama Beach on Wednesday, and leave from Moama on Thursday morning.

Wonderland comes to life

FOLLOW THE WHITE RABBIT DOWN THE RABBIT HOLE AND COME OUT AT ALICE’S TEA PARTY THIS SUMMER

An enchanting sand sculpture trail bringing beloved Alice in Wonderland scenes to life will transform Echuca Moama into a whimsical wonderland from December 13 to March 9.

The free, all-ages attraction, Wonderland on the Murray, will feature eight stunning, meticulously crafted sand sculptures at popular spots, kicking off at the Port of Echuca’s River Boat Dock and wrapping up at Kerrabee Reserve in Moama. Visitors will be mesmerised by larger-than-life sculptures depicting unforgettable scenes: Alice tumbling down the rabbit hole, the wise Caterpillar perched on his mushroom, the mischievous grin of the Cheshire Cat, and the charming White Rabbit’s House.

Adventurers will follow the whimsical trail as it

meanders through the historic port precinct and lush Aquatic Reserve, then crosses the mighty Murray River into Moama.

The journey culminates in a delightful surprise — Alice’s Tea Party at the Moama Soundshell, serving as the grand finale.

Murray River Council, Campaspe Shire Council and Campaspe Port Enterprise have partnered with Sandstorm Events to deliver this unique installation. Don’t miss a moment of the magic, visit Echuca Moama on social media for exclusive behind-thescenes glimpses and event updates.
