Discover the Edward River in Deniliquin

At the heart of Deniliquin flows the Edward River (Kolety) – a shimmering ribbon of water that captures the essence of the region’s natural beauty.

From well-loved beaches and inviting swimming spots to boat ramps and long stretches perfect for kayaking, the river is a playground for locals and visitors alike. Fishing enthusiasts will delight in the chance to catch a Murray Cod, while spring and summer see the river come alive with activity.

But you don’t need to get wet to appreciate its charm. The Beach to Beach Walk offers a scenic route from McLean Beach in the west to Willoughby’s Beach in the east, meandering past the Deniliquin CBD, serene sitting areas, intriguing sculptures, and the peaceful Deniliquin Island Sanctuary. It’s a chance to soak in the river’s beauty at a gentle pace.

For thrill-seekers, the Edward River delivers plenty of adrenaline. Speed boats and wake boats zip along the ski zone downstream of McLean Beach, while those looking for a quieter experience can explore the noski zone upstream by houseboat, canoe, or kayak. Along the way, the river’s banks, lined with majestic river red gums, create a relaxing and picturesque backdrop.

McLean Beach is a hub of activity. With barbecue facilities, bathrooms, a public boat ramp, and ample parking, it’s perfect for a full day on the water –whether you’re swimming, boating, or simply relaxing on the sandy shore.

At the eastern end, Willoughby’s Beach, located within the Murray Valley Regional Park, offers sandy beaches, shady trees, and a pet-friendly environment, making it ideal for swimming, fishing, camping, or simply floating along the river on your favourite water device.

Deniliquin boasts five public boat ramps, with another at Benarca Bend for those venturing a little further out:

• Sloane Street Boat Ramp, Sloane Street, Deniliquin

• Harfleur Street Boat Ramp, Harfleur Street, Deniliquin

• McLean Beach Boat Ramp, Butler Street, Deniliquin

• Twin Rivers Boat Ramp, Riverina Highway, Deniliquin

• Lawson Syphon Boat Ramp, Lawson Syphon Road, Deniliquin

• Benarca Bend Boat Ramp, Stevens Weir Road, Deniliquin

For the latest updates on boat ramp conditions, check the RMS website.

Whether you’re chasing adventure or seeking a peaceful riverside escape, the Edward River offers the perfect backdrop for an unforgettable day in Deniliquin.

Spirit of the Muster

The excitement of the Deni Ute Muster will again spill into the Deniliquin CBD this year, with the return of Spirit of the Muster. Ute displays will be complemented by a number of interactive activities, demonstrations, business specials, and market stalls.

Centred on Cressy St and the Deniliquin Waring Gardens, the event is a collaboration between the Edward River Council and the Deniliquin Business Chamber, with the support of the Deni Ute Muster team.

Leading up to the Wednesday, October 1 event will be a Muster Spend ‘n’ Win shop-local competition. For every $25 spent in a participating store, you go in the draw to win one of three prize packs valued at more than $1,000. These will include Ute Muster merchandise, the chamber’s shop-local gift cards,

and more. Winners will be announced at the Spirit of the Muster fun day, where there will be a ute display of the festival’s Show ‘n’ Shine entrants and Instinct Media’s curated collection of utes.

Monster trucks and vehicles from local car collectors will add to the display. Also on offer will be a bucket drumming activity, an interactive art activity, music from South West Music, and a ‘Yard of Utes’ colouring competition display.

The businesses in the CBD are all encouraged to get involved to offer retail specials, and there will be

market and food and beverage stalls available too. There will be plenty of giveaways and competitions for kids, and the winners of the business and farmgate decoration competitions will be announced. More details about these competitions will be released soon.

All this fun will be packed into five hours, running from 11am to 4pm. Make sure you’re part of the action.

Follow the Deniliquin Business Chamber’s socials and visit their website www.deniliquinchamber.com.au.

The Music

Six bands with international and national acclaim will take to the famous Deniliquin Ute Muster main stage each night of the event.

On the Day Stage, 13 different acts will perform during the week, and there’ll also be time set aside for Bogan Bingo.

But more on our main stage artists …

Friday night:

Homegrown Trio – Comprised of siblings Katelyn, Kasey, and Liam O’Donoghue, the trio found their love for music on their family’s cattle ranch in northern Queensland before appearing on The Voice Australia in 2018. They earned a four-chair turnaround from the coaches, ultimately choosing Joe Jonas as their coach. Jonas later signed them to his record label, Let’s Get It Records.

Kasey Chambers – Australian country music royalty, Chambers’ distinctive voice, heartfelt lyrics, and world-class performances have earned her recognition as one of the most acclaimed artists of her generation. She is currently touring nationally with her new album Backbone and reflecting on 25 years since her first Deni Ute Muster appearance.

Kaylee Bell – Originally from New Zealand, Bell moved across the ditch to Australia at age 21. She kickstarted her career by winning the prestigious Toyota Star Maker crown. With over 40 million streams, Bell is the ‘Most Streamed Female Country Artist’ for Australasia. She made history as the firstever independent female country artist to be awarded ARIA Gold (The Red EP) and the first female country artist in 20 years, since Kasey Chambers, to achieve this milestone.

Jackson Dean – One of Nashville’s most intriguing artists, Dean is known for his gravel-toned vocals, wayward spirit, and lyric-driven songwriting. Since bursting onto the scene in 2022, he has earned a reputation for his thought-provoking music and powerful live shows.

Lane Pittman – At just 18, Tamworth-raised Pittman is Australia’s breakout star and a leader in the new wave of country music. With Golden Guitars, stadium tours, chart-topping releases, and viral moments, he is making an impact on every front.

Furnace & The Fundamentals – Playing an eclectic blend of the best songs ever written, this energetic band delivers hits with all the character of the original – and twice the energy.

Saturday night:

Wade Forster – Toyota Star Maker 2024 winner, Forster brings cowboy grit, raw storytelling, and high-energy shows. His authentic style is making waves in both Australia and the U.S.

John Williamson – Best known for Old Man Emu, Williamson celebrates 55 years in the industry in 2025, and also turns 80. With more than 500 songs recorded, 28 Golden Guitars, six ARIA Awards, an Order of Australia, and inductions into both the ARIA

country celebration at the

Hall of Fame and the Australian Roll of Renown, his legacy is unmatched.

Max Jackson – From humble beginnings in Coonamble, NSW, to winning Australia’s biggest country music competition and performing at national and international festivals, Jackson has won three Golden Guitars in the past two years alone.

Troy Cassar-Daley – A defining voice in Australian country music, Cassar-Daley is a passionate storyteller with 45 Golden Guitar Awards (the most of any artist) and a string of other accolades.

The Wolfe Brothers – More than a decade after appearing on Australia’s Got Talent in 2012, this beloved band continues to thrill audiences across Australia, the USA, and Canada. They return to the Muster in 2025, ready for more road miles.

Zac Brown Band – Headlining the 2025 Deni Ute Muster is multi-platinum, Grammy Award-winning

Southern rock act, Zac Brown Band. With six consecutive albums reaching the Billboard 200 Top 10 and five debuting at No. 1 on Billboard’s Country Albums chart, they are one of the world’s biggest acts.

For the first time, the vibrant Edward River region has its very own online showcase. VisitDeni.com has launched as a standalone website, offering an exciting new way to explore Deniliquin and its surrounding villages. This marks a major milestone for local tourism, providing a dynamic, interactive platform that captures the charm, character, and unique experiences of the region.

Previously part of the broader Visit the Murray website, VisitDeni.com now shines independently, designed to inspire both short overnight trips and extended escapes.

Visit the 'Rocket Park'

The famous Scott’s Park rocket in Deniliquin’s west is sure to send your child’s imagination into outer space, while giving you the rest and relaxation you need.

The Russell St park is now one of the most popular and highly recommended parks in the whole region.

There’s no secret as to why you should spend an afternoon enjoying its facilities with the whole family.

The park includes a flying fox, climbing net, climbing wall, sand digger, spin point twister, jolly

jeep, rocket ride and nature play equipment.

If that isn’t enough the park also features a BMX pump track, half basketball court and zipline.

The famous refurbished rocket, which gave the park its nickname, is also a popular play spot and a great photo op.

While the kids are running free, parents can sit back and relax with shelters, tables, and barbecue

facilities. A toilet is also located in the park.

An additional visual element has been added to the park thanks to the artistic makeover of the Russell St water tower by artist Cam Scales.

And right next door to the park is the Deniliquin Swim Centre, which boasts three pools, a hydrotherapy pool and a splash park for all to enjoy.

One standout feature is the one-click, printable itinerary builder, making it easier than ever to plan your perfect adventure. Whether it’s immersing yourself in outdoor adventures, discovering rich local history, enjoying vibrant arts and culture, or connecting with welcoming communities, the site brings it all together in one easy-to-navigate space.

The website also highlights the region’s exceptional local businesses, particularly in tourism, hospitality, and accommodation.

Designed to grow with the region, VisitDeni. com is regularly updated with fresh content to keep visitors engaged. Users can subscribe to a seasonal e-newsletter, ensuring the Edward River region remains top of mind for their next getaway. Integration with Instagram also brings the region’s stunning landscapes, lively events, and unique experiences to a wider audience.

Edward River Council invites everyone to explore VisitDeni.com and discover why the Edward River region is one of regional Australia’s most exciting destinations.

The Deniliquin Racing Club’s spring racing highlight is the 2025 Gold Cup, to be held on Saturday, October 18. After a Cup Day washout last year, the club is eagerly anticipating the return of this major event on the local racing calendar.

The feature race will be the Deniliquin RSL Club Gold Cup, sponsored by the Deniliquin RSL Club. Deniliquin will host a six-race card, forming part of a bumper day of horse racing and social events. The club reports that the track and surrounds are in excellent condition, with extensive work carried out to continue the tradition of providing great facilities and attracting large numbers of horses and racegoers.

Entertainment will include Fashions on the Field, which are always well-supported and offer great prizes. The Peppercorn Party Enclosure is set to be popular again, featuring live music by cover band Fall Out. Tickets are available on Eventbrite by searching Deniliquin Racing Club.

Explore history these holidays

Deniliquin and district have many amazing spaces in which you could while away the days. Deni is home to a number of great museums. Some explore our transport industry and rural life, others look at our pastoral and community history. Here’s a list of some of the spaces you can explore.

The Depot Historic Vehicle and Memorabilia Collection

Open seven days a week from 10am to 4pm, including over Easter, you can immerse yourself in the past amongst the family-friendly interactive displays and activities.

With touches of Hollywood, trucking and transport, Australian motoring, rescue vehicles and cars from all around the world, The Depot is full of nostalgia and discovery.

The Depot has grown around the historic vehicle and memorabilia collections of Neville and Debbie Purtill and the Purtill family. Throughout The Depot you are invited to reminisce and discover new stories of life at home and on the road.

If you find yourself hungry or thirsty after all your adventures at The Depot, you will find the Cruizin* Diner and Roadhouse right next door. You can choose from an extensive menu of food and drinks,

including an all-day breakfast menu, and there is an indoor kids’ play zone to keep the children busy.

You will find The Depot at 158 Hardinge Street, Deniliquin. Phone 1300 3 DEPOT (1300 333 768), visit depotdeni.com.au

Deniliquin & District Historical Society

The Deniliquin and District Historical Society Museum displays some of its oldest treasures in the freshest ways. The society intricately explores the rich and complex history of Deniliquin, with an original and authentic flair that will help even the most reluctant of tourists feel at home.

The museum has an enormous and well-cared-for collection, with a large variation in scope. With such a wealth of information on everything ‘Deni’, there is something for everybody — from history buffs to farming enthusiasts.

The building alone is something to behold, having once been the police inspector’s residence. The

open-faced museum is tasteful and an insight into riverside elegance. With a rose-studded garden crawling beside the footpath, the site is classically beautiful.

The Deniliquin and District Historical Society Museum is open on Tuesdays and Saturdays from 10am to noon, although you’re likely to find members there every day of the week who can help. Other than being closed on Good Friday, the museum is accessible throughout Easter. Viewings outside normal hours can also be booked by calling 0428 359 297.

Peppin Heritage Centre

Museum

and GALLERY

The Peppin Heritage Centre is situated in George Street, Deniliquin. It was originally the Deniliquin Public School, and renamed the Peppin Heritage Centre in honour of the Peppin family and the influence they had on the founding of the Merino sheep industry in the area.

Deniliquin Public School was the town’s first school.

The location was originally identified in 1857, with a brick schoolhouse erected in 1861. A survey conducted at the time revealed that only 138 of the 613 children living in the area attended school.

The original schoolhouse was demolished and replaced by a larger building in 1879. Due to continued growth, it was extended in 1899 and 1905, and continued to operate until 1972 when it finally closed its doors.

In the early 1980s a museum was incorporated into the Deniliquin Public School site, which had been occupied by the Historical Society since 1978 when Deniliquin Council became owners of the school and grounds, including the Headmaster’s Cottage.

In 1985 the museum was built and named the Peppin Heritage Centre. Soon after, the Warriston Ram Shed and yards were constructed on the grounds and became an iconic feature of the garden area, as did the Deniliquin Gaol, windmill, school bell and Flying School museum room.

Today, the building still includes a historical classroom, in addition to a museum which is currently undergoing an exciting upgrade expected to re-open in mid-2026. The centre also hosts regular exhibitions in the gallery and gardens and includes the Visitor Information Centre with souvenirs and local produce.

During Spring 2025, the Sculpture Muster 2025 is set to transform Deniliquin from 20 September to 19 October. Experience an inspiring exhibition of local talent at The Peppin Heritage Centre Gallery, featuring works by Rachel Braybon, Stuart Taylor, David St Leon and Miro Peterman.

This year marks the launch of the inaugural Anthony Breslin Art Prize - a must-see addition to the event! The Anthony Breslin Art Prize celebrates Deniliquin’s vibrant arts and culture scene, amplifies the creative voices of regional Australian youth, and unites the community through the power of art. It honours the enduring legacy of the late Anthony Breslin and his deep commitment to encouraging and nurturing creativity in everyone.

Ute Muster Museum

The Ute Muster Museum celebrates one of Australia’s most unique and iconic festivals, the Deni Ute Muster. Officially opened in 2021, the museum tells the story of the event’s beginnings in 1999 and its rise to become a national cultural phenomenon.

Visitors can explore interactive displays, honour boards, and memorabilia that bring the festival’s colourful history to life. Highlights include rare vehicles such as a 1979 “Bitza” ute and two 1960s

Isuzu Wasp utes, alongside collections of tickets, wristbands, and other keepsakes from past Musters.

The museum also features a reading library and regular exhibition updates, ensuring there’s always something new to discover. Outside, visitors can capture photos at the famous Muster gates and the towering 30-foot windmill, both iconic symbols of the event.

Located at 8235 Conargo Road, Deniliquin, the Ute Muster Museum is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm. Weekend visits can be arranged by appointment. A gold coin donation is appreciated for entry.

Yarkuwa Indigenous Knowledge Centre

The Yarkuwa Indigenous Knowledge Centre celebrates the rich culture, stories, and heritage of the Wiradjuri people, the traditional custodians of the Deniliquin region. Visitors can explore a collection of artworks, cultural artefacts, and educational displays that highlight the history and living culture of the local Indigenous community.

The centre hosts regular exhibitions, workshops, and cultural programs that provide insight into traditional practices, storytelling, and contemporary Indigenous art. Yarkuwa also serves as a community hub for preserving and sharing local Indigenous knowledge with both residents and tourists.

Located at 79 George Street, Deniliquin, the Yarkuwa Indigenous Knowledge Centre is open Tuesday to Friday from 10am to 4pm, and Saturdays from 10am to 2pm. Phone 03 5881 1900 for more information.

Where the wild things grow

When we head out on a bushwalk, most of us instinctively look up — the region’s vibrant birdlife is impossible to miss. But sometimes, the real treasures are right at our feet, quietly showcasing their beauty among the undergrowth.

Beneath the ubiquitous box trees that rise from the ochre-red soils along the Murrumbidgee River at Darlington Point, wildflowers flourish in spring’s first light. Late August brings the first signs of the season as wattles bloom, painting the landscape in vivid yellows. Keep an eye out for golden wattle (Acacia pycnantha), hedge wattle (Acacia paradoxa), and spreading wattle (Acacia genistifolia). Among grasslands, yellow billy buttons make their cheerful appearance, while the fiery Sturt’s Desert Pea occasionally graces roadsides and truck stops along the Hay Plains.

Another striking species is the sunny yellow senna artemisoides, or cassia, whose pea-like flowers and flat green pods resemble snow peas. This shrub can reach up to three metres tall and blooms from winter into spring. Delicate small-leaf waxflower (Philotheca difformis) adds subtle charm with its white, starshaped petals and orange-tipped stamens.

Early sightings of spider orchids and dwarf greenhood orchids invite an extra challenge: try identifying species by their leaves before the flowers appear. Visitors to Lockhart and The Rock can discover longleaf waxflower (Philotheca myoporoides) and downy zieria (Zieria cytisoides) in pink-to-white hues. Look carefully, and you might even spot the carnivorous, fuzzy, peach-coloured scarlet sundew, especially after a bushfire.

For serious enthusiasts, rarer finds include small purple-pea, buttercup doubletail, and Tarengo leek

orchid. Snap photos, note your location, and share them with local Landcare groups, who often collect data on threatened species.

Spring’s show isn’t limited to flowers — the wet winter has also brought a bounty of native fungi. Green lichen carpets rocks, while rusty-orange bracket fungi silently recycle trees. Tiny Lepiota mushrooms peek from the forest floor with their cream-brown caps, while the impressive Phelobus marginatus, Australia’s largest fungus, can reach a metre in diameter and is found in Cocoparra National Park near Leeton. xplore the park’s half-day walks for panoramic views of its rugged mountains and farmland below.

There’s never been a better time to explore the region’s flourishing flora.

Tips for a Responsible Wildflower

Walk:

• Keep shoes clean to avoid spreading disease.

• Look, don’t touch — wildflowers should remain undisturbed.

• Bring a guidebook or a plant-identifying app.

• Use a macro lens attachment on your phone to capture tiny details.

• Explore different altitudes: valleys reveal fungi and shade-loving plants, while hilltops host unique, sun-loving species.

Top Spots to Explore:

• Parks, reserves, and roadside stops across the Hay Plains

• Willbriggie State Forest, Darlington Point

• Gillenbah National Park, near Narrandera

• Mt Bunganbil and Mt Brobenah, near Lockhart and The Rock

• Cocoparra National Park, near Griffith and Leeton

From delicate wildflowers to massive fungi, the Riverina’s natural treasures are waiting to be discovered — right at your feet.

GOLFER’S PARADISE

Tee off in a natural wonderland

As

the Riverina region shakes off the winter chill, the Deniliquin Golf Club is gearing up for a vibrant spring season filled with competitive tournaments and social gatherings.

Whether you’re a seasoned golfer or a curious newcomer, there’s something for everyone on the fairways this spring.

Deniliquin is blessed to have a quality course located on the edge of the Murray Valley Regional Park, yet just a stone’s throw from the centre of town.

You can enjoy the beauty of this golf course alongside kangaroos, kookaburras, superb parrots, echidnas, goannas, lizards, pelicans, and a host of other wildlife that abound in this paradise of nature.

At its best, Deniliquin Golf Course, with its 18 manicured fairways and true greens, is a shining example of Australia’s magnificent golf courses.

If you’re looking for a trip away, the Deni Golf Resort has you covered with a range of packages built to take the stress out of finding accommodation. Its 22 units overlook the ninth fairway and are nestled among bushland. It’s just 30 metres from the resort to the first tee, and an even shorter distance to the bushwalk track.

The course perfectly reflects a chance for all golfing standards to enjoy a fun and challenging round.

By modern standards, the course is not long — 5,817 metres par 72 for men, and 5,118 metres par 72 for ladies. However, off the back tees, it is a challenge for all levels of player, as many professionals who have tried to tame the course have discovered.

Poor shots find the huge trees, or perhaps a creek or other water hazard. There are contrasting holes, with the ‘back six’ having been reconstructed to form part of the town’s levee bank system. The greens are fast but true and always in great condition.

A feature of Deniliquin Golf Course is the ‘same-day play’ principle that applies. On most days, you can phone the pro shop on (03) 5881 3333 to book your tee-off time, or just call in and one of the friendly volunteer staff will cater to your golfing needs. If you prefer the relaxation of a golf cart, there are plenty available too.

After your round on the course, enjoy the club’s facilities or relax under the verandah. Friday nights are a speciality in the clubhouse, with meat raffles, great meals, and a fun atmosphere where locals will make you feel welcome. For the latest information on clubhouse opening hours and activities, phone (03) 5881 1325.

If you want to practise your game, the club has an undercover driving range, which features an automated ball dispenser and lighting, allowing extended play on your terms. It’s simply a matter of getting a token or swiping your credit card to get a bucket of balls and work on your swing.

Visitors are also encouraged to enter any of the club’s regular competitions, which are listed on its website.

These include medley events every Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday.

In addition to its year-round golfing opportunities, Deniliquin Golf Club has an exciting line-up of upcoming events throughout the year.

October is all about high-stakes competition.

The Western Riverina District Golf Association Championships from October 11–12 will draw top talent from the Western Riverina, while the Veterans Week of Golf from October 13–17 celebrates senior players with a week of camaraderie and skill, proudly backed by the Purtill Group and the NSW Veterans Golfer Association.

Later in the month, the club hosts two prestigious professional events: the PGA Seniors Open Qualifier on October 27, followed by the PGA Pro-Am on October 28, where local amateurs get the rare chance to tee off alongside seasoned PGA professionals. The season culminates with the Spring Classic on November 8–9, a highlight of the club’s calendar that welcomes golfers of all levels for a weekend of spirited competition and celebration.

Keep an eye out for special charity days and competitions too, which are listed on the club website – www.denigolfclub.com.au

Reconnect with Nature

Spring is the perfect time to reconnect with nature, and River Country offers some of the very best experiences.

Nestled along the Murray River in New South Wales, this region combines adventure and serenity, with stunning river views and enchanting forest playgrounds awaiting exploration.

River Country is centred around the lively border towns of Echuca Moama and Barham Koondrook, while also embracing a number of small nearby communities. The region is renowned for its natural beauty, featuring peaceful waterways, majestic river red gums, abundant native wildlife, and vast open skies. Between Moama and Yanga, there is a wealth of nature experiences to enjoy. Here are just a few highlights:

Horseshoe Lagoon – Moama

Part of Moama’s Wetland and Floodplain Reserve, Horseshoe Lagoon features a horseshoe-shaped lagoon and a billabong that provide a home to native birds, animals, plants, and fish. Some Yorta Yorta elders describe the floodplains as “our supermarkets,” as they provided everything needed to sustain the first inhabitants of the region. Wander along the boardwalks, indulge in wildlife spotting, and learn about the importance of wetlands and floodplains

along the Murray River. The original Moama wharf was built here in 1879, but riverboats could only access it during high rivers, so it was abandoned. A new wharf, boardwalk, and signage were built in 1988.

Edward River Canoe and Kayak Trail –Mathoura/Picnic Point

Kayaking or canoeing along the Edward River in Murray Valley National Park offers a peaceful adventure. Choose a few hours, a full day, or a multiday journey, camping at various points along the way. With more than 60 km of water trails, paddlers of all ages and experience levels can enjoy quiet escapes away from the summer crowds on the Murray River. Along the trail, beaches and swimming spots provide perfect picnic stops.

Moulamein

Lake – Moulamein

Covering 15 hectares, Moulamein Lake is a popular destination for swimming, fishing, kayaking, and adrenaline-filled water sports. Wildlife spotting is a highlight, with black swans, pelicans, and ducks frequenting the area. Relax under one of

three shelters, use the free gas barbecues, or take advantage of nearby facilities, including the local swimming pool.

Discover Moulamein's treasures

Moulamein Heritage Village is celebrating local history in a new photography exhibition titled the Murray River Museums Project, funded by Murray River Council.

The exhibition highlights the historic buildings that have been relocated to Moulamein Heritage Village, including the Werai horse stables, built in the mid1800s. Before mechanisation, horses were essential to farming operations, pulling ploughs, harvesters, and sowing paddocks.

The Werai stables were painstakingly relocated and rebuilt over months by local builders Redfearn Trading and volunteers from the Moulamein Community Development Group Inc. Generously donated by the Bishop family, the stables feature comfortable, cool spaces for horses, as well as shelter for leather buggies. Grain and hay for the horses were also stored on-site.

Another highlight of the village is the Jeraly Woolshed, which houses historical machinery and vehicles that belonged to farming families in the Moulamein district. Moulamein Heritage Village has become a popular venue for the community, hosting weddings, funerals, festivals, and the iconic annual Moulamein Easter Yabby Races and Fair.

The village is open to individuals and groups by appointment, with an entrance fee of $5 per adult. Many groups, including vintage car clubs and U3A, take advantage of this spacious and unique venue for gatherings and day trips.

To book a visit, contact Deidre Howard, secretary of the Moulamein Community Development Group, on 0417 276 845 or email visit@moulameinheritagevillage. com.au

Good Old Days Festival

The Good Old Days Festival is set to make history in 2025, not only attempting to break the Australian record for the greatest number of draught horses in harness pulling a wool wagon, but also expanding into a three-day event.

Organised by the Barellan Working Clydesdale Committee, the Good Old Days Festival is the largest tourism event in the Narrandera Shire, contributing almost $2 million to the regional economy. This year’s event will be held on October 3–5 at the Barellan Showground.

Barellan Working Clydesdales president and master horseman Bruce Bandy, together with teamsters Steve Johnson (Lake Cargelligo), Aleks Berzins (Exeter) and Allison Prentice (Kamarah), will combine horses to break the Australian record of 50 horses harnessed to a wool wagon.

The festival set its own record in 2024 with 35 horses in harness, but in 2025 it will attempt to surpass the national record set in the mid-1980s at Carrara, Gold Coast, on Australia Day by Don Ross and Bluey Bunyan. That team featured 12 spans of four abreast and two back in the shafts.

Mr Bandy said harnessing more than 50 horses would take around two hours — a spectacle in itself. The team will include Clydesdale, Australian Draught

Horse, and Suffolk Punch breeds, all harnessed four abreast and driven by Bruce Bandy, Aleks Berzins and Steve Johnson, with Shane Carroll (Barellan) on the brake. Together they will pull a historic Bennett tabletop wagon loaded with wool bales.

New to the 2025 program is the Tim Peel Perpetual Youth Award, designed to encourage people under 30 to show initiative and leadership in preserving Australia’s heritage. The award will be judged on Sunday, October 5, alongside the horse teams competing for the Teamsters Trophy and mule teams vying for the Little Teamsters Trophy.

Mr Peel, a master harness maker from Borambola, NSW, will also be honoured with the Australian premiere of Heavy Horses and Harness, a film produced by West Wyalong Movies, screening on Saturday evening.

Festival secretary Fiona Kibble said the event’s growth into a three-day format highlights its strong appeal, attracting thousands of visitors from across Australia and overseas.

“It is an exciting time not only for the committee but also for Barellan and the Narrandera Shire to host such a unique, pioneering event — the only one of its kind in the world where visitors can see horses, camels, bullocks, donkeys, mules and goats all working in harness on-site,” Ms Kibble said.

“Our new format includes engaging experiences for the whole family, where people can see, hear, touch and taste our pioneer heritage. Friday’s program will look quite different from previous years but will still feature our popular grand parade through the main street of Barellan.

“This not-for-profit event is run entirely by volunteers, with funds reinvested back into the community through new infrastructure.”

The Good Old Days Festival is proudly sponsored by Bendigo Bank Narrandera and District.

Have fun at the Berrigan Show

Excitement is building in the Southern Riverina as the Berrigan Show prepares to celebrate its 125th anniversary on Sunday, October 5. This year’s milestone will be made even more memorable with the arrival of the Lexus Melbourne Cup, Australia’s most prestigious horse racing trophy, thanks to the support of the Berrigan & District Race Club.

Valued at an incredible $850,000 in solid gold, the Cup will arrive at the showgrounds around 10.30am before the official opening at 12.30pm. Visitors will have the rare chance to see, touch and even take a photo with the famous trophy, which last toured Berrigan nearly two decades ago. As show secretary Lyndall Horne explains, “For the show and the rest of Berrigan and surrounding communities, it is an amazing opportunity to feel the Cup and take a photo with it. This milestone year will be one to remember.”

In keeping with the Cup’s visit, the program will feature a number of racing-themed attractions. Visitors can enjoy hobby horse races, a spring racing hat parade, off-the-track equestrian classes featuring retired racehorses, and special Melbourne Cup–inspired competitions in cake decorating, floral design, art, needlework and even LEGO. The show will also include a lively Q&A session with VRC representatives, alongside retired steward Des Gleeson.

Of course, the Berrigan Show will still deliver all the country show favourites that have delighted families for generations. Horse events including show jumping, show hunter and open classes will run throughout the day, alongside a full poultry schedule. Traditional rural competitions will be complemented by family-friendly entertainment such as Sideshow Alley, scarecrow displays, the pet parade, Junior Show Goers contests, a Kidz Zone packed with free activities, face painting, jumping castles and the much-loved Hay Ho Animal Nursery.

The official opening at 12.30pm will be led by The Land Sydney Royal AgShows NSW Young Woman, Cassandra Bush, followed by the Melbourne Cup presentation and the spring racing hat parade for ladies, gents and under-18s. With so much happening across the grounds, the Berrigan Show promises a full day of fun, tradition and celebration for visitors of all ages.

Established in 1891, the Berrigan Show is one of the region’s most enduring community events. While some years were missed during wartime and the recent pandemic, 2025 marks the 125th time the show has been staged – a true testament to the strength and spirit of the local community.

Admission to this year’s show is $15 for adults, $5 for children aged 10 to 16 and pensioners (with card), while children under 10 are free when accompanied by an adult. All attendees will also be entered into the lucky gate prize draw, with the winner receiving a premium two-night stay in a riverside cabin at Kismet Riverside Lodge in Howlong.

With its rich history, country traditions, and the glittering highlight of the Lexus Melbourne Cup Tour, the 125th Berrigan Show is set to be one of the most memorable in its long and proud history. For full details, including the program of events, visit www.berriganshow.com/2025

A riverside gem with rich WWII history

Tocumwal is one of the few towns along the Murray River where the main street truly faces the river — giving it a charm and character unlike anywhere else. With no twin town across the Victorian border, Toc stands proudly on its own, offering visitors a unique riverside escape.

Here, it’s all about the Murray River. Whether you’re finding a quiet riverbank to relax, watching the world float by, or diving into adventure, the river is what keeps visitors coming back year after year.

But Tocumwal is more than just natural beauty — it’s a town steeped in history. The character-filled main street, with heritage facades dating back to the 1860s, reflects the town’s enduring spirit. Toc is also home to what was once the largest military aerodrome in the Southern Hemisphere during World War II, a legacy that lives on at the Tocumwal Aviation Museum. Aviation enthusiasts will be thrilled to know it will host the 2025 Tocumwal Air Show on Sunday, September 21.

Tocumwal’s strong connection with aviation continues today. The airfield is a renowned global destination for gliding and regularly hosts aerobatic events. A visit to the National Memorial WAAAF Creek Walk is another moving experience — a peaceful trail lined with interpretive signage honouring the Women’s Auxiliary Australian Air Force, complete with an impressive art installation at the trailhead.

Even the town’s family attractions tie into this history. The foreshore splash park is aviation-themed, making it a truly unique play space you won’t find anywhere else in Australia.

Of course, no visit to Tocumwal is complete without enjoying its famous sandy river beaches.

The foreshore is just one of 25 tranquil beach sites scattered along the Murray, making it a paradise for campers, swimmers, and boaters. It’s also where you’ll find the iconic ‘Big Cod’ — a playful nod to the region’s reputation for world-class fishing.

Tocumwal is also the perfect base to explore the wider region. From exceptional food and wine to water sports, flying adventures, bushwalking, camping, museums, antiques and collectables, there’s something here for everyone.

Whether you come for the river, the history, or the warm community spirit, Tocumwal will have you planning your next visit before you’ve even left.

Explore Finley's history and nature

Finley is a town that blends history, recreation and warm country hospitality — the perfect stop to explore, relax and enjoy.

Finley is a town that blends history, recreation and warm country hospitality — the perfect stop to explore, relax and enjoy.

At the heart of town is the artificially constructed Finley Lake, a sparkling reminder of the region’s fertile irrigated farming district. It’s also a favourite spot for locals, who flock here for fishing, water sports or simply to enjoy the view. Take a leisurely stroll or bike ride around the 1.9km track that circles the lake, then relax with a picnic or barbecue on the landscaped foreshores while the kids burn off energy in the gardens and playgrounds.

For history lovers, Finley is brimming with heritage. Step back in time at the Finley Historical Museum and Log Cabin, where you can explore the McAllister Homestead and the original Myrtle Park School, built in 1896. The nearby Heritage Museum showcases an

impressive collection of machinery and memorabilia, while Finley Station — one of the town’s few remaining pioneer buildings — houses the Pioneer Railway Museum, filled with artefacts and stories from the rail era.

Don’t miss the Foundry Museum, a celebration of the town’s rich manufacturing history and the longstanding role of JT & EN Close in the community. Much of the original machinery and equipment, dating back more than 126 years, is still on display.

If sport is more your style, tee off at the Finley Golf Club, where pristine fairways and peaceful surrounds make for the perfect round, no matter your skill level. Or try your hand at bowls at the Finley Bowling Club or Returned Soldiers Club, where you’ll find not only a game but also a hearty meal, a refreshing drink and plenty of country camaraderie.

And there’s still more to enjoy:

• Seek out the vibrant murals brightening the town, from The Ram at the Tuppal Hotel to The Clydesdales at the Bowling Club, and the striking new mural at the School of Arts Hall.

• Let the kids test their skills at the skate park, and pause to admire the Aboriginal artwork in Rotary Park, including the historic Canoe Tree.

• Share a barbecue under shady trees at Memorial Park, where little ones can explore the playground while the bigger kids enjoy a game of cricket or footy on the lush green oval.

Whether you’re here for a day or a weekend, Finley offers a wonderful mix of history, leisure and country charm — a true gem in the Southern Riverina.
