AS AUTUMN STARTS, WE ARE SPOILT WITH CHOICES FOR THINGS TO DO IN THE CAMPASPE AND MURRAY RIVER REGIONS.

On March 9, I’m frocking up and taking up a ticket in the ‘party paddock’ to watch the race that stops Echuca, the Moama Bowling Club Echuca Cup at the Echuca Racing Club.

The Barham Bowls Club secretary has promised that if I make my way up to cluBarham, the boys will look after me as a spectator at the annual autumn carnival or the Mak Max open triples in April.

Over Easter, I’m setting up camp in my pop-top at the Big Tree Car Park in Moulamein and choosing a yabby for the 30-year tradition of yabby racing at the Moulamein Preschools Easter Fair.

Or you may find my fur-baby taking part in the pet parade and show at the Rushworth Heritage Festival on Easter Weekend.

If we don’t want to leave town, the Port of Echuca will be lighting up the river and the sky with the annual Easter Saturday fireworks, and providing free activities over the school holidays.

Anzac Day is a day to commemorate all the Australian and New Zealanders who were killed in military operations, as well as honour all who have served.

To find a march, dawn or commemoration service to attend and pay your respects, there is a list of Anzac Day events in the Campaspe and Murray River regions on pages 38 and 39.

This year is my 20th wedding anniversary with my beloved.

At this year’s Echuca Moama Wedding and Events Festival, you will find everything in one place needed to celebrate this milestone or hold a new one at the Echuca Racing Club on May 4.

Autumn is my time to take up golf, and with my newfound putting skills and practice, I could be up for 36 holes at the Kyabram Parkland Golf Club Victorian Par 3 Women’s Championship.

Get out and about and be spoilt for choice in the Campaspe and Murray regions this autumn.

Fallen riders honoured

THE ANNUAL ANOINTING OF THE BONESHAKERS EVENT IS REVVING UP FOR ITS SECOND YEAR IN ECHUCA, SET TO TAKE PLACE AT CHRIST CHURCH ON SUNDAY, MARCH 16.

Christ Church Anglican, Echuca’s Reverend Phil Zamagias, who will lead the service, shared the event’s backstory and significance.

“A few years back, local clubs approached the Minister to Tatura, keen to establish something closer to home,” Rev’d Phil said.

“They wanted to honour their fallen mates and keep it focused.”

The event, which originally roared to life in Tatura, was christened by the Northern Victoria Spider riders.

“They coined the term ‘anointing’, so ‘Anointing of the Boneshakers’ became our thing,” Rev’d Phil said.

“We shifted gears to Echuca last year.

“This year marks our second run in town, and we’re sticking to a similar program.

“Bikes, trikes and spider riders of all stripes come together to remember their fallen and receive a blessing for safe travels.”

The event, hosted by Northern Victoria Riders,

extends a warm welcome to all northern Victoria clubs and interested parties.

Last year’s gathering saw about 40 bikes roll in.

The day’s itinerary kicks off with a 10:30am arrival for an 11:30am start at Christ Church, 500 High St, Echuca.

Attendees can look forward to morning tea, live blues/rock/gospel tunes from a local band, and formal proceedings culminating in the blessing of the riders.

“It’s crucial, out of respect for their fallen,” Rev’d Phil said.

“Sadly, they do lose people in their circle.

“These are their riding mates, and everyone’s aware of life’s fragility.

“As a Christian church, we’ve got a message of comfort and hope to offer.”

The event will wind down with lunch at a local pub, providing a chance for fellowship and remembrance.

Murals capture spirit

THE ROCHESTER MURAL FESTIVAL COMMITTEE HAS UNVEILED EXCITING PLANS FOR THE 2025 EVENT, WITH COMMITTEE MEMBER WAYNE PARK ANNOUNCING THE THEME LIFE, LOVE AND MUSIC

“We received 17 applications for the 2025 Rochester Mural Festival from across Australia and New Zealand,” Wayne said.

“There were also inquiries from as far afield as the US, France, and South Africa.”

The selection process was thorough, with artists chosen based on criteria including theme adherence, visual impact, and long-term interest in the mural.

The festival will kick off on Saturday night with a dinner where artists showcase their mini murals.

“All of the finalists were thrilled to be selected,” Wayne said.

“Artists then have from Sunday to Friday to paint, which is only six days this year.

“This will add a bit more pressure, with one day less to paint.”

Rochester currently boasts 54 murals.

The festival will also feature ‘Rochy boards’ for children and adults to compete for prize money in various age categories.

The festival will be held from March 29 to April 5.

Wayne said that all murals, except the winning piece, were available for purchase.

The winning mural becomes an acquisition and is displayed in the mural park.

Tickets for the dinner will be available at Dingwall’s Rochester Newsagency.

The festival has been a significant event for the community since its inception.

Past festivals have attracted visitors from across the region, boosting tourism and showcasing the town’s artistic talent.

The murals have become a permanent feature of Rochester’s streetscape, creating a unique outdoor gallery that tells the story of the town’s history and culture.

PS Hero unearthed

AN HISTORIC PADDLE STEAMER HAS RISEN FROM THE RIVER

In 1874, the PS Hero embarked on her maiden voyage along the Murray River, loyally serving her captains for decades.

Tragedy struck in 1957 when she caught fire, burning to the waterline and sinking at Boundary Bend.

For 40 years, she lay submerged, until Gary and Irene Byford discovered and purchased the wreck in 1989.

The recovery process was arduous.

In 1998, Gary Byford and a team spent six weeks digging silt from the hull.

Using innovative techniques, they slowly raised PS Hero from the riverbed and transported her to Echuca.

Under the skilled hands of Port of Echuca shipwright Kevin Hutchinson and his apprentices, PS Hero’s hull was rebuilt.

In September 2000, 126 years after her initial launch, PS Hero’s restored hull touched water once again.

Today, PS Hero stands as a testament to Australian maritime history, moored proudly in Echuca for all to admire.

While fully restored, PS Hero is not currently operational for river cruises.

However, visitors can explore her deck and marvel at her beautifully restored exterior, gaining insight into the rich history of paddle steamers on the Murray River.

To commemorate the National Trust Heritage Festival ‘Unearthed’, the Echuca Historical Society will showcase PS Hero’s remarkable story through photographs and words at the Echuca Museum.

The exhibition runs from April 18 to May 18 and open daily from 10am to 2pm.

Live music rocks crowd

TOO CROWDED HOUSE, A TRIBUTE BAND CELEBRATING THE MUSIC OF CROWDED HOUSE AND SPLIT ENZ, IS SET TO PERFORM AT CLUBARHAM ON APRIL 26.

The band, renowned for its faithful renditions of chart-topping hits, promises a night of nostalgia and sing-alongs.

Lead guitarist Rob Taylor shared insights into the band’s formation and repertoire.

“Glenn and I were always looking for a tribute band idea to put forward,” Rob said.

“And we both liked Crowded House, and it seemed like they had a lot of hits, a lot of radio hits and it seemed like no-one else was doing it.”

The band’s two-set tribute includes hits from both Crowded House and Split Enz, as well as covers from affiliated groups.

“We do Throw Your Arms Around Me which Crowded House play all the time,” Rob said.

“And as it turns out, Crowded House’s bass player, his name is Nick Seymour, who is the brother of Mark Seymour, who fronts Hunters and Collectors.”

Rob highlighted the universal appeal of Crowded House’s music.

“Crowded House, they do something for everyone,” he said.

“They do rock and they do a lot of slow stuff, a lot of musicality.

Rob’s guilty pleasure song to perform is Crowded House’s Fall At Your Feet

“There is just something that grabs me, but I think the fans, the people who come along to the show, really enjoy Message To My Girl by Split Enz,” he said.

The band, led by Glenn Starr on vocals, performs in the distinctive attire of Split Enz, adding a visual element to their show.

Tickets for the event are available through Club Barham’s website or phone 5451 1800.

ECHUCA MOAMA WEDDING AND EVENTS FESTIVAL HAS EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO BOOK FOR YOUR SPECIAL DAY OR EVENT ON SHOW.

Echuca Moama Wedding and Events Inc. president Shirley Tisher said the festival was an excellent opportunity to meet all vendors for your special event in one place.

The festival provides a relaxing and casual place for everyone to connect with special exhibitors and find everything you need to make your wedding or special event memorable.

“It is nice for brides and grooms to meet with vendors, particularly people like photographers and celebrants, where you interact with them for a long time, and you have to feel comfortable with them,” Shirley said.

“In the past, we have had visitors come through and say ‘Oh, look, we have managed to book everything at the festival, it was just so convenient. There is such a good range of vendors here’.”

Along with general entry tickets, the event will again offer VIP tickets.

Limited to 50 brides and their entourage, VIPs will receive a gift package with extra vouchers, prizes, and access to a VIP-only room with champagne and nibbles.

The 2025 Echuca Moama Wedding and Events has opened up to a broader range of events, not just weddings.

Farnham tribute show rocks

EXPERIENCE THE ULTIMATE TRIBUTE TO JOHN FARNHAM’S LEGENDARY VOICE AT RICH RIVER GOLF CLUB.

Rick Correnza, the powerhouse vocalist leading the Songs Of Farnham tribute show, couldn’t contain his enthusiasm for John Farnham’s musical prowess and innate talent as he geared up for their upcoming gig at the Rich River Golf Club.

“As a vocalist, there’s no greater challenge,” Rick said.

“Farnham’s an absolute marvel in his vocal control, and the fact he’s self-taught is mind-blowing.”

Rick marvelled at Farnham’s genre-defying abilities, from smooth swing to hard-hitting rock.

“Listen to his swing numbers, and you’d swear it was Sinatra or Harry Connick Jr. Then he’ll belt out a rock anthem like Playing to Win without missing a beat,” Rick said.

The frontman stressed the significance of lyrics and melody in Farnham’s repertoire.

“As vocalists, we’re drawn to both,” Rick said. He singled out Help as his top pick.

“The Beatles’ version was great, but Farnham’s take is on another level,” he said.

Rick’s excitement was palpable as he discussed the upcoming show, slated for May 10 at 9pm.

“We’re absolutely stoked to hit Moama and pay tribute to these iconic tunes,” he said.

John Farnham’s career spans over five decades,

with his 1986 album Whispering Jack becoming the highest-selling Australian album of all time. His anthem, You’re the Voice, has become an unofficial national song, and he’s bagged 19 ARIA awards.

Farnham’s influence on Australian music is immeasurable, inspiring generations of artists and earning him the title ‘The Voice’ of Australian music. For further information, visit the Rich River Golf Club website.

Celebrating 50 years of theatrical magic, EMTC is bringing the global musical sensation Mamma Mia! to life this May at the Echuca Paramount.

An unforgettable mix of love, laughter, and ABBA hits pursues.

Dillon Shelley stars as Sophie’s fiancé Sky, while Honni Goulding and Ivy Jensen step into the heels of Donna’s besties and fellow dynamos, Rosie and Tanya.

Rally around vintage engines

READY FOR A VINTAGE ADVENTURE? DISCOVER THE SECRETS OF STEAM AT THE BARHAM RALLY.

The Border Flywheel Club and Heritage Museum is gearing up for its 27th annual Barham Vintage Engine and Machinery Rally on May 17 and 18.

This weekend extravaganza promises a smorgasbord of attractions for machinery buffs and families alike.

Border Flywheel Club vice-president Richard Edwards, a rally veteran since day one, shared his plans for this year’s rally.

“I’ve scaled back on bringing rock crushers and such, but I’ll be tending to the steam engines, making sure they’re well-fed with wood,” Richard said.

The rally will be a treasure trove of vintage machinery, including a 1910 Clayton and Shuttleworth engine and a newly acquired Ruston behemoth from Selleck’s orchard.

“It’s a six-tonne monster, a single-cylinder beast from around 1920,” Richard said.

This year’s theme celebrates English and Australian engines, mainly stationary engines, with Richard saying, “If you’ve got any old-timers who can still work those contraptions, we’d love to have them on board”.

Visitors can marvel at a 25 horsepower Marshall engine in full swing, alongside the Eagle Creek pump steam engine.

The event will also feature radio-controlled model trucks, a working belt-driven hay baler display, and a classic car show and shine to get motors running.

Exhibitors can enjoy free unpowered on-site camping and a Saturday night meal.

The Barham Vintage Engine and Machinery Rally will take over the Border Flywheel Club and Heritage Museum at 9 Jamieson Ave, Barham, running from 9.30am to 5pm on Saturday and 9.30am to 3pm on Sunday.

Geared up for auto fest

THE LOCKINGTON LIONS CLUB IS REVVING UP FOR ITS ANNUAL SWAP MEET AND SHOW ‘N’ SHINE, SET TO TAKE PLACE ON SUNDAY, MAY 18 AT LOCKINGTON PARK ON PANOO RD.

The automotive extravaganza will run from 7am to 1pm, promising a day of excitement for car enthusiasts and families alike.

“We show any sort of vehicle, including cars, motorbikes, trucks, and utes,” Lockington Lions Club secretary and event organiser Marg Dowie said.

“There is no age range on the vehicles, there are no specific categories, so the show ‘n’ shine is open to any type of vehicle.

“There are about six categories that people can enter to win with their vehicles.”

The show ‘n’ shine will feature various judging categories, including best original, best paint job, and motorcycle.

There is an entry fee that includes the driver and a passenger, while spectators can purchase viewing tickets at the gate.

There has been a charge for swap meet sites so Marg encourages early bookings.

“I would encourage anyone wanting a stall at the swap meet to give me a call and let me know you

are coming,” Marg said.

“You can turn up on the day, but I do prefer a bit of notice.”

Food stalls will be a highlight of the event, featuring a doughnut van and a coffee van.

Lockington Lions Club members will be cooking up a “beautiful breakfast” and offering hamburgers and sausages throughout the morning.

Last year’s event attracted 48 vehicles, with the capacity for more.

The Lockington Show ‘n’ Shine is proudly sponsored by Autobarn, Shannon’s, and Campaspe Shire.

“The funds from the event go towards the Lockington Lions Club and their projects and then get distributed throughout the community during the year,” Marg said.

For convenience, both cash and EFTPOS payment options will be available at the entrance.

For more information or to book a site, contact Marg Dowie directly on 0427 795 576.

Get down at Winter Blues

THE WINTER BLUES FESTIVAL IS GEARING UP TO CELEBRATE ITS 25TH EVENT IN 2025.

With dates announced for July 24 to 27, the festival is once again bringing the best blues music from across Australia to Echuca-Moama.

Organisers are looking forward to many more years of showcasing live music in the region.

Touted as one of Australia’s most affordable festival weekends, the festival offers free entry to all venues across its four-day program.

With accommodation and dining options catering to a range of budgets, the festival provides an accessible escape for music lovers — an important distinction in today’s cost-of-living climate.

Beyond the music, the festival generates significant cultural and economic benefits for the region.

Once the quietest weekend of the year for the historic port town, the last weekend of July now sees 20,000 visitors flock to Echuca-Moama.

Local businesses, from hotels to cafés, thrive during the event, highlighting its importance to the community.

The festival is a not-for-profit organisation run by a dedicated volunteer committee.

Established by the community for the community, it relies on support from local businesses and grant funding to keep the tradition alive.

The festival continues to draw attention, recently taking out the Community Impact Award at The Campaspe Murray Business Awards, and the event

became the recipient of the Revive Live grant, which supports sustainability of events across the state.

Echuca Moama Winter Blues Committee chair Laurelin Berrick encourages everyone to join the festivities from July 24 to 27.

“Support this incredible event by coming to town, enjoying the music, grabbing a meal, and soaking up the atmosphere,” Laurelin said.

“It’s all about the blues and the community.”

For the full schedule and more information as it’s announced, visit the Winter Blues Festival website winterblues.com.au/

Ice-cream taste tests reveal favourites

DIVING DEEP INTO THE DEEP FREEZE, WE EXPLORE ECHUCA’S MOST WONDERFUL ICE-CREAM EXPERIENCE: THE PORT ICE CREAMERY.

In the heart of the Port of Echuca heritage district is the The Port Ice Creamery which is just as popular with the locals as it is with visitors.

With over 40 flavours to choose from, here in the What’s On office, we went sampled as many flavours as possible to pick out the favourites.

The top pick was liquorice.

One of the most popular flavours, people travel from many kilometres away, making repeat visits to the Port Ice Creamery for their liquorice icecream fix.

Authentic liquorice flavour not only tastes wonderful, but it’s an ice-cream that may have health benefits, helping with digestive problems, menopausal symptoms and fighting off infections.

Rainbow is the most popular ice-cream at the Port Ice Creamery, especially with the younger ice-cream lovers.

We have a better recommendation: Skittle sorbet, a swirl-together mix of green apple and orange sorbet.

The two flavours together give you the Skittles taste, with the freshness of a fruit sorbet without the jaw-jarring hard outer shell and chewy centre.

For something a bit different, being old and new at the same time, you can’t go past the Anzac biscuit ice-cream.

An Anzac biscuit’s chewiness and golden taste comes through in an ice-cream, with a hint of toasted coconut for a new traditional dessert flavour.

With over 40 flavours, something chocolate must be in the What’s On team pick, and we went

for chocolate sorbet, which is a slightly healthier choice for those in the team who are cutting back on dairy and eggs.

Lastly, our fruit choices have been a bit thin, so we must finish with raspberry and … white chocolate.

A white chocolate ice-cream with a river of smooth raspberry sauce running through it, makes it one of the most popular ice-cream flavours at the Port Ice Creamery.

Keep an eye on The Port Ice Creamery’s Facebook page for up-to-date opening times and any specials coming out of the freezer.

Claws out at yabby races

THE ANNUAL MOULAMEIN YABBY RACES AND EASTER FAIR HAS BEEN DELIGHTING LOCALS AND VISITORS ALIKE FOR OVER THREE DECADES.

The event will kick off at 9am at the Moulamein Heritage Village on Easter Saturday, April 19.

Moulamein Preschool business manager Shantal Sherman shared the event’s rich history and significance.

“It has been held for many years, always on Easter Saturday,” she said.

“Last year, we relocated the event from the main street to the Moulamein Heritage Village.”

The venue change has been a hit with attendees.

“We have got an amazing Heritage Village and it was fantastic for the event,” Shantal said.

“It is great to have room to spread out and encourage more things to be part of the day.”

The Yabby Races and Easter Fair traces its origins back to the 1990s, when a group of children were bored on school holidays, hanging around the main street.

Graham Walker, the butcher on the main street at the time, told the children to go and catch some yabbies, suggesting they race them.

As a result, the first yabby race took place in front of the butcher’s shop.

Graham then got the preschool involved and it became a fundraising event.

The original shop is now called the Old Butcher Shop, a bottle shop, and there is a plaque in the park where the event was previously held to commemorate how it started.

The yabby races are a true community effort, with

the Moulamein Men’s Shed playing a vital role in catching the yabbies.

The event’s proceeds support local initiatives, with all the proceeds of the event going back to the preschool or for community things.

Previous fundraising efforts have included purchasing a defibrillator for the preschool and supporting the community daycare.

The fair boasts a variety of attractions for all ages with market stalls, games and a jumping castle, show bags, snow cones, raffle prizes and all of the Moulamein Heritage Village on display.

The Moulamein Car Club joins in the fun, displaying vintage cars.

“Quite a lot of the town gets involved,” Shantal said.

“The preschool holds a special place to most people in Moulamein because almost everyone’s kids went, or they went, or they have had some involvement over the years.”

Participants can choose their yabby and cheer it on as it scuttles to the finish line.

For those keen to participate in the yabby races, tickets can be purchased on the day per race.

Comedy kicks off

THE MELBOURNE INTERNATIONAL COMEDY FESTIVAL ROADSHOW IS SET TO BRING A BARREL OF LAUGHS TO ECHUCA ON WEDNESDAY, MAY 31 AT THE PARAMOUNT THEATRE.

This comedy extravaganza promises a cracking line-up of performers, including big-name headliners, beloved comedy legends and up-andcoming stars.

Marcel Blanch de Wilt, the tour’s quick-witted MC, couldn’t contain his excitement about the upcoming shows.

“The closing night of a tour leg always has a particular energy as well, so that will be really exciting in Echuca,” he said.

Marcel, who cut his comedy teeth in Adelaide in 2012, has since become a Melbourne-based funnyman with a passion for both treading the boards and working behind-the-scenes.

He stressed the importance of being a skilled MC in the comedy scene.

“Not only is it one of the first ways to get paid in Australian comedy, but it’s also a great way to show people that you have skills beyond your stand-up set,” he said.

Marcel’s comedy style is a blend of sharp wit and observational humour, often drawing on his experiences and interactions with audiences.

He approaches each show with a mix of prepared material and improvisation, adapting to the energy of the crowd.

The Echuca show boasts a ripper line-up, including Matt Stewart, Alexandra Hudson, and Con Coutis, with more performers yet to be announced.

“Con Coutis has a wonderful reputation for creating shows that are outside the box, being a lovable weirdo in the alternative comedy world,” Marcel said.

“Alexandra Houston, I worked with last year in Far North Queensland, and I am very pleased to be touring with her again.

“She was the national winner of Raw Comedy a couple of years back and is an incredible comedian who has done a few roadshows now.

Unique golf event to add to calendar

FIRST STARTED IN 2005, THE 19TH VICTORIAN PAR 3 CHAMPIONSHIPS IS RETURNING TO KYABRAM PARKLAND GOLF CLUB IN MAY AND JUNE.

Golfers will be impressed with by a unique event on the Victorian golfing calendar.

With great excitement, the 2025 event will be featuring the Golf Australia — Victoria Order of Merit events in junior, senior and open divisions.

Players accumulate points over a number of tournaments for the prestigious trophy at the end of the season, claiming the Victorian Golfer of the Year.

In 2024, it was awarded to our Victorian par 3 winner and golfing hero Brett Kellow.

The generous support from sponsors helps the event run smoothly.

The major sponsor, Kyabram Club, will host social meals for both events and Parkland has also been fortunate to receive grants to support the event.

Even though this is a winter event, the field strength is among the best in the state, with past champions and competitors making it to professional status on the tour as well as emerging professionals over the years.

Steph Vogel, Zac Murray and Jasper Stubbs have all tested their short games at Parkland.
