Helping others survive tough times Growing up, Jenny Lagozzino’s father often repeated the adage, ‘You’re only as good as what you give’, and to this day, she and her husband Frank consistently put those words into action at the pub they own and run in Tatura. By ROSA RITCHIE The couple makes charity an integral part of the service at Lagozzino’s Top Pub, from free meals for servicemen on Anzac Day through to annual children’s book donations at a neighbouring school.

its first week (May 23), which helped two community members — one bill paid in full and a second person’s bill partially paid. Before they met, Jenny and Frank both experienced hardship, each in their own way.

“The pub is the hub of the community, everybody comes to the pub at some point,” Jenny said.

“We know what it’s like to start with nothing, and we know what it’s like to be in difficulty,” Jenny said.

“So you need to give back, you can’t always take, take, take.”

“Sometimes people just don’t know who to ask (for help).”

Frank said his family came from Italy with one suitcase and a handful of cash before getting established in Tatura, where they had farmed and owned the pub for more than 50 years. And Jenny worked up to three jobs at a time to pay the bills when she was a single mother. “I know what it’s like to struggle,” she said. “I’ve turned my whole life around.”

Being financially secure, Jenny said she often performed random acts of kindness to share her family’s good fortune. “You wouldn’t believe how many times I’ve gone shopping and paid for someone else’s groceries — I do it nearly every week,” she said. “When you do well, you’ve got to give back.” To get involved in the Help a Local Campaign, visit Facebook.com/ TaturaTopPub or phone 5824 1600.

The hospitable duo regularly raise funds for registered charities, and recently Jenny came up with a creative new way to cut out the middleman and support community members directly. The Top Pub serves between 200 and 500 meals each week and, for the foreseeable future, $1 from each meal sold will be collected to help a member of the public pay an outstanding bill — things like utilities, rent, mortgage repayments, veterinary fees or medical costs. People who are burdened by a bill they can’t afford may nominate themselves, or people can nominate someone they know who is struggling to make ends meet, and Jenny will make a direct repayment herself. “I don’t care what bill it is — if they can’t pay it, we’ll pay it,” she said. Jenny said the amount raised in a week might not cover the total cost of a bill, but it would make a decent dent in any outstanding sum. Nominations are welcome from those in Tatura and surrounding towns; the winner will be drawn at random on Sunday nights and those who aren’t chosen may reapply again the next week. The Lagozzino’s Top Pub Help a Local Campaign raised $343 at the end of

join himself, Emily and the team.

The first is Phil Stammers, a vet of nearly four decades who worked for years and years in the Tatura clinic before it shut earlier this year.

“Most of our clients were existing Mooroopna clients or existing Tatura clients who followed us,” he said.

The second face is vet nurse Lauren Holmes, the third is Dalaney Myers. The final, furrier face is harder to find, but Fred the cat’s face is the most recognisable of the three. The practice has been open since the start of April, and has been steadily building since day one. Dalaney is the practice manager and she said the clinic was developing a family feel, with Phil joined by Lauren and vet Emily Carroll.

“We’ve already got that relationship with a lot of clients. It’s been busy and good. Lots of regular clients coming our way, we’ve been quite busy. “We’re the closest vet to Tat now, it’s only a 10-minute drive. A lot of people don’t like driving across the causeway to Shepparton.” He said the clinic was currently focusing on small animals like cats, dogs, birds and rabbits, but would consider expanding to larger animals as more vets joined.

“You’re not just co-workers, you’re family and as well with the clientele you make them feel like it too, they’re happy to come here and talk not just to get the animal looked at,” she said.

It is a job he loves, with the variety something which kept him excited to come to work each morning.

Counsellor had a big first year For counsellors across the country, last year was a big one. By DANEKA HILL Tatura’s Petra De Kleijn was no exception. Petra opened her business Connect for Healing in March 2020 — days before COVID-19 restrictions fell into place. The office at 6 Francis St instantly became a ghost town, but business was booming. At her peak, Petra was seeing 12 people a day over video connections and phone calls. “They were people from all over Australia, but certainly during the Melbourne lockdown we saw a lot from there,” she said. “It was getting too much; thankfully it is down to eight people a day now.” Despite the intense workload, the 51-year-old Dutch woman is grateful people are taking their mental health more seriously since COVID-19. “They are reaching out and talking about their issues and obstacles in life.

One good conversation can change everything,” she said. Now that restrictions are lifting, customers are finally trickling into the squeaky clean office. “Everything is back to normal in here and people are more than welcome to walk in and meet me,” Petra said. “I’ve wanted to open this office for a long time and I chose this place because it was in the centre of town and good for clients.” In addition to traditional counselling, Petra also offers reconnective healing — a type of spiritual and meditative method. Those most open to reconnective healing tend to be younger, she said. “I often discover clients have lost connection. “They have created habits which distract them from living in the moment and connecting with what the world offers us for free.” Able to speak Dutch, English, German and Indonesian, the well-travelled Petra moved to Tatura to be with her husband, who is from the town.

Counsellor Petra De Kleijn is delighted to welcome clients to her Francis St office after COVID-19 forced her business onto video and phone calls.

New menu will warm your winter If you thought the food at the Tatura Hotel was already tasty, you’re in for a treat as the iconic venue takes its tucker to the next level. By ALEX MITCHELL With new chef Josh Hollands leading the line, hard-working cook Anthony McLeod playing distributor and manager Eva Marie overseeing things, the talented team will be cooking up a storm right through a cold winter and into the future. New options will include a heartwarming mixed grill packed full of flavour, a delicate cheese board for those with slightly fancier tastes, along with everyone’s favourite risotto. An open souvlaki salad oozing with flavour and a line of desserts are also on offer, but if the particularly scrumptious existing menu still appeals, a number of popular favourites — think calamari and flathead — will still be making their presence felt. Eva said the menu was set to launch in the imminent future. “We are in the midst of a new menu, we’ve got it all up and going, we just need to make it all pretty,” she said.

“We’ve got a new mixed grill, there’s a lot of new stuff but we’ve kept all the favourites too because they’re so popular. “We do a lot of daily specials, we have a special place in Melbourne we’re getting our food from now, all from fresh markets. “We get it on the day, so if we get something different, we always have lots of specials.” Eva said the town was enjoying the top-quality cuisine coming out of the kitchen “Everyone’s been loving it.

Tatura Hotel cook Anthony McLeod is part of a small, yet spectacular kitchen.

“A girl the other day told us she can’t normally eat a full meal, but the steak was that beautiful she had to eat the whole thing.” With Josh and Anthony combining with the venue’s wider team to make

Putting the community first Heading up the Tatura Community House, Leeane Button wears countless hats. Sometimes she’s a crisis counsellor. Sometimes a teacher or admin assistant. But always a friend, ready with a cup of coffee and a warm smile to welcome community members into the safe space of the community house. By CHARMAYNE ALLISON For the past five years, Leeane has worked to see the house — and the wider community — go from strength to strength. “What keeps me going is the conversations I have with people about all the community house has done for them,” she said. “Only yesterday, I had a conversation with a couple of ladies who had been in town quite a long time. “They said this was the place they found they were welcomed and supported.” Growing up in Woodend, Leeane was just 12 when her father died. Looking back, she feels that tragic life event helped build her resilience and compassion. “It gave me a strength,” she said. Surrounded by a large extended family and tight-knit group of friends, Leeane learnt early on about the power of community. After finishing Year 12, she spent a short stint in Melbourne before, at 19, running a milk bar in Bendigo with her sister and their partners. Once that was sold, she moved to Nagambie before settling in Mooroopna. “I’ve been in this area now for about 28 years,” she said. In addition to becoming a mother to three children, Leeane worked at Big W for several years before moving to the Mooroopna Hub. “That was my first introduction into community service,” she said. Starting in admin, she was soon co-ordinating training at the centre. Ever the entrepreneur, Leeane also launched her own business on the side, providing IT and vocational training. From there, she joined GV Community Energy as part of a team working on a $1.4 million research project investigating how to help low-income households reduce energy use. Throughout the three years of the project, Leeane was a community partnerships manager before helming the research as project manager. “I got to co-author the final report,” she said. “That was one of my proudest achievements.”

Tatura Community House manager Leeane Button talks with Truc Hunt in their English as a Second Language class.

In 2016, Leeane transitioned to her current role — manager at Tatura Community House. In the years since, she’s guided the community house into a stable financial position and worked to bring diversity to the programs and activities on offer. “I want it to be a place for ideas and thinking and creativity,” she said. “So if someone had an idea, how can we go about making that happen?” Programs include occasional childcare, music and craft groups and fitness sessions, plus a range of adult education options such as English, computer and literacy and numeracy classes. Leeane’s background at GV Community Energy has also seen her work towards a ‘greener’ Tatura. “One of the things we have going now is we’re collecting excess produce from people and we’ve got other people coming in and turning that into relishes and jams,” she said. “Next week we’ll start selling those.” She is also a driver of Zero Carbon Tatura, which aims for zero carbon in town by 2030.

Leeane Button manages the Tatura Community House.

With a passion for social justice, Leeane also wants to see everyone in Tatura housed, clothed and educated. But as the centre promotes education, Leeane believes it’s crucial the community house team continues learning too.

“So looking more at budgets, diversity and inclusivity and management.” While working full-time and studying isn’t always easy, Leeane said her role was nothing but rewarding. Especially as she and her team continue to watch clients grow and thrive.

She and two of her staff are currently undertaking an Advanced Diploma in Community Sector Management through Partners in Training.

“We just want to continue connecting people and reducing social isolation,” Leeane said.

“That enables us to do more of the higher business practices,” she said.

“But if people just want to come in and have a cup of coffee, we’re here for you.”

“We have something for everyone. Leeane and two of her staff are currently undertaking an Advanced Diploma in Community Sector Management through Partners in Training.

A small store with a big heart Tatura FoodWorks store manager Craig Bramley can’t wait to see the water tower in his hometown adorned with the figure of Sir John Monash among a sea of bright red poppies, and that’s why his workplace is throwing its full weight behind Tatura Rotary Club. By ROSA RITCHIE Throughout June, FoodWorks will raise funds for Tatura Rotary, to advance the club’s ability to benefit the community with projects like the water tower mural, which is a collaboration with Tatura RSL. Craig said he believed the mural would become a tourist attraction that provided benefit to the community for years to come, having seen first-hand how impressive public art attracted visitors to country towns. “I’ve been to a lot of murals myself in the area and the amount of people that are visiting those small towns now is incredible.” Craig said he expected more visitors to bring business that would be “good for everyone” — coffee shops, takeaway restaurants, the chemist, the pubs and his grocery store. Although Tatura FoodWorks only opened six months ago, most of its

TATURA PHARMACY

staff have history in the town that goes back much further than that.

“Most of these people I’ve worked with for over 25 years.”

“I’m originally from Tatura, and my family has been in the area for 58 years,” Craig said.

Craig said nobody missed the commute and many loved being able to walk to work.

In the 1980s, he was produce manager at a supermarket in the same location as the store he leads now, and he was pleased life found a way to bring him back to where it all began.

Tatura FoodWorks store owner Tina Reddrop was guided by Craig when choosing a new local organisation to support, and said she wanted the store to be “entrenched in the local community”.

Circumstance took his career to Shepparton for some time; but when an opportunity to work at Tatura FoodWorks became available Craig didn’t hesitate.

“It’s got to be what Craig and his team are passionate about,” Tina said. “The Reddrop group has been around for 40 years, and fundraising is one of the things that is a point of pride for us.”

“I’m seeing people that were my friends at school, it’s good to see their faces and say hello to them. “My generation are coming up as the seniors in the town.”

He said all junior staff were Tatura locals, and many in the senior team followed him back from Shepparton when the store opened close to home.

Craig said Tatura was a keen sporting community, which is why he arranged for the store to support Tatura Football and Netball Club, Tatura Lawn Tennis Club and Tatura Golf Club.

Craig said he would encourage his 48-strong team to ask customers for donations throughout June, to put toward Rotary projects in the community.

“Tatura is a sporting town and that’s why people get behind their clubs,” he said.

“It’s not a big store but we’ve got a big heart.”

“A lot of them used to work with me in Shepparton, and they have moved back to work in Tatura because they live here.

Craig was involved in junior football, swimming, tennis and table tennis in his youth and his family was just as active. He said the women in his family were life members of the netball club, and his 90-year-old mother, Phyllis Bramley, was one of the highest badged members of the Girl Guides for her age. This strong sense of community gave Craig connections to his customers.

“There are about 110 kids on the courts on Friday night which is pretty unique for a standalone competition — we aren’t linked to a club.” Add in another 80 juniors tearing around the footy oval, and you begin to realise just how significant Friday nights at Tatura Park may be in Tatura Football Club’s forthcoming years.

“We have been getting outstanding numbers to our Auskick program, which serves us well in the years to come with those kids flowing into the under-12s,” Tatura Football Club junior co-ordinator Quinton Langlands said. “There’s also a mix of boys and girls, and that is something which has really taken off in recent years. “At this age, in 10 to 12 years these kids could be a part of the senior set-up. “That’s our future; they could be a 100-game player, the next club administrator or treasurer.” Simon agreed their primary objective was to foster that initial interest and give kids a chance to enjoy themselves while learning the game’s fundamentals. “It is always a challenge in Tatura in terms of developing junior players, with secondary school taking them away to Shepparton,” he said. “All we can do is keep providing those opportunities to play and participate — and on Friday nights, participation is the main goal.”

Plan consultation extended

~ Over 40 years experience ~

The draft Tatura Structure Plan consultation period has been extended as Greater Shepparton City Council encourages all stakeholders to share their thoughts on how the town should grow. The plan envisages Tatura as a standout regional community that continues to embrace its rich country town character, while progressively providing more housing that is affordable, diverse and sustainable. Due to local demand, community consultation on the draft Tatura Structure Plan has been extended for an additional two weeks, and will now close on Friday, June 18. The draft Tatura Structure Plan will guide the future development of land to the north, north-east and east of the township, which will progressively occur over the next 30 years to meet the anticipated growth of the town to 6500 residents. The draft plan was initially authorised for exhibition for five weeks between Monday, May 3 and Friday, June 4 at council’s April meeting.

This has since been extended to Friday, June 18 to allow residents additional time to make a submission. Information on the Tatura Structure Plan can be found at council’s website: greatershepparton.com.au/ tatura-structure-plan The three draft background reports and the draft structure plan layout have been made available for the community to view. Council encourages landowners and residents in Tatura to contact council officers with any queries and to make a submission to the plan. Submissions can be made by email to: council@shepparton.vic.gov.au or on council’s website or by mail. For more information, call the Strategic Planning Team on 5832 9700.

The block sizes start at 2000 square metres — plenty of room to build your dream home and outdoor spaces to create true lifestyle living.

The location of the estate is perfect for people looking to settle down and be part of a thriving and supportive community.

Agent Glenn Young from Youngs & Co Real Estate is now selling stage 3a of the multi-stage estate, with blocks starting at $215,000.

From the entrance off Ferguson Rd, it is only a couple of minutes drive, or even a short bike ride, to the heart of Tatura.

“In a rarity for residential blocks this large they come with all services — power, town gas, town sewer, town water and a raw water supply for your lawns and gardens,” Glenn said. “Tatura Waters is set to be one of the Goulburn Valley’s most sought-after residential estates and now is the time to buy.” Glenn said buyers who commit can use the time between now and the

“Tatura really is booming; it is a terrific town where locals support the businesses and everyone supports each other, it is a self-sufficient township and a great community,” Glenn said. “This really is the future for residential development in Tatura. “There’s going to be a stunning wetland, landscaped parks, playgrounds and walking spaces, with plenty of room to grow and enjoy an active lifestyle.”

Tree group has deep roots Just like the climate, it seems things also change when you grow and sell trees. By JOHN LEWIS Tatura’s not-for-profit Goulburn Valley Tree Group manager Nancy Bloodworth said when she became involved in the enterprise 16 years ago, farmers would buy tens of thousands of trees at a time as windbreaks, or as revegetation. “When I first started here, all the bays were full. We used to sell 60,000 trees in a season from September to July,” Nancy said. “Farmers would come in and buy 30 to 40 boxes at a time. But then the drought came, and farmers sold off their water. Now we don’t get near the same numbers of farmers coming in.” Nevertheless, there are still plenty of hobby farmers and backyard planters to keep the group busy and productive. Today, the group still sells tens of thousands of plants a year. Scores of varieties are for sale, including 20 to 25 different varieties of eucalypts and four different banksias, as well as kangaroo paws, melaluecas and hakeas, among a list of other indigenous varieties. Nancy said customers travel from as far as Bendigo and Melbourne to grab a selection of their plants, which are grown from seed and sell for very affordable prices — trees are $1.50 a tube. Retiree Deb Lynch has volunteered at the Kerford St nursery for about two years. She started as a customer buying plants and trees to revegetate her 6.5 ha of land near Undera. “I wanted to get lots of plants in the ground to attract the birds; change

bare paddocks into a bit of a forest,” Deb said. “Everything was so affordable — so you could have a big buy-up.” She said the place had a lovely friendly atmosphere where a group of up to 10 volunteers spend Tuesday and Saturday mornings planting seeds into trays and then pricking them out into seedling tubes. “We’re in our shared area popping the seeds into tubes and we’re chatting away to each other about all sorts of things. I just love working here with the volunteers and customers,” Deb said. The group’s oldest volunteer is Betty Harvey, who at 97 years of age helps out once a week.

GV Tree Group volunteers Ashley Sanders and Deb Lynch enjoying a Tuesday morning with the plants at the Kerford St nursery.

A keen gardener, Betty has been volunteering at the GV Tree Group for 12 years. “It’s a very friendly place, everyone enjoys the company and helping out customers,” Betty said. The GV Tree Group has been operating since 1984 as a cost-efficient way of helping revegetate the Goulburn Valley after decades of land-clearing. Along the way it has also contributed thousands of trees to community projects, such as planting 15,000 trees on the Tatura Sewerage Farm (now part of Goulburn Valley Water). The group also regularly donates to local sporting groups, schools and churches.

At 97, Betty Harvey is GV Tree Group’s oldest volunteer and still enjoys spending time with the people and plants at the Kerford St nursery.

The GV Tree Group is located at 6 Kerford St, Tatura and is open on Tuesday and Saturday mornings from 9.30 am to 11 am.

Festival concert comes to Tatura

The Affinity Quartet will be bringing classical to Tatura with the performance most voted on by the public.

Victory Hall will host the next generation of Australian classical superstars!—!the Affinity Quartet!—!at 3.30!pm on Sunday, June 27, as one of the many events in this year’s Shepparton Festival. Celebrating not only the 25th anniversary of the festival but this year’s theme of ‘Unify’, the quartet will explore its own diversity by responding to the choices and moods of the audience by playing a select playlist voted on by the public before the performance starts. Those participating in the voting can listen, read about and watch pre-recorded excerpts of the playlists via affinityquartet.com.au before

making their choice. Sir Andrew & Lady Fairley Foundation chair Andrew Fairley said the importance of these performances and events like the Shepparton Festival were key to unifying communities. “Arts, culture and liveability are fundamental to building strong and resilient communities,” he said. “The Fairley Foundation seeks to enhance the liveability of

communities in and around Greater Shepparton through its support of diverse cultural opportunities. “It is performances like the Affinity Quartet, who are travelling and performing in Tatura, that bring a breadth of arts experience to smaller towns that would otherwise not be accessible to them.” The Sir Andrew & Lady Fairley Foundation is a long-standing supporter of the Shepparton Festival.

“We have financially assisted a number of performance and art projects throughout the 25-year history of the festival,” Mr Fairley said. “We are proud of the ongoing partnership of this iconic community event which brings dynamic and diverse experiences to our region.” Register for the event at sheppartontickets.com.au/ event/13013 to see Affinity Quartet for free at Victory Hall. This event is going ahead as planned with a watch, see and adapt approach to restrictions.

Trevaskis Engineering, 60 years in Tatura

By MAX STAINKAMPH Gathercole’s meatworks is expanding, looking to add about 100 jobs when construction is completed in coming months.

Fast, efficient, quality and service Industry-leading precision and quality to meet your specifications and deadline every time • ENGINEERING & DESIGN • LASER CUTTING • TURRET PUNCHING

It marks a significant expansion for the plant, adding to the 120odd jobs already on site, and will help the company — which has meatworks in Wangaratta, Tatura and Carrum — expand into the United States.

Cold storage and freezer space for up to 2000 lambs, as well as new amenities and space for a new kill floor, will be inside the new 30-metre-high building. Gathercole’s general manager David Cunningham said the company needed to expand its storage to increase its capacity. “We’ve recently acquired an export licence and our path into the US market with a large company in the

States called Wolverine, which is a supplier of Costco,” he said. “We like the works; we’ve invested a lot of money into the area and for the future of this plant we need to get into the global market. “For us to expand into the States we need to be able to carry more product.” The search for workers will provide extensive opportunities for the town, although David said workers were already in short supply. He said he had 20 roles vacant before construction started. Nonetheless, David said the expansion was exciting for Gathercole’s and Tatura. “Every part of this is exciting for us; from the large investment we make we follow through with a lot of families who rely on this as an income.”

and plenty of open floor space.

Four 1930s wood-framed Chevy doors sit in storage, and deeper in the store an original Halpin bicycle perches in pride of place.

The large area has allowed the couple to open up corners to other shedrummaging enthusiasts.

“Halpins are from Shepparton,” shop owner Dennis Murtagh said. “We’ll buy and sell second-hand, vintage, antique — anything.” Just like Michael Halpin in 1884, Mr Murtagh and his wife Yvonne used to be shopkeepers in Shepparton. Up until last year the pair was kept busy by Solar City Market on Archer St, but when COVID-19 scared away customers and the rent became unrealistic, the Murtaghs made the leap to Tatura. “Shepparton people are waking up to the fact Tatura is a nice place,” Mr Murtagh said. “It’s only 20 minutes away, and how many empty shops are there on the main street? None.” The new shop started life as a car dealership, and so offers high ceilings

One of the corners belongs to a panel beater who likes picking up metalwork and typical ‘man’s shed’ things. Another is a label and sign fanatic. In the vintage world, in-person shopping is becoming king again. “We used to sell 30 to 40 items on eBay but stopped because they were getting too greedy and taking a cut from the sale,” Mr Murtagh said. “It’s hard because antiques have lost 80 per cent of their value. People want cheap new stuff, they want it now, they throw things out after two years, it’s crazy. “It is starting to turn, thank God, with young people getting into the records, cameras and tricycles.” The best thing about the new move is the convenience. The Murtaghs — who’ve been Tatura residents for 20-odd years — can now

walk out their front door and see their new shop. Their own home is predictably ancient and decorated to perfection. “It’s 100 years old at least. It was in

a 1919 picture when it was owned by the saddler Mr Reedy, before serving as a café in the 60s, 70s and 80s,” Mr Murtagh said. Murtagh’s Market sits at the corner of Hogan and Park Sts, Tatura.

Keeping mind and body fit and well It's early at Tatura Park. Dew kisses the grass, the air is raw, but still a throng of ardent locals battle through the cold with a workout designed to get the blood pumping. By LIAM NASH Leading the pack is J-CAT Fitness and Wellbeing owner Josie Catanese, who can’t help but smile looking at what she’s managed to build over the past five years. Her sessions have been the glue which holds it all together for the group, because J-CAT Fitness and Wellbeing places an equal focus on both the mental and physical benefits of training. After all, it’s in the name. “If people have had a bad day, they can have a chat and get some fitness in — it’s a bit of an outing for them,” Josie said. As a community officer with Ambulance Victoria, Josie gets a kick out of seeing Tatura’s denizens banding together by staying active.

A wide age range attends, from 18-year-olds to the over 60s. All are there with a purpose, and Josie oversees the lot while holding a sense of pride knowing she’s doing her part to keep the community together. “Seeing them doing their workout and being happy at the end of it keeps me going, even on the cold mornings. “It doesn’t matter if two or 20 people turn up — I’ll still be here. “To me it’s not about the number or money, I just love seeing the locals stay together. I’m a local girl who loves helping out in the town.” Josie thanked Tatura Football Club for allowing her to store gear in its rooms. J-CAT Fitness and Wellbeing morning sessions run at Tatura Park on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 5.45 am, with evening sessions held Tuesday and Thursday at 5.30 pm.

Everything you need right here If there was a market shortfall where Tatura's home and living retailers are concerned, it's currently being remedied by Hazel Grace Homewares. By LIAM NASH Since March this year, Sharron Kriesfeld, alongside husband John, have stocked a vast range of household items, giftware and even furniture for the township to enjoy at their stylish Hogan St haunt. “We didn't have a dedicated gift store here in Tatura anymore, since they closed just before COVID-19 last year,” Sharron said. "Although we have several shops who have tastefully taken up that shortfall. “I was itching for something creative to do, and I saw there was a need, so my husband and I decided to open the store. “The town is buzzing, and the building boom is brilliant — we believed we needed a homewares shop here, we met that need.

"We feel all of the new and existing shops in Tatura complement each other as a lovely group of shops as a whole and a terrific destination point. “We figured if it's going to meet the needs of the people it needs to be a big store and needs to have lots of different stock,” she said. “I wanted to have furniture, homewares, giftware and loads of other goodies available for the locals and for others who may come to Tatura to look around at our lovely collection of shops on offer.” Seeing the boom in Tatura, and being able to contribute to it as locals, is special for the Kriesfelds. Creating an alternative to the unavoidable Shepparton trip, while offering Tatura a selection of stylish home accessories, are two birds Sharron was eager to kill — the

For the love of cars

Boutique has expanded

By MAX STAINKAMPH

By MONIQUE PRESTON

At age 15, by his own admission, Jody Vincitorio wasn’t loving school. He was “mucking up a bit” and was told by his father to either pull his head in or get a job. “I got on the bus to go to Shepparton one day and went to a bunch of different panel shops, because I knew I loved cars,” he said.

40 panel shops between Tatura and Queensland. “I love the older cars, I do the new stuff as well. I’ve been building and fixing cars since I was 15.” Jody’s wait list for restoring old cars is a staggering 18 months long, and it’s something he absolutely loves.

More than three-and-a-half decades later, he’s still working as a detailer, panel worker and car restorer — the past 12 years as part of his own business JV Paint and Panel.

“A lot of my customers now are 60 years old or so. They had Monaros or Toranas when they were 18 or 20 and they’re semi-retired, the kids have moved out and they’re looking to do it as a hobby.”

Well-known car man Les Adams took him under his wing to give him an apprenticeship, before Jody spent 15 years working in more than

It’s not all work and no play, though. Jody’s pride and joy is the restoration jobs he does, especially on his “golden child” — his own GT Monaro.

Since moving into a new building a year ago, Mes Amours Boutique has been able to expand its range of clothing and handmade items. It has also been able to offer pop-up space to other local handmade or online businesses. The boutique has now been located in the Gatehouse Garden complex in Hogan St for a year after moving from its previous building. Owner Kirsty Richardson said when the business first opened three years ago it was planned for it to be a pop-up shop with a short-term rental. However, the business had great community support and has continued to grow.

Handmade products from 50 Tatura or Goulburn Valley businesses are available in store.

The new store has allowed more brands and products to be sold, with the older children’s clothing range and giftware areas able to be expanded.

There is also a multi-purpose room which can be rented for a meeting space, a bigger pop-up shop, or services that want to base themselves in Tatura once a week.

“We evolved the business based on what the community wanted,” Kirsty said.

Owner Robbie Montgomery started the business six years ago and it has been growing ever since.

“I'm pretty excited to move the business out of home so it will help me switch off and separate the two.”

“I was on my own until I started into the solar systems and then I put on Zavier Ballis as an apprentice, who's now made it all the way through to being fully qualified,” Robbie said.

He said his apprentices were also looking forward to having their own space.

He also has two third-year apprentices on his team, Jonathon Pearson and Floyd Vincitorio. “My previous job had run out of work and I started off with a cheap little van, after 12 months it ended up working out.” R&J Monty's Electrical was run out of Robbie's home in Tatura, which was built nine years ago. June 2021

A MESSAGE TO OUR COMMUNITY

Firstly, we’re fortunate to have the support of the Community Reference Committee (CRC) and Ladies Auxiliary. The CRC recently funded the replacement of flooring in the Hodson House pathology and lifestyle rooms and are looking at options of updating outdoor furniture in the beautiful surrounds enabling residents/patients and their visitors to enjoy the outdoors. The CRC also funded the replacement of artwork that lines the corridors and communal areas of Parkvilla. They are beautiful photos taken by local photographer and CRC member Kaye Watson and have been chosen with the assistance of the residents, Heidi VanDenEnde, Sarah Clarke and Kaye Watson with a theme for each wing. In the near future we will be seeking assistance from the residents and their families on the renaming of the wings, capturing the themes from the photos. The residents have enjoyed a couple of bus outings throughout recent months with a day trip to Nagambie and to Kyabram to have lunch and see the silo artwork. Many activities are being offered to our residents, with staff cooking a beautiful lamb roast for Mother’s Day, Albanian cooking by staff and residents’ families to mention a few. Parkvilla is also awaiting our Aged Care Accreditation which can occur at any time with an announced visit, so we look forward to showcasing Parkvilla and demonstrating meeting the Aged Care Standards. We would also like to acknowledge the Taura Men’s Shed for their ongoing work with rejuvenating the outdoor seating, they look so much better.

cleaning. The window coverings are on order and expect to receive and have these installed soon. At our resident forum in April 2021, feedback was received from a resident that the garden outside her bedroom window required improvement. Since that meeting, we have had the old garden removed, new soil and plants replaced by staff members Sue Walters and Michelle Flanagan who organised a morning to plant these along with a sausage sizzle which some of the residents braved the cooler weather to supervise. There are still more plants to come, a sculpture (made and donated by Wendy Cann), bird house and the mulch to complete this area along with other beds around the back of the facility. We also had the kind assistance of Heidi VanDenEnde and her father Bas. Continual COVID-19 precautions for staff and visitors include QR codes, temperature screening, hand hygiene and masks on entry. We appreciate the support and understanding of the Tatura community in abiding by these precautions, staying away if unwell and a reminder that if a visitor or staff member’s temperature is higher than 37.5 degrees or the person is showing symptoms of acute respiratory infection, visitors or staff members will not be permitted to enter a GV Health facility and will be encouraged to have a COVID-19 test. And hopefully by now, many of you are receiving your COVID-19 immunisation. From all of us here at Tatura Hospital and Parkvilla, we can’t wait to see you all again soon. Stay safe.

The flooring has been replaced in the Palliative room which has been kindly donated by the Ladies Auxiliary.

Kind regards,

It has made a very positive difference visually as well as practically with
