President’s Report

Welcome to the Elmore and District Machinery Field Days!

It is with immense gratitude and pride that I present this year’s President’s Report, celebrating the unwavering community spirit with the invaluable contributions of our committee, event centre staff and the mass of volunteers it takes to make the Elmore Field Days come together year after year.

Firstly, a little bit about myself. I am born and bred locally as a thirdgeneration farmer, a husband to my lovely wife Kari for 25 years and a father to our two children Emily and Lachlan.

At about age 16, I began volunteering for the Elmore Field Days and then became more involved on the committee. A few years later I started roles on the executive committee, and I’ve been on the executive committee ever since. Never did I think I’d have the courage to take on the president’s role, yet here I am.

With many field days across the

exhibitor will give you a form that you need to take to the PPU Office—which is located in the centre of the site near the main office.

Volunteers will then go and pick up your goods for a $2 fee.

These items are then dropped off to your choice of the east or west depots when you can pick up your goods when leaving.

Parenting Centre

Baby feed and change facilities are available in the Parenting Centre at Site 542 next to first aid. Baby change tables are available in toilet blocks near catering sites 7 and 9.

Conditions of entry

For the comfort, safety and enjoyment of all persons the Elmore Field Days (EFD) committee reserves the right to:

• Refuse entry to any persons deemed to be intoxicated and/ or disorderly or likely to cause a breach of the peace.

• Remove persons causing disturbances, breaching the peace or refusing to comply with requests from the EFD.

• Persons entering the site must adhere to Occupational Health & Safety legislation.

• Special care should be taken at all times to protect yourself and others against any loss or injury.

• Persons entering the site may be photographed, filmed or taped and it is deemed that a person by entering the site consents to the EFD or parties appointed by the EFD to broadcast, publish or use any of the photographs, film, recording or images for promotional and other purposes.

• Persons must obey all signs, notices and directions given by the EFD while on site.

• The following restricted/prohibited items are not permitted onsite: flares/fireworks, laser pointers, knives and other dangerous weapons. No BYO.

country closing their doors in recent times, it makes me proud that our past and present committees have been able to keep our organisation moving forward and continuing to grow and support the Elmore and surrounding districts.

Coming into our 62nd year of the Elmore Field Days, it is our volunteers that make it all possible and I thank each and every one of you for you continued support.

As most of you would be aware, the Elmore Field Days is no longer just the only event that we hold at the Elmore Events Centre.

Some of our events include the Elmore Tractor Pull, equestrian events of all disciplines, the Elmore Summer Send Off Ball, Scout jamborees, caravan club rallies, music festivals, product launches and demo days, clay target shooting competitions as well as many other smaller events.

The latest project in development is

the creation of a jet boat race track in conjunction with The Australian Formula Jet Sprint Association, and we plan to hold our first event in late 2026. Keep an eye out for further details.

Once again thanks to everyone who has contributed in any way to support me and the committee to stage this year’s Elmore Field Days, and I hope you enjoy the three days.

Sheep handling made easy

Adam Norrie farms with his wife and parents in the Eugowra-Gooloogong district of NSW, running 5000 first-cross ewes joined with Dorset rams to produce second-cross lambs.

With five sets of yards across two properties, efficiency is key.

Previously, they used a single-action, non-drafting weigh box to estimate lamb weights.

It was slow and cumbersome, so Adam borrowed a Te Pari Racewell HD4 Sheep Handler from a friend.

After trialling it, he bought his own trailer-mounted unit for use across the yards.

The retractable drawbar, removable wheels, and fold-down platform made transport simple.

Within a year, Adam was so impressed, he purchased a second Racewell for one of the main yards.

While primarily used for weighing, it’s also invaluable for market crutching prior to sale.

Integrated Tru-Test scales, adjustable lead-up race, and an automatic anti-backing bar make weighing easy.

Drafting can be automatic or manual, with weight categories set to suit marketing needs.

An EID reader tracks treatments and performance data, helping guide decisions.

The Racewell’s design also streamlines crutching.

Features like the flip-open back gate, drop-down rear flap, adjustable clamps, and 90-degree side tilt allow safe, comfortable handling for both sheep and operator.

Treatments and tagging are quick thanks to unobstructed access.

Reliability and backup service are standout benefits.

“Scott has answered his phone at crazy times to fix my mistakes, and within minutes, we’re back up and running,” Adam said.

Built to last, the Racewell is gentle on animals and reduces farmer strain, with thoughtful design details revealed over time.

“We bought the first one and found we were using it more and more,

so we bought a second to speed up operations,” he said.

“We’re always using the machine — it’s an impressive bit of gear, and when it comes to sheep handling, I couldn’t recommend Te Pari highly enough.”

Ready to transform your sheep handling? Contact Te Pari today on 0800 837 274 or visit tepari.com to see how a Racewell can work for you.

Making the day-to-day easier

This year at Elmore Field Days, the Haeusler’s site is all about technology you can put to work in the paddock.

From practical tools that make the day-to-day easier to innovations that could change the way you farm, there’s plenty to see, try and talk about.

You’ll find our giant touch-screen TV running live John Deere Operations Center and Connected Support demos, showing in real time how machines and data can work together to make life easier.

While you’re there, take a look at Precision Essentials — it’s a straightforward, great-value bundle with everything you need to get started or take the next step in precision ag.

And don’t miss the new JDLink Boost, designed to keep your machines connected via satellite even in areas with little or no mobile coverage.

You’ll also find a line-up of John Deere, Kuhn, Bourgault, Agrowplow and Bednar gear — from mowers to harvesters — showcasing the latest technology and features.

John Deere’s Connected Support will be on show at the Haeusler’s site.

When it comes to larger gear, it’s a good time to talk to the team about what could work for your operation right now.

Getting in early means you’ll be ready to hit the ground running when the season gets under way.

And because keeping you going is just as important as the machines themselves, we’ve made our parts and service area a must-see.

Discover how John Deere Parts OnSite can save precious hours in the paddock by keeping your mostused parts right in your shed.

While you’re there, ask about our netwrap promotion — buy a roll of CoverEdge or XtraNet, and you’ll be in the draw to win a John Deere V451R Baler worth $156,000.

For those picking up a few extras — spend over $100 on toys and merchandise, and you’ll take home a free John Deere gift pack valued at $40.

Plus, visit our careers display for an interactive challenge that might just surprise you, and check out the tractor from the famous Elmore Tractor Pull to top it all off.

CONSIDERING GRAIN STORAGE?

Making hard tasks easier

As prospects improve, thoughts turn to the need to upgrade equipment or plan ahead for future requirements and developments, and the ideal opportunity to check out what is available is the Elmore Field Days.

Eastern Spreaders Pty Ltd will be on site again this year with its range of spreading and feed related equipment.

Managing director Steve Freeman said the great thing about field days was the opportunity it gave people to get the hands-on experience with equipment.

“It’s about getting your product out there, so people can see it and touch it and compare physical sizes of different models and see how the machines are made,” he said.

“These days, most of the research is done online, but there is still a big group of people who really want to see what they are getting before they buy.”

Feeding equipment is one of the main lines of Eastern Spreaders of Kerang, Victoria, with the range of NDE-Co feed mixers and RENN roller mills, grain-baggers and unloaders. Having distributed the range for 25 years, Eastern Spreaders has many customers out there who have come back for multiple machines as the mixers are robust, efficient and have proved to be reliable, backed up with service and spare parts on hand.

“If you are feeding cattle, especially in dairy, you can’t afford downtime,” Steve said.

“If you break down, you need the parts now, not weeks away, so we carry parts for everything we sell.” Keeping stock fed can be an allconsuming task or a straightforward job when simplified with effective equipment.

NDE-co Feedmixers are quick and efficient and come in sizes from 11 cubic metres in single auger

Model 812T Marshall Multispread.

configuration to 40 cubic metres for large dual auger machines. They can be supplied with either front or rear door feed-out or two side doors with folding discharge elevators, available from three foot to nine foot lengths on either the left or right side.

Consistent rations can be mixed and unloaded rapidly, the machines clean out completely and feed can be easily unloaded in the paddock into feeders, over fences, or into troughs or bunkers and in sheds.

Renn Roller Mills have several sizes currently available with 12, 24, 36 and 48-inch wide rollers in portable PTO drive models with a folding 12-foot unloading auger.

Electric motor drive is also available.

The 16-inch diameter rollers are precision-machined and dynamically balanced and suitable for a wide range of grains and legumes.

Eastern Spreaders have been selling the Marshall Multispread range of spreaders since the 1980s and have watched the industry change with the advent of GPS guidance, cloud-based variable rate mapping, and computer controlled spreading systems.

“Probably 50 per cent of the larger machines we sell now include

weighing systems and variable rate control,” Steve said.

“But you can also still get a simple machine for smaller areas, or to suit older tractors. We still have 2.5 and 4.5-tonne machines, and we go up to 14 and 16-tonne units.”

A multi-purpose machine, the Marshall will handle all types of granular fertilisers and seeds and also bulky materials like lime, gypsum and manures.

As well as Marshall spreaders, they have recently begun distributing the Canadian built D egelman Bio Spreaders, a heavy-duty machine to handle bulky feedlot and dairy manures, compost etc.

The Bio Spreader 14 and 20 models bring heavy duty to the next level. They are built with hardened steel to prevent sagging and deformation over extended use.

The live floor has a 3/4” grade 80 chain with a higher breaking strength, and the innovative vertical beater system delivers rock-steady performance, and uniform spread.

The beater assembly can be easily removed to allow using the unit as a trailer. The live floor gives the option to unload all of its material in as little as 90 seconds.

Eastern Spreaders will be on site 668 again this year.

Meeting the challenges of today’s ag operations

Modern farming is evolving rapidly, and so are the demands on how organic waste is handled.

Efficiency, sustainability, and resource recovery are no longer optional — they’re essential.

That’s where the Vogelsang X-split steps in, a powerful, precisionengineered solid-liquid separation system designed specifically to meet the challenges of today’s agricultural operations.

Built with the toughness and reliability farmers expect from Vogelsang, the X-split offers a smarter, cleaner, and more efficient way to process slurry, manure and other organic by-products. Whether on a dairy farm, piggery, feedlot, or food-processing site, the X-split separates valuable liquid nutrients from dense solids, helping producers reduce storage, lower transport costs, and make better use of recovered materials.

Thanks to its robust screw press technology and user-friendly design, the X-split delivers high-performance separation with minimal operator effort. It ensures optimal dryness in solids for easier handling and composting, while the liquid fraction remains rich

Vogelsang X-split in action.

“What truly sets the X-split apart is its low maintenance requirements, achieved by elimination of contact between the process and the sealing system,” Vogelsang Pty Ltd managing director Dirk Pluijmers said.

“What’s more, the internal screens are manufactured in three interchangeable segments, this combined with the Vogelsang’s Quick Service concept allows users the opportunity to triple the service life of their screens.

“Farmers can depend on it day in and day out, and because it’s built by Vogelsang, you can count on local support, spare parts, and tailored solutions to suit your farm’s unique needs.”

As agriculture faces tighter environmental controls and a growing focus on circular resource use, the X-split helps operations of all sizes move toward a more sustainable, costeffective future.

Vogelsang Pty Ltd is proud to supply and support the X-split across Australia and New Zealand, delivering practical technology with real-world benefits. Ready to separate smarter? Talk to Vogelsang about how the X-split can improve your farm’s waste management and nutrient recovery.

Firbank boarders build strong connections

The Firbank Grammar Boarding House fosters strong academic foundations, extensive wellbeing support, and a genuine connection with the wider community.

These connections help our boarders, particularly those from rural areas, to feel not just supported, but truly at home.

At our boarding school, we focus on creating a second family and encouraging local engagement.

Our regional and rural boarders take part in Firbank’s co-curricular activities including debating, music, clubs and various sports. They’re also encouraged to join sporting clubs and participate in cultural activities throughout Melbourne.

The proximity of the Firbank swimming pool to the boarding house is a huge advantage for students that train for swimming six times a week.

“Living in the boarding house makes it easier for me. I have more time to fulfil my study commitments, and I get more sleep,” Year 7 student Arabella said.

“The boarding house saves healthy meals if I’m training. The standard of training and competition is higher at Firbank, which pushes me to do the best I can.”

Our boarding staff play a pivotal role in nurturing every student

and supporting their learning and wellness, framed around consistent academic care.

“Boarding life combines academic rigour with a strong focus on wellbeing, belonging and many opportunities to thrive beyond the classroom,” deputy principal and head of senior school Ceri Lloyd said. “Ultimately, the strength of Firbank boarding lies in our ability to shape capable, resilient, and socially aware young people.

“The friendships forged, the life skills developed, and the sense of belonging cultivated stay with students for life.”

At Firbank, boarders grow into confident contributors, proudly connected to both their regional backgrounds, the Firbank family, and the world around them.

Big hayshed was a smart investment

Haysheds are valuable infrastructure, and setting your farm up with on-farm storage ahead of harvest is forward-thinking and a proven way to future-proof your business, providing opportunities regardless of how the season plays out.

New hayshed projects are proving popular in 2025 and look to be smart investments.

The 4000-bale shed recently completed by Action — The Big Shed People is a great example of how to maximise capacity and lower the storage cost per bale.

Besides starting with a tried-andtested 64 m x 24 m hayshed kit, the secret to success is a wellplanned project.

While the 64 m x 24 m hayshed kit is a common choice, it typically has a height of 7.5 metres, which allows bales to be stacked eight high. However, for this project, the kit shed design has been tweaked and the height increased to nine metres.

This serves two main purposes. Firstly, increasing the height of the shed is a cost-effective way to increase the capacity of the shed,

The 4000-bale Action Steel hayshed.

compared to either increasing the length or width of the shed.

Secondly, it is a good idea to increase the height of the shed to provide additional clearance when there is a canopy.

This is because a canopy typically decreases the clearance height by about 500 mm.

A cantilevered canopy has many benefits, including being a costeffective way to gain some extra storage space.

For example, the combination of the 24-metre span and 8 m canopy is more cost-effective than a 30 m span hayshed.

This hayshed project also uses the popular eight-metre-wide bay which allows you to stack three big bales across, between the columns.

This is an efficient use of space and provides good airflow between the bales.

The building consultants at Action often recommend upsizing the bay spacing to 8.5 m wide.

While this doesn’t increase the capacity of the shed, it does provide more “wriggle room” to make loading and unloading the shed easier and less stressful.

Finally, it is hard to go wrong with an open-front shed, and that is certainly true for hay shed projects. In fact, the open-front shed configuration is the most effective way to protect your hay from weather damage, while still ensuring

the hay can be easily accessed and there is good airflow around the bales.

Another advantage of the openfront hayshed is it can be easily customised, such as installing sliding doors in the back wall or gable end,

Ultimate Fasteners is

or both, to make it easier to access the hay at the back of the shed.

Northern Hire Group director Chris Feldbauer began his journey into plant and equipment hire when, as a teenager, he worked weekends at Echuca Hire to supplement his meagre apprentice wage.

Many years later, in addition to his floor sanding business

Prosanding Timber & Concrete, Chris began his own specialised hire company — Northern Generator Hire and Maxwell Mobile Signs — stocking generators and VMS boards.

From its inception, NHG has prided itself on its great range of quality plant and equipment for hire and the ability to adapt to surpass the needs and expectations of clients. Ongoing patronage, word-of-mouth recommendations and many fivestar reviews from customers are what Northern Hire Group believes is the measuring stick of success.

NHG aims to develop close, longterm relationships with clients and instil confidence in the NHG brand by providing high-quality, reliable equipment that fulfils customer needs when and where they need it. NHG employs people with bright personalities and a positive can-do attitude who understand

So in early 2015, Chris created Northern Hire Group, and a year later he filled that empty yard and opened the doors of his new business.

In December 2024, he expanded again, opening a Yarrawonga location at 69–75 BenallaYarrawonga Rd with lovely staff there to help everyone who walks through its doors.

local conditions, issues and limitations.

Staff take pride in their work, customer satisfaction and the success of the business.

When Echuca Hire closed its doors in 2014, Chris often drove past the empty yard, keenly aware of the loss of plant and equipment hire options in Echuca.

The ever-increasing range meets the specific needs of many different industries, including access, agriculture, civil construction, commercial trades, council and government departments, earthmoving, event organisers, Indigenous groups and councils, land development, landscape and garden, renewable power supply, residential trades, road and rail infrastructure, sporting clubs and waste management.

Tractor pull event returns

The first Australian modified tractor pull was held at the Elmore Field Days in 1976, and in 2022 the Elmore Events Centre was excited to bring the tractor pull back to where it all began.

The Elmore & District Machinery Field Days committee and Down Under Modified Tractor Pulling Association (Down Under MTPA) have partnered together to present this successful event each year. What is a Tractor Pull?

A modified tractor pulls a weighted sled along a 11m wide 100m long dirt track and as the tractor pulls the sled further the more forward the weight goes on the sled causing the sled to get harder to pull.

When the tractor “pulls” the whole 100m this is called a full pull.

Tractor pulling is known as most powerful motorsport due to some tractors having more than one engine with some of them being over 1000hp.

“We’re gearing up for another major event in 2026, with some exciting activities planned to run alongside it,” Elmore Tractor Pull Committee member Andrew Holmberg said.

“In November this year, the track will undergo a full upgrade, including complete reforming, profiling, and other significant earthworks.

“We’re really looking forward to these improvements and the value they’ll have on our 2026 event.”

The Elmore Tractor Pull will be back on March 14, 2026.

Head to facebook.com/ elmoretractorpull for up-to-date information and purchase tickets closer to the event.

Training with pathways to possibilities

From gardens to beauty salons, Bendigo TAFE is helping students turn passions into professions with hands-on training, industry connections, and real-world results.

Discover pathways that grow with you

Each year, Elmore Field Days draws thousands of visitors from across the state — farmers, families, students and small business owners — all looking to connect with the latest in agricultural innovation and regional opportunity.

Bendigo TAFE’s presence at the event is a natural fit. From showcasing hands-on training in agriculture and horticulture to highlighting career pathways in trades, health and beauty, the institute brings practical learning to life.

Whether you’re nurturing nature or inspiring confidence, there’s a pathway here to help you thrive.

From

science

to soil

After completing a degree in earth sciences, Bryn found himself drawn to the simple joy of gardening. What began as a hobby soon blossomed into a career goal.

“Horticulture is all about life, the beauty of nature, and people living together with the natural world,” Bryn said.

He enrolled in Bendigo TAFE’s Certificate III in Horticulture (AHC30722), part of the Free TAFE program, where supportive teachers made all the difference.

He expressed how good the teachers are and how they have been an important part of making the journey a fun experience.

“They really put an effort into make a connection with the students which really matters,” Byrn said.

Bryn and his classmates showcased their skills at the Challenger Achievable Gardens competition,

part of the 2025 Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show.

His garden design — inspired by Australian Indigenous and Celtic cultures — was brought to life through teamwork, problem-solving, and creativity.

“It’s taken a lot of effort and time, a lot of working with different stakeholders and suppliers, and such a big team effort to make it real with a lot of setbacks.”

With career ambitions firmly planted in horticulture, Bryn is already gaining valuable industry experience, with a particular love for garden design.

Confidence

in full bloom

For 22-year-old Tara, studying beauty therapy at Bendigo TAFE has been both a career move and a personal transformation.

Starting with a Certificate III in Beauty last year, she’s now completing the Diploma of Beauty Therapy (SHB50121).

“I chose Bendigo TAFE because the facilities are amazing, and I

knew people who had done the course and really recommended it,” Tara said.

Initially shy, Tara has developed strong client communication skills alongside hands-on expertise in facials, waxing, and more.

Her training has already led to work in a salon, giving her valuable experience while she studies.

Tara’s long-term goal is to specialise in dermal therapy, but she’s grateful for the chance to start her journey close to home — making beauty education accessible for regional students and providing affordable treatments to the community.

A Regional Anchor with statewide Impact,

Bendigo TAFE’s role in regional Victoria goes beyond training. It’s about creating impact.

So, whether you’re a mechanic looking to train your next apprentice, a school-leaver exploring your options or a parent returning to the workforce, Bendigo TAFE is ready to help you take the next step.

Milk faster and gentler with DeLaval

For farmers looking to get more out of their milking operations, upgrading to DeLaval Flow-Responsive Milking is proving to be rewarding.

The technology can help reduce milking times by up to 10 per cent, while supporting good udder health and animal welfare.

“Historically, using a single vacuum level, the system is a compromise that avoids the risk of overmilking — at the start and end of milking when milk flow is lower — but then has the potential of undermilking, when milk flow is at its peak,” DeLaval dairy development director Carl Oskar Paulrud said.

“Therefore, in a traditional system with a single vacuum level, the speed of milking is limited not by the cow’s genetics or available milk, but by the operation of the milking machine.”

DeLaval’s Flow-Responsive Milking follows the milk curve of each cow and only increases high vacuum at peak milk flow.

This enables the milk to be extracted away from the cluster more efficiently, which decreases overall milking time per cow.

One of the farms that has been upgraded is Willcox Farms.

“Since we’ve installed FlowResponsive milking, we’ve had some really positive changes to our milking,” DeLaval user Jacqui Chadwick said.

“We’re milking 10 per cent faster than what we would with conventional, and have increased our milk flow by eight per cent.”

But the benefits go beyond increased milking speed and flow.

“Our cows are just in way better condition than what we were previously used to,” Jacqui said.

“Our somatic cell count has gone down by eight per cent and our mastitis cases have decreased by 43 per cent.

“I definitely would recommend FlowResponsive Milking to other farmers. It’s unreal, it has changed so much.

“So much improvement on our cows, and milking is just way nicer.”

Steel structures built on reliability

Central Steel Build has been a pioneering presence in Australian agricultural construction for five decades, delivering steel buildings that

Founded in 1975 on principles of reliability, integrity and durability, the company has earned a reputation for structures that last. Every Central project is tailored to its environment, operational needs and long-term goals.

From machinery and fodder storage to dairy facilities, livestock housing and bulk storage, each is designed for smarter, more efficient operation.

Chief executive officer John Wetzler said how demand had shifted dramatically recently.

“In the past decade, we’ve seen farmers look beyond a simple shed,” John said.

“They want infrastructure that addresses ventilation, animal welfare, workflow and compliance.

“The focus is on smarter, more capable buildings that improve daily operations.”

Central’s site-specific engineered structures use 100 per cent

Australian steel and are hot dip galvanised for outstanding corrosion resistance.

Every fabricated steel member is galvanised, including recesses, sharp corners, and hard-to-reach

places, providing a steel structure that is an investment for future generations.

That strength was proven during Cyclone Alfred in 2025, when a Central-built machinery shed for

NSW macadamia grower Tony Flick remained completely undamaged, while others nearby were destroyed.

“It was the one thing left standing, completely undamaged,” Tony said. “It’s a true testament to the quality and craftsmanship.”

The second-generation, familyowned business works closely with clients from planning to installation, ensuring every detail supports functionality, durability and safety.

Clients include Elders, Haeusler’s, Bunnings, RLX, Mitre 10, Bridgestone and Powercor.

With 70 per cent of new projects coming from repeat customers or referrals, Central remains a trusted partner nationwide.

You can find the Central team at Elmore Field Days, site 15, showcasing its range of custom steel building solutions that enhance farming operations now and for the future.

Double the fun and double the speed

Rata Equipment Pty Ltd is a New Zealand-owned family company operating in Australia with a base in Ballarat, Victoria since 2022.

We specialise in manufacturing and wholesaling our Power Claw products right across Australia.

With over 1000 Power Claws sold in Australia, and an avalanche of happy customers wanting to tell their story about their Power Claw experience, not many days go by and someone will willingly be excited to talk.

A Queensland farmer’s experience with the Rata Power Claw has been so positive that he has opted to buy a second unit to double its capabilities.

For Queensland’s Russell Patton, who farms alongside his son, his experience with a Rata Equipment Power Claw has been so impactful to his operations that he decided one claw was not enough.

“Those Power Claws are the most fantastic bit of machinery — they are the farmer’s friend,” Russell said.

“It’s actually fun to be on a machine working with them.”

Russell’s property is a 259 ha block located between Toowoomba and Ipswich which he said was “heavily overgrown and very badly neglected” before he purchased it.

Tasked with clearing this land and making it usable, Russell initially contracted a bulldozer to get rid of some stumps and bigger trees before learning about the Power Claw.

“The buckets are all right for knocking stuff over, but once it’s over there is all the fiddling around to try and pick it up and put it in stacks, whereas the Power Claw just grabs hold of it,” he said.

“For picking up logs or fallen trees or any debris that’s on the ground, and for any sort of clearing that you want to do, they are amazing, and they are strong.”

In addition to being compatible with skid steers, models exist which also

suit tractors and telehandlers to ensure all farmers can find the ideal unit to pair with their machinery. The Power Claw’s clever design means farmers can also find uses and benefits in the field beyond what they were initially purchased for.

Customers are the priority

As a regular exhibitor at the Elmore Field Days, the Michael’s Group is always eager to showcase their range of first-rate machinery to customers new and old.

The award-winning Victorian-based JCB dealership has been coming to Elmore Field Days since the 1980s.

Dealer principal at the Michael’s Group Moama branch, Brad Michael, said Elmore Field Days offers a fantastic opportunity for their team to engage with their customers.

“The opportunity to interact and catch up with all our customers in one place is what keeps us coming back,” Brad said.

“It’s also a good platform for us to educate potential new customers on our range of machines.”

The group has a reputation for prioritising their customers, a reputation that has led them to receive recognition for their exceptional after-sales support.

Brad said he is proud to be part of a group that is known for its highquality service.

“We received an award for being the number one (JCB) dealer in the world for after-sales service and support, and we still hold this today,” he said.

“Our customers are widespread. They are in the grain business, hay, beef, dairy, chicken — it’s all over agriculture.”

The Michael’s Group offers a full range of on-farm and workshop servicing for agricultural and construction equipment.

They also supply an extensive range of machines to the construction sector, including earthmoving equipment, backhoes, excavators and wheeled loaders.

And as specialist JCB dealers, they service all JCB models from mini excavators and skid steers through to large loaders and heavy excavators.

It has more implement mounting versatility than any other tractor in its class, plus the largest, most comfortable cab on the market.

Brad says they will showcase a great range of JCB equipment at this year’s Elmore Field Days, and are particularly eager to exhibit the JCB 8330 Icon tractor.

With a top speed of 70 km/h, plug and play GPS capability and the best powertrain and suspension combination, the Fastrac 8330 tractor is built for a life of hard work, while providing maximum comfort.

“Fastracs have been historically considered primarily as a tow tractor but now with the new Icon series they are now equally as capable, if not more, than any other brand of tractor for traditional paddock work,” Brad said.

The Michael’s Group has dealerships in Donald, Moama, Ballarat and Traralgon.

The benefits weigh up

Efficient, accurate weighing is essential in modern farming, whether you’re handling grain, livestock, or bulk produce.

But traditional weighbridge installations can be slow and disruptive, costing valuable time and money.

That’s why more farmers are turning to the Anmar Scales Modular Weighbridge, a fast, reliable solution built for the demands of today’s agricultural operations.

Each modular unit features a prepoured, reinforced concrete deck modules and pre-installed stainlesssteel load cells with rodentproof cabling.

This design eliminates the need for lengthy on-site construction, meaning your weighbridge can be delivered, installed and operational in a fraction of the time.

The system is available as NMI TradeApproved, ensuring compliance for businesses that sell by weight.

Even when trade approval isn’t required, accurate weighing helps avoid overloading (which can lead to fines and equipment damage) and underloading (which wastes transport capacity).

Maintenance is straightforward thanks to the modular design. Components like load cells and wiring can be accessed and

replaced individually, no need to dismantle the entire structure.

That means less downtime and lower maintenance costs.

Built to handle larger machinery and heavier loads, the Anmar Modular Weighbridge is ready for the realities of modern farming.

It’s also adaptable, easily reconfigured or upgraded as your needs evolve.

And because Anmar Scales is proudly Australian-owned and operated, you’ll have access to local support and servicing when you need it most.

Our experienced technicians are based right here in Victoria and NSW, ensuring fast response times and peace of mind long after installation.

With rapid installation, highaccuracy weighing, easy servicing, and future-ready flexibility, the Anmar Scales Modular Weighbridge is a smart investment for any agricultural business looking to boost efficiency and reduce risk.

Visit site 408 at the Elmore Field Days to see it in action and chat with our team about how the Anmar Scales Modular Weighbridge can benefit your farming business.

Fosterville Health Hub

Located in the Bendigo Bank Pavilion The 2025 Health Hub is a one-stop health checkup for farmers and individuals living in rural Victoria, with exhibitors offering a variety of wellbeing checks and education on key health issues affecting individuals in rural areas.

9th AVENUE

From one man to a team of experts

Like many businesses, Rich River Irrigation Developments began as a small operation driven by the incredible commitment and experience of one person.

From that day in 1980, RRID has grown its team to include professionals in irrigation survey, design, and drafting and irrigation hardware sales, installation and servicing.

Still headed by RRID’s founder, the team provides an extensive range of surveying services — including broadacre, topographical, detail, set out for construction, and works as executed — and can design for surface and spray irrigation systems.

Since expanding to take on a Bauer dealership in 2004, RRID has also been providing clients with the highest quality irrigation equipment including hard hose irrigators, lateral moves and centre pivots.

The team members regularly train at Bauer’s headquarters in Austria, making RRID one of Australia’s most experienced Bauer retailers.

RRID provides clients with the highest quality irrigation equipment including hard hose irrigators, lateral moves and centre pivots.

RRID consults some of Australia’s biggest irrigation and land development projects, but has never lost sight of the small farmers and regional businesses nearby.

The sales and servicing team also have a vast range of experience with pumps and pipelines and can project manage irrigation developments from start to finish.

Rich River Irrigation Developments are proud members of Irrigation Association of Australia, Institution of Surveyors, Spatial Sciences Institute, and Irrigation Surveyors and Designers Group.

From city life to farming

Did you know Victoria is Australia’s largest producer of food and fibre products?

GOTAFE is working hard to ensure agriculture workers are equipped with the appropriate skills as the industry evolves.

At GOTAFE’s William Orr (Shepparton) campus, which acts as a working farm, students are learning all aspects of agriculture.

From cropping to sheep farming, to machinery maintenance and agribusiness, all training aims to support the future workforce to enter the industry with the relevant knowledge and skills.

Certificate III in Agriculture (AHC30122) student Cam Darbyshire shared his reasons for enrolling with GOTAFE.

For Cam, the decision followed a lifestyle change that saw him move from the bustling Melbourne CBD to a hobby farm in Stanhope.

Although he was excited, he felt some feelings of self-doubt as he had limited experience in the agriculture industry.

“It was a bit daunting,” he said.

“I am learning everything from scratch and by making mistakes.”

During his studies, Cam has not only gained a deeper understanding of

agriculture, but also how to use farm machinery and make best use of land.

“It has been challenging — but I have had a lot of support from other students,” he said.

With GOTAFE, you can go anywhere, from cropping and sheep farming to machinery maintenance and agribusiness.

With GOTAFE by your side, YOU’VE GOT THIS.

Reefinator debut will rock at Elmore

An automated rock crushing machine that is having a big impact in transforming land for Victorian growers is set to hit the stage at the Elmore Field Days for the first time.

Developed by Rocks Gone founder and former farmer Tim Pannell, the three-metre wide H4 Reefinator machine has doubled cropping yields, boosted stock carrying capacity and trebled land values across Western and southern Australia.

It comprises a levelling blade, four front row and five rear row hydraulic tines, and a following ribbed drum, all weighing 28-tonne when filled with water and digging up to 600 millimetres deep.

The machine has been on a travelling roadshow in eastern agricultural areas this season and will continue to be introduced to the industry following the field days. Farming groups and growers interested in demonstrations with the machine should get in touch with the company.

The latest H4 Reefinator features integrated automation technology, eliminating the requirement for

Rocks Gone founder and former farmer Tim Pannell and national business development manager Adrian Carr are looking forward to presenting the H4 Reefinator to growers at the upcoming Elmore Field Days for the first time.

operators to perform on-the-go depth adjustments according to changes in land and rock conditions, while also adding other valuable benefits.

The Rocks Gone ‘Depth Master’ auto depth and slip control system, which is suitable for ISOBUS and GPSintegrated tractors, calculates speed over ground and tractor load or wheel slip to adjust machine depth up to 50 times per second, as well as the level of its blade.

Operators set the depth and only make a manual adjustment if desired, thereby better optimising machine and tractor performance and resulting in improved crushing results and operational efficiency.

Rocks Gone national business development manager Adrian Carr said another benefit of the automation technology, in conjunction with GPS guidance systems, was it could produce depth maps of worked areas.

“The maps can show perhaps where you may not have been digging deep enough and rather than doing extra passes over the whole area, you may concentrate on some areas and not on others, and effectively do less passes,” Adrian said.

Stephen Rodger and Tracy Hunt have been using a H4 Reefinator to transform some family land near

St Arnaud in the State’s Goldfields region that previously couldn’t be utilised.

The area features a mix of quartz and shale country, while they have also worked some steep land, where the Reefinator assisted the construction of contour banks plus potential for future cropping.

“You certainly couldn’t get over the quartz and shale area with an airseeder. You couldn’t even drive over sections before,” Stephen said.

“We are working on three passes with the machine — going to a depth of 10–20 centimetres, then to 25 cm, and we do a final roll and use a grader blade to level it.

“In the steep area, we can now get the airseeder across the ground and we can just drop the seed on top and then go over it with a roller.

“Where we sowed some summer crops (in 2023), it was phenomenal. We planted in October and, with the help of a bit of rain, we had some sorghum and summer crops that were eight-foot high.”

The H4 Reefinator will be on display at the Rocks Gone stand at site 1120 at the field days.

For further information on the Reefinator and arranging a demonstration, contact Adrian Carr on 0499 970 177.

Fosterville Gold Mine is set to participate in the 2025 Elmore Field Days.

The event is part of FGM’s broader commitment to community engagement and regional support. At its Elmore Field Days stand, FGM will have a range of interactive and family-friendly displays, along with the always popular gold panning.

FGM’s presence at the field days is part of its ongoing efforts to inform

the public about their operations and foster positive relationships with the local community.

FGM encourages visitors to stop by its stand to learn more about their environmental initiatives, community programs and the recently launched Good Neighbour Guide.

Hub brings healthcare to field days

Rob Rye Poly - We’re back!

After a few name changes we’re back to where it all started focusing on the supply, fabrication and on-site poly welding. From our warehouse with pipe and fittings or our workshop with fabrication capability up to 1200mm the Rob Rye Poly team is ready to support you with all your poly needs!

After a successful first year, the Health Hub is back with its own dedicated pavilion.

The new Health Hub will bring a range of free health care services, from skincare to mental health, for attendees to use during the Elmore Field Days.

“We targeted a few health initiatives and health providers who would be well regarded by the rural community,” Elmore Field Days executive manager Derek Shotton said.

“We thought parts of our rural community were lacking exposure to some of the health services, so we made an effort to try and sort out a few that could help us with that.”

He said the feedback on the debut hub was good, however, the lack of its own pavilion was an issue.

“It was received quite well, and it was part of our general interest area last year, and we couldn’t sort of grow it any more in that existing pavilion,” Derek said.

“A new sponsor meant that we could actually put it in its own designated pavilion this year and reach out to more health providers and health support teams.”

He said anyone with an ache or a pain of their own, or a concern for someone they know, could get access to the service during the three days.

“We’ve tried to get a bit of everything,” Derek said.

“There’s everything from hearing checks to cancer checks to cancer support.

“They’re all focused on what, we think, might be the key areas of need for our local rural community.”

One of the most popular health stands last year was the skin cancer clinic. The Royal Flying Doctor Service is coming back in 2025 as part of the Health Hub.
Free health checks will be available again this year.

As well as shearing and wool handling demonstrations, there will be unique opportunities such as a woven optics session twice a day and an animal health update daily.

“The woven optics presentations will be a demonstration of handheld technology that allow wool growers

to reliably measure wool micron on farm and in real time,” Nutrien wool account manager Candice Cordy said.

“A member of the Cooper’s animal health team will be giving an update on current and topical issues that they’re seeing from an animal health point of view around the

area, and potential approaches to addressing some of those animal health, challenges and issues, which obviously vary from season to season.

“It’ll be great to get a current update on what they’re seeing around the place and what growers or particular

sheep producers can be looking out for in their own flocks to ensure that they’re maximising their potential going into the spring period.”

This isn’t Nutrien’s first time running the shearing show, having a longstanding relationship with the Elmore Field Days.

Elmore Field Days will
shearing shed this year. Wool handling will give some tips to new and experienced sheep handlers.

“Nutrient are being involved with the shearing shed, and various sheep projects and trials at Elmore for quite some time,” Candice said.

“I really enjoy partnering with Elmore and other local businesses to put on a really good display and to create some interest for people that are attending the field days.”

She said their schedule would suit everyone from those generally interested in sheep and tenured sheep farmers.

“It’ll be really interesting for anybody who’s visiting to come along to,” Candice said.

“It’d be great for children to see shearing first-hand, to get involved in the sights and sounds of the shearing sheds, there’s plenty of action all the time.

“Even your more experienced, sheep producers will get something out of it as well, particularly with that little bit of a focus on the shearing wool handling, it’s always good to see how other people are doing things and pick up a tip or to that you can apply in your own operation.

“With the presentations around the woven optics and from Coopers and the Zoetis (vaccination updates), it’s a really good update on some of these animal health topics that are always good to have a refresher on.”

Nutrien’s Candice Cordy said the demonstrations and info sessions would be great for kids to attend to learn more about sheep.
Nutrien is back to run the shearing shed for another year.
This year, the shearing shed will partner with Shearing for Kids with Cancer.

Shearing for a cause

The Elmore Field Days Shearing Shed is partnering with Shearing for Kids with Cancer for the first time to raise awareness for the fundraiser.

“My husband and I started this event, 11 years ago,” Katrina Ogden said.

“We originally started it when one of the local family members that…lived in, Rushworth and their daughter at the age of three was diagnosed with a wilms’ tumour.

“Her auntie decided to do a good and services auction, so my husband donated a day’s worth of shearing.

“One of the local farmers, Bill Barlow, bought the date, and it has got bigger and bigger every year since then.”

On the day, Katrina and family will shear sheep together, while Australian Wool Innovation industry relations officer Holly Byrne talks fleece.

“My son, my husband and myself will be there, along with a couple of other people, through the day, and we’ll be just shearing some sheep,” Katrina said.

Young attendees say hi during this year’s Shearing for Kids with Cancer Day.

“If anyone has any questions to do with our shearing day, I’ll be happy to talk about that as well.”

She said they got involved with the day by chance, with an attendee to the day reaching out.

“Apparently, someone come out to our shearing day and saw what we’ve done, and asked us to be a part of it (Elmore Field Days),” she said.

“My husband and I, we go to the field days every year, it’s a great family day out.”

For 11 years, they’ve been running the event, with all money going to the My Room charity.

This year, the Shearing for Kids with Cancer Day raised $84,000 and over $100,000 last year.

My Room chief executive officer Margaret Zita had a go at shearing, guided by gun shearer Adam Clarke, at the 2025 Shearing for Kids with Cancer Day.

Beloka Kelpies showing best pups

Working and dogs and pups in training will wow crowds with the Beloka Kelpies demonstrations at the Elmore Field Days.

The kelpie is an Australian dog breed, first appearing in the 1800s, and has since become wildly popular due to their working dog abilities.

“They’re popular because of their ability to push big mobs around and

working through the yards,” owner Paul Macphail said.

“They’ve got good force with the bigger mobs.”

With over 30 years experience of working with and training sheepdogs,

Beloka Kelpies working the sheep at a demonstration earlier in the year.
Beloka Kelpies is back with its working dog demos.

Paul promises the best dogs in his demos at the field days this year.

“They’ll see good quality pups showing off their natural abilities and instincts as well as the fully trained dogs moving a small flock around the pens,” he said.

“We talk about how to train, how to start with a puppy and how to train them right through.”

One of his best dogs, Farmer, has

a bloodline with Beloka Kelpies dating back to the ‘90s, and he will be at the event along with Bubbles, who made an appearance last year and new pup Freckles.

“They’ll be a few main work dogs and a few up-and-coming puppies to show as well,” he said.

“It’s just a great (event), it’s very compact with lots and lots of things to see.”

Community groups keep field days running

Community Catering will keep attendees fed for another year at the Elmore Field Days, along with 32 other food trucks and spots.

The field days catering committee comprises of 15 volunteer groups that come together to food vans, coffee vans and shops during the three-day event.

Profit from the volunteer-run shops get distributed among the groups based on number of volunteer hours, with last year having in between $70,000 and $80,000 distributed.

“It goes straight back into the community,” Catering Committee co-president Amanda Phillips said.

“It began with wives and families of those involved and have evolved from there into what it is today, so it’s probably been going for over 50 years.”

Although it is Amanda’s first year as co-president, she said it’s been going smooth, working alongside her co-president Pip Renshaw.

“It’s gone very smooth, with good support from a good committee,” she said.

“The previous president is still on the committee, so it’s good to have her there.”

Outside of the catering committee, Amanda said the community always got involved both directly and by simply attending.

“The whole community comes and supports the event,” she said.

“Volunteers also run things such as waste management, parking, parcel pick up and more.

“There are about 1321 volunteer hours spread over set up, pack up and the main three days.”

Amanda said the event was a major fundraising opportunity for the local community groups, so it’s great to have support behind it.

“We thank everyone for their support in being able to keep us, our

local community fundraiser, going,” she said.

Each year there are over 230 volunteer shifts, not including the executive committee shifts.

This year, the following organisations are a part of the catering committee:

• Colbinabbin Group/School

• Elmore District Health Auxiliary

• Elmore Fire Brigade Auxiliary

• Elmore Kinder

• Elmore Pool

• Elmore Primary School

• Elmore Progress Association

• Elmore Recreation Reserve

• Elmore Scouts

Crafts and culture with a new look

Seven artists will take charge of the general interest shed in a new way of looking at crafts and culture.

The shed will host seven artists, from leathercraft, to crochet and textiles, all working on their art with a display and stall next to their workstation.

“In the past we’ve had, and I’ve been in charge of, the ag art competition, which has finished now,” Elmore Field Days general interest chair Lorraine Trewick said.

“I am organising it to create a bit more interest for the women coming to the field days.

“At this stage, I’ve got seven different crafts people, all in one section, all together.”

Craftspeople include leathercraft, Aboriginal artists, a basket weaver, a lacemaker, a card maker and more.

“I’ve got Sonya Else, she’s just amazing,” she said.

“She’s very well known, and will be there and showing her works.

“I want it to be an active area where the artists can be showing the people how they do things.”

will

As the organiser of the new section, Lorraine is hopeful it will all work out, but her effort in preparation will put her in good stead.

“This is the first time we’ve ever done this, I’m hoping it all works,” she said.

“I’ve been putting a lot of time in to sort it all out, but the idea is to have it all in the one area where

people can just go and wander along and backwards and forwards past it.

“I hope that the public will enjoy what they’re doing.”

Fun for kids hosted by Bunnings

Epsom Bendigo Bunnings will host a whole bunch of kids’ fun at the field days.

“We’ll do some face painting and glitter tattoos, and kids’ crafts, and have some trestle tables set up so kids can come and sit down and do a little bit of sand art and different things like that,” Epsom Bendigo Bunnings complex manager Reece Crane said.

Reece said whether it’s a Saturday snag or a big agricultural event, Bunnings got into the community whenever they could.

“It’s amazing to be a part of this sort of event and see many happy faces on the kids who come through and to get out and be a part of the community.

“It’s just a part of who we are and what we do, and it’s just great to see smiles on people’s faces.” He said being at events is enjoyable for team members and attendees.

“From a team member point of view, it’s very heartwarming, and it makes

you very proud to be a part of Bunnings,” Reece said.

“From a parent and child point of view, they love being able to get out and do things whether it’s at the DIY’s on the weekends or the different events that we hold, whether it’s at the store or outside the store.

“There’s a real sense of excitement that comes out of the kids, and even if it’s just something as simple as getting a stamp on the way out … it’s great to be able to offer these things. We’re very excited.”

As well as the kids area, Bunnings will have a shop set up.

Take off with Bendigo Flying Club

If you’ve wanted to fly above the rest, literally, Bendigo Flying Club is offering a trial session over the field days.

Bendigo Flying Club’s Tim Pryse said the club was a flying school, rather than a charter operator, but they were excited to give budding pilots a taste of the sky.

“It’s a trial introductory flight for if you are keen to learn to fly,” Tim said.

“It’s in two-seater recreational aviation planes in Tecnam’s that are made in Italy.”

They will also have a static display as well as the one in the air.

The trial flights will last 30 minutes at $150 each, which is a special Elmore Field Days price.

“So be quick and don’t miss out,” Tim said.

“I think there’ll be quite a few farmers’ sons, and maybe even some farmers who want to learn to fly, so it would be a good opportunity to get out there.”

There will be a sign-up on the day. Tim said to head straight there if you’re interested, to save yourself the disappointment.

The club owns four two-seater planes and one four-seater plane, with two full-time instructors and five part-time.

Bendigo Flying Club was founded in 1965 and now has around 250 members.

The club owns two hangers and a fantastic, renovated clubroom complex with great views of the Bendigo Airport.

The club purchased its first aircraft in 1969 and has since purchased a training fleet of five Tecnams and a Piper Archer.

It has been involved in flying training since 2007 and many of its members are General Aviation and Recreational Aviation pilots.

A recent graduate included 17-yearold Logan, who had wanted his licence since he was 14, and ended up a pilot before a driver.

For more information about the club, visit www.bendigoflyingclub.com.au

Dig in to find ‘dino’ bones

Digging up the past will keep busy hands occupied, with Austral Archaeology’s kid archaeology area.

“Besides talking to everybody who wants to come up and have a chat with us, we will have a mini dig trailer set up on one of our mechanical sieves,” Austral Archaeology services manager Adam Hansford said.

“It’s basically a 6 x 4 trailer with a mesh screen on top, we put a few hay bales around it, so the kids can get up there and lay in some plastic dinosaur bones and figurines, stuff they can find.”

They’ll be returning for another year, having had a successful event last year.

“It was a hit,” Adam said.

“It was a great break for the parents that brought the kids, because the kids would stay around the trailer and the parents could have a well-deserved rest.”

For those more interested in viewing than tactile play, they will have some replicated artefacts on display.

“We’ll definitely have some archaeologists there in person, including, our principal archaeologist, Amanda Hansford,” Adam said.

Outside of entertaining kids at field days, Austral Archaeology ensures history is preserved as well as it can be.

“We want to preserve and find ways to keep culture alive,” he said.

“If somebody wants to put in a new water pipeline around the district, and it hits a certain number of triggers, we come in and have a look, and if we do find something there, there’s always a way that we can work around it.

“The whole misconception of your land’s going to get taken or something like that, doesn’t happen.

“We work with the landholder, we work with the local Aboriginal groups to basically find a way that keeps both parties happy, while trying to also preserve the heritage that’s there.”

Saddle up, camel rides return

Who needs horse rides when you could get on the back of the desert dwelling, humpbacked camel.

Peter Hodge Camels, owned and operated by Peter Hodge, is bringing several camels to the Elmore Field Days.

“We do short camel walks, about five minutes, I’ve got a loading platform so the camels don’t have to get up and down,” he said.

He won’t be bringing just any camels, his fleet is led by a 25-year-old camel, Roman, followed by a cast of hardworking camels.

“I’ve had Roman for 19 years, he came out of the desert and the second camel will be called Handsome. He was born at my place,” Mr Hodge said.

“Then Buddy and Sid, they’re 12-year-old camels, I got them when they were about six months old and Pretty boy, he’s 23 years old, I’ve had him since he was about five years old.”

Peter Hodge Camel Hire’s Amy Woods, from Shepparton, and Peter Hodge, from Cosgrove, led the camel rides at an event earlier this year.

The camel rides have been at the expo for 15 years and have no plans of stopping.

“It’s a really good event, and it’s got a good atmosphere,” he said. With over three decades of camel-handling expertise, Peter has encountered riders from all walks of life and developed a deep affection for these gentle giants.

“It’s a pretty good job, and most people are pretty good with the camels,” he said.

“I do get a lot of enjoyment of the people enjoying the camels because they sometimes get a bad name.

“They’re unique, and like dogs, they’re very cheeky.”

Like most things, there are some people who are a bit nervous when it comes to camels, but Peter is an expert in relaxing a tense rider.

“I love when people are scared, and you convince him to stay on, and they say at the end that the ride was good,” he said.

“That is the best part, that they conquer their fear, and they do something out of their comfort zone, so that’s very rewarding.”

Heather Field said by adjusting rainfall inputs, users can explore how their water supply might perform under different climate scenarios, helping them plan for dry seasons or unexpected shortages.

“The calculator now works seamlessly on mobile phones and tablets, making it easier to perform in-field assessments,” Heather said. It complements the existing Summer Water Calculator, which focuses on livestock water needs and dam longevity during hotter months. Climate-resilient designer crops

A breakthrough by Monash University scientists could revolutionise agriculture with designer crops suited to the climate of individual regions.

In a comprehensive review of plant biology research, published in Science, an international team of researchers has redefined previously held theories about how plants sense and respond to temperature and developed a new model for thermosensing plants.

They found that plants sense and respond to temperature through decentralised genetic networks of proteins and biological processes, challenging the long-standing theory that plants, like humans, rely on a single internal ‘thermometer’ to sense temperature.

Lead researcher Professor Sureshkumar Balasubramanian, from Monash School of Biological Sciences, said while efforts to address climate change remain critical, this discovery could transform our approach to addressing critical food insecurity in coming decades, as we grapple with the harmful consequences of climate change.

“Understanding how plants naturally integrate temperature into their

New research will revolutionise the way we think about agriculture.

growth and defence systems opens the door to precision breeding and AI-assisted approaches to enhance crop resilience,” Prof Balasubramanian said.

“Effectively, this means we can grow designer crops that are

tailored to the local climate of a particular region.

“This is critically important to ensuring food security as we see phenomena like floods and drought increasingly impacting agriculture in areas where they were not

previously a regular occurrence.”

The dispersed sensing model opens up multitude of opportunities for making designer crops a reality on Australian farms, providing hope for farmers who grapple with increasing climate extremes.

Co-author Dr Sridevi Sureshkumar, from Monash School of Biological Sciences, said the theoretical designer crops, which are now possible as a result of the research, will be a league above modified crops already in use around the world.

“Now that we have been able to identify exactly which elements within the plants are temperature-responsive, we can genetically manipulate them with greater accuracy,”

Dr Sureshkumar said.

“We can determine the specific combinations of manipulations that can produce bespoke solutions.

“Think of it like personalised medicine but for plants; this will revolutionise the way we think about agriculture moving forward.”

Second life for plastic waste

Researchers from La Trobe University in Bendigo have developed an innovative recycling solution for synthetic bale twine, helping to address the growing problem of agricultural waste.

In a study published in the journal Recycling, the research team analysed the thermal, physical and mechanical properties of various plastic waste materials to determine the optimal temperature to process them using a groundbreaking, costefficient melting machine developed by partner company Ritchie Technology (Rtec).

Bale twine has long posed a recycling challenge due to contamination from soil, animal waste and other residues.

Until now, most twine has ended up in landfill or been burned on farms, contributing to environmental pollution.

Lead researcher Associate Professor Ing Kong said the team had developed a closed-loop recycling system to give second life to plastic farm waste.

“We successfully demonstrated that bale twine can be efficiently melted and reformed into useful, durable products such as garden planters, outdoor furniture and construction

materials like decking or fence posts,” Dr Kong said.

“Not only does this work provide an environmentally friendly solution for reducing agricultural plastic waste, but it highlights opportunities to build a sustainable circular economy in Victoria.

“Beyond its direct environmental impact, it could potentially influence industrial practices by providing scalable, low-cost recycling solutions.”

The Rtec melting machine is compact, affordable and designed for on-farm use, offering a local recycling solution that could help cut plastic waste disposal costs for farmers.

Richie Technology founder and chief executive officer William Richie said the product was a “triple win” for the agricultural sector, the environment and the economy.

“This new technology offers a cost-effective economic and environmental solution to tackle mounting piles of agricultural plastic waste,” Dr Richie said.

“It will give farmers the tools to reduce their ecological footprint, cut their waste disposal costs, while offering the added benefit of potentially selling recycled plastic material back to manufacturers.”

Globally, the agricultural industry uses millions of kilometres of bale twine annually.

The team hopes to scale up its initiative for a broad range of applications that could be adapted for other plastic waste streams like silage wrap or irrigation tubing, which could lead to greater long-term environmental and economic benefits.

Agriculture on WorkSafe’s radar

WorkSafe will target five priority industries over the next 12 months to help deliver ambitious goals for reducing workplace deaths and injuries in Victoria.

The five focus sectors, which includes agriculture and manufacturing, have together accounted for almost 60 per cent of all work-related deaths and accepted workplace injury claims in the past five years.

WorkSafe chief health and safety officer Sam Jenkin said the new approach was part of a plan to achieve significant five-year targets outlined in the WorkSafe Victoria Strategy — including reducing fatalities by 30 per cent and injuries by 20 per cent.

“The safety of workers in workplaces is our highest priority, so it makes sense that we focus resources on the sectors where the greatest harm is happening and the hazards causing it,” Sam said.

“We have carefully identified areas where the rate of injuries or fatalities is highest, relative to the size of the industry, and mapped out a path to enable, motivate, influence and

enforce better performance and compliance.”

WorkSafe will continue to use a range of tools to improve safety across priority areas, including targeted visits and assessment programs, as well as

Sam said this did not mean duty holders in other industries would avoid scrutiny or miss out on invaluable support and advice on what they need to do to meet health and safety obligations.

“Holding employers to account is a key part of our strategy, and WorkSafe won’t hesitate to use every regulatory tool available against employers who fail to protect workers — including potential criminal charges,” he said.

“But a big part of our role is about making sure all duty holders are supported to understand their obligations, and have the information, education and systems to make a difference.”

Christian Whiteman has been with Ambulance Victoria for 23 years and currently working as a clinical support officer, with Kyabram being in his jurisdiction.

He said farm incidents aren’t rare in the region.

“Unfortunately, we see far too many farmers in the area that I work, they’ve had particularly traumatic injuries, so we tend to find that things like heavy machinery incidents, people being crushed or kicked by livestock, falls from ladders and this sort of things, are really common incidents for us,” Mr Whiteman said.

“On top of that, we have a lot of more, regular, smaller non-life threatening injuries and incidents, but certainly those larger, life-threatening, lifechanging stick out in your mind.

“These can sometimes be quite complex things for us because we’ve got an imperative to get to the patient and start treating them as soon as possible, but that can be quite logistically challenging in that

farmers don’t often have incidents in nice, easy to access locations.

“We might need four-wheel drive or specialist equipment just to get us to where the farmer is at the time, getting adequate resources into them can be challenging.”

He said he did not do it alone, quite often needing support from agencies such as SES and CFA, especially in situations involving heavy machinery.

On-farm incidents are particularly heavy, he said, as they are often people’s place of work and residence.

“We tend to find that farm scenes can be quite tragic when they have poor outcomes for patients because the farm isn’t just someone’s workplace, it’s often someone’s place of residence as well,” Mr Whiteman said.

“The family’s there, loved ones are there, so often they’re quite emotional, emotive scenes.

“I’ve been to a number of jobs where people have been heavily entrapped

Clinical support officer Christian Whiteman has provided some simple steps to help you help emergency services.

in combines and bits of machinery, and we’re there for a long time trying to help them and get them extricated and their colleagues, their loved ones, are maybe there witnessing part of that as well and that can be quite traumatic for them.”

His advice for farmers and those who work on farms is to never neglect the little things.

“We don’t often go to farmers where they’re doing something that’s new or unique today, that’s put them into this situation, often there are lots of aspects of that work that’s quite

dangerous, and as we do things routinely or daily, that danger isn’t always as apparent, but it’s always just as dangerous,” he said.

“One of the things for me is just that awareness that just because something is routine doesn’t make it’s not dangerous, and also there’s a lot of times when people are working very long hours, fatigue creeps in, there are time pressures, there’s weather pressures, but bits of machinery can be replaced; people can’t be.”

A trend he has noticed in his time working with farmers, is the stoicism,

but Mr Whiteman said it’s always better to reach out.

“One of the things that we see with farmers quite often is that they neglect the small things when it comes to their own health,” he said.

“If it’s not a life-threatening, or they don’t perceive it to be a lifethreatening problem, sometimes they won’t reach out to the ambulance service to come and help them.

“There are other telehealth services that they can contact if they feel like they need help, but it’s not, in their perception, a life-threatening issue.”

Help ambos help you

To assist emergency services better locate you in a time of need, Mr Whiteman listed out some simple steps.

• Have your farm clearly signposted. Ensure street numbers or farm names are easily seen from the road, especially at night.

• Inform the telephone operator of anything that may make it hard to access the site. For example, if a four-wheel drive is necessary, or if there’s low visibility.

• If someone is available to meet them at the front gate, it will help emergency services locate you.

• Download the EmergencyPlus app. A street address can be vague if you’re located on a large property. The EmergencyPlus app allows the 000 call takers to access the inbuilt GPS on your phone.

He listed the Victorian Virtual Emergency Department and Nurseon-call as first steps if you are unsure whether emergency services are required.

Beef up your springtime meals

Aussie beef is renowned for a reason, so head to your butcher and have a go at a new recipe.

Scotch Fillet with White Bean Puree Tips:

Serves 4

Ingredients:

• 4 Scotch fillet steaks of 200 g each

• 2 cans 400 g cannellini beans, drained and rinsed

• 2 tbsp lemon juice

• 1 small garlic clove, crushed

• 2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil, extra to serve

• 2 tbsp tarragon, chopped, extra to serve

• mixed beans to serve, green beans, broad beans, edamame

Method:

In the bowl of a food processor combine cannellini beans, lemon juice, garlic, half the oil and 2 tbsp water. Process until smooth. Transfer to a bowl, stir in the tarragon. Season. Brush the steak with remaining oil, season. Heat a barbecue or chargrill pan on medium high heat. Cook steak for 3–4 mins each side for medium rare or until cooked to your liking. Transfer to a clean plate. Cover loosely with foil and rest for 5 minutes. Thinly slice.

To serve, divide the bean mixture among plates, top with steak, beans, extra tarragon and drizzle with a little extra virgin olive oil.

Rump, porterhouse or eye fillet would also work in the recipe. Scotch fillet steak can also be known as boneless rib eye. Make sure all steaks are of the same thickness to ensure they cook evenly. Swap out cannellini beans for lentils. Use chives, thyme or parsley instead of tarragon.

Serves 4

Ingredients:

• 400 g rump steak, fat trimmed, thinly sliced

• 3 tbsp neutral oil, divided

• 2 tbsp soy sauce, divided

• ½ tsp sesame oil

• ¼ tsp chilli flakes, optional

• ¼ tsp white or black pepper

• 2 carrots, sliced

• 1 large red capsicum, diced

• 1 head broccoli, cut into small florets

• 100 g baby corn, sliced into rounds

• 3 spring onions, thickly sliced

• ½ cup frozen peas

• 2 cups steamed rice, cooled

• 1 egg, whisked

• toasted sesame seeds, to serve.

Method:

Combine sliced steak and 1 tbsp of the soy sauce in a bowl. In a jug, whisk together sesame oil, chilli flakes, pepper, and remaining 1 tbsp soy sauce — set aside.

Preheat a wok or heavy-based pan over medium-high heat. Drizzle in 1 tbsp oil, and add carrots and capsicum, cook 2 to 3 mins. Add broccoli and baby corn and cook a further 3 to 5 mins until vegies are tender-crisp and broccoli is bright green. Transfer veg to a bowl, wipe pan, and return to heat.

Add 2 tsp oil to the pan. When oil is smoking, add beef strips in a single layer and leave for 30 sec until golden on one side. Flip beef and move to the side of the pan.

Add further 1 tbsp oil to the empty side of the pan. Add rice and spring onions, stir once, and spread into an even layer. Let cook 30 sec, then stir for a minute or two until rice is heated through.

Add peas to the pan, along with the cooked vegies and any liquid, and stir to combine with beef and rice. Pour over the soy/sesame sauce and cook for 1 min.

Push fried rice to the sides of the pan and drizzle remaining 2 tsp oil into the centre. Add beaten egg and allow to cook for 30 sec. Scramble, moving cooked egg to the centre and uncooked egg to the edge, breaking into small pieces as you stir. When the egg is nearly set, toss to incorporate into the fried rice.

Season to taste, if necessary, and transfer to a serving platter. Sprinkle with sesame seeds and serve hot.

Tip:

Have all ingredients ready to go before you start cooking — fried rice is a quick dish.

Leftover chilled rice is perfect for this recipe, however, you can make fresh steamed rice, spread it on a plate or tray, and pop in the fridge to cool quickly.

Fresh vegetables can be replaced with 800 g frozen stir-fry veg. Skip step 2, add frozen veg with peas in step 4, and cook until warmed through.

Beef Sausage Gnocchi Bake

Serves 4

Ingredients:

• 8 thick lean beef sausages

• 500 g fresh pumpkin gnocchi

• 400 g arrabbiata pasta sauce

• 400 g can cherry tomatoes

• 125 g frozen chopped spinach, thawed

• 1 tbsp mixed dried herbs

• 1½ cups grated cheese

• parsley leaves, chopped, baby salad leaves, to serve

Method:

Preheat oven to 180°C (160° fanforced).

Heat a large, lightly oiled, non-stick frying pan over medium-high heat.

Cook sausages for 5–6 minutes or until browned on all sides. Set sausages aside on a plate.

Place gnocchi, pasta sauce, tomatoes, spinach, dried herbs and ½ cup (125 ml) water into a large, lightly oiled oven-proof dish. Season and stir well to combine.

Cook for 10 minutes, remove from oven and stir. Top with sausages and sprinkle over cheese. Cook for a further 15–20 minutes, until gnocchi is cooked through and cheese is golden brown. Sprinkle with parsley and serve with salad leaves.

Tips:

For an alternative to whole sausages either chop the sausages up into 4 cm pieces after cooking or squeeze the filling out of the casings and roll into small meatballs.

Swap spinach for baby spinach or chopped kale; use whatever grated cheese you have in the fridge.

Pour the ½ cup water into the cherry tomato can and swirl around before adding to the oven-proof dish.
