COLLEGE GUIDES GROWTH

From preschool to graduation, St Augustine's P-12 College offers a multitude of programs and pathways that allow students to feel prepared for the next stages of their lives.

Parents of children aged between three and five are encouraged to sign their little ones up for the playgroup as a way to meet friends while learning and developing core skills.

The sessions provide a safe and happy environment for children to learn, play and develop language communication among various other skills.

Playgroup co-ordinator, and current Foundation teacher Peta Bibby said the program also gave upcoming students of St Augustine's an opportunity to build friendships with one another, making a scary transition into school a positive change for young children.

“When they feel comfortable around us, and when they come in with some of their kinder friends, it makes it easier for kids if they are familiar with the environment,” Ms Bibby said.

This week's theme of playgroup, which changes every session, was 'Mud, Dirt, and Rock', where children could have a hands-on and involved experience.

“We had mud painting, little diggers set up in the sand, playdough with rocks, and some gumboot colouring,” Ms Bibby said.

“They were engaged the whole time, and they were really happy and having fun,” she said.

Now, skip 10 years or so, and you will find yourself sitting in front of Michelle Downie and Brad Downie, the senior school co-ordinators in charge of Years 9 to 12.

Mrs Downie takes charge of the wellbeing of the students, while Mr Downie handles the students' learning.

Mrs Downie emphasised the importance of the wellbeing of the students and said that they had implemented programs, such as 'The Resilience Project', to begin the students' day and set them off on the right foot.

'The Resilience Project' is a program that provides evidence-based mental health strategies to build students' resilience and happiness.

“It's a really good program to help with emotional literacy, as well as set the students up with the language they can use when they are not feeling great,”

Mrs Downie said.

“We survey our students every year through the Resilient Youth Survey, and our longitude data is really healthy.

“What we've found is that it's something that the kids value, and the data has shown us that there has been an improvement with the program in place.”

St Augustine's College provides education opportunities that allows students to pursue varied pathways including, VCE, VET and VCE-Vocational Major.

When setting up senior students for the future, Mr Downie said there was no shortage of opportunities.

One recent success story was a student who graduated with a VCE and decided to move into the armed forces after school.

“He wasn't necessarily a high achiever academically, but he was someone who was just a genuine kid who just tried his guts out,” Mr Downie said.

“He came back to visit after graduation, and we were able to ask him to act as a bit of a mentor … he just took the time to sit down and talk with the students.

“It was really lovely to see him,” he said.

Mr Downie said St Augustine's encouraged students to try out subjects or VET courses they are interested in, whether that be hairdressing or engineering.

Opportunities: St Augustine's P-12 College provides unique pathways for each student, catered to each passion or interest.

“Our holistic approach to education provides them with an enormous amount of opportunity to set themselves up for what life looks like after school, depending upon their chosen pathway,” Mr Downie said.

The playgroup runs every Wednesday from 9.15 am to 10.30 am; parents are encouraged to register interest by emailing Peta Bibby.

Visit the St Augustine's College website for more information.

SPORTS TEAMS RUN OF SUCCESSES

St Augustine’s P-12 College is poised for victory on the Victorian stage as sports teams prepare this year to fight to the top of the School Sports Victoria.

The college pays an annual fee to SSV, which allows teams to compete locally and against schools across the state if they are successful in the competition.

Sports co-ordinator Michael Hill said allowing students to rise through the ranks of local, regional, and even state levels was essential for small schools such as St Augustine’s P-12 College.

“It’s a really good opportunity to give students access to local sport, and where they get that chance to go to a higherlevel competition that they’d normally not get to access,” Mr Hill said “A lot of the schools we come up against are often triple or quadruple the size of St Aug’s.

“Other schools will get a bit of a surprise when they realise how talented some of these regional kids are.”

The college has celebrated recent success in 2021 with its tennis and soccer teams,

Talented: St Augustine's P-12 College student Grace Kilpatrick claimed medals at the Loddon Mallee Region Athletics event.

which made it to the state competition, and past student Harry Shortis, who made it to the state level for swimming six years running while attending the college.

“We’re very proud of our sports program, and we hope to see even more success in the future,” Mr Hill said.

DISCOVERING LEARNING TOGETHER

This year, for Education Week, Girgarre Primary School will focus on community engagement by inviting families into its classrooms to participate in various activities throughout the week.

Girgarre Primary School principal Ashleigh Buckland said it was an excellent opportunity to display how meaningful learning experiences can be.

“We encourage students to showcase their learning to their families and to display and discuss their accomplishments with pride,” she said.

“We are a small school with 15 students across two multi-age classrooms from Prep to Year 2 and Year 3 to Year 6.

“We have a welcoming, communityfocused environment, positive engagement with local businesses and a supportive parent community. It's an incredible school.”

Through Education Week, students will also be participating in a range of STEM-based learning activities that are set to bring a lot of fun to the classrooms.

“Our Prep to Year 2 students will participate in 'investigations' for 45 minutes twice over the week,” she said.

“The investigations room is set up with activities aligned to the classroom themes, and this term there is a zoo

theme as students explore animals, their habitats and lifecycles.

“There are areas for construction and literacy and numeracy opportunities embedded in a play-based setting, and they complement our explicitteaching program used for the rest of our lessons.”

Digital technology is another specific area of focus at Girgarre Primary School. Their junior students engage with Scratch Jnr using 1:1 iPad, and their Year 3 to 6 students are involved with coding using EV3 LEGO robots.

“The Prep to Year 2 students also have access to the robots; however, this is done in a peer support learning process with the older students mentoring the younger ones on their basic operations,” Mrs Buckland said.

“We ensure that none of our students miss out on these vital opportunities and experiences with plenty of oneon-one time, three full-time teachers and an education support officer.

“In an educational setting, the team supports students to thrive.”

Girgarre Primary School will hold an open day and parent information session for prospective Prep enrolments for 2025 on Thursday, May 16 at 2.15 pm.

For further information, phone the school on 5854 6275.

ESSENTIAL EDUCATION THRIVES

T

he umbrella term STEM focuses on learning four key areas: science, technology, engineering, and maths.

At St Patrick’s Primary School in Tongala, its teachers focus on delivering fun, engaging and transformative content to their students.

“Our students participate in one hour of STEM learning a week with a specialist teacher,” St Patrick’s Primary School principal Jackie Stockdale said.

“During this program, our students learn to be confident in their ability to design and engineer creative solutions and apply their understanding of mathematics, science, and technology.

“They engage in collaborative teams, develop independent critical thinking, and extend their ICT and digital literacy skills through exposure to various platforms.”

During this year’s Education Week, the school’s students will participate in a multi-age STEM activity program and share lunch as a whole school.

In this program, students will build upon their wealth of knowledge, continuing to grow as lifelong learners.

St Patrick’s Primary School focuses on providing students with the tools to transform their learning and enrich their learning environment.

Students are taught to understand the importance and impact of using digital technologies, while learning about their social and ethical responsibilities

as users to ensure safe and resourceful engagement as digital citizens.

“Our school is fortunate to provide access to an extensive range of STEM learning materials to our students,” Mrs Stockdale said.

“Each student has access to an iPad, allowing interactive engagement through educational apps and online research tools.

“This provides the necessary tools for students to be inquisitive and passionate about their learning.

“We also utilise a diverse range of educational STEM learning toys, including Spero kits and Bee-Bots.

“This equipment helps students investigate the art of coding and programming and develop their communication and teamwork skills.”

With the school’s focus on the importance of STEM learning for future generations during Education Week, Mrs Stockdale said the school was proud to deliver an impactful STEM curriculum, guiding its students to be prepared and an active contributor to society.

VALUES REVISED AND IMPLEMENTED

Respect, Responsibility and Community are the newly revised values for Kyabram P-12 College, forged through consultation and consideration from students, parents and teachers.

The college has recently undergone professional learning to implement a School-wide Positive Behavior Support (SWPBS) framework into the college, an initiative which was started way through last year and has already started to see positive changes to the school’s value system.

Through reviewing the system and surveying parents/carers, students and teachers, the school was able to go from five values to three – Respect, Responsibility, and Community.

These three values were a part of the previous value system, meaning the school does not have to start from scratch; however, assistant principal, William Barnes, said that they wanted to begin “explicitly teaching” the values to the students.

“We don’t want to assume that they know these values,” Mr Barnes said.

“We want to make sure that it’s a part of their daily interactions in the way that they talk in the way that they interact with each other.

“Through the review, we were able to hear from our parent community, our staff, and our students and look at all of the values that possibly would stick to our vision of what we want the school to be moving forward,” he said.

One of the ways that the school will actively implement the value system in everyday life is through the newly minted points system.

The points system encourages students to live by the values of Respect, Responsibility and Community.

When a student actively demonstrates those values, they will receive a digital token that they can trade in for either a physical reward like a sticker or a sensory tool or an experience such as having lunch with their favourite teacher.

When the student receives a certain number of digital tokens, a notification is sent to that student's parent, letting them know that they are living by those values.

Mr Barnes said that he hoped the points system would not only encourage students to live by the school values but also strengthen the parent-teacher relationship.

“Historically, when the school calls home, parents could be thinking, ‘What have they done wrong?’ but we wanted to try and change that angle and make parent/ teacher communication a positive thing.

“Some students have already got up to 35 to 40 positive acknowledgments since the start of the year, and for every 10 increments, they get a value award that is recognised at assembly.

“It’s not just about the values, but also about the positive celebrations and creating a positive space for all students,” he said.

While the points system has been active since the beginning of the year, the points shop, operated by staff, will be introduced in week three of term two for primary students on Wednesdays and secondary students on Fridays.

Mr Barnes hopes that this system will encourage students to think about ways to be good community people, which extends to outside of school hours.

“This is a broader picture – these are the kind of core values that people need to have in the community," Mr Barnes said.

“We want our students to grow into esteemed leaders of the community.”

COLLEGE OPENS DOORS

Kyabram P-12 College is opening its doors to the community during this year’s Education Week, inviting prospective students and parents to peek at their science and technology departments.

From Monday, May 13 to Friday, May 17, Education Week takes over Victorian schools once again, and Kyabram P-12 is no different, with the college going all out to the theme of Spotlight on STEM

The theme encourages schools to platform and showcase how they

bring science, technology, engineering and maths into classrooms across the campus.

Primary Campus principal William Barnes said Education Week allowed parents to observe and highlights the curriculum for teachers and leadership.

“This year, and years gone by, we’ve placed a big emphasis on the inquiry process during education week, and this year it’s all about STEM and the evolution of technology,”

Mr Barnes said

“We’re looking to see how we’ve got to continue to embed STEM within our teaching and learning so that the kids are taking some of those skills, especially engineering and technology, into the workforce if they choose.

“It’s especially important to start introducing those subjects with our primary students as they start to set into their VCE levels.”

Prospective families, or families of current students, are welcome into the school during the day to see what STEM

programs and activities the teachers and students put on.

Mr Barnes said families could expect outdoor learning, science experiments, sports science on display, and numeracy and literacy activities throughout the week.

“It’s more so about showcasing some of the different year levels, from right across P-12 so that parents are getting a good taste of what the curriculum has to offer.”

FAITH IN EDUCATION

S

t Mary's Rushworth staff, students and families of St Mary's Rushworth celebrated Catholic Education Week from May 5 to 10, with enthusiasm, hosting engaging events to showcase their educational offerings.

The week started with a bustling “Come and Try” morning on Monday, inviting prospective students and families to experience the school first-hand in their current F/1/2 learning environments.

Thursday's open day was a highlight, drawing in both new and existing families with interactive displays and activities. The event enriched amazing connection within the community, as families immersed themselves in the school's educational offerings.

Culminating the festivities was a sausage sizzle and cuppa, epitomising the warmth that defines St Mary's Rushworth. Last term saw the inauguration of lunchtime clubs, sparking widespread excitement and participation. Students eagerly embraced several activities, ranging from art, craft, and puzzles to the melodious harmonies of choir rehearsals (3–6).

The creativity extended to jewellery making sessions, fostering fine motor skills and aesthetic appreciation. Meanwhile, the rhythm of dance captivated many across all year levels of the school.

These clubs have risen in popularity and have become highlights of the school week.

Their resounding success underscores St Mary's commitment to nurturing diverse talents and fostering a vibrant, inclusive school community.

Enrolments remain open — if you would like a tour of our school by the principal and Year 6 students, please do not hesitate to contact the school to schedule a time.

IMAGINATIONS UNLEASHED

T

o promote a love of reading and writing, Tongala Primary School is in the middle of its very own Narrative Writing Competition.

With the support of its classroom teachers, every student in the school has spent the last five weeks planning, drafting, editing and finalising their very own narratives.

The illustrations and artwork for the school's books have been created during their weekly art classes, where the students have had the opportunity to bring their writing to life in their own expressive ways.

In celebration of the student's hard work and creativity in creating their narratives, Tongala Primary School principal

Robert Hogan now gets the difficult job of selecting 10 narratives across the school, which will then be sent off for professional publishing.

Other principal awards will also be given for various criteria, including one for 'Best Illustrations'.

“We were hoping to get the students excited about the prospect of having

their very own books published,” literacy co-ordinator Liana Haw said.

“It's given them something extra special to work towards.

“Reading and writing is something we are really trying to hone in on here at TPS, so to be able to offer this as an incentive to the students is something we're excited about.

“Hopefully, the kids are too.”

Tongala PS will provide high quality education in a safe, supportive, and engaging learning community that leads to all students achieving their potential.

ACTIVE LEARNING CELEBRATED

Set in the small township of Merrigum with spacious grounds for the students to run and play, Merrigum Primary School offers an active and stimulating space for all students. We have a vibrant educational partnership between parents, staff and the wider school community.

Our students enjoy helping out organisations and groups in the community by doing a letter drop around town when they have things/events coming up.

Students have structured sessions in music, drama, Auslan and gardening, and we participate in the sporting schools program, trying sports such as tennis, basketball, netball and table tennis.

There are enough laptops and iPads for every student.

During education week the school will be doing some activities based on our theme this term of Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and seeing how STEM is used within these.

We will also be having a focus on literacy and numeracy as the staff are always committed to making sure that all students achieve their best.

With low student-to-teacher ratios, caring and professional staff, Merrigum Primary School strives to provide every child with a range of activities to make the school a happy and safe place to learn.

The school will be having an open day on Wednesday, May 15.

OPEN DAY

Education Week 2024

NEW SCIENCE HUB INTRODUCED

Rushworth P-12 College is taking the Education Week theme of Spotlight on STEM to new heights with the opening of its new state-of-the-art science building.

The new science block is expected to hold agriculture, horticulture, and food technology classes, all of which take an integral place at Rushworth P-12 College.

The building's addition to the college could not come sooner, with the opening scheduled in the next few weeks, and the official handover set for Wednesday, May 24.

Rushworth P-12 College acting principal Peter Bovell said the building had been two years in the making since receiving the $5.57 million funding.

“Our food and agriculture is a massively important part of our entire society, so I think it's important for students to have that understanding, even if they're not entering those areas,” Mr Bovell said.

“The building will provide a really good launching point for connecting those industries for our students.”

The new building joins other infrastructure that is purposeful for science, such as the shipping container on the oval, which is a dedicated outdoor space where students can keep livestock.

One program that started recently and will transfer into the new building is 'Food R.O.C.K.S', a program about food made for students by the students.

Food R.O.C.K.S: The student-led program feeds every student, three times a day, making sure no one goes hungry.

'Food R.O.C.K.S' is an exciting program that provides all Rushworth P-12 students with breakfast, a recess snack, and a twocourse meal at lunchtime.

Led by teacher Steve Rix and introduced officially at the start of this year, the program encourages VCE-Vocational Major students to produce and develop a menu independently.

“Students take part in that program whether or not they're studying a food

subject because it gives them outcomes for work-related skills and personal development skills,” Mr Bovell said.

“It's basically skilling them up for the workplace as the kitchen will teach you communication skills, the teamwork and everything that can be transferable regardless of where they end up in life.”

For more information, visit the Rushworth P-12 College website.

We are a small school offering individual programs from a caring and knowledgeable staff.

Our highly structured classrooms, extensive wellbeing programs and wide range of extracurricular activities support diverse learners of all backgrounds.

Proudly educating on Taungurung country for over 150 years, we respect our heritage as we personalise learning for the present. Contact us today to book a school tour.

Welcome to Education Week 2024, a great way to celebrate our fantastic teacher workforce and our brilliant students across Victoria.

The theme this year is Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) and gives schools a chance to share how they bring STEM to life in the classroom.

Learning STEM subjects from an early age will help better prepare our children for tomorrow's world and give them a head start for the jobs and opportunities of the future.

I know as a parent, that sometimes getting children interested in maths or science can be a challenge.

I'm so grateful for our teachers who have the tough job of keeping up with technology and keeping lessons engaging.

As Education Minister, I'm proud to say we are supporting teachers with STEM by fast-tracking teachers to complete a postgraduate qualification in maths or science and giving tertiary-qualified professionals the opportunity to earn and learn their way to a teaching degree in priority subjects.

Victoria is home to some of the best teachers in the nation and I want to thank all teachers, along with staff, for their extraordinary commitment to education. This week will give teachers some great teaching resources to help keep the lessons vibrant.

We've got a range of virtual programs and online resources available for different schools, year levels and areas.

We've even got an online resource giving students the opportunity to use a real, dedicated radio telescope to probe a region of deep space in search of distant celestial object activity such as stars, supernova and supermassive blackholes. I hope not-for-profits schools across Victoria open their doors and showcase how STEM comes to life in the real world.
