Healthy Lawns, Healthy Streams

Fall is a great time to have your lawn or garden soil tested! A soil test will provide guidance to keep your lawn or garden in tip top shape and looking great! At the same time, you’ll be protecting drinking water supplies and the health of our streams and rivers. Why fall? It’s the time to get soil tests results so you can make recommended fertilizer, lime, or nutrient amendments and be ready for spring. GET A KIT Pick up a soil testing kit at the County Cooperative Extension office located at the Montgomery County Government Center: 755 Roanoke Street, Suite 1G Christiansburg, VA 24073

USING A TESTING KIT Visit www.soiltest.vt.edu. Select the Sampling Instructions, Report Notes, and Fees and Forms links to learn more about taking samples and what information you can expect to receive. COST FOR ANALYSIS It is only $10 for a comprehensive analysis of your soil nutrients and pH, P, K, Ca, Mg, Zn, Mn, Cu, Fe, B, and estimated CEC, plus a fertilizer and lime recommendation.

MORE INFORMATION Kelli Scott, Extension Agent - kescott@vt.edu, 540-382-5790

Save Money, Improve Water Quality! Purple cone flowers are an example of native species that require less fertilizer and pesticides than many non-native flowers. Lawn and garden activities can result in sediment, nutrient, and bacterial contamination of stormwater through soil, pesticide, and fertilizer runoff. These pollutants hurt our streams. Proper landscape management can effectively reduce water use as well as fertilizer and pesticide costs, while improving the health and beauty of your lawn and landscape. This message is part of Montgomery County’s Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System (MS4) permit requirements to provide public education and outreach on relevant stormwater issues. DISC GOLF COURSE Montgomery County Parks & Recreation has a 38-hole Disc Golf course for you to enjoy. This is a very unique course that consists of wooded fairways, with a variety of elevation changes. This course is the 5th largest east of the Mississippi! The course is free to play; all we ask is that you take out what you bring in. If you have any questions, give us a call at 540-382-6975. Before you play The Rules: Throw a disc from tee to target over each hole of the course in the fewest throws. Each throw after the tee shot is addressed as a stroke from the line of the previous throw. Discs thrown over fencing or stuck in a tree at least six feet high are considered a penalty stroke. Par for each 19-hole course is 57. Remember to yield to trail users when crossing paths. Have fun and good luck! The Map: Follow the map (next page) through each 19-hole course - Golden Bear, lower course (blue line) or Black Bear, top course (green line).

Let the Kids Play Scholarship Fund LET THE KIDS PLAY SCHOLARSHIP FUND

The Let the Kids Play Scholarship Fund was created several seasons ago to ensure that all kids have the opportunity to play sports and participate in after school programs. The fund helps offset the registration cost that families endure to make all programming affordable. The fund pays 75 percent of fees to qualified participants. If you would like to make a donation to the scholarship fund, your help is always appreciated and will only be used for kids right here in our Montgomery County service areas. Children now more than ever need a chance to run, be on a team, learn from coaches/instructors and have the opportunity to just go play. The story revolves around a beaten up old milkshake cup and the love between a young girl and her grandmother. Megan’s years’ worth of savings collected in the cup and an anonymous gift she buys with them are a metaphor for this season of love and generosity. The story is written by local author, Nancy Ruth Patterson. There will be time on your own to visit the Roanoke City Market venues. Dinner will be on own your own preceding production at Table 50 featuring contemporary American fare. Registration deadline is Oct. 17
