Recycling:

The City has three full-service drop-off sites for recycling. These are located at Denson Drive Recreation Center, Covington Recreation Center (Carver Avenue) and Westside Wastewater Treatment Plant (Grand National Parkway). There is a fourth drop-off site, Parkway Shopping Center (2nd Avenue), but they are not full-service. They will take magazines, newspapers and cardboard. Yearly Registration Renewal – Although reminders are mailed the first few days of each renewal month, it is still the responsibility of the vehicle owner to make sure the vehicle is registered and fees are paid on time. Vehicle registration can be renewed by mail. Mail the reminder along with a check or money order to the address shown on the reminder car. The owner must sign the card and include their driver’s license number. Tags – Vehicle tags are paid for and issued at the time you register your vehicle or renew your vehicle registration. Automobile Insurance – Motorists are required to carry liability insurance on each motor vehicle. Failure to show proof of coverage at traffic stops could result in a fine of up to $500.

Opelika â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Rich in Heritage with a Vision for the Future

pelika first appears on maps as far back as 1733. The earliest people in Opelika were the Creeks or Muskogee Indians. Early traders called them "Creeks" because of their habit of living along rivers and streams.

Southern plantations to the North. The Montgomery & West Point was soon joined by a rail connection to Columbus, Georgia in 1855, and a connection to Birmingham, Alabama in 1869. Almost overnight, Opelika became a regional hub for commerce.

The first white settlers in the area now known as Opelika arrived in the late 1830s and established a community called Lebanon. After the removal of the native peoples by force in 1836-37, the area became known as "Opelika", taken from a word in the Muskogee language meaning "large swamp". Settlement was sporadic until the late 1840s, when Opelika quickly became a commercial center with the coming of the railroad.

To manage this rapid growth, Opelika was incorporated as a town on February 9, 1854. As a result of Opelika's transportation infrastructure, many warehouses for storing cotton and other goods were built. With the onset of the Civil War these warehouses were converted to Confederate supply depots. In 1864 and 1865, Union raids commanded by Lovell Rousseau and James H Wilson attacked Opelika, tearing up the railroads and destroying all government property, including Opelika's warehouses.

In 1848, the Montgomery & West Point Railroad Company extended a rail line from Montgomery, Alabama to Opelika, and in 1851 completed a connection to West Point, Georgia, thus connecting Opelika with Atlanta, Georgia. This line was the only direct rail route between New Orleans and the Eastern Seaboard, and rapidly became one of the primary trade lines for shipments of raw cotton from

Soon after the end of the war, the Alabama state legislature created a new county out of parts of Macon, Russell, Chambers, and Tallapoosa counties to be named after Confederate general Robert E. Lee. In 1866, citizens of the new "Lee County" voted Opelika as the county seat, despite the fact that Opelika was technically

unincorporated after having its charter revoked for abetting the rebellion against the United States. After Opelika received a new charter in 1870, rapid growth resumed. The town nearly doubled in size between 1870 and 1900. During this time, Opelika began to gain a reputation as a wild, lawless town. Soon after receiving the new charter, city officials attempted to scam outside investors by issuing fake railroad bonds. For this, the town's charter was revoked again in 1872, and the town was administered as a police district by the state legislature for the following year. Opelika's downtown was packed with saloons, and frequent gunfire in the streets led to railroads ordering passengers passing through Opelika to duck beneath the windows to avoid being shot. In 1882, voters dismissed the incumbent city government. Unwilling to give up power, the city council nullified the election until the courts ruled against them. When the state yet again revoked Opelika's charter, the city leaders took up arms against those that opposed them, and the governor was forced to send in the militia to restore order. Opelika remained under unelected military rule for sixteen years until 1899, when Opelika's charter was again restored. In 1900, local investors founded the Opelika Cotton Mill as the first textile plant in the city, employing 125. In 1925 Pepperell Manufacturing Co. (now WestPoint International) constructed a large mill just outside of the Opelika city limits. The period between 1930 and 1970 would turn out to be Opelika's heyday, as industrial growth turned Opelika into a regional economic powerhouse.

the early 1970s, Opelika's industries employed nearly 10,000. Between the late 1970s and 2005, non-agricultural employment in the Auburn-Opelika area grew at a slow but steady pace. By the late 1990s, Opelika sought to increase its industrial employment base by purchasing and developing a 2,200 acre park site, Northeast Opelika Industrial Park. Since 1999, two major distribution centers, four tier 1 automotive suppliers and one manufacturer / distribution center of dietary supplements have located within the park. In 2003, the park was recognized as one of the “South’s Best Automotive Assembly Plant Sites” by Southern Business & Development, an industry trade publication. Opelika has also experienced a boom in retail development. TigerTown, a 130-acre mixed-use development, is Alabama’s largest retail center with more than 1,000,000 sq. ft. of retail space. Located at the intersection of Interstate 85 and Highway 280 (Exit 58), TigerTown is home to more than 70 businesses. Across the interstate from TigerTown is the recently opened Carmike Tiger 13 Cinema which boasts of having the largest screen in the nation. Following major renovations, historic downtown Opelika is enjoying a return to the center of life in Opelika. The shopping and restaurant district has been improved with a turn of the 20th century flair. Opelika is filled with a variety of specialty shops, galleries, antique stores and restaurants. o

Opelika continued to add factories and other industry throughout the middle years of the twentieth century. In the 1950s, Opelika attracted the nation's first and largest magnetic tape manufacturing plant. In 1963, tire manufacturer Uniroyal constructed a massive plant in Opelika, and around the same time Diversified Products revolutionized the physical fitness equipment industry with products produced their Opelika plant. By

Business & Industry Distilling Company Brings Unique Flavor

he John Emerald Distilling Company, located at 706 North Railroad Avenue in Opelika is a family business, owned and operated by Jimmy Sharp and his father John.

The company is named after Jimmy’s grandfather. In fact, all of the products are named after different family members. “We are honoring the spirits of our ancestors in our spirits,” Jimmy said. The distillery will make two rums, whiskey and gin, and a peach liqueur. “The single malt disappeared after prohibition and is still a young category. Our feature product is a single malt whiskey, which we call John’s Alabama Single Malt. It is similar to Scotch in that it’s a single malt that’s all barley, but it’s going to be smoked with pecan and peach wood instead of peat,” Jimmy explained. “Alabama does not have a defined whiskey, so we are putting our two cents worth in and trying to tie down that slot.”

The Sharps try to use all local or Alabama grown products. This includes Chilton County peaches for their peach liqueur, and Alabama cane syrup for their rum. According to Jimmy, locally sourced botanicals provide a balanced flavor with juniper berries, Alabama cucumbers and pecans to deliver a gin with “Southern Heart.” To master the art of making whiskey, Jimmy and John have traveled to distilleries all across the United States and Scotland. “We’ve honed our distilling techniques and we’ve worked out the specific recipes,” Jimmy said. “Now we are ready to start making whiskey.”

John Emerald products will be distributed by the Alcoholic Beverage Control Board in statewide ABC stores. Local bars and restaurants will also offer John Emerald products.

Then they met developer Richard Patton, “We liked what he was doing; we liked the location and the building was perfect,” Jimmy said. “Also, the mayor and city council members were very receptive and business friendly.”

Each auditorium is ADA certified to allow wheelchairs with comfortable access to the theaters. All seats recline and have high backs with plush cushions. “We want our customers to have the most comfortable experience during a movie,” Krannacker said. Each auditorium has its own digital projector controlled by the server room. The digital movies are sent by satellite to the servers where they are distributed to the digital projectors. Digital movies contain bright lights with accurate colors so the movies look identical to the monitors of movie developers. The largest auditorium with 598 seats, Big D Digital, is designed for luxury and comfort. The Big D screen is 3-stories high and has 8-foot state of the art QSC speakers in the front and back for the ultimate surround-sound experience. Cottage Café

Located on Railroad Avenue in downtown Opelika, the Cottage Café has offered tasty chicken salad, soups and desserts for 14 years. After Mary Skinner and Liz McCollum opened the Picket Fence shop, they wanted to offer a place for lunch to bring in customers to the Cottage Walk building. Mary and Liz visited several places to get ideas for a type of restaurant to open with limited space. A cousin in Birmingham took Mary to a tearoom in Trussville where they enjoyed chicken salad with fruit and chocolate biscuits. That sparked the idea for Cottage Cafe with a chicken salad plate served with a croissant and fruit. They make everything fresh. The pimento cheese, egg salad and soups are prepared from scratch. Assorted yummy desserts are from Gourmet Tiger. Although Mary and Liz have sold Picket Fence, they still own Cottage Café, which continues to serve delectable lunches.

Other owners are Mary’s husband Marvin and Liz’s spouse Homer, along with Tim and Betsy Gore and Dennis and Susie Hamlet. The Cottage Café is open Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m.

Jim Bob’s Chicken Fingers Chuck Ferrell and his wife Bonnie have been in the restaurant business since 1976, when they opened Chuck’s Bar-B-Que in Opelika. After finding success in the barbecue business, the Ferrells opened the first Jim Bob’s Chicken Fingers in 1991. They opened the restaurant for their daughter, Ginger, who had an interest in being in the business after she graduated from college. Since then she has sold the restaurant, and Chuck has sold the barbecue business. In 2002 they opened the second Jim Bob’s Chicken Fingers in Tiger Town for their son, Steven. “This was one way to keep them close to home,” says Chuck with a laugh. In about four years, Chuck and Bonnie will turn Jim Bob’s operation entirely over to their son and retire.

Jim Bob’s was the first restaurant to open in the Tiger Town area of Opelika. Four years ago, they added a drive-through, which increased their business. They offer a daily special Monday through Friday for six dollars including tax. Among the specials are fried or grilled chicken finger snack, six boneless wings with ranch and celery, Jim Bob’s Burger, fried or grilled chicken sandwich and country fried steak sandwich. The daily specials include fries and a drink. “We have customers who eat with us three or four times a week,” says Chuck. “We have tried to create a family friendly atmosphere.”

When the second Jim Bob’s opened, it offered the same menu as the first, but over the years the menu has expanded to include catfish, hamburgers and wraps. The wraps are prepared with grilled or fried chicken.

The restaurant offers a special every Saturday for children 12 and under to eat for free. During this time, cartoons are played on the televisions in the restaurants. “We decided on Saturdays for the special since families are out and about on that day,” says Chuck.

Chef Sikes grew up in Opelika and graduated from Opelika High School. Since there weren’t many restaurants in Opelika when Sikes was growing up, the family ate at home. “We didn’t pick up food at the drive-through because there wasn’t a

Jimmy’s While downtown Opelika has seen a boom in restaurants over the past few years, hometown native Chef Jim Sikes was one of the first to establish his restaurant, Jimmy’s Restaurant, in a restored building and has continued to receive awards. Since opening in October 2005, the restaurant’s awards include being listed in the national publication of Opinionated About Dining 2012, as number 16 in its list of the 25 Best American Regional Restaurants in America. The downtown Opelika restaurant has also annually received the Wine Spectator Award of Excellence.

Mrs. Story’s Dairy Bar While Opelika is boasting of new restaurants, one business has remained in a single family for 63 years, serving the same menu as when the doors first opened. Although many restaurants follow food trends and short cut preparation, Mrs. Story’s Dairy Bar has remained constant and has become an Opelika institution. ferent techniques she wrote about. I remember making an omelet, and it was so good. The omelets my mother made were not really omelets. Julia Child’s was really an omelet.” A few years later, Sikes met Julia Child and told her how much he liked her omelet recipe. He met the famous French cook during the mid 70s while living in New York City, working at Saks Fifth Avenue part time and singing. Saks opened a gourmet section with foods from Fauchon in Paris. Julia Child attended the opening of the Fauchon section. “I think I got that job because I knew something about cooking and could read French on a can,” says Sikes.

When owners Dan and Annie Story first opened the dairy bar, it was named Dari-Delight. Dan Story had visited his sister who lived in the western part of the county where he saw a Dari-Delight. The 57 year old came home with a desire to leave the mill and open a franchise in Opelika.

After living in New York four years, Sikes moved back to Opelika to join an insurance firm. “I became tired of insurance after 17 years,” says Sikes. He managed Saugahatchee Country Club for a few years.

“We have a lot of repeat customers,” adds Sikes, “but we rarely

The Storys, who already owned the property on Pepperell Parkway, moved their house to the back of the lot in order for the business to be built near the highway. Signs placed around the small white building advertised “Iced Milk Sold Here” and “Ounce Cup Sugar and Cream - 10 cents.” The foot long chili dogs and fruit milkshakes were 30 cents each, while ice cream cones sold for 5, 10 and 15 cents. Mrs. Story prepared her own chili recipe, which is now a guarded secret.

Sikes had lived in Louisiana, and his wife, Aimee, is from New Orleans with a Creole family background. He felt New Orleans cuisine was popular and added several Creole dishes to the menu and offered southern traditional fried shrimp and catfish.The chef is expanding the menu to include a variety of dishes in addition to Creole and southern cuisine. He has hired a catering manager.

Local banks thought he was foolish and couldn’t make a living selling ice cream and hot dogs. Every loan application was rejected until finally a bank in Auburn took a chance.

Sikes continued his interest in foods and cooking over the years. He talked to several people about the possibility of opening a restaurant in downtown Opelika. “I sent a couple hundred copies of a questionnaire, asking if they would be interested in a restaurant for lunch or bar in downtown Opelika. I got back 175 saying that it would be a good idea.”

Mr. and Mrs. Story greeted customers in white starched, pressed uniforms and paper hats. Friendly service and quality food were always important. Mrs. Story was known for having a tender, generous heart. If anyone were low on cash, she would run a tab.

daughter, Cora Reames, in 1980 with an option to buy. The menu remained essentially the same, with the chili dogs and fruit milkshakes being the most popular. Banana splits and flurries were added to the menu. Reames knew most of the customers. When someone drove up, she would get busy preparing the order. After 25 years, Reames felt it was time to retire. She sold the business to her daughter Rhonda and husband, Bob Booth, who was desiring a career change, in 1997. The Booths updated the equipment and added tables outside. A year after opening, Bob and Rhonda received the Small Business of the Year Award from the Opelika Chamber of Commerce. The Boothes’ son, Blake, is the fifth generation to work in the restaurant and now manages the business.

Dan Story suffered a stroke after only three years in business. During the following three years, his health declined. He died a few days after the final payment on the mortgage. When the business celebrated its tenth anniversary, the contract with Dari-Delight expired. Mrs. Story decided not to renew the franchise, knowing she could do better on her own. The name was changed to “Mrs. Story’s Dairy Bar.”

While large chains continue to dot the landscape, Mrs. Story’s Dairy Bar thrives as a hometown favorite with personal service and handed down recipes becoming a legacy for another generation. o

ne of Opelika’s most popular attractions are the area’s Antique Shops. These charming shops offer many gems of yesterday as well as brand new items. Visit one or all of these businesses and take home your “jewel in the rough”.

Angel’s Antiques

Bill Brewer had always been interested in collecting, and at an early age dove into dumpsters searching for discarded treasures. He was working with a retailer in Montgomery when he met Connie on a trip to San Antonio, Texas. After they married, they moved to Wetumpka. Bill had been involved in several businesses and real estate when the market fell. Since he had problems finding a job, he began having yard sales and rented several booths in antique malls in the Montgomery area. When the old Wal-Mart location in Opelika sold, Bill approached the owner about renting the location for an antique mall. It took about a year to get Angel’s Antiques up and running, opening in August 2002. His father, Leo, who is now 86 years old, became a partner with Bill and Connie and still works at the business. The antique mall is named after Bill and Connie’s daughter, Angel, a special needs child. Angel’s Antiques has had enormous success with over 70,000 square feet and 500 vendors from around the country. “Angel’s is considered one of the biggest and best indoor antique & flea malls in the South,” says Bill. “Angel’s was rated by Lucky

“Vendors at Angel’s made over $2 million last year,” says Bill. “Vendors from Angel’s have opened over 20 antique stores across the South.” Trip Advisor has rated Angel’s as the second most popular attraction in Opelika behind Robert Trent Jones. “Angel’s has over 10 billboards,” adds Bill “that drive business from the major highways and I-85 to Opelika.” The antique mall also draws a tremendous number of students from Auburn University searching for items to decorate apartments or dorm rooms.

Our location by I85 has always been key. Being situated between Atlanta, Montgomery and Columbus brings a tremendous amount of traffic thru our area.

When Joan Asbury was a newlywed, she wrote in her prayer journal a desire to be involved in interior design one day. That dream came true with Wakefield Home, a home décor shop with antiques and new items. The location of Joan’s business could not be more perfect. The home shop occupies the front space in Alabama Office Supply, one of Opelika’s oldest businesses. Her husband, Wake, is the third generation to continue the family business since 1946. “Wakefield” is a family name. Her husband Harris Wakefield Asbury Jr. was named after his father and grandmother Wakefield.

Joan’s personal inspiration has been watching birds build nests and how specific they are to use a little of this and that for their nests. Over the years, she expanded into home decorating. “I consider it

While considering this, her father, E.B. Odom Jr., died after a battle with pancreatic cancer. Joan knew her mother needed her. She was hesitant about the business venture, but Wake convinced Joan her mother needed to be involved in something different that the new business would provide. Antiquing had been her mother’s hobby that she introduced to her daughters. “I felt we were coming full circle,” says Joan. A year and a half ago Joan was standing in Alabama Office Supply when she received news the owners of the Marketplace were retiring. Wake encouraged her to move into their space. “I felt he was pulling me into the store, and God was pushing me,” she says, “so here I am with Wakefield Home under the same roof.

The shop features antiques, new pieces with upholstered furniture and accessories from lines they have carried for many years. “It goes back to the nest,” says Joan, “with so many components that make each person’s nest with paintings, art work, rugs, mirrors, lamps and candles.” She also carries an array of jewelry, lotions and scarves. Wakefield Home handles commercial projects, new construction and smaller decorating projects. “In the Bible, it says to delight yourself in the Lord and He will give you the desires of your heart,” says Joan. “Being part of a community where we were raised and have been able to raise our children is a gift.” Wakefield Home is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. and by appointment on Saturday. o

Lifestyle Community Garden Promotes Civic Engagement

n 2014 Opelika Grows broke ground for a Community Garden at the Cultural Arts Center. Opelika Grows is a partnership of Auburn University, Food Bank of East Alabama, Keep Opelika Beautiful and Opelika City Schools. Built upon the history of Alabama agriculture to sustain its citizens, Opelika Grows was started in 2012 by Dr. Sean Forbes, a Professor at Auburn University. The goal of the organization is to install and provide programming for service-learning gardens as platforms to pursue life-long learning.

Opelika Grows seeks to accomplish this goal through working with the local citizens and students. Ornamental and produce gardens serve as outdoor classrooms for local students in partner schools. School gardens have been created in five Opelika City Schools with plans for the other schools. Students maintain their crop for the semester, they harvest and divide their yield between donations to the Community Market and class or school consumption. Opelika Grows is achieving the goal of educating local citizens by creating the Community Garden. Property owned by the City of Opelika has been leased by Keep Opelika Beautiful, one of the Opelika Grows, for the development of the Community Garden. The garden is divided into various size plots: large, medium and small. For a nominal fee, residents of Lee County can lease areas on a first-come, first-serve basis. Lease holders may plant anything they wish in their plot. Monthly workshops are held the second Saturday of every month. Topics discussed include pesticide management, plant spacing, and seed selection. After the workshop, leaseholders plant, weed and water their plot. Opelika Grows considers these designated workdays a success in promoting civic engagement.

Recently, the children planted peppers, peas and tomatoes. In April the children picked and tasted broccoli. Worship Lee County National Day of Prayer for “One Nation, Under God”

or 63 years, Americans of all faiths have gathered annually the first Thursday in May to set aside time to pray for our nation and its leaders. This event is known as the National Day of Prayer and has been observed by Lee County and been a part of its culture for over 25 years.

Dating back to early 1775, the First Continental Congress called for national days of prayer while forming the new nation. The law formalizing the observance of such a day was enacted in 1952 and signed by President Truman; however, President Reagan amended the law in 1988 for the National Day of Prayer to be the first Thursday of May each year. The City of Opelika has held public events such as the Lee County National Day of Prayer in accordance with the National Day of Prayer Task Force which is a Christian organization. Lee County’s gathering unites Christians to lift up praises and prayers to God through Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit. Bishop Larry Torbert, Mr. Bill White, and Mrs. Laura Fuller are among the individuals responsible for coordinating the gatherings at Courthouse Square. All Christians are encouraged to attend and observe the National Day of Prayer with the Opelika community. Keynote speakers gather on Courthouse Square to turn to God in prayer and meditation for the city, state, and nation’s wellbeing. Local bands also gather in praise and worship through songs of hope and prosperity.

On May 1, 2014 the community of Opelika gathered at noon in the Courthouse Square to observe the National Day of Prayer with a theme of “One Voice United in Prayer.” This was taken from the Bible in Romans 15:6, “So that with one mind and one voice you may glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.” Those who could not attend were still able to experience the power of prayer and worship. Education Backpack Program Provides Weekend Food Bags For Hungry Children By: Kate Asbury Larkin

s in any community, Opelika has children who are chronically hungry and may get their only meals during the school day. That leaves weekends where it is possible that many children will not have a full meal over the entire 60-plus hours before they return to school Monday morning. Determined to do what they could to combat this issue, the Food Bank of East Alabama, along with the Junior League of Lee County, launched the Food Bank Backpack Program in 2012 to provide weekend food supplements to underserved children. “We know we can’t do everything, but that will not prevent us from doing something,” said Martha Henk, director of the food bank. “We are not necessarily called to be successful, just to be faithful, and this program is a good example of that.” Volunteers come to the food bank to pack the plastic bags and deliver the goods to the schools where counselors and teachers discreetly place the food into the children’s backpacks on Fridays. Careful attention is paid to the ease of opening (cans), ease of preparation and nutritional value. A typical backpack might include individual packs of oatmeal

or cereal, pop-top meals such as beef ravioli, mac and cheese or chili, pudding and fruit cups and miscellaneous snacks like granola bars, pretzels and crackers. “School counselors are briefed on what to look for in a child,” Henk said. “They look for things like extreme hunger on Monday mornings, hoarding food, asking for seconds or physical traits like puffy or swollen skin, extreme thinness or chronically dry lips or eyes.” Personnel wholeheartedly welcome the program into their schools.

“If these children can have one less thing to worry about-‘what will I eat Saturday morning, or what will I have Sunday afternoon, or what will I have to eat during Spring Break,’ then they can be a kid,” said elementary school counselor Sheryl Smith. “They can come to school, focus on their learning, focus on being a good friend and not have to worry about their hunger.” The first year, the backpack program served three local schools (one in each of Opelika, Auburn and Loachapoka), but generous funding and dedicated volunteers made it possible to triple to a total of nine local schools in 2013-14. Both children and their parents often send notes of thanks to the food bank. “I love the snack pack and I appreciate it,” one child wrote. “I love it because it’s hard for us and we are struggling and I love the snack pack.” Another child wrote, “I’m happy you send me this yummy food. I don’t know why, but thank you for all you’ve done. I wish I could see you. I will pray for you every day.” The Backpack Program is not a federally-funded program and is, therefore, totally reliant on local donations from corporate/community sponsors, individuals, groups and grants. The program costs approximately $3.50 per child per week. A child can receive a bag of food each weekend for the entire school year for $112. Everything Old is New Again Opelika High School Construction Complete

hen word spread that Opelika High School was going to be torn down and rebuilt in the same location while students were still on campus, many did not think that was even possible. Now, two years later, the massive project is complete and, as the old saying goes, it went off without a hitch. The original OHS opened in 1972. The pieces of the building were pre-constructed before shipping and arrived ready to be “assembled” on site. A big fad for school construction in its day, walls were on tracks that could be moved around totally re-arranging the school layout from one year to the next. But 30 years later, major issues that needed to be addressed required the building to be brought up to current building codes and as it turned out, that was going to be impossible.

The “cool” walls on wheels did not go all the way to the ceiling; and the company that made them was long gone. It was kind of like “the leg bone’s connected to the hip bone” sort of thing and it quickly became apparent, the original building would have to be completely replaced. So, after several years of working with architects and contractors, a plan was devised. With the generosity of a very supportive mayor and city council, financing was secured and construction began in spring of 2012. For the past two years, students and teachers who were in the original building have been in portable classrooms while the students in classes in buildings built after 1972 remained in those areas. Logistically, what could have been a nightmare was a masterpiece. “We took down sections of the old building one area at a time,” said Josh Farr, project engineer with Robins and

Morton. “We built a wall blocking off the areas we were working in, so students and staff really didn’t even know we were there. It was the most unique project I have ever been a part of, but we made it work.” After all was said and done, more than 180,000 square feet was removed and more than 200,000 square feet of new space was added, including a second floor which OHS had not had on the old campus.

OHS Principal Farrell Seymore said students, faculty, staff and the whole Opelika community have so much (more) to be proud of with the new school.

The $46 million project also included major renovation to Bulldog Stadium and the addition of an indoor practice facility, both completed in 2013. And to OHS alumni, rest assured, you can still drift back in time and find your feet down on Main Street. It is still there. The Bulldog Café now has a self-contained area for dining surrounded with televisions able to broadcast the latest OHS and/or local, state or national news.

Southern Union Undergoes Three-Phase Construction Project

outhern Union State Community College’s Opelika campus is getting a fresh look with new construction projects currently underway.

Phase two of the campus improvement project is currently underway and features construction of two new instructional classroom buildings.

A new parking lot and the revamping of the campus walking trail completed phase one of Southern Union’s construction projects.

“A new Center for Integrated Manufacturing will replace six 50 year-old technical shop buildings. The Center for Integrated Manufacturing will be a 70,000 square foot twostory structure that will combine eight technical programs currently housed in the shops into one integrated facility,” Brown said.

According to Shondae Brown, Coordinator of College Relations at Southern Union, 764 additional parking spaces were added. “To streamline traffic flow on campus, two new entrances, one on West Point Parkway and the other on Lake Condy Road, were also created. These entrances will give students easier access to parking and will create a more pedestrian-friendly environment. The current main campus entrance on US Highway 431, directly across from Opelika High School, will be closed,” Brown said. A new ¼ mile walking trail replaced the old walking track. The trail is fully lighted and features a cushioned walking surface. In the center of the trail is a flat, grassy area in which children can play. The recreation area also features a picnic pavilion and a two-acre pond with a lighted fountain.

“The building will contain technical shops, classrooms, a computer lab, and office space. The adult education department which administers the GED education program and provides instruction for day and evening students will be located in the facility, as well as the skills training department which provides noncredit instruction,” Brown explained. The new Business and Technology Center will provide more classroom and computer lab space, along with a large meeting area. This building will be 45,000 square feet on three levels. According to Brown, the new space will contain an expanded campus testing center which administers a placement test for all students entering the college, an expanded open computer lab for students to use on the campus, seven computer class-

rooms, six academic classrooms, office space, and a multi-purpose meeting area which will hold up to 400 people and which will be available for use by the college and the community. The final phase of the construction project, which is scheduled for completion in the spring of 2016, will be the creation of a pedestrian area that will tie all the improvements together. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The goal is to give the campus a more collegiate feel and to give students easier access from one side of campus to the other,â&#x20AC;? Brown said. o

ith budget cuts nationwide, many school systems have had to cut arts programs just to survive, but not in Opelika; in the Opelika City Schools, arts have remained a priority from kindergarten through twelfth grade.

Every elementary school student has art and music weekly. Third graders have six weeks of violin instruction and students in every grade (K-12) consistently win local and state awards with artwork. The Opelika Middle School bands have earned top honors at the OrlandoFest Competition in Orlando for the past 33 consecutive years and OMS introduced a show choir four years ago, a feeder program for the popular choral programs at Opelika High School, which include chamber and show choirs. The OMS band fully prepares students for the OHS marching, jazz and/or symphonic bands. In addition to competitions, both the OMS and OHS bands play for sporting events, concerts and other local performances. OHS offers three blocks of guitar that offer two of the best attended concerts during the school year (fall and spring). All band programs

never shies away from a challenge, whether it be the large varied cast of the Sound of Music, the true musical Les Miserables or childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s productions like Beauty and the Beast and Alice in Wonderland. OHTS started with two productions a year (play in the fall; musical in the spring), then moved to three,

then four and with their competition performance, OHS theatre will offer four productions in the 2014-15 school year including Youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re a Good Man, Charlie Brown in the fall of 2014 and The Phantom of the Opera in spring, 2015. Whether a newcomer or a native, if you have not seen an OHTS production, you have missed a treat and if you have attended, you, no doubt, make it a point to see every production (see coupon below). Those in the audience have to keep reminding themselves that the performers are high school students. Arts & Entertainment The Museum of East Alabama Portrays Past Lifestyles Pioneer, War and Industry

arved arrowheads, memorabilia from pioneer cabins and artifacts from a local prisoner of war camp are among collections suspended in time at the Museum of East Alabama in downtown Opelika. Images from frontier life to the age of industry are depicted in an unfolding visual history.

Currently, the museum is featuring a special exhibit to commemorate the WWI Centennial. Soldiers from Opelika served bravely in the Great War and played a decisive role in several battles. At the Battle of Croix Rouge Farm, 162 officers and men from the Alabama regiment of the Rainbow Division, the 167th, died and more than a thousand Alabamians were wounded. Major Dallas Smith of Opelika commanded the 3rd Battalion in the battle, which included hand-to-hand fighting. Among the lost were 1st Lt. John Powell, commander of Opelika’s I Company and four other officers in the Alabama regiment. Col. Douglas MacArthur wrote, “The 167th Alabama assisted by the left of the 168th Iowa had stormed and captured the Croix Rouge Farm in a manner which for its gallantry I do not believe has been surpassed in military history.”

Nimrod Frazer has written a book titled Send the Alabamians, WWI Fighters in the Rainbow Division to tell the story of the Battle of Croix Rouge Farm and of the Alabama 167th. The books are available at the museum with all proceeds going to support the Museum of East Alabama. Other exhibits in the East Alabama at War section feature the Civil War, WWII, Korean War and Vietnam War history. One unique exhibit features the story of “Camp Opelika,” which housed German prisoners during WWII. This popular exhibit has attracted attention across the globe. It includes items crafted by the prisoners and pictures of life in the camp, along with many artifacts, including a searchlight used for camp security. Located at the site of the Old Clement Hotel, the museum opened its doors in August 1989, with the late J.T. and Eleanor Harris as founders. The museum has continued to grow and a lower gallery has been added to accommodate over 5,000 artifacts. A collection of diverse exhibits reveals the history of several counties, with the main focus on Lee County, featuring business, rural and architectural heritage. The history and growth

of industry in Opelika are shown in exhibits, including Pepperell Mill with the Pepperell Post Office, cotton-weighing machine, a loom that made sheets, pictures and other items from the mills. Other exhibits of interest include a covered bridge collection and rare Roanoke dolls, which were produced in a small town in East Alabama. An unusual item from the past is an early hair curling station. A frontier kitchen and turn of the century parlor provide a glimpse into the past, while memorabilia record the careers of two baseball legends from Opelika, Roy Lee Jackson and Billy Hitchcock. A wealth of treasures and knowledge are waiting to be discovered, as the past bids visitors to stop a moment from fast paced lifestyles to reflect on another time. he Arts Association of East Alabama celebrates its 28th season of the Performance Series with outstanding productions in music, theatre and dance, featuring national and international touring productions at the Opelika Center for the Performing Arts.

The guiding spirit behind the Series is finding the best events to represent each of the major areas of the arts in terms of music, theater and dance with variety within those areas, and then looking at what is available coming in and out of the region,” Preston explains.

“Newcomers don’t expect to find a full fledge theater facility in a small town,” says Phillip Preston, director of the Performance Series. “It is fun to see people’s reactions, especially if they moved here from larger areas. They think they are moving into a cultural desert until they learn about our Series. We are doing a lot on the same level as larger cities at much reduced prices.”

“We are trying to develop programming within a certain comfort zone of familiarity but with some cutting edge performances as well.” East Alabama Arts catches productions moving through Atlanta, Birmingham as well as cities in Florida, Louisiana, Texas and other areas as they head to points east/west, north/south on their national tours.

Since the Series opened in September 1987 with the Alabama Symphony Orchestra, each season has featured a variety of performances including Broadway tours, symphony orchestras, opera companies and entertainers. Popular performances over the past two decades include the Bolshoi Symphony, the Warsaw Philharmonic, New York City Opera, Madame Butterfly, the Ten Tenors, Oklahoma, Cinderella, Chicago, Kiss Me Kate, 5 Browns, The Sound of Music, Big River, Wynton Marsalis, Crazy For You, among many others.

Preston is involved in securing performances one to three years ahead. “We are scouting for a combination of events with a particular variety that will work for us, and we are still guided by that same spirit of innovation as the Performance Series has evolved through nearly three decades now. Making sure of the quality, the variety, and a sense of discovery and willingness to challenge preconceived notions within the programming, is paramount to a successful venture.” A hallmark of the Series has been the level of community support with subscribers and contributors. There’s No Place Like Home Chief John McEachern Returns To Where It All Began

hough Opelika’s 13th police chief is the “new guy” to 99 of his 103 employees, John McEachern is not new to the Opelika Police Department; he has returned home.

After four years in Pennsylvania, McEachern was up for a rotational assignment and this time, he was given a choice of locations-if you want to call it that.

McEachern joined the OPD in 1974, beginning as a dispatch operator before moving into the patrol division in 1975. In 1976, he was assigned to the traffic enforcement division and in 1978 was promoted to the detective division where he stayed until he left the department in 1988 when he got “the call.”

“I had a choice of Southern California or New Jersey,” McEachern said. “Even though it was on the other side of the country, there was no question I was going to take the Los Angeles Field Office (LAFO); I was sick of the snow! In fact, the last thing I did when we pulled out of Pennsylvania was to put our snow shovels in the middle of the road and I drove over them in my van. I never looked back.”

“My lifelong dream was to be an Agent with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI),” McEachern said. “That door opened for me in 1988 when I got the call to report to the FBI Academy in Quantico, Va. for 16 weeks of training.” Following graduation from the academy, McEachern planned to be assigned to an FBI division somewhere south of the Mason-Dixon line, but you know what they say about bestlaid plans. “All my buddies from southern states were getting assignments in Florida, Georgia and Tennessee, so I was just waiting for my call to go to Atlanta or somewhere like that,” McEachern said. “Instead, I was assigned to New Castle, Pennsylvania. I have such a supportive wife and my boys, Jory and Hobson were very young so Theresa and I packed up our family and off we went to live 850 miles from home.”

In California, McEachern was initially assigned to G-3- the “G” is short for gangs-where he worked on the most violent of cases in Los Angeles. He stayed in that position until moving onto the bank robbery squad in 1996. “Bank robberies was one of the very busiest squads,” McEachern said. “In the academy, I was told this was the last squad I wanted to be on because you have to work 125-150 cases at a time, but that is exactly what I wanted to do; I wanted to be busy. In the state of California, there were 2,641 bank robberies in one year in 1992-93. My very first day, we had 10 bank robberies. In one day.” McEachern continued to move up, being named a supervisor in 2001 where he stayed until he was ordered to FBIHQ (FBI

Headquarters). McEachern opted to accept his OP (Office of Preference) in 2006 and return to Alabama where the elusive “south-of-the-Mason-Dixon-line” position opened up and of all places, it was in the Opelika office. “I was so happy to come back to the community I grew up in and have always loved,” McEachern said. “It was so good to be home after being away for 18 years.” McEachern worked in the Opelika FBI office until fall of 2012 when he turned 58, the age of mandatory retirement from the FBI. Then, just six months later, he returned to active duty when Mayor Gary Fuller named him Chief of Police for the Opelika Police Department. “I’m still like a kid in a candy store; I’m just so excited,” McEachern said. “I’m enjoying being back in the department where I got my start and just being back in a place that has always been so special to me and to Theresa. We are so happy.” McEachern says the biggest difference in FBI and local police work is the daily interaction with the people in the community.

department and my hope is to have a positive impact on my officers and on the citizens of Opelika.” McEachern says he did not come into the position with an agenda for change. “I want to get to know my staff, meet them face-to-face, observe and see if everybody is where they need to be, in positions that best benefit the officer, the department and Opelika,” McEachern said. The chief has encouraged and instructed his officers to practice “community oriented policing.” “I want them to get involved in this great city,” McEachern said. “Get out of their squad cars, walk the streets, meet the citizens, talk to the kids, shake hands, hand out business cards and really enjoy their career and this community. I don’t want them sitting behind the wheel of a car all day; I want the people of Opelika to get to know them and them to know the citizens. We are all in this together.” o

“I’ve enjoyed being a part of Opelika again,” McEachern said. “I feel like I bring wisdom and a lot of experience to the
