MISSION

The McNay Art Museum engages a diverse community in the discovery and enjoyment of the visual arts.

VISION

The McNay will be San Antonio’s place of belonging, where the Museum’s expanding community is reflected in transformational art experiences.

CORE VALUES

ON LEGACY AND EXCELLENCE

As we embark on a new season of important exhibitions, engaging programming, and new leadership, I find myself reflecting on the McNay’s legacy of artistic excellence and community impact. This issue of Impressions brings focus to our longstanding legacy of visionary exhibitions and dedicated leaders.

In January, we proudly announced the appointment of J. David Oppenheimer as president of the Board of Trustees. David’s affinity for the McNay began in the summer of 1968 when he worked under John Leeper, who was the McNay director at the time. He succeeds Don Frost, who served as the Museum’s Board president for five years, thirteen years as a trustee, and forty-one years as a volunteer. In addition, we welcomed two new trustees, CeCe Frost Griffin and Cliff Hurd, who both continue their family’s tradition of service to the Museum. I’m excited to work with our dynamic Board as we embark on a refreshed strategic plan that will deepen our engagement with a diverse community in the discovery and enjoyment in the visual arts.

This spring, we present two very different—yet equally stunning—banner exhibitions. As featured on the cover, we honor Michael Tracy’s legacy with the much-anticipated Michael Tracy: The Elegy of Distance. In 1971, the McNay mounted Tracy’s first-ever museum exhibition, Seven Gold Paintings. Now, we honor Tracy’s enduring artistic legacy with the last exhibition with which the artist was directly involved before his passing on June 15, 2024 at the age of 80.

An exhibition of Tracy’s work at this precise moment, so close to his passing, is especially poignant. It will serve to honor his lifelong dedication to his artistic practice and reinforce his critical contributions to the visual arts, squarely placing him as one of the leading American artists known to grapple with some of the most pressing issues we face today, helping us understand, process, and confront them in an informed and thoughtful way.

In the coinciding banner exhibition, Sport and Spectator, sports gear and paraphernalia become works of art. The exhibition celebrates American sports culture and confronts its complex intersection with race, gender, and class. Visitors will appreciate the exhibition’s focus on materiality and will consider athletics’ role in shaping society.

In line with team spirit and community engagement, the McNay debuts its reimagined peacock mascot this spring. The peacock is a prominent symbol of our brand story and a homage to our founder, Marion Koogler McNay, who incorporated images of peacocks throughout her home and was said to have them roaming the grounds. Our brand story extends further to the shopping experience. Swing by The McNay Store, which has returned to the Patio Gallery and features all-new products that reflect and celebrate our community.

We hope to see you at an array of programs, including the return of McNay Summer Art Camp as well as signature events like Collecting Texas: Houston, McNay Print Fair, Family Day, and more. I look forward to continuing our rich legacies with you.

McNAY ART MUSEUM NAMES NEW BOARD OF TRUSTEES PRESIDENT AND WELCOMES TWO NEW TRUSTEES

The McNay Art Museum announces the appointment of J. David Oppenheimer as president of the Board of Trustees. Additionally, the Museum appointed two new trustees, CeCe Frost Griffin and Cliff Hurd. The three appointees continue decades-long family legacies of service to the Museum.

“As we embark on a refreshed strategic plan, we look forward to the insight, guidance, and support that David, CeCe, and Cliff will provide,” said Matthew McLendon, director and CEO of the McNay Art Museum. “We are grateful to have them join our dynamic Board comprised of leaders from the arts, business, education, law, philanthropy, and healthcare sectors.”

Mr. Oppenheimer succeeds Don Frost, who served a total of thirteen years as a trustee. During Mr. Frost’s tenure, the Museum’s national and international visibility grew substantially through important exhibitions, including Dreamland | Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas and de la Torre Brothers: Upward Mobility.

Mr. Frost’s many accomplishments included helping to transform the outdoor visitor experience through the successful completion of the $6.5 million Phase 1 of the Landscape Master Plan. He also successfully navigated the challenges of the pandemic during which the Board created a strategic plan that covered 2021-2024. Mr. Frost will become trustee emeritus and will continue to actively support the McNay.

“I applaud Don for his tremendous leadership,” McLendon said. “Following his father, Tom C. Frost Jr., Don continued a legacy of community impact, and with it the commitment to increase access to the Museum. His service affirmed that the McNay will continue to be San Antonio’s place of beauty and belonging.”

J. David Oppenheimer President of the Board of Trustees

J. David Oppenheimer and his family have been involved with the McNay for several decades. Mr. Oppenheimer follows the path of his father, Jesse Oppenheimer, who was a McNay trustee from 1957 until his death in 2009. Mr. Oppenheimer’s early exposure to the McNay led him to work for the then-director, John Leeper, during the summer of 1968. He has remained a dedicated supporter to the Museum and has served as a trustee since 2016.

Mr. Oppenheimer is senior counsel at Clark Hill, where he represents large companies, business owners, and individual entrepreneurs in a wide variety of transactions including acquisitions, divestitures, and mergers. He was named among The Best Lawyers in America® for Banking and Finance Law (2006-2025) and Corporate Law (2006-2025) by Best Lawyers. He holds a B.A. from University of Pennsylvania and a J.D. from University of Texas School of Law.

“ “

I am honored to be named president of the McNay Art Museum’s Board of Trustees, and I take this moment to acknowledge Don Frost for his years of service and dedication to the Museum. My hope for the McNay is to open our doors wider to our expanding community. One of my priorities is to enhance the financial resources of the McNay to make the visitor experience even better than it is today.

CeCe Frost Griffin is dedicated to connecting people to their passions through philanthropy. She has developed her leadership skills and relationships through work in public and legislative affairs and corporate, community, and donor relations teams. Drawing from these experiences, she leads the donor engagement team as the associate vice president for donor engagement at the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA), where she has launched and contributed in two successful comprehensive campaigns, generating hundreds of millions of dollars, increasing donor and alumni retention rates, and engaging donors at all levels. She believes that donor experience is the key to fundraising success.

Inspired by a family of community and relationship builders, she was taught that when you give back to your community, you too will benefit. As an active member of the San Antonio community, she fulfills her personal mission through volunteering and supporting organizations committed to education, arts and culture, and women’s empowerment. She previously served as a board member of Girls, Inc. of San Antonio and Landa Gardens Conservancy, and currently serves on the boards of the San Antonio Academy, Teach for America San Antonio, and the McNay Art Museum. She is also a member of and volunteers for numerous non-profits across the region. In keeping with family tradition, she and her husband, James, hope to motivate their three young children to prioritize their relationships with others and give back to their communities that give so much to them.

She received a B.A. in visual and media arts from Emerson College.

I am honored to join the McNay, a long-cherished institution in my life, as a trustee. I proudly carry on a Frost family legacy of serving the McNay as we advance its mission to transform lives through the power of art. I look forward to working with Matthew, the Board, and the talented staff to reach the Museum’s goals.

Cliff Hurd is president of Hurd Enterprises, Ltd. He holds a B.A. in economics from Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut and an M.B.A. with a concentration in finance from The University of Texas in Austin.

As a member of the executive management team of Hurd Enterprises, Ltd., Mr. Hurd oversees the family’s real estate operations and investment ventures as well as the tax and accounting functions of the family enterprise. Hurd Enterprises, Ltd. is a fourthgeneration, family-owned company with a 100-year history in South Texas. The family enterprise operates businesses in three sectors: oil and gas exploration and production, real estate and land development, and ranching. The family also makes direct investments and operates a family office.

The Hurd family’s real estate operations include investment in and development of single and multi-story suburban office buildings in San Antonio and Laredo, as well as industrial and residential lot development in Laredo. The family has also developed apartment, industrial, and self-storage properties in the area.

Mr. Hurd is a Chartered Financial Analyst and serves as the chair of the endowment fund board for CHRISTUS Children’s Hospital of San Antonio. He is also a member of the investment committee of the McNay Art Museum and a member of the San Antonio Gold chapter of Young Presidents’ Organization. Cliff and his wife Vanessa have three children: Owen, Anna, and Camille.

“ “

I am excited to begin my role as a trustee of the McNay; to follow in the footsteps of my mother, who served in multiple roles including a past Board president; and to more deeply engage with a treasured San Antonio institution.

Michael Tracy: The Elegy of Distance

March 1–July 27, 2025

Tobin Exhibition Galleries

The late artist and activist Michael Tracy is known for color-saturated paintings, assembled and cast sculptures, and mixed-media objects that address issues of faith, ritual, immigration, and the environment. Tracy, an Ohio native, earned a bachelor’s degree in literature and art at St. Edward’s University, studied at the Cleveland Institute of Art, and earned a master’s degree in studio art from The University of Texas at Austin. The McNay hosted Tracy’s first museum exhibition, Seven Gold Paintings, in 1971. In 1978, he established his studio in San Ygnacio, Texas, where he turned more of his attention to preserving neglected 19th-century architecture on the Texas-Mexico border.

In remarkable symmetry, fifty-four years after his first-ever exhibition, his works return to the McNay in the last exhibition he was directly involved with before his recent death at age 80. The exhibition surveys the second half of his career, and many of the works—paintings, sculptures, and mixed media abstract objects—have never been exhibited before. The presentation features large-scale paintings spanning floor to ceiling while an original soundscape commissioned from composer Omar Zubair immerses visitors in the enthralling world of Michael Tracy.

The exhibition is organized by René Paul Barilleaux, head of curatorial affairs, in collaboration with Christopher Rincón, president of the Michael Tracy Foundation and director of the River Pierce Foundation.

Major funding is provided by the Arthur and Jane Stieren Fund for Exhibitions and Peter M. Holt. Additional support is provided by the Flora Crichton Visiting Artist Fund; Semmes Foundation, Inc.; Elizabeth Huth Coates Charitable Foundation of 1992; Louis H. and Mary Patricia Stumberg Foundation; Christopher C. Hill; and Sara Paschall Dodd-Denton.

EXHIBITION

Designing Shakespeare through the Ages

March 27–July 6, 2025

Brown Gallery and Tobin Wing

Designing Shakespeare through the Ages explores the changing conversations surrounding William Shakespeare’s many plays primarily through the designs of Hamlet, Macbeth, Romeo and Juliet, The Tempest, Twelfth Night, Othello, The Merchant of Venice, and King Lear. Despite many of these plays being written before 1610, they speak to present-day artists around the world just as they did to the audiences that first saw them. Each play approaches different themes, revealing a different facet to the human condition. Through the designs and conversations that surround these plays, we can see the ways in which they are still as alive now as they were 400 years ago.

Designing Shakespeare through the Ages is organized for the McNay Art Museum by Remus Moore, The Tobin Theatre Arts Fund assistant curator, The Tobin Collection of Theatre Arts; with René Paul Barilleaux, head of curatorial affairs.

Support is provided by The Tobin Theatre Arts Fund.

A Focus on Pop Culture and Community

The exhibition highlights pop culture references and forges partnerships with the local community. Looking at the ways that Shakespeare’s writings have influenced our cultural landscape, programs will enhance the visitor experience with a special soundtrack, featuring pop songs inspired by Shakespeare’s plays and poems, as well as through a partnership with our local theatre community.

The McNay is proud to partner with San Pedro Playhouse on an array of workshops related to theatre arts. Participants will gain hands-on experience in costume design and acting alongside experts. The McNay will also have a presence at their Shakespeare in the Park event, a San Antonio tradition where the San Pedro Playhouse stages Shakespeare plays in San Pedro Springs Park. This year features Romeo + Juliet, opening on March 25, 2025.
