TRAVIS AIR FORCE BASE — Col. Corey A. Simmons called on three final responses of “Let’s Go” from the airmen of the 60th Air Mobility Wing, and saluted and bid them adieu as their commander during Wednesday’s Change of Command ceremony in hangar 837. Simmons relinquished his command to Col. Derek M. Salmi in an elaborate ceremony before local and military leaders, and the men and women who served under him. The Kentucky native with the boisterous Southern personality now transitions to Air Mobility Command headquarters at Scott Air Force Base, Illinois. Simmons will serve as the chief of staff to Maj. General Kenneth T.Bibb Jr., 18th Air Force Commander. Bibb was on hand at Travis as the presiding officer of the ceremony. “Serving with Team Travis was one of the most gratifying assignments of my career,” Simmons said. “Not every day was sunshine and rainbows, but I knew I had the best team at the best base. When the nation calls, we deliver.” Simmons had previously served in Air Mobility Command as a vice wing commander, squadron commander, operations officer, C-17A instructor pilot and aircraft commander. He is a command pilot with more than 3,200 hours in airlift and trainer aircraft. Salmi comes to Travis from Fairchild Air Force Base in Washington where he served as the 92nd Air Refueling Wing commander. He takes responsibility for the combined efforts of all wing operations and support activities associated with the worldwide air mobility mission. The C-5M Super Galaxy, KC-10 Extender and C-17 Globemaster III aircraft at Travis participate in airlift and aerial refueling tasks, respond to combat operations directed by the Joint Chiefs of Staff and support See Travis, Page A8

New Fairfield patrol system puts officers in neighborhoods Todd R. Hansen

FAIRFIELD — Shifts of two police officers are being assigned to eight beat areas of the city in a kind of “throwback” to neighborhood patrols. The officers will stay with their assigned beats for at least six months, the Police Department said in a statement released Tuesday. The new system went into effect on July 1. “The newly drawn beats, which correspond more closely to neighborhood boundaries and take into better account the city’s geography, will be patrolled 24 hours a day by officers assigned an area for at least six months at a time. Two beats make up a (public service area), which is managed by a lieutenant,” the department said in a statement. A sergeant is assigned as a beat coordinator in each of the eight areas. The realignment allows officers “to engage with residents and prevent crime from happening instead of responding to incidents after they occur.” “We expect the new system will help the department build an even stronger partnership with the community. Because officers will engage with residents on a more regular basis, See Patrol, Page A8 INDEX Arts B4 | Classifieds B6 | Comics A7, B5 Crossword A6, B4 | Obituaries A4 Opinion B3 | Sports B1 | TV Daily A7, B5

Fairfield makes gains in adding women to Police Department Todd R. Hansen

THANSEN@DAILYREPUBLIC.NET

FAIRFIELD — The city has 12 more female police officers than it had when, two years ago, it joined the national 30x30 Initiative to advance women in policing. That same year, 2020, Fairfield hired its first female police chief, Deanna Cantrell. “We have not had to lower standards or pass up qualified applicants. If anything, we widen the pool. The 30x30 Initiative gave us some tools to help us get qualified, diverse candidates to apply so that we have those options during the hiring process,” Cantrell said in a statement released Wednesday. The department had eight female officers when it made the pledge. It has 20 now, including Cantrell, representing 16% of the force. The national goal of the initiative is 30% of all officers being female by 2030. WEATHER 90 | 59 Sunny. Five-day forecast on B10.

The national average is 12%, the city reported. Cantrell said a large reason for the increase at the Fairfield department is because more women can see themselves as officers, and the city emphasizing to possible recruits that they belong. “If you don’t see yourself in a police department, it’s difficult to say, ‘I could be there.’ Fairfield is an incredibly diverse community, but our applications haven’t always reflected that. So, the recruiting part is more about us getting out there and saying, ‘You belong here’.” How much that has to do with the city hiring a woman as its top cop is difficult to say, but Mayor Harry Price believes her influence has been significant. “I am very much impressed with the approach the chief has taken and how much more integrated she has See Women, Page A8
