FAIRFIELD — A Solano County man became the second individual since May to die of a Covidrelated cause. His death takes the total for the pandemic to 427, and 164 since the vaccines were readily available to the public since July 2021. Of those 164, 39 individuals were vaccinated, the county Public Health Division reported. The latest victim of the disease was 65 or older and living at home. He was not vaccinated, the county reported. There were 630 new coronavirus cases reported since the last update on Monday, but only 487 were actually during that three-day period. The 10-day daily case average dropped from 214.7 to 206.9, the county reported. The total cases for the pandemic is at 94,965. Stocks tumble worldwide with recession worries mounting
Tribune Content Agency
Stocks tumbled around the globe as recession fears resurfaced, with the Federal Reserve struggling to get on top of inflation that has proved more persistent and widespread than officials anticipated. The S&P 500 closed at its lowest since December 2020, while the tech-heavy Nasdaq 100 sank 4%. The deal spread on Elon Musk’s proposed takeover of Twitter Inc. widened as the billionaire wasn’t directly asked and didn’t address the issue on whether he’s committed to buying the social-media firm during a staff meeting. Homebuilders slid as mortgage rates jumped the most since 1987. In late trading, Adobe Inc. slumped after cutting its sales forecast. See Stocks, Page A8

Jan. 6 committee: Trump knew asking Pence to overturn election was illegal

SUNDAY
VALLEJO — Carrie Underwood was at the Solano County Fair Thursday night. Not that Carrie Underwood. This one was sporting a thick auburn mane and Minnesota timbre. “I have no musical talent at all,” Underwood said with a laugh, eliminating any other doubts about being her famous namesake. Still, she was
taken by the country sounds of Vacaville’s own Crossman Connection playing on one of the fairgrounds’ main outdoor stages. The music drew a number of people to the area, and even prompted some to dance. Across the way was a hypnotist act, a staple of country fairs. Underwood said she used to live in the Cordelia area and came to the fair often,
WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump knew that asking Vice President Mike Pence to unilaterally overturn the 2020 presidential election was illegal but pressured him to do it anyway, the House committee investigating Jan. 6, 2021, argued at its Thursday hearing, where it also made the case that Trump put Pence’s life in danger during the Capitol insurrection. The committee outlined a multiweek effort by then-President Trump
and California attorney John Eastman that included private meetings and tweets aimed at pressuring Pence to help keep Trump in office. Eastman’s theory was that Pence could either reject electoral votes outright or suspend the proceedings and declare a 10-day recess during which state legislatures would be ordered to reexamine election results. Neither approach is allowed under the Constitution’s 12th Amendment or the Electoral Count Act of 1887, witnesses testified
