Eastern front cities slowly dying in Ukraine Tribune Content Agency LYSYCHANSK, Ukraine — How does a city die? To find out, turn to Severodonetsk, at the very edge of the Ukrainian government's control on the eastern front, and currently the focal point of the fight between its soldiers and the Russians who have invaded. Viewing Severodonetsk from across the river that separates it from its sister city Lysychansk, one witnesses the spasms in real time: Almost a dozen columns of smoke wreathe the skyline where tons of Russian ordnance smash through a building and start a fire, the flames twinkling in the distance like a votive candle. The soundtrack of the warfare— the bangs of artillery, the guttural whoosh of rockets launched in rapid succession, the snare-drum beat of heavy machine guns — signals fresh destruction to both cities. "You never get used to it. It's always terrifying," said Natalya Sakolka, a 55-year-old mining engineer and administrator in Lysychansk, standing with a few neighbors in the backyard of her apartment building. She grimaced every time a boom sounded. She grimaced often. Ever since Moscow turned its sights on the Donbas, which encompasses the war-riven east Ukrainian provinces of Luhansk and Donetsk, the city of Severodonetsk, Kyiv's seat of power in Luhansk, has been a key target. In the months since its late February invasion of Ukraine began, the Russian army has made a torturously slow – but steady – advance in the east, unleashing the full power of its artillery arsenal and See Ukraine, Page A7
Senators OK framework of gun legislation Staff and wire reports WASHINGTON — A bipartisan group of senators Sunday announced it had reached a framework for enacting modest gun restrictions, such as closing loopholes and increasing background checks for gun purchases by people between 18 and 21, in response to a recent spate of mass shootings that included a massacre at a Texas elementary school. If enacted and signed by President Joe Biden, the measure would become the most significant piece of firearms legislation produced by Congress in nearly three decades. The group of 20 senators, led by Chris Murphy, D-Conn., and John Cornyn, R-Texas, announced Sunday that they struck a deal “to protect America’s children, keep our schools safe, and reduce the threat of violence across the country.” Although the proposal falls far short of the gun safety reforms Biden has lobbied Congress to pass and is far less sweeping than the comprehensive package that advanced in the House last week, it garnered the immediate support of antigun groups and the White House. The lights of the midway carnival go on at the Solano County Fair in Vallejo starting Thurday.
Solano County Fair returns live after two years of mostly virtual Todd R. Hansen

FAIRFIELD — The midway carnival will have the traditional sounds and smells of a county fair starting Thursday. The theme is "Bales of Fun." After two years of nationally recognized virtual fairs, the Solano County Fair is back on the fairgrounds in Vallejo. It includes 35 hours of live entertainment from 40 performers around the fairgrounds. "It is very interesting, the fair essentially has been shut down
for two years, but has made some significant changes," said Mike Ioakimedes, the executive director of the Solano County Fair Association. "We are staying within the basic fair formate, but we have a very exciting product," Ioakimedes said. And the fair has kept at least a feel of the virtual element by livestreaming some events, and having video replay of other features. The American Armory Museum will have a big presence at the fair, including opportunities to ride in some of the military vehicles, and there will be a car show Saturday. The county Public Health Divi-
sion will host a health fair, including offering Covid-19 vaccines and booster shots. The Bounty of the County event will take place Saturday, highlighting a host of food and drinks produced in Solano. Additionally, there will be a First 5 Zone for the youngest of the fairgoers from Friday through Sunday. It will include a STEM machine. A Mexican rodeo will help close out the excitement. A full schedule of events, including days and times, can be found at https://www.scfair.com/2022-fair.
Quilting: A patchwork of fabrics; and a patchwork of busy artisans Todd R. Hansen

VALLEJO — Kris Cisse knew a lot about quilting long before she started making quilts herself. She even served as a kind of docent at shows when she was just 11 years old. Cisse, however, may not have had any choice about her indoctrination, given that her mother, Jerre Gale, was very active in the hobby. "My mother started quilting in 1975, and so I was always around it," said Cisse, the president of the Vallejo Piecemakers Quilt Guild. Her mother is also a member, joining when she moved to Vallejo a
few years ago. Cisse admits she is not as obsessed with the technical aspects of what truly is an art form, and that is not uncommon for many quilters who are more recent to the craft and perhaps identify more as modern quilters than traditional. Many of the guild members will have their pieces on display at the 2022 Solano County Fair, which opens Thursday at the fairgrounds in Vallejo. On that day, ribbons from the pre-fair judging also will be awarded. But the fair competition is really only a small part of the guild activities. The group makes quilts for
