Tribune Content Agency WASHINGTON — President Joe Biden called for a ban on sales of assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, pleading with Congress to toughen gun laws following a spate of mass shootings. “We need to ban assault weapons and high capacity magazines,” Biden said in a Thursday evening address from the White House. But he acknowledged that Congress is unlikely to ban the weapons, adding: “We should raise the age to purchase them from 18 to 21, strengthen background checks, enact safe storage laws and red flag laws, repeal the immunity that protects gun manufacturers from liability, address the mental health crisis deepening the trauma of gun violence.” Recalling recent meetings with families of shooting victims in Uvalde, Texas, and Buffalo, New York, Biden said, “They had one See Biden, Page A10

The man accused of killing four people at a Tulsa hospital Wednesday blamed his surgeon for his continued back pain, according to police. Officials identified the gunman Thursday as 45-year-old Michael Louis, who had undergone back surgery at the hospital on May 19, Chief Wendell Franklin announced at a press conference with the Tulsa mayor and hospital officials. “We also have a letter on the suspect, which made it clear that he came in with the intent to kill Dr. Phillips and anyone who got in his way,” Franklin said. “He blamed Dr. Phillips for the ongoing pain following the surgery.” Louis opened fire on the second floor of a medical building on the campus of Saint Francis See Tulsa, Page A10

The county reported 1,175 new cases since its last report May 26. It takes the total to 91,490. There were 32 residents in area hospitals who had tested positive for the virus. Typically, about half are in the hospital because of Covid19. Three patients were in intensive care units, the county reported.
