Cemetery hosts early Memorial Day ceremony

Ceremonies set Monday in Fairfield, Vacaville, Vallejo Susan Hiland

DIXON — Memorial Day is a time to mourn our dead, according to Bob Hall, a retired major general who was the main speaker Saturday at the Sacramento Valley National Cemetary. The choice to have a remembrance day early allowed family and friends to place flags on 48,350 graves of soldiers and spouses. “Memorial Day isn’t something new,” Hall said. It was called Decoration Day when he was a child. It was called Decoration Day because the day included an annual, community-wide event, during which businesses closed and residents decorated the graves of soldiers with flowers and flags. It started May 5, 1866, after the Civil War. “But a day of remembrance for soldiers was not new even then,” Hall said. “Ceremonies for the dead soldiers can be traced back hundreds of years.” It was not until the 1970s that the name was changed to Memorial Day and celebrated the last Monday in May. Gov. Newsom tests positive for Covid Tribune Content Agency SACRAMENTO — California Gov. Gavin Newsom tested positive for Covid-19 Saturday morning after exhibiting mild symptoms, according to a statement from his press office. “The governor will continue to work remotely. In accordance with local and state health guidelines, Gov. Newsom will remain in isolation at least through Thursday, June 2 and until he tests negative,” according to Newsom’s office. The Democratic governor has received a prescription for the antiviral medication Paxlovid, and will begin the five-day regiment immediately, his office said. Newsom is vaccinated and has received two booster shots, the most recent one on May 18. His positive test comes just a day after he See Newsom, Page A10

Vacaville welcomes return of Fiesta Days Susan Hiland

VACAVILLE — Fiesta Days is back in full swing with all the things people have loved about the weeklong celebration of the town’s Spanish and western heritage. Fiesta Days has been a staple for the community since 1957. It has happened every year except 1959, when the event was washed out by heavy rain, and then again the past two years because of the Covid-19 pandemic. “Not much has changed,” Phyllis Mitchum, second co-chairwoman and event jailer, said Saturday. “There are extra wash stations and vendors can wear masks if they want.” Mitchum said they were as back

The group typically has fundraisers throughout the year to raise money for the event, but since Covid, they have not had the usual crab feed or other events, Mitchum said. But the jail is one way to raise money with participants “arrested” and held for “bail” for about 10 or 15 minutes. The money raised is going directly back into the Fiesta Days event. Saturday had a Country and Western theme with bands Smokin Jokers, Locked-N-Loaded and California Cowboys playing tunes. “We arrest the band members all day long and they get bailed out,” Mitchum said. The event had a few new food vendors, including California Gold See Fiesta, Page A10

Shifting stories on Uvalde attack trouble officials The Washington Post UVALDE, Texas — Grieving parents and loved ones began making plans to bury the dead, while demands for accountability increased Saturday after officials acknowledged law enforcement officers improperly waited an excruciatingly long time before rushing the classroom where a gunman murdered 19 children and two teachers. Rogelio M. Muñoz, a former city council member who left the council due to term limits, said in an interview on Saturday morning that

what the community had learned so far about the police response is “very concerning.” Texas authorities made clear on Friday that many things went wrong earlier in the week. Muñoz criticized the Texas Department of Public Safety for its shifting accounts of what occurred at the school on Tuesday, but he cautioned against making too many conclusions. “The facts are still developing and it’s hard to assess blame or judgment on anybody when we don’t know all the facts,” he said. State Sen. Roland Guti-

errez, a Democrat who represents Uvalde, said, “We’re all angry. Law enforcement’s angry,” during an interview with CNN on Saturday
