TRAVIS AIR FORCE BASE — Anyone near the Travis Air Force Base on Saturday couldn’t fail to notice the activity at the base. Taking to the skies are two demonstration flight teams led by women for the annual Wings Over Solano open house air show along with several other aerial displays. The first demonstration Saturday was an F-35 demonstration
with Maj. Kristen “Beo” Wolfe. Wolfe became the first U.S. Air Force female F-35A Demonstration Team commander in 2020. The F-35A DemMAJ. WOLFE onstration Team is composed of approximately 15 active-duty maintenance and support airmen assigned to 388th Fighter Wing.
Flying is a passion for her that really took off once she went into the military. “I went straight to the U.S. Air Force Reserve Officer Training Program at the University of Alabama,” she said Saturday. TRAVIS AIR FORCE BASE — Haley Brunkal took an unfamiliar step out of a C-17 Friday morning, but landed on familiar ground. In fact, her landing zone was very much like home. “It was surreal,” said Brunkal, a 2019 Vacaville High graduate whose father flew C-5s out of Travis Air Force Base for 25 years. Brunkal, a junior at the U.S. Air Force Academy, has taken 427 jumps, but the jump on rehearsal day to the Wings over Solano air show and open house was her first demon-

descended with a giant American flag. Brunkal brought the Air Force flag down with her. Chase, despite completing his 721st skydive, also experienced a first. “It was pretty cool . . . . I have never been that close to another plane before,” Chase said about his jump while Vicky Benzing was practicing some of her aerobatic maneuvers in her bright red, vintage 1940 Boeing Stearman. It seemed at times Chase could just climb into the World War II trainer. Benzing put on quite a show for the media and aviation enthusiasts who attended the rehearsal event, displaying loops and spirals and See Jumps, Page A9

A number of residents in the area of concern have spoken at past council meetings, and a group organized a protest at the site.
