Atmospheric river rolls into Bay Area Tribune Content Agency A weather front spread welcome showers across the drought-parched Bay Area on Sunday morning, with meteorologists saying it was just a preview of what’s to come – paving the way for a much more intense atmospheric river storm expected to drench the region and bring heavy snowfall to the Sierra. Jeff Lorber, a meteorologist with the Weather National Service’sBay Area office, said Sunday morning that the most of the rain so far had fallen in the North Bay valleys, which received around half an inch overnight. He said the highest totals were in the coastal mountains in Marin and Sonoma counties, which saw about 1.5 to 2 inches. The immediate Bay Area totals were around a tenth of an inch, according to Lorber. “As the front moves

southwards to the immediate Bay Area, rainfall totals will pick up in San Francisco, Oakland and San Jose,” he said. “We do expect to see some light to moderate rain throughout the day.” Lorber said the front would “kind of stall later today over the Bay Area,” but pick up some energy later Sunday afternoon and evening, with higher rainfall totals overnight into Monday morning. Normal rainfall for the month of December in San Francisco is 4.14 inches, and forecasting site Accuweather reported that the area could reach that amount in just 48 hours. But Lorber was not so optimistic. “I’m not sure we’ll quite reach the monthly rainfall normal in this system alone,” he said. The weather service estimated San Francisco would receive about 1.5 to 2 inches into See River, Page A8

G-7 warns Russia over Ukraine Tribune Content Agency Foreign ministers from the Group of Seven nations on Sunday warned Russia to de-escalate its activities around Ukraine face “massive or consequences.” In a joint statement, the ministers said they were “united in our condemnation of Russia’s military build-up and aggressive rhetoric towards Ukraine.” “We call on Russia to de-escalate, pursue diplomatic channels, and abide by its international

commitments on transparency of military activities,” the ministers said in the statement after a meeting in Liverpool, England. While President Joe Biden seeks to strengthen diplomatic pressure and pump up the rhetoric, options for squeezing the Kremlin financially, economically and militarily face their own challenges. The G-7 statement didn’t spell out which consequences Russia might face. The U.S. and European allies are weighing See Russia, Page A8

SUISUN CITY — Members of the Wednesday Club traveled back in time last week for their December luncheon. A Dickens theme, originally planned for December 2020, became a celebration of surviving the pandemic as well as a chance to commemorate the Christmas season. Georgia Hanson signed on to lead the luncheon committee prior to the Covid-19 outbreak. “I thought a Dickens theme would be fun, but when it didn’t happen because of Covid we rolled the year’s luncheon over to this year,” she shared in an email. “It gave me more than a year to think about it, research it, con my friends, family and Wednesday Club members into being the characters and make all the costumes, props, toys, ornaments and decorations that would befit something so grand,” she wrote. “As it evolved, I wanted it to be a celebration of surviving the pandemic. When you have women in your club that are all in their 60s, 70s and 80s, it was pretty scary for most of us.” Hanson’s sister Melody Nix sewed costumes for the luncheon, ans designed and printed all the place cards, signage and business

The club’s large membership offered a great cast. Hanson said she cast the character according to who best fit the bill. Some husbands of club members even fell into the mix. Hanson’s daughter from Shasta City and a friend from Sparks, Nevada, traveled to join in the fun. The carol singers started on the front lawn in front of the clubhouse

and strolled into the building’s ballroom area to finish their selection of songs. There were 34 characters from the book “A Christmas Carol” plus a fun mix of scullery maids, chimney sweeps, shoppers and a barmaid at The Olde Swig & Pig Pub. “It takes a good mix of sights, sounds and smells to create the right feeling for London See Dickens, Page A8

Death toll now above 80 in Kentucky tornadoes, Gov. Beshear says Tribune Content Agency LEXINGTON, Ky. — Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear said Sunday the number of people killed by a deadly series of tornadoes that tore through Western Kentucky Friday and Saturday is now above 80 and will likely climb to 100. “Right now, we are hoping for miracles,” Beshear said on NBC’s “Meet the Press” on Sunday. Beshear made a host of national media appearances on Sunday morning, less than 48 hours after at least four tornadoes flattened entire towns in Western Kentucky, killing at least 80 and knocking out power to more than 77,000 customers. “This is the deadliest tornado event we

I think it’s going to be the longest and deadliest tornado event in U.S. history. We know that one of these tornadoes was on the ground over 227 miles,” Beshear said on CNN’s “State of the Union.” That tornado

was on the ground in Kentucky for over 200 miles, Beshear said. Some of the confirmed casualties were children, Beshear said on CBS’ “Face the Nation with Margaret Brennan.” “I know we’ve lost a

number of kids. I know we lost a 3-year-old in Graves County, too. I think we lost maybe a 5-yearold in the Muhlenberg County. Death and this ... tornado didn’t discriminate against anybody in its path, even if they were trying to be safe again, just . . . like nothing we’ve ever seen before.” Getting an accurate count of the number of people who have been killed will take time because search and rescue efforts are ongoing, he said on CNN. “It’s going to take us time,” Beshear said. “I mean, you think you would go door to door to check on people and see if they’re OK. There are no doors. The question is, is somebody in the rubble of thousands upon thousands of structures? I mean, it is

devastating.” Federal Emergency Management Agency Administrator Deanna Criswell told CNN’s “State of the Union” FEMA search and rescue teams were in Kentucky and helping with recovery efforts. “They arrived through the day yesterday. They’re going to be able to assist

the localities with their ongoing rescue efforts. And so I think that we’re – there is still hope, and we should continue to try to find as many people as we can.” Criswell said early December tornadoes are not uncommon. But it was the strength of the See Storm, Page A8
