FAIRFIELD — The final night of Hanukkah was ushered in Sunday with illumination from a large jelly bean-filled menorah at Jelly Belly Candy Company. Jelly Belly for the past seven days has been filling the arms of the menorah with jelly beans and keeping the fire lit in honor of Hanukkah. This was the 12th Annual Hanukkah Winter Wonderland celebration at Jelly Belly. The purpose of Hanukkah, which is observed for eight nights and days, is a celebration of miracles. It commemorates the rededication of the Holy Temple in Jerusalem at the time of the Maccabean revolt against the Seleucid Empire. It is observed by lighting a Hanukkah menorah, one additional candle each night. “Our jelly beans became

Jelly Belly since 2010 has been one of the eight places around the area to celebrate Hanukkah. Along with the lighting of the menorah was singing, entertainment from a juggler and a small

parade of cars with menorah lights on top. This year they had the Jelly Belly train decorated with Happy Hanukkah flags and it took visitors on a ride around the parking lot. Inside was a pop-up deli with food that included latfkus and sandwiches. Children got to decorate little edible menorahs and listen to singing. “Hanukkah means education,” Zaklos said. “We hope that by doing this with Jelly Belly, it is a good association for the children.” Zaklos said he thought it was wonderful to be together again after that past year of being apart. The 2020 Jelly Belly Hanukkah celebration was just three people to light the menorah, which was aired over YouTube and Facebook. “As human beings we are like candles: We need to share each other’s light,” Zaklos said. “It is fun,” said Susan Cohen See Jelly, Page A7

Artisans bring Olde Tyme Christmas Faire to life during seasonal celebration Jocelyne von Strong jocelyne.vonstrong@ mcnaughton.media

RIO VISTA — The 13th annual Olde Tyme Christmas Faire is a feast for the eyes. Local artisans from across Solano County congregate each year for this annual fundraiser for the Rio Vista Museum. Quilts, jewelry, baked goods, handmade cards and even a local author brought their wares this weekend for purchase during the two-day affair. The museum receives its income from booth sales, a bake sale and a prize drawing that takes place Sunday at the end of the event. If supporting local artisans is a goal, the Olde Tyme Christmas Faire is a great place to accomplish it. Jewelry, scented candles, local honey and beeswax

items, handmade Christmas ornaments, custom gifts and even succulent arrangements are available for purchase. If someone on your Christmas list is a bookworm, consider some of the titles from local author Peter Bradbury. He has a table this year with local thrillers, such as “A Killing in Rio Vista” and “Stone Dead in Rio Vista.” His books are also available on Audible. Nora Crane has been active in both the planning and operations since the reboot of the Olde Tyme Christmas Faire. “They used to hold something similar years ago, for about three years and then stopped for quite a few years and then they started it back up,” Crane said. “It was a different kind of fair then. They were doing live things, like spinning the wool and building

gingerbread houses.” When ask how the people can support the Rio Vista Museum, Crane has a ready answer: “Just join.” “We have envelopes inside and it’s easy to join,” she said. “We have a newsletter that goes out four times a year, a Hamburger Feed for members and an annual meeting

with a guest speaker – usually in January.” The museum has another fundraiser, the Mad Hatters Tea Party, that’s scheduled April 2. The Old Tyme Christmas Faire continues from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Sunday. To connect with the Rio Vista Museum, visit www.riovistamuseum.

Bob Dole, the World War II veteran who recovered from nearfatal wounds to become the U.S. Senate Republican leader and a three-time presidential candidate, has died. He was 98. Dole died Sunday morning in his sleep, according to a Twitter post by the Elizabeth Dole Foundation. He disclosed in February that he had state 4 lung cancer. Dole’s loss to Democrat Bill Clinton in the 1996 presidential election ended a political career that spanned more than four decades and took him from the legislature in Kansas to the innermost circles of power in Washington. Work crews complete I-80 bridge removal, reopen freeway Daily Republic Staff

drnews@dailyrepublic.net

FAIRFIELD — A 10-hour closure of both eastbound and westbound Interstate 80 in Fairfield ended on time Sunday as crews reopened the freeway to traffic. I-80 was shut down in both directions for about 10 hours starting at 11 p.m. Saturday. The freeway was open again at 9 a.m. Sunday. Crews overseen by the state Department of Transportation removed the old Highway 12 to eastbound I-80 connector bridge. The work is part of the Interstate 80/Interstate 680/Highway 12 Interchange Project. Kiewit, of Fairfield, is the contractor on this portion of the project – with a price tag of $61 million – the second package in the seven-phase $740 million project. The current project is funded through a combination of the State Transportation Improvement Program, voter-approved Senate Bill 1 funding and

area bridge tolls, Caltrans reports. Pedro Quintana, spokesman for Caltrans District 4 in the Bay Area, said last week Caltrans is about halfway through what’s designated as Package 2A with about $40 million spent so far during this phase. The next step is designed to ease congestion as travelers will be able to use separate lanes to Green Valley Road or to Interstate 80 on the new connector. Right now there is a single lane. “We will be working on the permanent eastbound Highway 12 connector to I-80,” Quintana told the Daily Republic last week. The full phase is expected to be completed in the winter of 2022. The connector bridge that came down was 406 feet long and was built in 1967, Quintana said. Work on the full interchange project started in June 2014. DeSilva Gates Construction of Dublin was the contractor for the See Reopen, Page A7
