49ers stumble 31-17, extend Levi’s losing streak Tribune Content Agency A month after narrowly losing to the Arizona Cardinals, the 49ers were humiliated by the Shorthanded Cardinals on Sunday at Levi’s Stadium. How did they get they stomped, 31-17, to a team playing without their MVP-candidate quarterback Kyler Murray, All-Pro wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins and All-Pro defensive end J.J. Watt? The short answer: Their defense played at a Pop Warner level against their Triple-A opponent. The 49ers were torched

by journeyman backup quarterback Colt McCoy, 35, and streamrolled by running back James Conner en route to their fifth straight loss at Levi’s, a defeat which dropped them to 3-5 with a home date against the Rams (7-1) up next. In other words: yikes. McCoy, who entered with an 8-22 career record and anemic 78.1 passer rating, completed 22 of 26 passes for 249 yards with a touchdown (119.4 rating). Meanwhile, Conner, who became Arizona’s do-everything back after Chase Edmonds exited with an injury

on Arizona’s first offensive play, did, well everything: He rushed for 96 yards, had 77 yards receiving and scored three touchdowns. The Cardinals led 31-7 midway through the third quarter, at which point they had 376 yards and were averaging 8.2 yards per play against a defense that specialized in missed tackles and blown assignments. The offense wasn’t as abysmal, but had two firsthalf turnovers which led to 10 points as the Cardinals raced to a 17-0 lead. The tone was set quickly. The

Cardinals took a 7-0 lead in the first quarter on a 58-yard drive set up by tight end George Kittle’s fumble at the end of an 18-yard completion. Arizona scored on a 13-yard run by Conner, who went untouched into the right corner after cornerback Emmanuel Moseley whiffed on the tackle. Arizona jumped ahead 14-0 on their next possession thanks to a flurry of 49ers’ errors. Their eight-play, 80-yard drive included a thirdand-18 conversion from their 12-yard line on which Conner caught a screen pass at the line

of scrimmage and juked linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair en route to a 21-yard gain. Three plays later, on third-and-9, defensive tackle Arik Armstead sacked McCoy, but his facemask penalty on the QB extended the drive. On the next snap, wide receiver Christian Kirk took a backfield pitch and fired an onthe-run, 33-yard completion to wideout Antoine Wesley, which set Conner’s 1-yard scoring run one play later. Arizona’s next score was set up by another turnover by See 49ers, Page B8

FAIRFIELD — A bilateral knee replacement about 11 years ago sent Carrie Reese to the gym for some pool therapy. There, she slipped on something and broke her wrist. Next up, was physical therapy. A woman there suggested Reese, who weighed about 285 pounds at the time, go to a gym. After a little ego bruising, Reese went to the gym. There, a trainer told Reese to try weightlifting. She did and lifted 280 pounds on her first lift. Reese stuck with it. Today, weighing about 120 pounds, the petite Reese was recently inducted into the World Association of Benchers and Deadlifters Hall of Fame. Reese bench pressed 88 pounds, raw, at the Phoenix-based competition. She deadlifted almost double her weight, picking up 226 pounds, raw. Prior to traveling there, Reese thought she might earn the Hall of Fame designation as much information about her was requested. Even more amazing, six months ago, Reese was only able to lift a broomstick after a laparotomy Oct. 31, 2020. Reese credits her coach, Eric Cranage, of Vacaville’s Old Skool Iron, for playing a big role in earning her the Hall of Fame. The pair began working together in May. “Carrie is one of the best examples of what you can

Kyle Larson is NASCAR’s 2021 Cup Series champion. He won Sunday’s race at Phoenix Raceway to clinch the title and record a 10-win season. Larson led 108 laps of the 312 lap race at the track in Avondale, Arizona. The finale pitted two powerhouse organizations against each other with two teams each from Joe Gibbs Racing and Hendrick Motorsports vying for the trophy. Their parity was evident, but Larson emerged as the most steady and dominant of the Championship 4. “I didn’t even think I’d be racing a Cup car a year and a half ago,” Larson said on NBC. “To win a championship is crazy.” The Championship 4 cars raced around each other for most of the final two stages. Gibbs driver Martin Truex Jr. won the first stage and caught a break pitting early when a caution flew with around 60 laps to go. As the other playoff leaders pitted, Truex restarted out front to hold the lead until See Larson, Page B8

And, she may even sing. “I consider the gym to be my own personal playground,” she said. Hard work has been part of her life since she was 9 and began doing housework. Reese saved her money and earned a master’s degree in nursing. When she saved enough money, Reese earned her law degree through night classes. Working as an attorney usually meant at least 12 hours a day at the office. Reese said would snack on what she could find. If there was a Monday

SAN FRANCISCO — Draymond Green couldn’t help but raise his hands to the sky and shimmy in celebration. He found his lob partner. In one motion, an airborne Gary Payton II secured Green’s line drive pass and slammed it home as the dagger Golden State had been seeking all evening to pull away from the one-win Rockets for their fourth straight blowout victory, 120107, Sunday. The latest highlight on the reel of Golden State’s newfound alley-ooper gave the Warriors their 11th and 12th points on a 15-0 run at the end of the third quarter that broke the game open for good. Houston was able to hang close into the third quarter

The very first day her doctors cleared her to start exercising again, she was back in the gym training with me to prepare for the world championships. In that time, we had added 121 pounds to her deadlift, and 23 pounds to her bench press.” Her consistent exercise and healthy diet have not only helped her to increase her

strength, but have helped increase bone density, improve balance and stability, and improve her cardiovascular health, which is as close to the fountain of youth as we can get, he wrote. For the elderly specifically, bone density and balance will deteriorate quickly without some source of daily exercise. Regular exercise will also improve mood and overall energy. Reese only takes one day a week off from the gym. She wakes up about 1:30 a.m. each day to get to the gym before the crowds arrive. She will spend hours there.
