Jerome was captured with general officers and was fortunate as he rode with them to Camp O’Donnell and avoided the physical perils of the now infamous Bataan Death March.

However, Jerome ended up in a group of 462 officers and men at the Umeda Bunsho Prisoner of War Camp near Osaka, Japan. Soon he was suffering from dysentery, colitis, malaria and malnutrition. He was placed in an area of the camp known as the hospital, but it was without beds or medicine.

From the book: “The men were generally dressed in tropical clothing and they were in Japan with winter coming on. No one had coats and the buildings were not heated. Meals consisted of rice and turnips.”

Jerome contracted terminal pneumonia and died Dec. 15, 1942.

His posthumous Silver Star medal citation read: “For gallantry in action on Bataan, Philippine Islands, on April 9, 1942.

A Buddhist priest took it upon himself to cremate the remains of the Allied servicemen in the Osaka POW camps. He created an altar to their memory, kept the cremated remains near the altar and prayed for the repose of their souls twice daily.

The 13th Armored Tank Division from Camp Beale, California, welded a framed picture of Jerome Sheldon on the steel side of a tank, which was then named “Fairfield” in his honor.

Jerome’s funeral back home took place Oct. 31, 1948. Warren Sheldon, then 12 years old, was in attendance. It was held at Hansen Funeral Home in Suisun City across from

the VFW building. Armed guards stood by Jerome’s urn. After the services, the procession proceeded up Main Street in Suisun, which turned into Union Avenue in Fairfield and made its way to the Suisun-Fairfield Cemetery.

Highway 40, now Interstate 80, went down Texas Street in those days and the procession crossed it at the courthouse. Sacramento to Oakland traffic was blocked for miles in both directions.

The book details the aftermath of Jerome’s death as Roy Sheldon battled the War Department over a life insurance claim for Jerome which was finally paid – a decade later. Roy died shortly afterward.

The annual Starbucks holiday cups have been released, and there’s not a Christmas tree or Santa icon to be found.

Cue the outrage – or not.

The cultural conversation around the seasonal cups has come a long way since 2015. That year, a self-described “evangelist” accused the coffee vessels of fomenting a new front in a “war on Christmas,” and right-wing outlets from Fox News to Breitbart amplified his claims. The allegation immediately fueled more mockery than sympathetic indignation.

Six years later, the release of the 2021 cups – replete with images of ribbons and gift tags – was met Thursday with gleeful witticisms about how this year’s battle to ruin the monumental Christian holiday could finally begin.

“BREAKING: Starbucks releases their

holiday cups” one person wrote on Twitter. “The first shots have been fired signaling the war on Christmas has begun.”

It’s no surprise that the Starbucks holiday designs

would spark dialogue.

SUISUN CITY — Suisun City’s Recreation Department seeks artists for its Winter Art Gala on Dec. 3.

The event will take place at the Joseph CommuA. Nelson nity Center, 611 Village Drive, in Suisun City.

The Recreation Department will provide a 10-foot by 10-foot area, along with a table and two chairs.

Artists are responsible for any and all items needed to display their art in the space allotted and are responsible for taking the same items home. Artists can arrive at 4 p.m.

Dec. 3 to set up their booth for Gala event.

All artists applying for space are asked to donate a piece of art to the auction, which will directly benefit local public art programming, in lieu of a registration fee.

The event gets underway on the vening with a no-host bar at 5:30 p.m. followed by dinner at 6:30 p.m.

Vaccine holdouts undermine Covid-19 battle

A

s a high school quarterback in Chico who later played for Butte College and starred for the University of California, Aaron Rodgers yearned to be drafted by his favorite pro team, the San Francisco 49ers.

However, the 49ers opted for Alex Smith in the 2005 draft and Rodgers went, instead, to the Green Bay Packers.

The rest is football legend. Rodgers became one of the greatest NFL quarterbacks of all time and at 37, the gray-bearded Rodgers is still playing winning football as the Packers dominate their division with one of the league’s best records.

However, Rodgers didn’t play Sunday’s game against the Kansas City Chiefs because he tested positive for Covid-19 and had to go into quarantine.

Dan Walters That would appear to be just an unfortunate turn of fate. In fact, the mayor of Los Angeles, Eric Garcetti, also tested positive while attending a global climate change conference in Glasgow and also was confined in quarantine.

However, Garcetti had been vaccinated against the disease while Rodgers had not, even though in August, he responded to a reporter’s question by saying, “I’ve been immunized.”

Technically, it may not have been a lie, but it was certainly misleading, particularly since he added, “There’s guys on the team that haven’t been vaccinated. I think it’s a personal decision.

I’m not going to judge those guys.”

The phrase “those guys” implied that he was not one of the unvaccinated players when he was one of them. It also turned out that Rodgers had asked the NFL Players Association to grant him vaccinated status because his personal homeopathic doctor had administered treatments to raise his antibody levels.

For months, then, Rodgers was living a lie and putting others at risk of being exposed to Covid-19. He’s a high-profile example of the vaccine refusniks who undermine humankind’s best hope of taming a pandemic that’s already claimed 750,000 lives in the U.S. and 5 million worldwide.

What gives with these people, anyway? Why are they risking not only their own lives but those of others by shunning the jab?

Polling by the Kaiser Family Foundation has found that about 20% of adults say they definitely will not get vaccinated unless required by their employers, and about 30% of parents say they won’t have their children vaccinated.

There’s no single reason why tens of millions of Americans evade opportunities to be vaccinated. For some it’s political; if Democrats advocate vaccination, some Republicans believe it’s their duty to resist. In fact, a much higher percentage of Democrats are vaccinated than Republicans.

For other holdouts, it may be a fear of the needle, a false belief that the vaccine is dangerous, as some social media pundits proclaim, or simple footdragging.

The unvaccinated, however, are feeling the squeeze as employers increasingly threaten to fire workers who lack proof of vaccination. One of the odder phenomena is the refusal of many public safety workers such as police officers, firefighters, prison guards and even nurses to be vaccinated.

Bizarrely, when a federal judge ordered that prison workers be vaccinated to protect inmates’ health, Gov. Gavin Newsom’s administration opposed the order even as the governor was personally promoting universal vaccination.

If the vaccine holdouts continue to hold out, and thus endanger themselves and their families, we will soon see a kind of apartheid in which they cannot work, cannot enter restaurants or other businesses and will disproportionately be stricken with Covid-19 and hospitalized.

Frankly, they won’t deserve sympathy from the rest of us. As the Bible says, “whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.”

Cancel culture is dangerous

because it promotes a simplistic worldview and the idea that a person’s faults define them. Once a person is canceled, their opportunities to make amends are scarce. Canceling makes no room for discussion or investigation of the matter, even if it is necessary.

The Constitution, specifically the First Amendment, helps us overcome cancel culture and censorship because it protects our freedom of speech, religion and the press.

Censorship is historically associated with totalitarianism because in the past, many totalitarian rulers used censorship as a means to control and manage all aspects of life. For instance, in 1929 Mussolini established a High Commission for the press. Although it was said not to interfere with freedom of the press, the exception was, “Any activity contrary to the national interest.”

As a constitutional federal republic that advocates for fundamental human rights, we must lower the intolerant climate caused by censorship and cancel culture. The only way we will grow as a society is through civilly exchanging opinions and collectively working toward a shared goal.

People who partake in censorship and cancel culture support actions that align with authoritarian dictatorship, something we can not allow ourselves to become. By uniting in the name of the Constitution, common good, and law, we can build a better America.

Two nights later, the Suisun Valley Vintners and Growers Association had its annual dinner. The mood was ebullient.

One question hangs over all observers. As many council members themselves wondered out loud, “How did this happen?” Good question.

I hold the consultant innocent.

The consultant’s spokeswoman is experienced, as is her firm. I’m sure a consultant would never independently suggest an annexation of prime agricultural land for housing.

It’s a no-no at the state level, it goes against county policy and against the entire thrust of city actions for decades. Likewise, the city manager, Stefan Chatwin, would never do something this audacious without council direction.

This leads to the council itself.

Did somebody (or somebodies) on the council suggest that annexations of a portion of Suisun Valley should be included in all the options – and that it be done quietly?

So the council will go back to work with a new direction – work on the interior of the city. And for now, it’s peace in the valley.

“I’ve been reading books my whole life,” Richmond said. “I didn’t grow up among writers. My grandfather loved to read and I grew up reading the Bible and Bible stories.”

Claire Splan shared her story and her awardwinning “California Month-By-Month Gardening” and “California Fruit and Vegetable Gardening.” She is currently working on a narrative nonfiction book about a 1901 shipwreck.

“Librarians always step up to a segment of the community that doesn’t regularly get served,” Splan said. “One of my first jobs was as a librarian.”

Alexandra Boiger was also present at the luncheon. She is a creator and illustrator of the New York Times bestselling “Max and Marla” children’s books.

“We all are more than one story and we are a ripple effect to our next generation,” Boiger said.

“It’s important for children to see themselves in every book so they can grow up to tell their own story.”

Alice Wilson-Fried shared her story and writings. She now lives in Vacaville after growing

Cherelyn Ellington Hunt, who serves as the adult literacy services manager, talked about the struggles through Covid and the fight for literacy in Solano County.

Literacy struggles continue in the county and the state continues to have the lowest literacy rate in the country.

“Many libraries are having to look at a total rebuild,” Hunt said. “We were able to pivot hard into Zoom teaching. The thing that helped us through this was relationships that we built, and the students are coming back to the library.”

Teresa Lavell, the Reach Out and Read coordinator, said that 310,000 books have been distributed throughout the community.

“We’ve been able to reach a community that is often unreachable,” Lavell said.

Stevens summed up the purpose of the Authors Luncheon in her opening statement on the program.

“The job and benefits of literacy cannot be underestimated,” Shevens wrote. “From Reach Out and Read to Tutor.com and many others, the literacy program of Solano County Library help to improve the lives and fortunes of Solano County citizens every day. Thank you for partnering with us to continue to make this happen.”

Kurt Arnold, a Houston trial lawyer who specializes in catastrophic personal injury cases, said he anticipates lawsuits arising from the Astroworld tragedy to be wide-ranging in their targets.

“What’s unique in this situation is that there was prior notice; this wasn’t a split-second situation like a sudden stage collapse,” he said about the chaotic tone of the day. “When you look at the trampling at the barricade . . . it’s just crazy.”

Live Nation will be the biggest target but hardly the only one, he said. The entertainment giant has been on the defensive before, with a history of federal safety complaints.

clear how many of the cries Scott heard, given that he was onstage and wearing in-ear monitors.

So why aren’t Golden Staters reaping more reward for their adherence to health guidance while the virus gives freewheeling Dixie a break?

“You’re paying for your success, which is weird,” Mokdad said.

“You succeed in controlling the virus, and now you’re having infections.”

But he and other health experts say it’s not because the health guidance isn’t sound. Outbreaks burn out once the virus runs out of enough new people without immunity to infect. And people can gain immunity both from infection recovery and vaccines.

With higher vaccination levels than in the Southeast, California saw a smaller wave of cases over the summer as the delta variant ripped through the country, mostly infecting those who hadn’t been vaccinated. Now that they’ve recovered,

they have immunity too, cutting off avenues for the virus to spread.

“These regions are now being partly protected by high prior infection rates,” said Dr. Bob Wachter, chair of the medical department at the University of California-San Francisco. “But these people whose immunity comes from Covid-19 are not very well protected, and their immunity will wane with time.”

While California’s vaccination rate compares well with many other states, it still isn’t enough to snuff outbreaks. Currently 62% of California’s total population is fully vaccinated, compared with 60% in Florida, 54% in Texas, 49% in Georgia, 48% in Louisiana, 46% in Mississippi and 45% in Alabama. That still leaves more than one in three Californians unvaccinated.

In California, indoor face mask orders imposed over the summer for schools statewide and for other public buildings in the Bay Area and Los Angeles also helped keep the virus in check. But the state’s unvaccinated – especially those who haven’t been infected – remain vulnerable.

States in the Southeast hammered with big summer case surges now are faring better simply

because, with their combination of vaccinations and infections, they have fewer left who are susceptible to the virus than in California, Mokdad said.

But “they got there at a heavy price.”

Other factors also are in play. The Southeast’s hot, humid summers drive people to the airconditioned indoors where the virus spreads easily, while Californians enjoy moderate weather out in the surf and sand.

But the autumn chill is now bringing Californians inside, too.

What’s more, immunity through vaccination or infection wanes over time. Californians who were quick to line up for vaccines early in the spring are now wondering how long their protection will last.

Booster shots have been authorized mostly for older adults, people with weakened immunity or those with high exposure risk, which will spur their protection from infection. But among those 65 and older, just 30% in California got the extra shot, similar to the 29% in Texas and 27% in Florida.

Mokdad said immunizing newly eligible kids and unvaccinated adults, giving booster shots and encouraging or requiring mask wearing can blunt a projected winter rise in infections.

“If you just want to head over for a funeral or to visit someone in the hospital, the expectation is you’re going to have to pay $200 to have a PCR test to return to Canada,” he said. “I think for most that’s going to be a deal killer.”

Canada and the United States closed their land border to nonessential travel in March 2020.

Trade and the movement of essential workers continued. The curbs strained personal relationships, hit the tourism industry and upended life in border communities in ways large and small.

Canadians initially backed the restrictions as they watched the cases of covid-19 surge south of the border. But as one month turned to six and then 12, pres-

sure mounted among some lawmakers, business groups and residents in both countries to begin relaxing the controls.

Canada welcomed fully vaccinated Americans in August. But United States the declined to reciprocate, a decision that deepened frustration, particularly in communities reliant on day-trippers, shoppers or tourism. (The United States always allowed Canadians to enter by air for nonessential travel.)

Land traffic into Canada this year is higher than it was in 2020 but remains below pre-pandemic levels.

In 2019, about 15 million tourists visited Canada from the United States, according to Statistics Canada. They made up two-thirds of Canada’s tourist arrivals.

most recent date for which data is available, there were an average of roughly 167,500 noncommercial crossings per week, according to the Canada Border Services Agency. That’s 15% of the average volume over the same period in 2019.

“Even though we did in early August open up the borders to American visitors . . . we definitely did not see any huge impact or a real change,” said Bill Stewart, the executive director of the 1000 Islands Chamber of Commerce in Gananoque, Ontario.

Many of the Americans who have crossed have been people with relatives or cottages in Canada, he said; far fewer have been day-trippers. He attributed this primarily to the testing requirement but also said some people might have firmed up their holiday plans well before Canada announced it was easing the curbs on its side.

“Our customers have shared with us that our cups and their first sip of peppermint mocha are so special and mark the beginning of holiday season,” the company said in a statement. “Starbucks holiday cups are thoughtfully designed each year, and this year are wrapped up like gifts for the holidays – with festive colors of red, green and white and touches of lilac.”

Never mind, of course, that Jesus Christ has not been depicted on any holiday cup since Starbucks debuted the series in 1997.

Starbucks. Most Christians, meanwhile, are not actually mad.

Otherwise, Starbucks escapes another holiday season unscathed.

49ers stumble 31-17, extend Levi’s losing streak Tribune Content Agency A month after narrowly losing to the Arizona Cardinals, the 49ers were humiliated by the Shorthanded Cardinals on Sunday at Levi’s Stadium.

How did they get they stomped, 31-17, to a team playing without their MVP-candidate quarterback Kyler Murray, All-Pro wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins and All-Pro defensive end J.J. Watt? The short answer: Their defense played at a Pop Warner level against their Triple-A opponent.

The 49ers were torched

by journeyman backup quarterback Colt McCoy, 35, and streamrolled by running back James Conner en route to their fifth straight loss at Levi’s, a defeat which dropped them to 3-5 with a home date against the Rams (7-1) up next.

In other words: yikes.

McCoy, who entered with an 8-22 career record and anemic 78.1 passer rating, completed 22 of 26 passes for 249 yards with a touchdown (119.4 rating). Meanwhile, Conner, who became Arizona’s do-everything back after Chase Edmonds exited with an injury

on Arizona’s first offensive play, did, well everything: He rushed for 96 yards, had 77 yards receiving and scored three touchdowns.

The Cardinals led 31-7 midway through the third quarter, at which point they had 376 yards and were averaging 8.2 yards per play against a defense that specialized in missed tackles and blown assignments. The offense wasn’t as abysmal, but had two firsthalf turnovers which led to 10 points as the Cardinals raced to a 17-0 lead.

Next up, was physical therapy. A woman there suggested Reese, who weighed about 285 pounds at the time, go to a gym.

After a little ego bruising, Reese went to the gym. There, a trainer told Reese to try weightlifting.

She did and lifted 280 pounds on her first lift.

Reese stuck with it.

Today, weighing about 120 pounds, the petite Reese was recently inducted into the World Association of Benchers and Deadlifters Hall of Fame.

Reese bench pressed 88 pounds, raw, at the Phoenix-based competition. She deadlifted almost double her weight, picking up 226 pounds, raw.

Prior to traveling there, Reese thought she might earn the Hall of Fame designation as much information about her was requested.

Even more amazing, six months ago, Reese was only able to lift a broomstick after a laparotomy Oct. 31, 2020.

Reese credits her coach, Eric Cranage, of Vacaville’s Old Skool Iron, for playing a big role in earning her the Hall of Fame. The pair began working together in May. “Carrie is one of the best examples of what you can

Reese only takes one day a week off from the gym. She wakes up about 1:30 a.m. each day to get to the gym before the crowds arrive. She will spend hours there.

Turn a good pumpkin into a Great Pumpkin with these 4 recipes

1 teaspoon salt, divided 1 ½ pounds ground beef ¾ cup finely chopped onion 1 small green pepper, chopped 1 ½ cups cooked rice 1 (8-ounce) can tomato sauce ½ cup finely chopped fully cooked ham or sausage 2 eggs, beaten 1 garlic clove, minced 1 teaspoon dried oregano ½ teaspoon pepper ½ teaspoon cider vinegar Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Wash pumpkin and cut out a 6-inch lid, as you would with a jack-o’-lantern. Discard seeds and loose fibers from inside. Place pumpkin in a large Dutch oven. Fill Dutch oven with boiling water to a depth of 6 inches; add ½ teaspoon salt.

Cover and simmer for 30 minutes or until the pumpkin is almost tender but holds its shape. Carefully remove and drain well; pat dry.

In a large skillet, cook the beef, onion and green pepper over medium heat until meat is no longer pink and vegetables are tender; drain well. Cool slightly; place in a large bowl. Add rice, tomato sauce, ham, eggs, garlic, oregano, pepper, vinegar and the remaining ½ teaspoon salt. Stir to combine thoroughly.

Place pumpkin in a shallow, sturdy baking pan. Firmly pack beef mixture into pumpkin; replace top.

Bake for 1 hour. Let stand for 10 minutes. Remove the top; if desired, use paper towel to remove excess moisture from top of meat.

Slice pumpkin into wedges.

umpkins aren’t just meant for pie or playful evisceration. They are also a vegetable, a squash, and can therefore be eaten.

The question is: How? How to best eat a pumpkin?

The other questions is: Why? Pumpkins don’t taste particularly good. Why would you want to eat them?

The answer is: Not all pumpkins are created equal. Smaller pumpkins are often delicious and are reminiscent of other winter squash. It’s the larger jack-o’-lantern type of pumpkins that give all the other pumpkins a bad reputation, at least in terms of texture and flavor.

So I decided to do something about it. I decided to take some pumpkins, stuff them full of other things, and then roast them.

It’s not an idea I had by myself. In 2010, the highly regarded food writer Dorie Greenspan included a recipe for stuffed pumpkin in her cookbook “Around My French Table,” and they have been a popular dish since then.

So I started with Greenspan’s groundbreaking recipe – though the idea was not original with her, either; people have been stuffing pumpkins for decades.

As with three of the recipes I made, I used pie pumpkins for this dish. Pie or sugar pumpkins, which are always labeled such, have the best flavor of all pumpkins. They are sweet, but only a little, and the mild sweetness merely adds a hint of intrigue to a savory dish.

Each of the recipes uses a starch to help fill out the pumpkin. In Greenspan’s inelegantly named Pumpkin Stuffed With Everything Good, the starch is stale bread. It is used as the foundation for layers of other flavors: cheese, garlic, bacon or sausage – optional, if you want to keep it vegetarian – scallions, thyme, cream and a touch of nutmeg.

Those ingredients are satisfying enough as they are, but don’t forget the additional taste of pumpkin. A chunk of pumpkin in every bite makes a good meal better.

Next, I roasted a pumpkin stuffed with shepherd’s pie.

That’s really all you need to know: It’s shepherd’s pie inside a roasted pumpkin. If you kind of squint your taste buds, it is somewhat like eating moussaka, with pumpkin replacing the eggplant. And while pumpkin tastes nothing at all like eggplant, it also kind of does.

I used ground beef for my shepherd’s pie, but ground lamb, I imagine, would be just as good.

The next dish I made uses a large pumpkin – or at least large for a pie pumpkin – five or six pounds. It’s good for a substantial meal, which is why it’s called Stuffed Pumpkin Dinner.

People who are tired of turkey have been known to make it for Thanksgiving.

The starch this time is rice (in the shepherd’s pie recipe, it is mashed potatoes). The rice is mixed with ground beef, onions, green pepper and tomato sauce, so basically it is a chopped-up stuffed pepper stuffed into a pumpkin, with a few twists.

The biggest twist is the way it is cooked. Because the pumpkin is larger, the stuffing inside will be overcooked by the time the pumpkin is cooked through.

So to remedy that, you steam the pumpkin for 30 minutes to soften the exterior before stuffing and baking it.

It works like a charm.

My favorite of the four stuffed-pumpkin dishes did not use pie pumpkins; it used mini pumpkins, which are just a

These are stuffed with baby kale, breadcrumbs (that’s the starch), cheese, scallions, garlic, pine nuts and more, all moistened (or more) with heavy cream. The small pumpkins are wonderfully tender when cooked, and a little sweet. Or at least they aren’t bitter.

Whatever. They taste wonderful, a little bit nutty, with the unbeatable combination of kale (or spinach, if you prefer), cheese and cream. The pine nuts add a toasty crunch.

Most people use mini pumpkins for decoration. But if you stuff a few and roast them, you’ll have a side dish worth celebrating at the most celebratory time of the year.

PUMPKIN STUFFED WITH EVERYTHING GOOD Makes 2 to 4 servings 1 pumpkin, about 3 pounds Salt and freshly ground pepper ¼ pound stale bread, thinly sliced and cut into ½-inch chunks ¼ pound cheese, such as Gruyère, Emmenthaler, cheddar, or a combination, cut into ½-inch chunks 2 garlic cloves, finely chopped 4 slices bacon, cooked until crisp, drained, and chopped ¼ cup snipped fresh chives or sliced scallions 1 tablespoon minced fresh thyme 1 ⁄3 cup heavy cream Pinch of freshly grated nutmeg Center a rack in the oven and preheat to 350 degrees. Line a baking sheet with a silicone baking mat or parchment.

Using a very sturdy knife – and caution – cut a cap out of the top of the pumpkin as you would a jack-o’lantern. You want to cut off enough of the top to make it easy for you to work inside the pumpkin. Clear away the seeds and strings from the cap and from inside the pumpkin. Season the inside of the pumpkin generously with salt and pepper, and put it on the prepared baking sheet.

Toss the bread, cheese, garlic, bacon, chives (or scallions) and

thyme together in a bowl. Season with pepper (add salt, if you are not using the bacon) and pack the mix into the pumpkin. The pumpkin should be well filled; you may have too much mix, or too little. Stir the cream with the nutmeg and some salt and pepper and pour it into the pumpkin.

Put the cap in place and bake the pumpkin for about 2 hours – check after 90 minutes – or until everything inside the pumpkin is bubbling and the flesh of the pumpkin is tender enough to be pierced easily with the tip of a knife. Remove the cap during the last 20 minutes or so, so that the liquid can bake away and the top of the stuffing can brown a little.

When the pumpkin is ready, bring it to the table with care – it’s heavy, hot and wobbly.

Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

Cover potatoes with water in a large saucepan. Bring to a boil, then reduce to a simmer and cook until

tender, about 15 minutes.

Cut top of pumpkin to create a lid, as you would with jack-o’-lanterns. Clean out seeds with a spoon, scraping the insides down to the pulp. Set aside.

While potatoes are cooking, brown meat in large pan over medium heat, breaking meat up with a spoon, until meat is cooked through, 3 to 5 minutes. Remove from heat and drain, reserving 2 tablespoons fat.

Add reserved fat back to pan, and heat on medium. Add onion, mushroom (if using) and ¼ teaspoon salt, and sauté until softened, about 5 minutes. Stir in flour and tomato paste and cook, stirring, until flour is incorporated, about 1 minute.

Whisk in broth, thyme and Worcestershire sauce into onion mixture, scraping pan as you go, and bring to a simmer. Return meat to pan and cook over medium-low heat until sauce is thickened, about 6 to 8 minutes. Test for flavor and add salt and pepper to taste. Add peas and carrots into mixture, if using.

Drain potatoes, return to hot pot and mash until smooth. Stir in butter, then half-and-half. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

Rub the inside of the pumpkins with salt. Fill pumpkins 2⁄3 full with meat mixture. Fill pumpkins to bottom of opening with mashed potatoes. Replace tops of pumpkins. Place pumpkins on prepared baking sheet.

Bake in oven for approximately 90 minutes or until pumpkin “gives” when you squeeze the sides. It may take longer than 90 minutes depending on the size of the pumpkin.

If you would like to brown the mashed potatoes, broil them for 3 to 5 minutes with the pumpkin lid removed.

Wash the pumpkins. With a small, sharp knife, remove the tops as if for a jack-o’-lantern. Scoop out the seeds and stringy insides with a spoon, leaving the flesh intact.

Rinse, then rub with a pinch of salt and a few grinds of pepper.

Melt the butter in a sauté pan over medium heat, add the scallions and cook for a few minutes.

Add the garlic and sauté another minute or so, until fragrant. Add the kale and cook until it just wilts, about 3 or 4 minutes. Remove from heat, stir in the lemon juice and transfer to a bowl.

Add the breadcrumbs, cheese, pine nuts, nutmeg, red pepper flakes, ¼ teaspoon salt and 1⁄8 teaspoon black pepper. Mix well, then stir in cream.

Divide the filling into the pumpkins and replace the tops. Line a baking dish with parchment paper (or brush with 1 tablespoon olive oil) and arrange the filled pumpkins in the dish.

Bake for 1 hour, watching to make sure the tops don’t brown too much. Test the pumpkins by piercing with a fork. If the skin doesn’t pierce easily, remove the tops and bake an additional 15 to 20 minutes.

Replace the tops and serve hot.

4 ways to get better returns than CDs

Investing in dividend-paying stocks carries the potential to earn a yield higher than CDs, but there’s a real risk you could lose your principal, too.

f you’re looking for a safe place to store your money while earning a return, you might be thinking about opening a certificate of deposit.

A CD is similar to a traditional savings account, but your bank will pay you a higher interest rate in exchange for locking your funds away for a set amount of time. The catch for that extra earning potential?

Most CDs will charge you a penalty if you need your money before the end of your term.

Right now, though, that extra earning potential isn’t all that much to celebrate. The best rates on 3-year CDs are sitting around 1%, which means your money will be tied up for a long time with limited benefits.

“I tend to shy away from CDs in today’s environment since the interest rates on these are not materially higher than money market and other deposit accounts,” says Andrew Feldman, CFP, president of Illinois-based AJ Feldman Financial. “And most CDs lock up your funds and are not liquid.”

Depending on your financial goals and your risk tolerance, CDs might still make sense.

However, there are other options to minimize your risk and maximize your earnings.

1. Dividend-paying stocks Some companies pay out portions of their profits to shareholders on a regular basis.

Major names like Home Depot and Starbucks pay dividends that beat average CD rates.

Some companies have a long history of raising dividends, too.

For example, Procter & Gamble has increased its dividend for 65 years in a row.

Investing in dividend-paying stocks carries the potential to earn a yield higher than CDs, but there’s a real risk you could lose your principal, too. Buy a stock at $20 per share today, and it could be worth $15 per share six months from now.

Kimberly Foss, president of Empyrion Wealth Management in Roseville, California, says because stocks can come with such risk, you have to ask yourself how much risk you’re willing to take. While that risk can be significant in the short term, it becomes lower in the long term. That’s why you should plan to hold on to any stocks for a period of at least

three to eight years.

Many financial advisors recommend against picking individual stocks. Mari Adam, senior wealth advisor with Mercer Advisors, says if you take this option, it’s best to spread your risk among a couple of stocks and other investing vehicles.

“You don’t want to put all of your short- or mid-term cash in just one stock or one alternative,” Adam says.

After all of the uncertainties in the economy during the pandemic, investors should remember the need to stay the course. You’re investing for the future, not just following the constant swings of the market.

“You really have to keep focused on what your goal is and don’t get distracted by what the market’s doing today or what’s on your statement today because if you do that, you get off that path and you don’t want to do that,” Adam adds.

2. Paying down high-cost debt Earning a return doesn’t necessarily involve “investing” in the traditional sense. It can also involve getting rid of highcost debt that might be dragging you down. If you’re carrying a balance on a credit card with an interest rate of 15% from month to month, you’re going to be paying more than the interest you could accrue on a CD or any other traditional saving product. It’s much better to use your money to get that bill to zero than put it in a low-risk option that might pay 2% interest annually.

“Mortgages and a car note might be OK, but you should be paying down anything with a double-digit interest rate,” says Bill Hammer Jr., president of New York-based Hammer Wealth Group.

Paying down credit card debt also protects you against rising interest rates in the future. And once the debt is paid down, it will be easier to put away money on a regular basis and build up your savings.

“Paying down debt is one of the only ways you can get a guaranteed risk-free return,” Hammer says.

3. Peer-to-peer lending While you want to pay down your debts, others like you might need to borrow some money. Peer-to-peer lending,

often known as “P2P lending,” is a creative option if you’re willing to take a little risk for higher reward, Empyrion’s Foss says. Consider Prosper, which lets you make loans to random strangers and earn a good annual return. Prosper’s data shows that individual investors earn average annual returns of 5.3%.

You can lend to borrowers in different risk categories based on their credit scores. Just as a bank can charge a higher interest rate for those with lower credit scores, you get a higher interest rate for agreeing to loan to individuals with less-thanperfect credit.

Foss says it’s a less risky option than the stock market.

She recommends sticking with borrowers who have AAA ratings.

“I wouldn’t put all of your cash here, but it might work well as part of a portfolio with dividend-paying stocks and a short-term corporate bond fund,” Foss says.

4. Bond funds Short-term bond funds are another alternative to investing in CDs. Funds have similar terms such as 1-year and 3-year maturity dates, and they hold bonds in everything from foreign countries to utilities to corporations. The yields can be quite strong, too. For example, Vanguard’s Short-Term Bond Index Fund (VBISX), which spreads money across corporate bonds and U.S. government bonds, has a three-year annualized return of 3.28%, as of Oct. 25.

Another option could be an international bond fund.

Many of these funds hold bonds from AAA-rated creditworthy nations. There are also emerging market bond funds, although these carry bigger risks. As you get started, read Bankrate’s guide on how to invest in bonds to educate yourself on the wide range of options.

CD vs. money market vs. Roth IRA Trying to choose between a CD, a money market account and a Roth IRA? The right answer depends on how you’re planning to use the money you’re stowing away.

If you’re looking for a place to park your emergency funds, for example, you’re probably better off putting it in a

money market account, Adam says. That way, you can withdraw it as soon as you need it without concerns of a penalty.

You’ll earn a little bit, too, but nothing to write home about.

In the current climate, the best money market rates are sitting around 0.5%.

A CD might be a good place for short-term cash you’re planning to use within a year for an expense like buying a car or a house. But it’s not a good place for long-term retirement funds. Those kinds of savings should go into a retirement account instead, like a Roth IRA that allows withdrawals in retirement to be made tax free since contributions are made with after-tax dollars. And if retirement is still far off in the distance for you, it’s essential to think about the best long-term investments for your strategy.

Are CDs worth it?

Right now, you’ll be hardpressed to find an interest rate on a standard CD that will justify locking up your funds for an extended period of time. While traditional CDs may not be worth it in the current market, you may want to explore some alternative options for CDs. For example, Ally Bank offers a CD that gives you the option to request a rate increase that adjusts to the bank’s updated rate (once for the two-year CD and twice for the four-year product).

A number of banks including Marcus by Goldman Sachs offer a CD that allows you to withdraw your funds without paying a penalty. Be sure to compare Bankrate’s best investments to determine which vehicles are the right avenue for your growth needs.

Are CDs a good investment for retirement?

“If you (are a) younger person, you’re investing for retirement or something that’s a long-term investment you want, you shouldn’t be in CDs because those are short-term investments in my opinion, with low returns,” Adam adds. “You can’t fund your retirement on a two point whatever return. You’ve got to get more growth.”

To find that growth, Elliot Pepper, CPA, CFP, MST, financial planner and director of tax at Maryland-based Northbrook Financial, recommends targetdate funds.

“Many large institutions offer target-date funds, which are very popular in 401(k) or retirement accounts as they essentially offer a set glide path away from riskier investments and into more conservative fixed income investments based on the target date of the fund,” Pepper says.

Once that target date arrives and you actually do retire, CDs might be a good addition to your portfolio. However, it’s important to note that you might luck out and live even longer than you expect. In that case, you could need more than earnings from CDs.

Are CDs tax-free?

A CD will pay you some interest, but you’ll also have to pay the government. Just like money you would stick in a savings or money market account, money that’s saved in a CD is taxable. That may take a significant bite out of your earnings, especially if you aren’t saving that much money to begin with.

If you have IRA CDs, you won’t pay taxes on contributions or any interest until you withdraw the money in retirement.

If you open Roth IRAs, your distributions in retirement would be free from taxation.

If you’re genuinely concerned about your tax situation, you may want to turn to an alternative – like a municipal bond – to avoid the taxation problem altogether.

Best returns for short-term and long-term funds A CD is just one option if you’re looking for a place to stash your short-term funds.

There are a variety of alternative options, especially if you’re looking for a higher rate of return and are willing to accept the tradeoff with a higher risk.

Besides municipal bonds and short-term bond funds, you could earn a higher yield by investing in a mutual fund.

Depending on how you invest your money, you could end up with a yield in the double-digits.

For your long-term funding needs, you’ll need to look beyond CDs. “CDs aren’t always the right choice, especially if you won’t need the funds for several or more years,” says David Sterman, CFP, president and CEO of New York-based Huguenot Financial Planning. “Funds that focus on longer-term bonds will always offer better yields than CDs.”

Introducing a whole new class of heroes into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, “Eternals,” out Friday, tells a story spanning thousands of years.

Based on the comic books by Jack Kirby, these powerful Eternals have been tasked by cosmic beings known as the Celestials to watch over humanity, intervening only to protect them from alien creatures called Deviants.

Lee), with each Eternal boasting unique special abilities. “(Ajak’s) superpowers are healing,” explained Hayek.

“I heal, and I also talk to the Celestials. It’s the perfect thing for a leader, (because) I think all leaders should have the spirit of a healer.”

In the film’s present day, the Eternals have disbanded.

Believing they had neutralized the threat of the Deviants, a number of them are living their own lives among humans. But when it becomes clear that their longtime foes have returned, it’s time for a family reunion.

According to Zhao – the Academy Award-winning “Nomadland” director who is also a writer on “Eternals” along with Patrick Burleigh,

Ryan Firpo and Kaz Firpo – Ajak is “someone who has lived millions of years … just doing the impossible, over and over and over … yet still is capable of recognizing love, and recognizing her own mistakes, and able to make [difficult] decisions” for her team.

The role required “a woman with the heart the size of the ocean,” said Zhao. “Salma has lived such an extraordinary life, and yet she’s still so open and so loving as very much a mother figure. . . . She was perfect.”

Hayek, who was a fan of Zhao’s previous work including “Songs My Brothers Taught Me” and “The Rider,” said it was humbling to be approached for such a role.

TRAVIS AIR FORCE BASE — Travis movie fans can celebrate Marvel Studio’s new release, “Eternals,” Friday at Travis’ Reel Time Theater.

Airmen and moviegoers who attend the special showing at 6:30 p.m will receive a free child’s ticket on a future showing and the chance to win $100, $50 and $25 Subway gift cards. The gift card drawing will take place at 6:30 p.m.

“First-run movies like ‘Eternals’ offer the military community a much-deserved morale boost,” Travis Exchange General Manager Phonda Bishop said in a press release.

“The superheroes may be on the screen, but we know the real heroes are our airmen and military families.”

The Exchange since 2012 has forged partnerships with movie studios to bring first-run movies to military communities worldwide.

FAIRFIELD — A big red dog makes his big screen debut Wednesday.

In “Clifford The Big Red Dog,” a middleschooler meets a magical animal rescuer who gifts her a little, red puppy.

She wakes up to find a 10-foot hound in her small New York City apartment. While her single mom is away for business, she and her uncle set out on an adventure.

Look for John Cleese and Rose Perez in the film, which is rated PG. Also arriving Wednesday on the big screen, as well as Netflix, on Wednesday, is “Passing,” which is rated PG-13.

It’s set in 1920s New York City and centers on a Black woman who finds her world upended when her life becomes intertwined with a former childhood friend who’s passing as white.

“Belfast,” directed and written by Kenneth Branagh, debuts Friday.

“Outlander’s” Caitriona Balfe heads up the cast in the personal story of one boy’s childhood during the tumult of the late 1960s. The film is rated PG-13.

Bruce Willis stars in “Apex,” about an ex-cop serving a life sentence for a crime he didn’t commit, who is offered a chance at freedom if he can survive a deadly game of Apex.

Six hunters pay for the pleasure of hunting another human on a remote island. The film is not rated.

“Double Walker” is a holiday thriller about a little girl found dead on Christmas Day in a small midwestern town.

That same night, a mysterious young woman moves to town who is revealed to be none other than the ghost of the little girl, determined to piece together the vague memories of her own demise.

The film is not rated.

“Home Sweet Home Alone” arrives on Disney+ as a couple tries to steal back a valuable heirloom from a troublesome child. The film is rated PG. “Julia” ells the story of the legendary cookbook author and television star who changed the way Americans think about

food, television, and even about women. It features never-before-seen archival footage, personal photos, first-person narratives and cutting-edge, mouth-watering food cinematography. The film is rated PG-13.

“Love Is Love Is Love” tells three stories that explore love, commitment and loyalty between couples and friends. Joanne Whalley, Kathy Baker, Rita Wilson and Marshall Bell star.

Amazon Prime brings “Mayor Pete” to the small screen in the story of Pete Buttigieg, the former mayor of South Bend, Indiana, as he campaigns to be the first openly gay president of the United States. The film is rated R. “Multiverse” is the tale of colleagues on the verge of an amazing breakthrough in quantum physics. Then tragedy strikes. One of the colleagues dies in a car crash – then returns to work five months later. Soon, each of them comes face to face with their dead ringer. The film is rated R. “Night Raiders” is set in a dystopian future when a military occupation controls disenfranchised cities in post-war North America.

Children are considered property of the regime which trains them to fight. A desperate Cree woman joins an underground band of vigilantes to infiltrate a state children’s academy and get her daughter back. The film is rated R. “Red Notice” centers on an Interpol-issued Red Notice, a global alert to hunt and capture the world’s most wanted.

The daring heist brings together the FBI’s top profiler (Dwayne Johnson) and rival criminal played by Gail Gadot.

The film is rated PG-13.

“Soulmates” is a romantic comedy about lifelong best friends who are each other’s everything.

Giants give Belt qualifying offer, bring back Flores, drop Cueto Tribune Content Agency The Giants took the first step toward retaining first baseman Brandon Belt by extending him an $18.4 million qualifying offer Sunday.

Belt has 10 days to accept or reject the offer. Kevin Gausman accepted the Giants’ qualifying offer last fall, but it’s rare for players to do so because they prefer to enter the free-agent market.

By making the offer to Belt, the Giants assured they’d receive draft-pick compensation if he signs with another team. Two years ago, after Madison Bumgarner and Will Smith rejected the offer, the Giants received two extra picks.

Belt hit 38 homers in 148 games the past two years, including a career-high 29 in 2021.

Also Sunday, the Giants said they exercised the options for Wilmer Flores ($3.5 million), José Álvarez ($1.5 million) and Jay Jackson and declined Johnny Cueto’s $22 million option, instead buying

out the 35-year-old pitcher for $5 million.

Thus ends Cueto’s six-year, $130 million contract that he signed before the 2016 season.

The deal was looking good in his first year when he won 18 games, made 32 starts, posted a 2.79 ERA and started the All-Star Game.

Cueto didn’t come close to those numbers again. This year he was 7-7 with a 4.08 ERA in 22 appearances, including 21 starts, but he didn’t make a start after Aug. 31 because of a strained elbow. Cueto made a relief appearance Sept. 30 but was left off the playoff roster despite his postseason experience because the team said he hadn’t worked enough late in the season.

Manager Gabe Kapler repeatedly expressed his fondness for Flores’ versatility around the infield and abilities at the plate.

Flores hit 18 homers and posted a .262 batting average and .782 OPS and made the final out of the season, though See Giants, Page B8

VACAVILLE — Led by Asher Love’s sixth-place finish, Vacaville High put a pack of four Bulldogs starting two spots behind him in running away with the Division 2 varsity boys title at the Sac-Joaquin Subsection cross country meet at Frogtown in Angels Camp, Saturday.

Vacaville wound up with 44 points to 117 for runner-up Whitney of Rocklin. Also winning team titles were the Vacaville frosh/girls and Buckingham Charter sophomore boys.

The top 10 varsity teams and top 10 individuals not on those teams advance to next Saturday’s Sac-Joaquin Section Championships at Willow Hill in Folsom, as do the top six teams and 10 individuals in the other divisions.

Love crossed in 16 minutes, 48.9 seconds, followed by Donovan Cheruiyot (eighth, 16:52.0), Colton Walker (ninth, 16:52.1), Paul Hobbs (10th, 16:52.1) and Kellen Ruiz (11th, 16:52.2).

In the same race, Rodriguez finished ninth with 248 points.

Scoring for the Mustangs were William Liu (27th, 17:14.4), Diego Cortes (30th, 17:24.5), Haydn Bennion (61st, 18:05.0), Dean Ramos (63rd, 18:05.7) and Eric Burns (67th, 18:09.0).

In Division 5 varsity girls, Vacaville finished second with 46 points behind a dominant Bret Harte squad that put five runners in the top nine

and had just 25 points.

For the Falcons, Katrina Husby was fifth overall and second among complete teams in 20:45.2.

She was followed by Kara Krulick (fifth, 21:59.4), Laura Everett (third, 22:12.0), Cate Fereira (11th, 23:31.6) and Zoe Stires (22nd, 25:47.9).

Rio Vista, running in the same race, took fourth with 86 points.

The Rams were led by Isabella Saldana (13th, 23:44.6), Kayla Delk (15th, 24:07.8), Sherley Guerra (17th, 24:36.1), Sophia Saldana (20th, 25:02.9) and Brooklyn Koziol (21st, 25:41.5).

Led by Tea Troche Jones’ ninth-place finish (20:05.8), Wood’s girls took third in Division 3 with 146 points. Next were Kaydence Garrison (16th, 20:43.8), Diana Luu (30th, 22:28.3), Rebecca Smith (40th, 23:32.1) and Levi Crabtree (51st, 24:34.7).

Also placing fourth was the Vacaville Christian boys in Division 5 with 136 points. Chris Lespron (sixth, 18:27.2) flew fastest for the Falcons, followed by Maverick Adam (16th, 19:29.3), Aaron Laxamana (20th, 19:44.0), Apollo Adam (41st, 20:34.5) and Harrison Jones (53rd, 21:00.6).

Alexa Amador’s 13th place finish in 19:43.2 helped the Rodriguez girls place eighth in Division 2. Others scoring for the Mustangs were Gabriella Swartz (34th, 20:29.2), Grace Blystra (47th, 20:54.2), Kaitlene Ofilan (52nd, 21:01.6) and Kate Kimball

The Wood boys grabbed the last spot in Division 3 by finishing 10th with 251 points.

Otto Porter Jr.’s 15 points were fourth on

the team, behind Andrew Wiggins’ 16, and, for a moment at the end of the first half, the ninth-year wing took over the game.

He stepped back for one 3, grabbed a rebound on the other end, raced back and sank another from distance, then forced a steal and pulled up for his third triple in a span of 40 seconds, drawing a reaction from the bench rivaled only by Payton’s emphatic slam.

This time, wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk lost a fumble at Arizona’s 7-yard line at the end of a 22-yard completion early in the second quarter. The giveaway led an 85-yrad field-goal drive that gave the Cardinals 17-0 lead and included a meltdown from 49ers cornerback Josh Norman.

After the 49ers stopped the Cardinals on thirdand-18 from the 49ers’ 19-yard line, Arizona head coach Kliff Kingsbury was flagged for

unsportsmanlike conduct for running on to the field. However, Norman began yelling at Kingsbury, was flagged for taunting and needed to be restrained by teammates, one of whom, safety Tavon Wilson, exchanged heated words with Norman. The 49ers benched Norman, replacing him with Dre Kirkpatrick, for the rest of the game.

Trailing 17-0, the 49ers marched 75 yards for a desperately needed score before intermission. Quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo found Kittle for a six-yard touch-

down to trim the deficit to 17-7 with 22 seconds left in the second quarter.

Whatever momentum the 49ers carried into the third quarter vanished, immediately. The Cardinals opened the second half with a three-play, 72-yard, 87-second touchdown drive. It ended with a 45-yard screen to Conner, who caught the pass two yards behind the line of scrimmage and ran untouched on a zig-zag path to the end zone for a 24-7 lead.

The Cardinals went up 31-7 on their next possession, which was

sandwiched by two long runs. It began with a 35-yard run by Conner and ended with a 21-yard scamper by undrafted rookie running back Eno Benjamin, who ran over Kirkpatrick around the 10-yard line.

The 49ers closed to within 31-14 on Garoppolo’s 11-yard touchdown to Aiyuk on third-and-goal with about five minutes left in the third quarter.

And they got to within two scores on Robbie Gould’s 26-yard field goal with about eight minutes left.

Reese said she feels that was their way of saying they think she’s going too far.

“I’m not going to hurt myself,” she said.

Cranage won’t let her, Reese said. When she wasn’t able to complete all she wanted to during a recent workout, she sent Cranage a text and he told her to cut back some.

“Carrie is by no means an attention seeker, but it’s hard to go unnoticed when she’s deadlifting almost (two) times her bodyweight – only a few weeks before her 85th birthday,” Cranage wrote.

“After we posted a video of one of her 5 a.m. workouts with me, it was picked up and reposted by Men’s Health and several other large fitness and media outlets, such as B.E.T. and was seen by millions in only a few days,” Cranage wrote. “In Phoenix at the

WABLD World Championships, she was widely recognized anywhere we went as the ‘powerlifting grandma.’ Carrie was inducted into the Powerlifting Hall of Fame after competing, which is the highest honor possible in this sport.”

Cranage said it’s been a phenomenal experience to be a part of Reese’s journey.

“She continues to impress me every week.

She is always early to our 5 a.m. sessions, and she never complains. Carrie is a fantastic role model for everyone and more people should strive to follow in her footsteps.”

Reese will celebrate her 85th birthday Nov. 21.

At one point, she said she

would retire from weightlifting when she was 90.

“When they put me in a box (casket), that’s when I will stop,” she said.

She often wears a T-shirt that reads, “Mind Over Matter.” It springs from her belief that she is much stronger in competitions than at the gym.

Her home is decorated with encouraging messages and artwork as a reminder to see and live the best life.

Reese encourages her fell octogenarians, and those younger and older, to find some form of regular exercise that brings joy, pleasure and happiness.

“Weightlifting is not for everyone,” she said.“I can’t swim.”

GIANTS SHORTSTOP BRANDON CRAWFORD WINS FOURTH GOLD GLOVE AWARD In perhaps his finest all-around season, Brandon Craw ford’s defense was again golden.

The Giants’ shortstop won his fourth Gold Glove – his first since 2017 – when the defensive awards were announced Sunday.

He edged fellow finalists Francisco Lindor of the Mets and Pittsburgh’s Kevin Newman.

A fourth Gold Glove tied Crawford with J.T. Snow for third-most won by a player with the Giants, after Willie Mays (12) and Barry Bonds (5).

Crawford was the lone winner from the Giants. Mike Yastrzemski was a finalist in right field, where the award went to the Braves’ Adam Duvall. Winners were selected by a vote of NL managers and coaches, who couldn’t vote for their own players, and a SABR defensive index that comprised about 25% of the selection total.

Most metrics rated Crawford highly. He tied for third among qualified NL shortstops in defensive runs saved (6), per FanGraphs, while Statcast ranked him third in outs above average.

In late August, the SABR index rated Crawford the NL’s third-best defensive player at any position, and second at shortstop behind St. Louis’ Paul DeJong, who was not a finalist.

Crawford, 34, was the only major-league shortstop over age 32 to play more than 58 games at the position. He started 130 and logged 1,165 2/3 innings, thirdmost among NL shortstops.

The Giants had gone three years without a Gold Glove winner since Crawford garnered the last of three in a row from 2015-17.

Crawford was a finalist in 2018, but not the past two seasons.

He faced stiff competition this year. Newman led NL shortstops in fielding percentage and defensive runs saved, making three errors in 132 games. Lindor, a twotime Gold Glove winner in the AL, led NL shortstops in outs above average, per Statcast.

A’S MATT CHAPMAN, SEAN MURPHY NAMED GOLD GLOVE WINNERS Sean Murphy forged a reputation in the minors as an excellent defensive catcher. For his first full season in the majors, the A’s catcher owns a Gold Glove award.

Murphy and third baseman Matt Chapman were among the AL Gold Glove winners announced Sunday.

Chapman won his third, becoming the fourth A’s player to win at least three. Matt Olson, a finalist at first base also seeking his third, was edged

by Houston’s Yuli Gurriel.

Winners were selected by a vote of AL managers and coaches, who could not vote for their own players, and a SABR defensive index that comprised about 25% of the selection total.

Murphy, who beat out fellow finalists Mar tín Maldonado of the Astros and Salvador Perez of the Royals, is the first A’s catcher to garner a Gold Glove.

A swath of stats measuring defense praised Murphy’s performance. He tied for second among AL catchers with 10 defensive runs saved, per FanGraphs, which also ranked him the league’s second-best pitch framer.

Murphy was charged with one passed ball all year and had a .993 fielding percentage. After opponents began 18-for-19 in stolenbase attempts against him, Murphy threw out 12-of-35 the rest of the season.

Murphy, 27, arrived at spring training in February about a month removed from surgery for a collapsed lung. Despite some uncertainty about his workload, Murphy went on to start in 104 games and catch 923 1/3 innings, fourth-most in the AL. He ceded playing time in the second half to trade addition Yan Gomes; former manager Bob Melvin, though, said after the season he believed that stretch will benefit Murphy.

“I expect Murph – not to put too much pressure on him – but I expect him to be an All-Star,” Melvin said last month. “Not only is he a good catchand-throw guy, you look at his framing numbers this year, his power. I really believe it’s going to all come together for him next year.”

Chapman, a Platinum Glove winner in 2018-19 as the league’s best overall defender, had his 2020 season cut short by hip surgery.

Returning in the spring, Chapman said one of his goals was to contend again for the Gold Glove, saying he “felt like that was my award to lose.”

If effects of Chapman’s surgery lingered, they did not appear in his defense. Chapman led AL third basemen in fielding percentage (.987), putouts (166) and innings (1,314 2/3).

He also tied for most defensive runs saved (10) and ranked second among all AL players, regardless of position, in FanGraphs’ ultimate zone rating.
