Enrollment shifts make for rough 1st week of school Number of students overall down more than 400; Virtual Academy doubles projections Susan Hiland

FAIRFIELD — The first week of school was not without its challenges, Fairfield-Suisun School District Superintendent Kris Corey says. Corey, in her report to the school board Thursday, noted that the projected number of students enrolled COREY was off by 443. “We have been calling parents and reaching out to students to see where they are,” Corey said. This has contributed to the district defined dropout rate being much higher than expected. “If they dropped out, then we need to find out where to send the records,” Corey said. By way of Suisun comparison,
Elementary School serves approximately 550 children; Crescent Elementary, 625; K.I. Jones Elementary, 735; Anna Kyle Elementary, 750; and Nelda Mundy E l e m e n t a r y, appr ox i m ately 770. District officials were also cought by surprise when the Virtual Academy of FairfieldSuisun, which was thought to have enrolling 400 students, instead had 761 enrollees. “We are slated for an additional 72 students this week,” Corey said. The result of so many students enrolled in the Virtual Academy is that the enrollment for the in-person classroom is quite high. It also means

Newly formed Suisun dive team members practice for dark water rescues

SUISUN CITY — The Suisun Slough waters are dark and murky, and even in bright sunlight it is evident visibility past a certain point is bad. There’s a special name for water like that – black water – and it is well-earned. “Once you get down a few feet it’s pitch black,” said Suisun Fire

Chief Justin Vincent. “If, say, a child were to fall in the water off the docks, it would be difficult for a bystander to just jump in and grab them because of the low visibility.” With that thought in mind, the newly formed Suisun City Fire Department Rescue Dive Team has been practicing all year learning how to dive in various water conditions for just such occasions. Several of the six divers stood on land getting ready for training
Saturday, and began demonstrating how bad it is underwater by standing less than an inch from each other’s faces pointing out that they can’t see them if they were that close underwater. It is a sobering thought. The team of six divers and seven above-ground handlers are taking this weekend to finish the last of the certification for See Team, Page A9
Battle of the Badges softball game a chance for fun, fundraising after year of pandemic Susan Hiland

FAIRFIELD — The inaugural edition of the Fairfield Police Officers’ Association’s Solano County Battle of the Badges softball tournament brought out police and fire personnel from across the county for a day of
play Saturday. Organizer James Lewis, a Fairfield police officer, said he was hoping that it would be a day of relaxing fun. “It has been over a year we have all been tied down with work in a pandemic that is really stressful,” he said. “I wanted to do something
that brought the fun back into our lives.” So Lewis came up with a multiple-officer softball game idea. “Everybody was invited,” he said. “I thought it would make a great fundraiser for the Fairfield Police Activities League.”
He said he hoped that PAL would be able to be introduced to more people so they could see what the organization does. Lewis asked each fire and police department from Fairfield, Vallejo, Benicia and the Solano County sheriff’s See Battle, Page A9
