LAFCO OKs adding DiSC site to city’s sphere By Anne Ternus-Bellamy Enterprise staff writer The proposed Davis Innovation and Sustainability Campus cleared another hurdle Thursday when the Yolo Local Agency Formation Commission approved an amendment to the city’s sphere of influence to accommodate the project. The commission voted unanimously to add a 118.5-acre site east of city limits to Davis’s sphere of influence and will take separate action on the city’s annexation of the property should voters approve the project June 7. Included in the sphere of influence are the DiSC site itself as well as land to the south that includes Ikeda’s Market, the city water tank and the park-and-ride lot. Not included is the the 85-acre parcel to the immediate north of the DiSC site that was part of the original DISC project turned down by voters two years ago. The new iteration of DiSC, on the June 7 ballot as Measure H, would develop about 102 acres east of Mace Boulevard and north of I-80 with 1.1 million square feet of office, laboratory and advanced manufacturing space, as well as 460 housing units, retail, a hotel and green space. Last month, the city and county

UC Davis honors Gold Star Aggies By Caleb Hampton Enterprise staff writer Ahead of Memorial Day, UC Davis held a ceremony Thursday evening to honor the 136 Aggies who have lost their lives while serving in the U.S. military. The ceremony, which took place in the Memorial Union’s North Courtyard, was the first in-person event honoring the Gold Star Aggies since the pandemic interrupted the annual ceremony two years ago. The ceremony featured

several traditional components, including the playing of taps, the reading of the names of the Gold Star Aggies, and a daylong tribute to them by placing one American flag for each of them on the Quad.

“(Stuart) quickly helped form a plan to protect military personnel from the virus,” UC Davis’ news service said in a release. “That plan included quarantining people upon arrival and closing dining halls and other gathering places.”

Stuart earned a Bronze Star for his role in implementing these public health precautions. “We are all challenged and changed by our service and ultimately to some extent all of us pay that debt of sacrifice,” Stuart said in his address. “Today, however, is not about those of us who are here. It’s about them — it’s our 136 Gold Star Aggies and countless other men and women who’ve given their life,

The UC Davis Genome Center detected 16 possible cases of the BA.4 and BA.5 Omicron subvariants between May 8 and May 21, according to data from Healthy Davis Together. As part of HDT’s free COVID-19 testing operations, all positive COVID19 samples from Yolo County are routinely screened by the Genome Center for variants, including Omicron and other variants of concern and variants of interest. BA.4 and BA.5 have been deemed variants of

concern by the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control and are believed to have driven recent COVID-19 surges in several countries, including South Africa. According to the European CDPC, the growth advantage being seen with BA.4 and BA.5 is likely “due to their ability to evade immune protection induced by prior infection and/or vaccination, particularly if this has waned over time.” However, the agency said, “there is currently no
