ownership to keep our children safe.” Ault thanked the council for the proclamation, noting that, “we wear orange the first Friday in June to symbolize all the lives lost to senseless gun violence. “And while I’m always appreciative of efforts to raise awareness for this issue,” she said, “tonight I’m here on a day where (students and teachers) have been murdered while at school in Texas. Tonight a proclamation feels insufficient.” “Every day our country loses

Both the Davis City Council and the Yolo County Board of Supervisors resumed in-person meetings on Tuesday following more than two years of meeting remotely. The Board of Supervisors used a hybrid format where people could still participate via Zoom and many public commenters, as well as one supervisor (Don Saylor of Davis), did so. The council did not offer a Zoom option and all council members were present in person. The resumption of in-person meetings came the same day the county health officer warned that levels of COVID-19 in Davis wastewater were nearing the peak of the January Omicron surge and reiterated her strong recommendation that everyone wear masks indoors. However, many inperson participants at both meetings were unmasked. Meanwhile, prior to Tuesday’s council meeting — on the meeting agenda released Friday — the city announced a change to public comment.

City, county pledge support in effort against violence By Anne Ternus-Bellamy Enterprise staff writer Both the Davis City Council and the Yolo County Board of Supervisors had longstanding items on their agendas for Tuesday’s meetings declaring the first Friday in June as Gun Violence Awareness Day. During the morning Board of Supervisors meeting, a resolution was presented to Davis resident Emily Ault, co-lead of the local chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, declaring that “we as a county must do more to reduce gun violence” and urging

everyone to wear orange on June 3 to help raise awareness about gun violence. In accepting on behalf of Moms Demand Action, Ault noted that she had just received an alert about a shooting at a Texas school. Not much was known about the situation then, but by the time Ault appeared before the council Tuesday evening to accept a similar resolution from the city, the magnitude of the shooting, with 19 children and two teachers dead, was clear. Prior to presenting Ault with the resolution, Vice Mayor

Lucas Frerichs called for a moment of silence, then read aloud the document. “Gun violence prevention is more important than ever as the COVID-19 pandemic continues to exacerbate gun violence after more than two years of increased gun sales, increased calls to suicide and domestic violence hotlines and an increase in city gun violence,” Frerichs read. “We renew our commitment to reduce gun violence and pledge to do all we can to keep firearms out of the wrong hands, and encourage responsible gun

A UC Davis student died Wednesday morning after being struck by a garbage truck while riding her bicycle, campus officials said. The female student succumbed to her injuries after being transported to the UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento. Coroner’s officials had not released her identity as of Thursday afternoon. “On behalf of UC Davis, we share our deepest condolences with her family. We share in the pain of their loss,” Chancellor Gary S. May said in a

news release. “In this time of grief, I do want to thank our first responders who worked heroically at the scene as well as the UC Davis Medical Center team who did everything they could to save her life.” Campus officials said the collision occurred shortly after 8 a.m. at the intersection of Dairy Road and Hutchison Drive. An investigation by the UCD and Davis police departments, with assistance from the West Sacramento Police Department, is underway to determine the cause.
