Donated house offers new Davis firefighters ‘realistic’ training By Lauren Keene Enterprise staff writer Multiple Davis Fire Department units responded Wednesday to reports of a first-alarm structure fire in the 500 block of Anderson Road. They arrived to find smoke

pouring from the single-story residence and had to force their way inside, finding themselves blinded by smoke as they searched the premises for occupants as well as the source of the blaze. Fortunately, the incident was

not an actual fire, but rather a comprehensive training exercise for six new Fire Department recruits finishing up a six-week training program. They graduate Friday. Throughout the day Wednesday, the new hires practiced their skills in forcible entry, hose and ladder placement, roof ventilation and search and rescue efforts. A smoke generator placed inside the house added

to the lifelike experience. “It’s basically to get them up to speed, to go online as a firefighter,” Davis fire Capt. Mike Plescia said. “It’s probably the most realistic they’re getting the whole time, and it’s also good refresher training for the rest of us.”

The state Supreme Court has denied review of an appellate court ruling upholding the city’s approval of the Trackside Center mixed-use housing development. Approved by the City Council in the fall of 2017, Trackside is located just east of the railroad tracks at 901-919 Third St., a location currently occupied by two single-story commercial buildings. The site will now become home to a building providing 27 apartment units on three floors above 8,950 square feet of

retail on the ground floor. Members of the Old East Davis Neighborhood Association had sued the city over its approval of the project, arguing Trackside violates the city’s zoning ordinances and is inconsistent with planning provisions governing transition between the core area of downtown and the Old East Davis neighborhood. The primary issue: the height of the building, which neighbors believe should be three floors rather than four. A Yolo Superior Court
