Cases rising; Sisson asks locals to mask up

Visions of Picnic Day

By Anne Ternus-Bellamy Enterprise staff writer Yolo County’s health officer is strongly recommending that everyone wear masks in indoor public settings as COVID-19 transmission increases in Davis and throughout the county. Masks are recommended but not required, including indoors on K-12 school campuses in Davis as well as on the UC Davis campus. The rise in cases is being attributed not just to the BA.2 sub-variant of Omicron but also to its own subvariant, BA.2.12.1, which is estimated to be 30 percent more infectious. The latter was first detected in Yolo County on the UC Davis Campus in late March and now accounts for nearly half of campus cases, according to the county. Thanks to the UC Davis Genome Center, which types all positive COVID-19 samples collected on campus and by Healthy Davis Together, Yolo County has a better sense of what variants are circulating than many other counties. Additionally, testing wastewater for COVID-19, as UC Davis does, provides an indication of viral levels

The Board of Supervisors on Tuesday put off until May 10 any decision on whether to purchase the 13-acre St. John’s Retirement Village in Woodland. A public hearing had been scheduled for Tuesday morning on a proposal for the county to purchase the property for $2.9 million and convert it into a variety of services and housing, including for low-income seniors and families. But the matter was put off upon the request of the St. John’s board of

directors, Supervisor Angel Barajas of Woodland announced as the meeting got underway. St. John's may still be considering a proposal from a private group to purchase the facility and keep it as a senior retirement community, but word also came Tuesday of another proposal that may be going to the board of directors as well. Up until its closure earlier this year, St. John’s had for decades provided independent living, assisted living, memory care and skilled nursing to the
