First Omicron case found in California VAX: Surge threat adds urgency By Anne Ternus-Bellamy Enterprise staff writer California has reported the state's first case of the Omicron variant, identified by UC San Francisco. An individual who had returned home to San Francisco from South Africa last week tested positive on Monday after experiencing mild symptoms, officials said. The person was fully vaccinated but had not received a booster shot and the symptoms were mild. A joint statement issued Wednesday by the San Francisco and California departments of public health said the detection was expected and credited the state's testing and
early-detection systems. “Our partners at the University of California, San Francisco, identified this case through their sequencing capabilities," the statement said. "California is continuing to monitor the variant’s presence and progress through the state’s robust whole genome sequencing surveillance." "We must remain vigilant against this variant, but it is not a cause for panic," the departments said. "We should assume that it's in other states as well," Gov. Gavin Newsom said on Twitter. The state reported it is increasing COVID-19
testing at airports for arrivals from countries identified by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in order to help prevent the spread of the new variant. "We recognize that everyone is exhausted, and the news of a new variant can be overwhelming. It is important that we collectively focus on the things we know prevent the spread of COVID-19, and its variants. Individuals should (1) get vaccinated and boosted; (2) wear your mask in indoor settings; (3) get tested if you have symptoms; and (4) stay home if you are sick," the health departments said.
Davis Manor hosts 6th annual Winter Bazaar Special to The Enterprise The friendly residents of Davis Manor invite the Davis community to come enjoy local artisanal shopping and neighborly holiday cheer. Neighborhood artisans will showcase a variety of hand-crafted artwork, herbal remedies, and specialty treats at the neighborhood’s sixth annual Winter Bazaar from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 5. The event will be held outdoors on the spacious “Naturehood” street mural at the corner of Duke and M streets. Masks are required and physical distancing will be observed. This year’s featured resident Davis Manor artists include Jen Hoover’s Aana Jaana Himalayan woolen textile crafts (aana-jaana.com), Nik Joshi and Avikesson’s metal sculptures and furniture (http://www.instagram.com/
nikhil.joshi1974), Jen Nachmanoff ’s handcrafted pottery (jennifernachmanoffceramics.weebly.com), and Robin Kozloff ’s ceramic planters and succulents. Other returning favorites to the Winter Bazaar are Laura Morton’s fine art and jewelry (LauraMortonArt.com), Dave Beal’s pour paintings, Dave Nachmanoff ’s upcycled guitar string jewelry and music, and Michaela Daystar’s HeartScapes Apothecary with a delightful array of herbal medicinals and kitchen witchery. Artisanal food offerings include Cloverleaf Farm jams, syrups, and fruit leather, and Morgan Matz’ baked goods. In case of rain, the Winter Bazaar will be postponed to Sunday, Dec. 12. For additional information, contact Jen Nachmanoff at jennach67@gmail.com.
From Page A1 and 60.6 percent have received at least one dose. n 8.6 percent of children ages 5 to 11 are fully vaccinated and 25.7 percent have received at least one dose. As the county continues its efforts to get more people vaccinated, the arrival of the Omicron variant, on top of fears of a Deltafueled winter surge, has officials focusing on getting booster shots into all eligible adults as well. There, too, rates vary among age groups. Seniors over the age of 65 were the among the first residents eligible for booster shots but less than half of Yolo County seniors have received one, including 47.5 percent of those ages 65 to 74 and 46.7 percent of those ages 75 to 84. Rates are even lower among younger adults. About 28 percent of county residents ages 55 to 64 have received a booster shot and 21 percent of those ages 45 to 54. Fewer than 20 percent of residents under 44 have received booster doses. Health officials urge all adults who are six months past their second Pfizer or Moderna dose or two months past their Johnson & Johnson shot to get a booster due to waning protection provided by the vaccines. Health Officer Dr. Aimee Sisson has said that while the vast majority of county
residents who end up hospitalized with COVID-19 are unvaccinated, those who had been vaccinated are primarily older adults who had not yet received a booster shot. ———— Of the 35,556 booster shots administered to Yolo County residents so far, 19,132 (or 53.8 percent) were Pfizer doses and 16,093 (or 45.3 percent) were Moderna, while 330 Johnson & Johnson boosters have been administered. Health officials have authorized a mix-andmatch approach to boosters, so individuals do not need to get a booster shot of the same vaccine received previously. A study published in The Lancet on Thursday found seven different COVID-19 vaccines given as boosters (including all three
