Festival

Continued from B1 festival — El Dorado and Gallows — both of which will feature music from morning until late night and even into the next day. The indoor facility, Hangin’ Hall, kicks off the long-weekend event at 7 p.m. Thursday with Royal Jelly Jive. The online bio for the band explains its sound as unique and intoxicating “San Francisco Soul.” Frontwoman Lauren Bjelde is referred to as “dynamic” and the sextet as “sultry,” rocking into “uncharted musical territories with its infectious blend of modern and throwback sensibilities.” The band features “retro horns, razor-sharp beats and groovy songs” near impossible to resist. Shortened to RJJ, Royal Jelly Jive is considered as popular for fancy cocktail parties as they are for any funky dance party. Railroad Earth will take the Hangin’ Hall stage from 9-11:15 p.m., with The High Hawks following from midnight until 2 a.m. The High Hawks is

bluegrass-type tribute to the Grateful Dead. The show’s popularity caused the McCourys to take it on tour from its origins in St. Louis with the Jeff Austin Band. In more recent years, they combine with a variety of artists on Grateful Ball tours, in which the music of the Grateful Dead is reinterpreted every night. Check out thetravelinmccourys. com for specific tour information for this band. With the Hangtown Music Festival growing each year in attendance and budget, production organizers are excited about the addition of new elements, including a kids zone, morning yoga and meditation with Railroad Earth member Tim Carbone and pumpkin carving with power tools, an activity led by Skehan. Attendees at the event can carve a pumpkin and the main stage is decorated with them; at night they are lit up. Two stages highlight the musical entertainment at the

and tickets are available on hangtownfestival. com. Although Father Del McCoury is not scheduled for the event specifically, music-goers will not be disappointed by the sons of one the bluegrass greats. Ronnie on mandolin and Rob on banjo got their start playing music as teenagers with their dad, who played with the well-known father of bluegrass, Bill Monroe, in 1963. Ronnie and Rob began in the 1980s with Del McCoury and the Dixie Pals, which later became known simply as the Del McCoury Band. Fiddler Jason Carter joined in 1992 and Alan Bartram replaced Mike Bub as bassist in 2005. After using rotating guitarists while performing as the Travelin’ McCourys, the brothers decided in 2015 to add permanent guitar player Cody Kilby, performing then with Ricky Skaggs & Kentucky Thunder. In 2016 the Travelin’ McCourys created The Grateful Ball, a

described as “a new allstar project comprised of Vince Herman of Leftover Salmon, Adam Greuel from Horseshoes & Hand Grenades, Chad Staehly of Hard Working Americans, Brian Adams from DeadPhish Orchestra, and Will Trask of Great American Taxi.” They will bring their blend of Americana, jam and bluegrass music to the festival. From the looks of the schedule they only have one set Thursday in the wee hours of the morning, but from the members it looks like a fun time. Friday begins at noon with another set from Royal Jelly Jive, followed by Ida Mae, Scott Pemberton O Theory, Twiddle, St. Paul and The Broken Bones and finishing up on the El Dorado stage with Gov’t Mule from 10:15 p.m. to midnight. Twiddle begins the evening performances at 6 p.m. An American folk band, Twiddle incorporates influences from a variety of music genres, including rock, jazz, reggae, bluegrass and funk. They were formed at Castleton State College in Vermont in 2004, with members Mihali Savoulidis (guitar, vocals), Ryan Dempsey (keyboards, vocals), Zdenek Gubb (bass, vocals), and Brook Jordan (drums, percussion, vocals). In its innovation for entertainment, Twiddle holds an annual festival — Tumble Down at Burlington Waterfront Park. St. Paul and The Broken Bones is currently an eightpiece soul band from Birmingham, Ala., that formed in 2012. The band opened for The Rolling Stones’ Zip Code Tour in Atlanta, Ga., in 2015 and has appeared on various national television programs including Late Night with David Letterman, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Jimmy Kimmel Live, Conan on TBS, Late Night with Seth Meyers, The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson, Austin City Limits and Bluegrass Underground. They promise to shake a few bones, if not brake them. Also on Friday, in staggered time slots to El Dorado, the Gallows stage will feature Creamery Station, the ever-popular Island of Black & White, and The Nth Power. Emerging from El Dorado County in 2004, Island of Black and White quickly became a must-see band with founder and lead vocalist Chris Haislet performing on accordion while riding a unicycle. He also plays rhythm guitar, keys, organ and melodica. Since 2016, the band has been awarded Best Reggae Jam Band by

the Sacramento Music Awards, won Best Rock Band in 2019 and was entered into the Sammies Hall of Fame that same year. The Island of Black and White’s high-energy performances include Nawal Alwareeth, manager, drummer and background vocals; Tim Picchi, lead guitar and background vocals; Patrick Picchi, percussion; and Scott Mitchell on bass. The Nth Power follows Island of Black and White for two sets ending the Gallows stage performance for Friday night. They also have an afternoon set on the El Dorado stage performing the music of Nirvana as The Nth Utero from 3:15-4:45 p.m. The band was formed during a spontaneous late-night jam at the 2012 Jazz Fest in New Orleans. Its music is referred to as “relentlessly funky and soulful” and “on a mission to share the light through music.” The three-member band includes Nikki Glaspie, former drummer for Beyonce and current member of Ivan Nevilles’ band, Dumpstaphunk; bassist Nate Edgar, from Groovechild and John Browns Body; and singer/guitarist Nick Cassarino, coming from the Jennifer Hartswick Band. Saturday evening once again features Railroad Earth closing out the El Dorado stage. Featured earlier in the day will be Birches Bend, The Lil Smokies, Leftover Salmon and Galactic. Mescalito plays two sets on the Gallows Saturday, followed by Diggin’ Dirt and the return of Scott Pemberton O Theory. Leftover Salmon has come to be a favorite of bluegrass music lovers. Formed in 1989 with members from two bands – the Salmon Heads and Left Hand String Band – thenmembers included Vince Herman, Dave Dorian, Gerry Cavagnaro, Drew Emmitt and Glenn Keefe. Mark Vann, another founding member; Emmitt and Herman remained the heart and soul of the band until 2002 upon the death of Vann, who played banjo. Bill McKay, Noam Pikelny, Matt Flinner, Bill Payne and others also have been a part of the group, which now includes Andy Thorn and Alwyn Robinson. The band has been the subject of an awardnominated documentary film titled “Years in Your Ears,” profiled in the book “Leftover Salmon: Thirty Years of Festival,” and became the featured “house band” at the Whales Tail Bar in Breckenridge, Colo. on the “Deadliest Catch – After the Catch” episodes. One of its former keyboardists, Erik Deutsch, left the group in 2019 to join the Dixie

Chicks. Diggin’ Dirt returns on Sunday to the El Dorado stage, along with Kamani and The Travelin’ McCourys, while the Gallows will feature local band Red Dirt Ruckus (see B6) and a return of The Lil Smokies. Railroad Earth closes out the El Dorado stage Sunday night from 6:30-8:30 p.m. “What keeps us coming back is the wonderful family vibe that has grown along with the festival,” said Skehan, who plays an Irish bouzouki made by a luthier from Arcata named Phil Crump. “It really is one of the big highlights of our years and we’re proud to be part of something that has taken on a life of its own due to the hard work of the promoters and staff, but especially of the festival-goers that make the Halloweenscene so much fun each year with their costumes and special art installations around the site.” Original band members of Railroad Earth include Andy Goessling, who passed away in 2018, and Tim Carbone, both from the area of northern New Jersey. The two had played music together in their teens and went on the road with their band “the Blue Sparks from Hell,” according to Skehan. Carbone, Skehan, Carey Harmond, Todd Sheaffer, Andrew Altman, Matt Slocum and Mike Robinson make up the current roster of musicians in the band. Sound engineer Mike Partridge is credited with allowing the band to evolve where they could “successfully amplify a fiddle, banjo, mandolin, acoustic guitar and upright bass” with a full rock presence that included string instruments and drums, said Skehan. He added that when they were first approached to do the festival, they discovered that Placerville’s history of being known as “Hangtown” and the festival being in late October, both lent themselves to the “idea of a Hangtown Halloween Ball” now festival. Skehan also said that Railroad Earth’s music truly lends itself to an outdoors venue. According to producer Northway, COVID19 has created many challenges for the festival, but they are grateful to be in their 10th year. “Safety is our No. 1 priority,” he said. “We have hired a COVID compliance officer ... and we are working closely with him and his team to ensure we produce the safest event that we can.” A full breakdown of protocols can be found on the website hangtownfestival.com/ health-and-safety.
