Placerville Art on Parade is a nonprofit community art organization, celebrating 17 years of original, outdoor art that is exhibited on historical Main Street in Placerville. This year the Banners on Parade exhibit has 32 beautiful and original artist-created banners displayed on light poles from through October.

Bidding for the 2021 Banners on Parade will start at noon Saturday, Oct. 16, and run until noon Tuesday, Oct. 26. Interested bidders can view the banners online at biddingowl.com/ PlacervilleArtonParade. To bid on the banners, everyone will need to register beforehand. Proceeds from the auction and artist keepsakes go back into the organization to ensure another exhibit can take place in future years. And this year, the organization will give a portion of the auction proceeds to the Caldor Fire Relief Fund through the El Dorado Community Foundation to help victims impacted by the fire.

The BOP committee encouraged artists to paint banners with a “Celebrating Nature” theme, which resulted in an amazing collection of beautiful and thoughtful banner entries, with landscapes, oceans, forests, rivers, mountains, birds, animals, flowers and more — all fantastically created by talented artists for viewers to enjoy. Each year the banners are judged by local art professionals for first, second and third places, along with several honorable mentions. Banners on Parade is lucky to have sponsors that help keep this community art project going every year. This year’s main sponsor is Images of Hope. Other sponsors included Gold Country Artists Gallery, Eco Signs, El Dorado County Chamber of Commerce and Placerville Flowers on Main. There are also several cash awards for artists sponsored by family and friends in memory of previous Art on Parade committee members through the Geoff Boyd Memorial Artist Awards and the Marianne Kalem Legacy Award. A small group of dedicated committee members and volunteers work hard to ensure the project will continue year after year.

Québec chamber orchestra coming to Grass Valley

InConcert Sierra will present one of the top chamber orchestras in the world, Les Violons du Roy, conducted by Jonathan Cohen and featuring renowned mandolinist Avi Avital at 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 17.

This concert will be the exciting opening of InConcert Sierra’s 202122 Third Sunday Chamber Series and 75th anniversary season. It is the first InConcert live performance after closing in March 2020 due to the pandemic.

“After losing more than an entire season and a half of performances and ticket income due to the pandemic, we are excited to be able to reopen with a preeminent chamber ensemble such as Les Violons du Roy, joined by an absolute favorite of mine, the unsurpassed superstar mandolinist Avi Avital. Classical music performances have been silent for far too long and I anticipate this live concert will be a transcendent experience that we’ve all been profoundly missing,” said Julie Hardin, ICS executive director.

The program includes Bach’s “Violin Concerto No. 1 in A Minor,” Vivaldi’s “Mandolin Concerto in C Major,” Bach’s “The Art of the Fugue,” Vivaldi’s “Concerto for Lute and Two Violins in D Major” and Bach’s “Harpsichord Concerto No. 1 in D Minor.” Four of the five works are arranged by Avital for solo mandolin.

Based in Québec, Les Violons du Roy takes its name from the celebrated court orchestra of the French kings. It was founded in 1984 by Bernard Labadie and continues under celebrated Music Director Jonathan Cohen to explore the nearly boundless repertoire of music for chamber orchestra. The 15-member ensemble plays modern instruments, albeit with period bows for Baroque and classical music and its interpretations are deeply informed by the latest research on 17th- and 18th-century performance practice.

Avital is the first solo mandolinist to be nominated for a Grammy Award. His inspired music-making has electrified audiences in performances around the world, including appearances with orchestras such as the BBC Symphony Orchestra, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Deutsche Symphonie Orchester Berlin and Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal under the batons of great conductors such as Zubin Mehta, Kent Nagano, Osmo Vänskä and Giovanni Antonini.
