Unlikely author thankful for local roots Special to Village Life When asked if she had always wanted to be a writer, Marci Seither (Miller) shook her head and laughed. “If Ponderosa High School had an award for ‘Least Likely to Publish Anything’ I would have won hands down,” she shared. Seither recalled the day she was moved from the electric typewriter back to manual. “Not my proudest moment,” she said. “I was so bad at typing I had to stay a er school to nish my assignments. Plus, the fact I wasn’t a big fan of reading didn’t help.”

While Seither admitted the title of author feels a bit like a stretch, being a creative storyteller is something she has always connected with from as far back as she can Despiteremember.movingto Tennessee almost two years ago, the California native said she’s always thankful for her roots and the wide open space where her parents still live. “I love that we lived in the country, raised sheep and (learned) so many valuable life skills in 4-H,” Seither shared. “So much has changed from when I went to Jackson Elementary, rode the bus to junior high and Ponderosa. Everything has built up. Where we picked blackberries, it is now covered in houses and a Safeway.“Something will never change,” she added. “The support of family and friends has kept me moving forward on this fun writing journey. I am so thankful.” The mom of six started her writing career more than 22 years ago when a story about a cookie baking asco appeared in a local paper. “My mom encouraged me to submit some of the stories I wrote about our kids and eventually I worked up the courage to actually take one into the paper to see if they were interested.” Soon a er it was published the editor asked if she would consider contributing a monthly family humor article, which eventually led to feature articles and human interest“Oncestories.Istarted writing, I realized I had so much to learn,” said Seither. “And I am still learning. I think too many people are afraid to try something that might be hard. Fear of failure is one of the biggest hurdles to taking a risk. But, you never know where that rst scary step might lead. ” Getting words on paper is only part of Seither’s writing journey. She started taking her own photos when she worked for the small town paper while living near Colfax and recently added drone photography to her list of creative storytelling accomplishments. “A few years ago I created a recipe memoir for my family,” Seither recalled. “A friend, who was collaborating on a memoir with someone from Ireland, asked Courtesy photo Ponderosa alum and author Marci Seither returns to El Dorado County as part of her cross-country book tour.

Jana Rossi Staff writer Through a series of events Joe Carson was confronted with a unique opportunity he may not have originally explored; fate fortunately intervened.Carson’s story began when his mom was searching in the El Dorado Hills area for a theater company suited for individuals with intellectual developmental disabilities for his sister Kimmie. Unable to locate a program, she reached out to recreation therapist Jonathan Reis, who ran a theater program of this nature called The Wranglers in Washington. Reis agreed the El Dorado Hills area would be an ideal location for his program. A er connecting various talents, Dream Catchers opened its doors in 2018. Carson, in the meantime, had his life pretty much mapped out. A neuroscience major at UCLA, he said he was on track for a career as a radiologist or anesthesiologist, working as an EMT eld training o cer while nishing up his classes and studying for the MCAT. A er COVID-19 delayed his exam twice, he said he began to reevaluate his priorities. Carson became a Dream Catchers volunteer immediately

As a kid growing up in Sacramento all I knew about Cameron Park was Sam’s Town — my parents bringing the family up to have dinner, listen to live music, throw peanut shells on the sawdust-covered oor and play arcade games. That was more than 50 years ago and much has changed but people I talk to, especially longtime residents, love living in Cameron Park. It’s easy to understand why. We’re in the Sierra Nevada foothills and we have great local shopping and restaurants as well as access to other retail within 15-30 minutes. We have beautiful parks and are close to outdoor recreation spaces with trails, lake and river access, winter sports venues and historical sites. I’m sure I’ve missed lots of things that you think make Cameron Park such a great place to live — feel free to let us know at cpcsd@camweronpark.org. Another characteristic of Cameron Park is how well residents care for their homes (about 8,200 homes total). Drive down any street and a vast majority of houses you’ll see look like the people who live there take pride in their homes. For many of us it’s a labor of love and an investment in our home’s value. It’s important to remember, too, that the investment goes beyond each home. It extends to your neighbor and theMostneighborhood.peoplewho have purchased a home in Cameron Park are aware that they agreed to compliance with local CC&R (Conditions, Covenants and Restrictions). These CC&Rs vary from neighborhood to neighborhood (there are 92 di erent CC&Rs in Cameron Park), so it’s wise to be aware of what you can and can’t do on the front of your property. The most common violations include the storage of trailers, boats and RVs, building materials and trash. Most of these items can be stored behind a set-back side yard fence or behind your home. If items like trailers and recreational vehicles cannot be placed out-of-sight of the street, they can be kept at a storage facility nearby. Not sure what your neighborhood CC&Rs are? Go to cameronpark.org. From there, use our CC&R tab where you will nd helpful tools. Links such as our neighborhood map (cameronpark.org/cc-r-neighborhood-map), your neighborhood CC&Rs (in our PDF archive), complaint forms that can be completed and received by our CC&R department for inspections, as well as all you would need for your home improvement projects with our Architectural Review Committee forms. Thomas Russell Dorr, a young man who was born in Montana and moved shortly after to California, met Helena Kroeker, a young girl from Miami, Manitoba, Canada, while stationed in Berlin, Germany during the Vietnam War. Tom was in the Air Force and accepted a Jesus at L’Abri Fellowship near Lausanne, Switzerland. Helena just finished up Bible studies at Steinbach Bible College then off to do mission ary work with the Mennonite Central Committee at Johannesstif next to the East Berlin wall. What followed was a whirlwind romance and six weeks later they were engaged and married within six months on Aug. 30, 1972. There must be something to be said about a man in uniform!Tomand Helena Dorr started their married life in San Jose, where Tom worked as an accountant and later moved on to Stanford University as a senior system engineer for more than 15 years. Helena stayed home, home schooling their two children, Juanita and Benjamin. She also volunteered at the local church as their librarian. A door opened for a job in the Sacramento area working for Sutter Health and then IBM. When the chil dren grew older and moved out and Tom retired; however, Tom quickly discovered he wasn’t ready to retire and threw himself into several volunteer organizations, serving as a Medicare counselor and treasurer for Ukes for School. He is a self-taught ukulele player in a few uke groups that play in various rest homes and at street fairs. Folsom Community Bible Church was also in need of a librarian, and Helena quickly stepped up to the plate, turn ing a forgotten corner into a thriving sanctuary for young and old alike. Dream Catchers recently held a gala in Town Center where participants performed scenes from “The Greatest Showman.” Due to the success of that fundraiser, they plan on making it a yearly event, with their next show scheduled this December featuring songs and scenes from popular musi cals.By qualifying as a non-vendored service through the Department of Developmental Services’ SelfDetermination Program, Dream Catchers can accept funds through the Alta Regional Center and the organiza tion is always in need of donations and volunteers.“Ourcommunity and supporters are literally the best in the world and they make it possible for us to do what we do,” said Carson. Find more information at dream catchersedh.org.

Carson describes his life as being more fulfilling each day. “Many people have completely transformed from shy and soft-spoken to talkative and openhearted and I love being able to witness that process,” he explained. “Like most people in this line of work, I do it for the love of the people, so immersing myself in it every day has definitely deepened that love and commitment.”

after attending one of Kimmie’s per formances and then the board elected him as president. Suddenly, he said, his future became clear and he began pouring his energy into making Dream Catchers what it is today. “I truly feel my impact will be greater doing what I’m doing now, so I don’t regret my decision to forgo medicine,” Carson shared. He first opened a day program for individuals with IDD, recruited staff and secured office space. Thanks in part to Kevin Nagle of the Nagel Company and Dawn Bricker of the Town Center Management Group, he was able to rent space in El Dorado Hills Town Center.Themission of Dream Catchers is to “empower people with intellectual and developmental disabilities to live their best lives. By providing opportunities for growth in character, health, social connections and independence, our goal is to assist people with IDD on their long-term goals so they can reach their greatest level of independence, whatever that may be,” Carson told VillageExamplesLife.include helping with résu més and job interviews, preparing a budget and offering assistance with general life skills and everyone is able to work on their own personalized longterm goals that will aid them in creating their independence. A typical day spent at Dream Catchers starts with transporting participants from their homes to the Town Center office. The day begins at California Family Fitness in Folsom, where members meditate and work out before heading back to the office for a sack lunch. The afternoon is spent on individual development and the calendar is filled with subjects the par ticipants would like to learn as well as talents they would like to share. Once a week the group gathers to cook a meal at a volunteer’s home. This exercise is collaborative, with the participants creating a recipe, shop ping for the ingredients and paying for the items. In addition, a brunch spot at a local haunt of their choosing is vis ited weekly and Carson is working to add more recreational opportunities, including overnight trips and special events to their calendar.

“We always had the dream of becom ing a part of the solution to the prob lems facing the IDD community,” Carson explained, adding he has his own long-term goal to provide hous ing. The Dream Home would be a housing complex for individuals with IDD that would enable them to live on their own in a safe environment with others experiencing similar challenges.

A dentistry that aims to be a home away from home Jessica Cyphers Staff writer For patients of Dale Stanec, Jr., DDS, going to the dentist feels a little like going home. “We know all of our patients. They’re our friends,” said Dr. Stanec, who works alongside his wife and office manager, Elena, in his Cam eron Park office. “The experience in our office is very personal. We’re very small and greet each patient by name when they walk in. It’s a comfortable, homey place to have dental work done, and we like it that way.” Dr. Stanec has been in dentistry in the Cameron Park area since 2002. As a kid, he was “always into science and math” and loved the idea of owning his own business. “I ran a lawn-mow ing business as a kid — always had some kind of business going — so becoming a dentist and owning my own practice just made sense,” said Dr. Stanec. Dr. Stanec did his under graduate work at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo and then attend ed dental school at Northwestern University in Chicago. He graduated from Northwestern in 2001 and says that, although he was born and raised in San Jose, it was a natural draw to open his practice in the foothills. “Elena and I love this area. We had a lot of family and friends here and thought it would be a great place to raise our kids.” In his office, Dr. Stanec offers a full scope of general and cosmetic dentistry with expertise ranging from porcelain veneers and dental implants to crowns and bridges and more. Unlike many other dentists, Dr. Stanec doesn’t employ dental hygien ists or other technicians but does all of his dental work himself. “I spend a lot of one-on-one time with my patients. It’s fun for me to do the work myself because I get to spend more time with my patients and hang out with them and really get to know them. It makes it fun to do what I do,” said Dr. Stanec.

UCCE Master Gardener of El Dorado County

Dale III, Dr. Stanec, Luis, and Elena Stanec 24 Many herbs grow well County and fall is the perfect time to plant perennial herbs, which you’ll enjoy for years to come. Now is the time to think about what sunny area of your garden would be best as an herb garden and which herbs you’d like to grow. The definition of “herb” is pretty loose, but generally speaking an herb is any plant whose leaves, flowers or roots are used for flavor, fragrance, medicines, cosmetics or dyes. When growing herbs, it’s important to know the Latin name of the plant. For example, there are many Salvias avail able in the nurseries but not all are herbs, nor should they be ingested. In this case you would want Garden Sage or Common Sage, Salvia officinalis or Pineapple Sage, Salvia elegans. There are many reasons to grow your own herbs. Herbs are a healthy way to add flavor to food and you always have fresh herbs available. And there is no comparison when it comes to quality or cost. You’ll never want to buy those pathetic little bundles they sell at the grocery store again. Herbs are beautiful and pollinators love them. Most herbs make lovely ornamental plants so you’re getting two plants for the water of one. You’ll need at least four to six hours of sun, well-drained soil and access to water. They can be grown with veggies, in a bed of their own or among orna mental plants. Most herbs grow well in containers also. A nice layer of mulch is helpful to prevent weeds and help keep the soil cool. Deep, infrequent watering is best. Planting your perennial herbs in spring or fall will give them a chance to acclimate during the cooler weather. Herbs prefer a light dose of fertilizer, as in half strength. A balanced fertilizer at planting time and then annually in the spring should be all your peren nial herbs need. Some perennial herbs that grow well in El Dorado County in addi tion to sage, are thyme Thymus vulgaris, mint Mentha spp., rosemary Rosmarinus officinalis, lavender Lavandula spp., lemon verbena Aloysia triphylla, winter savory Satureja montana, chives Allium schoenoprasum and oregano Origanum vulgare. Another advantage of keeping his practice small is that, because he sees every patient one at a time, Dr. Stanec can be very thorough and immediately answer any questions that come up. He is also able to really respect his patients’ time. “I am almost always early or on time,” said Dr. Stanec. “My patients know that, so they’re usually early or on time for their appointments, too. It’s a win win for everyone.”

For more information or to sched ule an appointment with Dr. Stanec, visit drstanec.com or call 530-676-6500.

Dr. Stanec is located at 3955 Cam eron Park Drive — in Cameron Park. His office is right near the Goldorado Shopping Center, directly across from the new Walgreens on Palmer Drive, and is very conveniently located for all of his patients. The move is just one more way Dr. Stanec shows his commitment to providing the best possible care for his patients. “I look forward to going to work and getting to see who’s on the sched ule every day,” said Dr. Stanec. “I love the work that I do and am proud to do really quality work. Originally I’d planned to be a little bigger, but then I realized I liked it this way. I really enjoy my patients and this way I can get to know them well.”

Susan Laird The Arts

The Arts: 2022-23 arts season sparkles with anticipation Autumn arrives this month and pump kin spice season is already in our local stores — along with Halloween, Thanksgiving (if you can find it) and Christmas. Crazy mass merchandis ing aside, this is a time for joyfulKidsbeginnings.arebackin school. Apple Hill’s orchards are filled with abundant fruit. And the performing arts community calendar is back. And — dare I say — better than ever. There are some choice treats in store, including two operas. So pull out your calendars and save some dates.

Our premier orchestra for the tricounty area has five concerts planned, plus three community enrichment concerts on the docket. Visit folsom kalkesymphony.com for specific dates, concert locations and tickets. The first of the free community enrichment concerts with Maestro Peter Jaffe at the baton is at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 1, at El Dorado Hills Town Center. Symphony al Fresco will delight with blockbuster melodies from the classics to rock, jazz and soul. Bring a lawn chair, blanket and the whole family. If you are reading this a few days later and missed it, fear not. There is a great season ahead. The main FLS season kicks off Oct. 22 with Brilliant Gems. This concert features violinist Yi-Jia Susanne Hou, who will perform Sibelius’ “Violin Concerto” with the symphony. Hou is an internationally recognized talent (the FLS spoils us with the talent they attract to our region). We are blessed. Moving on to December, the talent treasures continue as Broadway tal ent Teri Bibb and the FLS serenade in Season Celebration, Dec. 10-11. Expect secular, Christian and Jewish melodies as we celebrate a time of the year set apart forFollowinghope. the New Year, FLS has five more concerts. These include an annual concert for kids and families on March 11 and one concert that simply is not to be missed: a John Williams Spectacular. Williams is the renowned movie score composer known for such outstanding works as “Star Wars,” “Harry Potter,” “Raiders of the Lost Ark” and many more. If there is such a thing as true “crossover” art, Williams’ work is it. This is wildly popular classical music set to the movies. Two con certs on June 3 & 4 will sell out. Get your tickets as soon as possible.

PhilharmonicSacramento & Opera A little further down the hill from us in the state capital, the Sacramento Philharmonic & Opera plans five con certs and two operas for 2022-23. Visit sacphilop era.org for specific program content on the concerts and ticket information. The return of opera to the Sacramento area is a big deal. The economic down turn a decade ago led to the demise of Sacramento Opera. Yet, like a phoenix, the spirit of this art form of beautiful music and theater will not be denied. Audiences can look forward to “Pagliacci” (Feb. 25) and “La Bohème” (May“Pagliacci”20). is Italian for “clowns.” It is an Italian opera with music and liberetto by Ruggero Leoncavallo. First performed in Milan in 1892 under the baton of Arturo Toscanini, it is renowned for its famous aria, “Vesti La Giubba.” Talented artists including Enrico Caruso, Luciano Pavarotti and Plácido Domingo made famous record ings from this opera and its popularity continues into the 21st century. “La Bohème” by composer Giacomo Puccini premiered in Turin, Italy in 1896 — also under the baton of Toscanini. It remains popular in the operatic repertoire to this day. Performances are at the SAFE Credit Union Performing Arts Center, pre viously known as the Sacramento Community Center Theater on L Street. Many musicians at Sacramento Philharmonic are also at Folsom Lake Symphony. Expect standout perfor mances.Audiences are hungry for the arts — especially opera after all these years. These concerts will sell out early and some within this month. So hop online, pull out your calendar and plan some special afternoons and evenings with the ones you love. It’s never too early to plan for holiday gift giving. Happy autumn! Send your event for consideration in Susan’s column to slaird@handywriting.com.

There are no shortcuts to investment success — you need to establish a longterm strategy and stick with it. This means you’ll want to create an investment mix based on your goals, risk tolerance and time horizon — and then regularly review it to ensure it’s still meeting your needs. In fact, investing for the long term doesn’t necessarily mean you should lock your investments in forever. Throughout your life, you’ll likely need to make some changes. Of course, everyone’s situation is di erent and there’s no prescribed formula of when and how you should adjust your investments. But some possibilities may be worth considering.Forexample, a few years before you retire, you may want to reevaluate your risk exposure and consider moving part of your portfolio into a more conservative position. When you were decades away from retiring, you may have felt more comfortable with a
