Alison Sahaida finished third at the 102nd CIF State Track and Field Championships at Buchanan High School in Clovis May 28. Sahaida was joined by fellow Trojans Kyle Burns, Luke Stewart and Quinn Walker as well as Hannah Crone from El Dorado High School in California’s most prestigous high school track meet.

As Abriana Stewart walked across the Oak Ridge High School graduation stage in El Dorado Hills, she was holding a larger-than-life cutout of her twin brother Luke’s face. Luke was down at Buchanan High School in Clovis for the 102nd CIF State Track and Field Championships along with fellow Trojan seniors Alison Sahaida and Kyle Burns, who were having a graduation of their own. The trio put on caps and gowns and Oak Ridge coach Rob Fairley called out their names and gave them their diplomas. It was a precursor to the next day when Sahaida would again have her name called after finishing third in pole vault. Luke Stewart was racing in the 400 meters after scorching through the SacJoaquin Section Masters field the previous weekend at Davis High School, where Sahaida, Burns, Oak Ridge junior Quinn Walker and El Dorado senior Hannah Crone also qualified for state. Crone set numerous El Dorado records this season that had stood for decades and found herself competing against California’s best long jumpers two days after her graduation ceremony. In the Masters meet she leaped 18 feet, 6 inches. Another jump of that distance would have placed her in the top 10 at the state championships. But it wasn’t to be. Crone fouled on her first jump. Then on her second

jump she flew through the air and it might have been the jump to send her to the finals when a white flag went up. The referee signaled that it was a legal jump but the electronic measuring was still calibrating and it could not be counted. Crone’s day at state ended when she committed a foul on her rejump. The following week at the El Dorado track and field awards banquet, the future University of California, Davis, Aggies student-athlete — who recorded a 4.18 grade point average this school year — was presented the Athlete of the Decade award by El Dorado head coach Peanut Harms. Quinn Walker and Luke Stewart of Oak Ridge ran the 800-meter and 400meter, respectively. Walker was lining up to start the two-lap race just 5 miles down the road from where she helped lead the girls cross country team to a third place finish at state in the fall. The race went at an extremely fast pace and Walker never gave in. She took 22nd at state and held on to her spot by less than a second. Stewart — who is speaking with schools, but remains uncommitted — nearly topped his personal best time in the 400 that he set at Masters. In the one-lap race, it was a sprint to finish from the beginning. His blistering fast time of 49.36 seconds was good for 15th and he was the top finisher in the Sac-Joaquin Section. El Dorado Hills Fire Department and Cal Fire firefighters fought flames during dry, windy conditions Tuesday afternoon after a grass fire broke out near the Highway 50 eastbound Latrobe Road offramp. The May 31 blaze started at approximately 1:10 p.m., burning in a southward direction toward the Blue Shield campus, according to EDH Fire Deputy Chief Michael Lilienthal. “The fire threatened the Blue Shield building, Gracious Retirement and the rear fences behind the Stonebriar subdivision,” he told Village Life. For more than two years Heritage Village residents have locked horns with the El Dorado Hills Community Services District over a park adjacent to their over-55 active adult community. Now, organized as Concerned Residents of EDH Heritage Village, the nonprofit group has filed a complaint for declaratory and injunctive relief with the El Dorado County Superior Court against developer Lennar Homes, the EDHCSD and CSD General Manager Kevin Loewen. Their grievances center around Heritage Village Park, located off Carson Crossing Drive — the CSD’s first park west of Latrobe and south of Highway 50. Its 4.65 acres will offer an inclusive playground, tennis and pickle ball courts, bocce courts and an open grass area. “I think it is important to note that we are not seeking damages, but rather seek resolutions in the public interest,” clarified Robert Williams, CRHV president. “After over two years, we felt the only option was to litigate on behalf of the Heritage community, El Village Life photo by Noel Stack
