Fun at the fly-in

Armory land leased for 83-unit apartment plans Andrew Vonderschmitt Staff writer Plans are in motion to develop the old Armory site next to the El Dorado County Fairgrounds in Placerville. Backed by an executive order aimed at abating the housing crisis, the state of California has granted a 55-year lease to Jamboree Housing Corporation out of Irvine to demolish the Armory and construct and manage affordable housing on the mostly state-owned parcel. The plans and mitigated negative declaration for the proposed 83-unit apartment building are available to the public for review and comment through June 10. Placerville Development Services Director Pierre Rivas delivered a report on the proposed Placerville Armory Affordable Housing Project at the May 24 City Council meeting. The property at 212 Armory Drive has long been considered for various uses, including a temporary homeless shelter. Formerly an Army facility and Army

Attendees of the Georgetown Airport Divide for the Kids Fly-In May 28, above, get an up-close look at a Sikorsky S-70i Cal Fire Hawk purpose-built for the needs of fighting wildland fires across California. It was one of dozens of aircraft and other vehicles on display from the California Highway Patrol, CALSTAR, El Dorado County and Placer Couty sheriff’s offices and El Dorado County Search and Rescue. Folks could also catch a flight with pilots of historical aircraft who came out for the event from all over the state. Even four-legged visitors got a chance to sit in the driver’s seat — Tsuki the fire dog hopped into a Georgetown Fire Department engine, right.

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development awarded El Dorado County $1,498,000 in support of the Diamond Springs Village Apartments project. The county will utilize the funding awarded through the Community Development Block Grant to acquire property for the affordable housing project. The grant funding is awarded to local jurisdictions that have goals of providing affordable housing and infrastructure for community development. The Diamond Springs Village Apartment project was approved by the planning commission in 2018 and is one of the affordable housing projects proposed for the area. The apartment complex would provide 81 affordable multifamily, workforce housing units at 6035 Service Drive off Black Rice Road. Other affordable housing projects proposed for the area include the 382-unit Dorado Oaks on Faith Lane, the 149-unit El Dorado Senior Village on Koki Lane and 75-unit Piedmont Oaks north of Black Rice Road.

Caldor Fire still holding heat after winter Krysten Kellum Editor

A snag burned by the Caldor Fire smolders after months of winter weather.

Grizzly Flat residents Kathy Gallagher and Paul Johnson were riding their quads in a south county area razed by the Caldor Fire last week when they spotted what looked like a smoldering campfire. Off Leoni Road between Leoni Meadows and Grizzly Flat, it wasn’t in an area where the two thought someone would be likely to set up camp — inside the burn scar and up a steep hill. Stephanie Bishop, public information officer with California Interagency Incident Management Team 4, confirmed the smoke was rising from a snag that held the Caldor Fire’s heat over winter. Johnson called the smoldering snag in to authorities, n
