Keltbray’s Holly Price appointed first female president of the NFDC Keltbray Group is proud to announce that its Training and Development Director, Holly Price, has today been appointed as the first female president of the National Federation of Demolition Contractors (NFDC).

This historic moment was announced during the NFDC’s annual AGM on International Women’s Day. Starting her demolition career at only 16, as one of only a handful of women in the industry, Holly trained to be an Explosives Engineer and became the only female Explosives Engineer in the UK. Holly has been the Training and Development Director at Keltbray Group since 2007 and is passionate about creating a more gender balanced workplace within the construction sector. Coming from an apprenticeship background, Holly is able to connect with and inspire the sector’s future leaders, making her a role model not only to young women who are starting their careers in the sector, but also to people already working within it. Whilst her new position at the NFDC is a highly anticipated change within the sector, Holly previously served as Chair of the NFDC’s London & Southern Member Region and 2nd Vice President of the NFDC. Commenting on the appointment

A-Plant receives eighth consecutive RoSPA Gold Award

“We have an excellent track record for our health and safety performance from a wide range of industry bodies and have even introduced a number of company-wide health and safety initiatives to encourage employees to reflect on safe working practices and undertake extra safety training. “Last year, our annual Safety Week shined a light on mental health in the workplace and the company’s Work Safe Home Safe campaign, continued to encourage teams to take personal responsibility for the way they work.” A-Plant were presented with the award during Rospa’s Health and Safety Awards ceremony in Birmingham on 10th May 2019.

FM Conway Wins Prestigious Sustainability Award

Leading infrastructure services company FM Conway continues to be recognised for its sustainability credentials, winning the Better Society award for Waste Management and Recycling Programme of the Year 2019. Now in their fifth year, the Better Society awards celebrate commercial organisations that are investing in more equal, ethical and sustainable ways of working. FM Conway fought off stiff competition from Greene King and the London Waste and Recycling Board among others to be awarded the 2019 waste management accolade at a prestigious ceremony held at London Marriott Hotel Grosvenor Square on Thursday. Over the past 30 years, FM Conway has invested in an industry-leading network of asphalt manufacturing and recycling plants, processing waste materials from its live highway construction sites for re-use on future projects. It now recycles over 250,000 tonnes of asphalt from roads in London and the South East each year. The business also recycles gully waste from its water and drainage management operations at a specialist drainage treatment plant in Dartford – the only wet waste recycling plant of its

kind in the UK. 95 per cent of the input materials sent to the plant are reused instead of being sent to landfill as hazardous waste. McGee made May purple for the Stroke Association!

Last month, hundreds of staff at McGee took part in The Stroke Association’s fundraising campaign, ‘Make May Purple’. The buy-in, enthusiasm, and generosity from everyone on site and in the office was incredible. Project sites across the Capital including Admiralty Arch, Euston Station and Sampson House turned purple in support of the campaign with site teams swapping their yellow hi-vis for purple ones and hosting tasty bake sales. McGee’s offices in Hatfields and Wembley also got involved with staff dressing in purple, taking part in office quizzes and delving into a feast of home-baked goods. McGee’s very own Stroke Association tipper lorry also put in an appearance at several events for a perfect purple photo opportunity! Through support for the 2019 Make May Purple campaign, McGee staff raised more than £1,600 – Every penny going straight to The Stroke Association to help support the services they offer and funding invaluable research to help beat stroke. Make May Purple for stroke is the charity’s annual stroke awareness month, taking place every May. Rebecca Broad, Regional Fundraiser at The Stroke Association, said: “It has been fantastic to see how hard everyone at McGee has worked on their wonderful Make May Purple events across the various sites in London. We are so

grateful for all of their continued support and we are so excited to continue our work with McGee in rebuilding lives after Stroke.” Earlier this year, McGee announced The Stroke Association as its Charity of the Year 2019 in the year McGee is celebrating its 60th anniversary. Since then, a whole host of events have been taking place across its offices and sites to help raise awareness of stroke as well as vital funds. One in seven people in the UK are diagnosed as having high blood pressure. For every 10 people diagnosed with high blood pressure, seven remain undiagnosed and untreated. High blood pressure is the biggest risk factor for stroke that we can control and can affect people of all ages and lifestyles, yet it often has no symptoms. Because of this fact, McGee has invited The Stroke Association to deliver stroke awareness talks to staff, providing the chance for blood pressures to be quickly checked. Through this initiative, one hundred McGee employees have had their blood pressure checked to date. Other fundraising events this year have involved staff tackling The London Marathon and Resolution Run, with these events combined raising a remarkable £7,120! Stroke strikes every five minutes and destroys lives. McGee’s efforts this year are helping to rebuild them. For more information about The Stroke Association, please visit www.stroke.org.uk

AFI win landmark RoSPA Gold Medal for health and safety practices AFI group of companies, one of the UK's leading powered access specialists, has been awarded a landmark RoSPA Gold Medal presented to those organisations which have achieved five to nine consecutive Gold Awards. The RoSPA Awards scheme, which receives entries from organisations around the world, recognises achievement in health and safety management systems, including practices such as leadership and workforce involvement.

Nigel Stevens, HSEQ Director, AFI Group Services said: “We are delighted to have been awarded the prestigious RoSPA Gold Medal as a result of achieving the Gold Award for the fifth consecutive year. Mabey Hire’s propping solutions support the construction of £100m flood barrier to help protect over 14,000 homes

Leading temporary works specialist Mabey Hire has announced its work with BAM Nuttall to help enable the installation of a new flood barrier in the River Haven. Due for completion in 2020, the floodgate will better protect over 14,000 homes and businesses from tidal flooding in Boston, Lincolnshire. The £100m Boston Barrier project, led by contractors BAM Nuttall and Mott Macdonald Joint Venture (BMM JV) on behalf of the Environment Agency, follows floods in 2013 where a tidal surge overtopped banks of the River Haven and damaged over 800 properties in the area. Mabey Hire, contracted by BMM JV, has provided a series of struts and frames to support the walls of the water tight excavation area, known as a cofferdam, in which the new floodgate is being built. Mabey Hire’s structural supports are coping with differing load of 0kN/m up to approximately 500kN/m, coming from the varying currents and tide levels of the

water surrounding three of the cofferdam’s four walls. The fourth is bordered by the river embankment resulting in an eccentrically loaded structure. Mabey Hire designed the struts with these different load cases in mind, to ensure the cofferdam remains stable and watertight as works progress. The engineering experts supplied a Supershaft Plus hydraulic frame, alongside Super Bracing struts made up of 600 box sections and a 350T ram unit. To stabilise the structure, bespoke box sections were created and welded to the rear of the frame, which sit in the pan of the sheet pile wall to ensure the eccentric loads are distributed around the cofferdam walls. Mabey Hire’s on-site advisor worked with BAM to install the frames in December 2018, which will be used until the end of May. Steve Lowder, Project Director, BAM Nuttall comments: “Working with a cofferdam is always tricky, let alone with the issue 03

added challenge of varying and significant loads due to the tide range and the depth of excavation. Mabey Hire’s rapid strut design enabled us to secure the cofferdam as quickly as possible, so excavation work could progress quickly, safely and efficiently. We look forward to delivering this vital flood prevention scheme, which will protect thousands of homes and businesses from further flood damage.” Gordon MacDonald, CEO, Mabey Hire, comments: “This project is a prime example of our ability to provide bespoke, engineered solutions to unique challenges within a short period of time. Since the frames were installed, we’re on 24-7 call to support as needed. We’re proud to be working with BAM Nuttall to support this crucial work that will give peace of mind to both local residents and business owners.”

Women in the construction sector: how the industry is coming together to recruit and retain women The All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) for Excellence in the Built Environment announced last month that its seventh inquiry will examine how the recruitment and retention of more women in construction is one of the necessary steps in addressing the industry’s skills needs, particularly post-Brexit. Industry estimates suggest that construction in the UK will create over 168,000 jobs between 20192023. Demand to fill those roles, while large numbers of workers are retiring and while there is uncertainty over Brexit and the numbers of migrant workers available to support the UK workforce, means it is more important than ever to increase diversity to help address the skills shortage. The Chartered Institute of Building has responded to the APPG’s inquiry with an outline of what the

industry is doing to promote diversity and some examples of best practice. However, the CIOB has also noted that it’s important to walk the walk on this issue and that examining good practice and areas for improvement in-house are a must; the Institute cited examples of some progressive steps to support gender equality with the first female CEO taking up her role later this year and the Novus network in Manchester now comprising an allfemale committee. It’s also important to continue making the wider case within the industry so that diversity is consistently encouraged and supported. It’s essential that it’s seen not just as a box ticking exercise but a progressive and positive move which can, among other things, expand the workforce and improve the depth and breadth of skill sets available. As it says in the CIOB response, diversity in the workforce “can often

lead to increased earning potential.” A study by McKinsey & Company found a strong relationship between gender diversity and performance, with an increase of 3.5% in earnings before interest and taxes for every 10% increase in gender diversity in the senior executive team (and a 1.4% increase for the board). Rebecca Thompson FCIOB, a past President of the CIOB and Director of Thompson Heritage Consultancy, said: “I am delighted that this issue is being highlighted as it is something that needs to be addressed to improve diversity and inclusion within the construction workforce and the range of skills and experience available. As we’ve said in the response, it’s a powerful opportunity to advocate equality in the workforce, bringing expertise from other sectors and industries.”

Robertson wins big at leading industry awards

Two of Robertson’s most significant projects have received coveted accolades at the prestigious Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) Awards. TPremium spirits giant Edrington’s £140m Macallan Distillery and visitor experience in Speyside picked up the ‘Design through Innovation’ award at the Scotland ceremony, with judges commending the project team’s careful management of the environment, sustainability and local resources, particularly water, and the building’s innovative design. There was also success in the North East, with Whitley Bay’s iconic Spanish City regeneration project, which Robertson delivered for North Tyneside Council, awarded the ‘Tourism and Leisure’ title, with judges commending £10million project for transforming a declining waterfront building into a shining beacon of hope and prosperity. Derek Shewan, chief executive officer of Robertson said: “The awards celebrate the diverse range of skills and expertise that we have within the business – from the painstaking restoration and refurbishment of iconic buildings to delivering state of the art, innovative projects. “We’re incredibly proud to have

played a key role in the delivery of two hugely significant buildings that will go on to bring lasting benefits for the local community and economies for decades to come.” George McKenzie, Edrington’s UK Engineering Manager, said: “This award is testament to the vision, hard work, commitment and collaboration from our team and our partners. “Together, their unwavering commitment to excellence enabled us to deliver this unique and striking piece of contemporary architecture.” North Tyneside’s Elected Mayor, Norma Redfearn CBE, said: “We are immensely proud of our iconic Spanish City and the work that has gone into restoring it – so to see it claiming such a prestigious award is absolutely fantastic. “The Spanish City is incredibly important to the people of North Tyneside and part of the reason that our borough is so special. The work from Robertson absolutely did it justice and they did an excellent job of maintaining the heart and history of a building that means so much to our community.” Adam Serfontein, chair of the judging panel for the RICS Awards, said: “A diverse range of innovative projissue 03

ects, of all sizes and budgets, made the shortlist this year and the winners are truly representative of our region’s best and most innovative built projects that are having a significant positive impact on their communities. “The teams behind these winning projects should be very proud of their exceptional achievements and contribution to the region.” Both projects will go on to compete against other regional winners at the national RICS Awards Grand Final in October in London for the chance to be crowned the overall UK winner in their respective category. The titles add to a string of high profile accolades for both projects, with the Macallan Distillery, which officially opened in June 2018, awarded ‘Building of the Year’ title at the Institute of Civil Engineers (ICE) Saltire Awards and the Structural Timber Awards’ ‘Winner of Winners’ title. Spanish City was commended by the Civic Trust in March and in April won two categories – ‘Planning for a Successful Economy’ and ‘Excellence and Planning for Heritage and Culture’ – at the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI) Awards for Planning Excellence 2019.

Galliford Try scores further Defence success Galliford Try announces that its Building business has signed contracts worth a combined £30.9m within the defence sector.

Firstly, Galliford Try has been appointed by BAE Systems in a £23m deal to construct new facilities to station a reformed Typhoon squadron at RAF Coningsby in Lincolnshire. The new buildings will house 12 Squadron, which is a joint RAF/Qatar Emir Air force unit, following the sale of 24 Typhoon fighter jets to the Qataris. The squadron building will consist of part modular and part traditional construction, while ancillary buildings will comprise aircraft hangars, flight line shelters and a training building.

Meanwhile, in Devon, Galliford Try has been appointed by the Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO) to provide a new accommodation block for personnel at the Commando Training Centre Royal Marines (CTCRM). The £7.9m contract will see the creation of a 181bed block for junior ranks, as well as supporting offices, and a communal area at the site near Lympstone. The block will comprise of eightbed rooms and one ten-bed room.

With a combined value of £500m across value banded Lots, Kier secured a place on the high value Lot 5, which was its chosen Lot. This will deliver projects valued £10m+ with an estimated value of £108m.

This collaborative framework is owned by the six North Wales Local Authorities of Denbighshire, Conwy, Flintshire, Gwynedd, Wrexham and Anglesey. London’s newest station opens as part of major railway upgrade

London’s newest station, Meridian Water in Enfield was opened yesterday (3 June 2019) by Rt Honourable Chris Grayling MP Secretary of State for Transport and Heidi Alexander, Deputy Mayor of London for Transport.

Representatives from Network Rail, VolkerFitzpatrick, Enfield and Haringey councils and Greater Anglia, who will manage the new station, also joined the official opening. Meridian Water is at the heart of a £6bn development of the area being led by Enfield Council which will see 10,000 new homes and the creation of thousands of jobs. It replaces the existing Angel Road station, providing improved accessibility for passengers with stairs and lifts for step-free access across the railway and to the enclosed concourse that features a bespoke golden panel design. The station is part of the Lee Valley Rail Programme and has been delivered by Network Rail and principal

A package of upgrades to this part of the West Anglia line that runs from Stratford to Meridian Water, include: • 5.5km of new track to enable two more trains per hour to run between Stratford and Meridian Water from this September. • Improvements at Tottenham Hale station including a new platform and a new accessible footbridge with lifts and an escalator, reducing congestion around the station. • Upgrades at Northumberland Park station, including building an additional platform and new stepfree footbridge across the railway for passengers and the community. • Refurbishing or replacing several rail bridges, upgrading signals, in-

Lee Valley Rail Programme Northumberland Park has a new platform served by the third track. An accessible footbridge with ramps has also been constructed and opened to facilitate a safe place for passengers to wait for their trains particularly during event days at the nearby stadium on White Hart Lane. The ramps provide an accessible route across the railway for wheelchair users, bicycles and buggies while a lift will be available to serve the new island platform. Tottenham Hale station is a busy interchange between the main line services and the Victoria Line. For that reason, a new accessible footbridge with stairs, lifts and an escalator to ease congestion and provide better passenger flow around the station has been built. Morgan Sindall Construction reveals more exciting plans for Paddington Village Morgan Sindall Construction has announced the submission of planning applications for two of its forthcoming projects at Liverpool City Council’s flagship development site, Paddington Village.

Located within the 450-acre Knowledge Quarter Liverpool (KQ Liverpool) Mayoral Development Zone, Paddington Village is a £1 billion expansion scheme east of the city centre which, when complete, will be a key part of one of the UK’s leading innovation districts – incorporating new science, technology, education and health space. At 30 acres, Paddington Village is being developed by Liverpool City Council in three phases: Paddington Central, Paddington South and Paddington North, with Morgan Sindall Construction undertaking numerous projects as part of the first phase. The projects at Paddington Central, formerly the site of a now relocated secondary school, include a 221 bed Novotel hotel with a value of circa £40 million which Ryder Architecture has now submitted its plans. Located on the corner plot facing the New Royal Hospital and university campus, the hotel will be in a prominent position, with key frontage onto both Grove Street and Mount Vernon Road. The thirteen-storey, four-star hotel will be franchised under the Accor Novotel brand and operated by Legacy Hotels & Resorts, comprising both short and long stay suites. The application also includes plans to include three flexible meeting spaces, a co-working space, a gym and addition to public realm. The food and beverage amenities will

include a restaurant, bar and coffee bar and a roof terrace. Additionally, the planning application for a multi-storey car park with a combined heat and power (CHP) energy centre located on the ground floor has been resubmitted by architects KKA. The building is to be located on the Elm Grove site within Paddington Village Central, currently occupied by residential properties, which have been purchased by the city council and will be demolished as part of preparatory works for the site. Although the initial plans were approved last year, a subsequent analysis has revealed that a larger capacity for the car park is needed to meet the requirements of the educational, residential, medical research and commercial developments that will populate Paddington Village, as identified following discussions with leading institutions in the KQ undertaken by Liverpool City Council. The revised car park design has seen the facility increase from eight storeys to 12, enlarging the capacity from 1,088 to 1,245 bays, with their size having also been increased. The car park will comprise a combination of standard and accessible bays, as well as 12 electric vehicle recharging bays with capacity to increase this number in the future. The building will also offer parking for cycles and motorcycles and a Facilities Manager’s office has also been incorporated, offering active frontage to the building on

Smithdown Road. The size and accommodation requirements of the energy centre have been refined by specialist consultants Vital Energi, also based upon a revised analysis of the developments within Paddington Village. The centre will now sit on the ground floor of the car park and be accessed from Smithdown Lane. The District Heating Network will deliver a sustainable power and heating source for Paddington Village, with district heating regarded as the lowest carbon footprint of all fossil fuel burning energy systems. Mayor of Liverpool Joe Anderson said: “This new hotel and the car park and energy centre are all vital to the completion of our Paddington Village site. They are crucial pieces of infrastructure needed to support all the amazing businesses that are flocking to this gamechanging development. The city council is delighted with the progress to date and we are already looking at the next phases of expansion and how we can attract more high-quality companies and jobs to the city.” Barry Roberts, managing director, Morgan Sindall Construction, North West, said: “This is a milestone moment for Paddington Village. Topping Out Trinity View

Successful topping out event for new 614 bed purpose-built student accommodation development, Trinity View, Coventry, on track and on budget for opening September 2019

Crosslane Student Developments (“Crosslane”), part of the Crosslane Property Group, celebrated the topping out of its latest PurposeBuilt Student Accommodation (“PBSA”) development in Coventry on 29 April 2019, which will open on time and on budget for the start of the 2019/20 academic year following a tight construction timetable that began in January 2018. The new 614 bed development has an expected gross development value of approximately £55 million upon practical completion. The ceremony was conducted by Mike Moran, Development Manager for Crosslane Student Developments and Graham Taylor, Project Manager for the RG Group, and attended by the team of agents, contractors and professional partners working on the project, as well as the Prime Student Living team - the student ac-

The new development called ‘Trinity View’ on account of being able to see the infamous three spires of Coventry from the 10th floor rooftop terrace, is located to the south west of the city centre, at the junction of Friars’ Road and St Patrick’s Road, within the Coventry Ring Road. It is conveniently placed, less than ten minutes’ walk from the main campus of Coventry University and less than five minutes’ walk to the city’s mainline train station, which offers regular bus services for students attending Warwick University. Winvic completes construction of Rushden Lakes, Northamptonshire’s premier leisure and retail destination

The Third and final phase features 30,000 sq ft of boutique retail space and an events piazza

Winvic Construction Ltd, a leading main contractor specialising in turnkey solutions for industrial, build-to-rent, student accommodation, commercial and retail projects, has completed Phase 3 of Rushden Lakes for LXB Retail Properties and fund The Crown Estate. It marks the final step in the creation of the Northamptonshire lakeside retail and leisure complex, which Winvic first started constructing in January 2016. The third and final phase – Garden Square – has extended the existing retail space, and united the south side of Rushden Lakes with Phase 2’s western leisure terrace, which was handed over in January 2019. Winvic has therefore carefully managed the process of working within a live retail environment during the construction of Phase 2 and 3 and, as with the initial delivery, controlled complex programming to accommodate a large number of distinct enhancements requested by tenants. All specialist fit out contractors were able to commence on time, and phased handovers have been successfully completed allowing leisure operators and stores to open to the public as soon as possible.

Garden Square comprises ten high quality units – totalling 30,000 sq ft – which will soon be occupied by a range of leading retailers including Skechers, Barbour, Hotter, Beaverbrooks and Three. Final fit out works are currently being undertaken by specialists and it is expected the 14-screen cinema will be open at the end of June, and Garden Square retail units in the coming months. As the name Garden Square suggests, the piazza which the boutique retail units surround also features a unique, enclosed garden space for visitors to enjoy. The concept was to provide a quiet, green space for shoppers that could also be transformed into a location for outdoor events and pop-up shops. Garden Square comprises: • Insect habitats • Logs and boulders to encourage natural play • Biodiverse planting and trees perfect for bees and butterflies • Bronze ‘knitted leaf’ sculptures set in the paving • A drinking fountain • USB charging points The third phase is in line with the natural and distinctive design ethos of Rushden Lakes, which is surrounded by 200 acres of Nene Wetlands. Winvic has successfully completed all phases of the retail and leisure destination on time and to budget, with works including design, civils, infrastructure, build, landscaping and fit out. Synergy Hire acquires first Hitachi Zaxis-6 mini excavators in the UK Synergy Hire Limited has taken delivery of the first Zaxis-6 mini excavators in the UK. The Letchworth-based company – a subsidiary of Hitachi Construction Machinery Co., Ltd. – is also the first to offer Stage V-compliant mini excavators to the growing UK rental market. Synergy Hire’s large fleet of Hitachi construction machinery includes the ZX26U-6, ZX48U-6 and ZX85US-6 mini and compact excavators, as well as a range of medium excavators from the ZX130-6 to ZX210LC-6. The Zaxis-6 mini and compact excavators were unveiled by Hitachi Construction Machinery (Europe) NV at Bauma in April 2019. JCB unveils new One Machine Solution for Roads Maintenance

Backhoe loader world leader JCB is to introduce a 3CX Compact Highways Master – a one machine solution for roads and highways maintenance.

The brand new model has been designed to specifically meet the needs of highway contractors, local councils and rental businesses. Based on the popular 3CX Compact backhoe loader, the Highways Master has been developed over a three-year period with customers in the road maintenance industry. As a result, the Highways Master is a solution that has been driven by the sector, offering industry-first features designed to transform traditional highway maintenance operations in terms of safety, productivity and versatility. The Highways Master is differentiated with a dedicated white with red chevrons livery, complete with Chapter 8 safety decals. The machine will be equipped with a skid steer loader quick hitch on the front loader arms and a SMART attachment integration system, to make it easy to carry out a range of tasks with buckets and a wide variety of specialist attachments. The SMART system allows automatic switchover of the machine’s electronics, to suit some third-party attachment operating systems, for maximum versatility. The increased adaptability has been matched by enhanced hydraulic power, as the front loader auxiliary lines now deliver 120

Duck-in and Diving – new wheeled Hyundai for Cornish Plant man!

Cornish plant man Kirk Hough has developed a liking for the Hyundai brand over the past few years, having purchased his first 14 tonne class R 140LC-9A back in 2013, K Hough Contractors Ltd are now running four machines comprising two x HX140L’s, a 22 tonne HX220L and a R 55W-9A wheeled excavator which has become a really useful addition to the fleet, even surpassing Kirk’s expectations of it. All of Kirk’s machines are Swedish inspired with the three tracked excavators featuring Engcon tiltrotators, while the ‘baby duckling’ was

specified with a Steelwrist unit, but there is a lot more to this duck than meets the eye! The seed of an idea for a baby duck was first planted in Kirk’s mind when about a year previous to buying the machine, he had travelled up to the Molson Equipment yard in Avonmouth to look at something else. At the time of his visit there were some roadworks going on outside the depot and working alongside a 5-tonne tracked mini excavator was a Hyundai R 55W-9A wheeled excavator, Kirk was quite taken by the machine’s ability, ver-

satility and the speed it could move around, it just seemed to be a perfect little machine. Kirk agreed a deal with Tom Wilson at Molson and signed on the dotted line. As a fan of the Swedish way of working Kirk had the machine specified up in true Scandinavian style. It has its own Ifor Williams trailer for which Molson’s fitted a towing hitch onto the blade. This is used to carry the machines arsenal work tools which currently include five buckets, grading beam, forestry flail and an auger.

The machine which tips the scales at 5550kgs, sits on a set of Vredestein Floatation + 480/45-17 low ground pressure tyres and features a full LED working light package, prop guard protection, reversible fan and joystick steering. The machine is powered by a 4cylinder Yanmar 4TNV98 diesel engine which offers a power output rating of 50kw (67hp) @2400rpm. This compact offering gives a maximum reach at ground level of 6200mm while maximum dig depth is 3800mm with a conservative slew speed of 7.8rpm. UK’s SECH buys Europe’s first CKE3000G UK-based SECH completes acquisition of Europe’s first 300 tonne capacity Kobelco CKE3000G crawler crane.

UK crane rental company SECH, which provides telescopic and lattice boom crawler cranes for hire across the UK from its headquarters in Hockley, Essex, just outside London, has completed the acquisition of the first 300 tonne capacity Kobelco CKE3000G at a special ceremony at Bauma, Munich, Germany (8-14 April, 2019). Speaking about the decision to buy the CKE3000G, Matt Cox, SECH’s managing director, said: “The CKE3000G is an exceptional crane with great lifting capacities. We have been running a Kobelco CKE1100G machine in our rental fleet for nearly two years now and after careful evaluation we chose Kobelco’s new CKE3000G because of its design and operational simplicity, Kobelco’s proven reliability and excellent performance. “Another plus for us, was that the new Kobelco CKE3000G also has duel winch operation (double drum spooling), allowing for heavier loads to be lifted – for example into much

deeper shafts with greater control and efficiency.” The CKE3000G has three lifting modes, including Standard model (maximum lifting capacity 300 tonne at 5.5 m), heavy lift (maximum lifting capacity 189.8 tonnes at 8.8 m), and super heavy lift (maximum lifting capacity 350 tonnes at 8 m). A multi-purpose, “allrounder”, the CKE3000G is suitable for a range of applications, loads and job sites. Attachments include fixed jib, heavy fixed jib and luffing jib. For heavier lifts there is a super heavy lift configuration, also with a luffing jib. Compared to the Kobelco 250-tonne capacity CKE2500G-2, the CKE3000G has greatly improved duties – the new machine lifts 40% more in standard specification and 60%

more when used with a luffer. In its SHL configuration it can

easily compete in the 400-tonne class. For ease of transport the width of all components is less than 3 m (10 ft), while power comes from a Scania 13-litre, 331kW engine that meets Stage IV/Tier 4 Final emission standards without the need for a particulate filter. Commenting on the deal, Mark Evans, Kobelco Cranes Europe’s sales & operations manager (Kobelco Construction Machinery Europe), said: “We are pleased to have completed the sale of the first 300tonne capacity CKE3000G for Europe to SECH. This is the first Kobelco crane of this size that has been sold into this all-important market and marks the first step in the next phase of Kobelco Cranes’ expansion of its product line-up for the region.”

Countrystyle Recycling Purchases 4 new JCB 457 wheeled loaders

On display will be Takeuchi’s newest models designed and built for hire. Showcasing will be the new TB2352 and TB250-2, ideal sizes for the small plant hire sector. Takeuchi with all Stage V ready machines right across the line-up are all geared up for low emission zones. For the larger plant hire fleets, Takeuchi will showcase the new 7 and 9-tonne excavators. The new 7-tonne TB370 is Takeuchi’s new generation machine and has a completely redesigned automotive styled interior with intuitive user’s operation, colour touch screen display plus jog dial controls, mono or 2-piece boom and tilt-up cabin powered by a 42.4 kW engine that delivers superior performance and attachment handling. A first showcase for the UK will be the TB220e battery powered mini. The TB220e is the latest model of Takeuchi’s lithium-ion battery lineup. TB220e comes standard with a 25kWh battery offering 8-hour working time that delivers the same performance as the TB216 diesel version. It has a spacious operator’s platform that features pilot operated joysticks and multi-informational display. New models to test drive on the demonstration area include the new 2.5 tonne towable TB225, in the larger weight class the TB2150R 15 tonne fixed boom will be available to test drive.

Privately-owned waste recycling business, Countrystyle Recycling, has further improved on-site handling efficiency at its flagship facility at Sittingbourne, Kent, with the introduction of four JCB 457 wheeled loaders.

Countrystyle provides specialist waste recycling, haulage and recovery services for a range of industrial products, including plasterboard, wood, general waste, dry mixed recyclables and organic green and food wastes. Two of the new JCB models will be deployed within the facility’s dedicated plasterboard recycling building; the remaining two units will operate within the wood yard at Ridham Dock, near Sittingbourne. Simulation Zone takes centre stage at Plantworx

Plantforce Rentals is bringing advanced simulation technology to Plantworx 2019. The new state-of-the-art zone, located in the indoor arena, will be the UK’s first fully interactive construction Simulation Zone of its size, which will promote virtual interactive training.

The new Zone was the brain child of Plantforce Rental’s Dale Hawkins, who is leading the way in simulation training, and has introduced this technology to tier one contractors on major infrastructure and rail projects such as HS2 and nuclear project Hinkley Point C. Will automation ever take off in Construction?

Increasing automation is met with excitement and fear in equal measure. But the benefits for mankind of autonomy are enormous, says Professor Paul Newman, Co-Founder of autonomous vehicle software company Oxbotica, and a professor based at Oxford University in the UK.

Professor Paul Newman is CoFounder of Oxbotica, the autonomous vehicles software company, as well as the Director of the Oxford Robotics Institute. He is also the BP Professor of Information Engineering at the University of Oxford, UK, and inventor of techniques that allow machines to know where they are, what surrounds them and what they should do next. Speaking on behalf of Volvo Construction Equipment, he tells us what automation might mean in terms of construction equipment. What is driving the urge to automate functions in construction equipment? It’s fundamentally about supercharging humans. It is about humans doing more because machines can do more – because of the way they operate. What needs to happen to make this possible? The way machines and vehicles operate is already changing. But for full autonomy we need to trust machines to be able to operate safely and effectively by themselves, with no dependence on infrastructure, no dependency on any external systems, no beacons, no cables, no markers, no white lines, no dependency on roads, not even dependency on GPS. When this is achieved all machines can work better for us. What technology is driving increased mobile machine autonomy? It’s the software. Sensors are important and there’s lots of interesting sensor technology coming

through. But the golden stuff is the algorithms. The way in which machines can understand space, the structure of space, the work space. How things are moving, what’s in them, the ability to take various sensor streams and for the machine to say: ‘Aha! I know where I am, what’s around me, and what I should do next’. Those are the three pillars of autonomy and get answered by software and algorithms. Will these systems allow machines to be intelligent and selflearning? Of course. It would be hard to do it any other way. Machines can learn, they have the optimization, the estimation and the algorithmic ability to operate at high speeds and in the real world. The ability to process streams of data from multiple sensors and think about redundancy and safety all at the same time. That’s the greatest thrill of working in this area – getting robots and machines to work out in the wild, in the mud, in the rain and in the glaring sun. When will we have autonomous construction machines? That’s not such a simple question to answer. We are a long way away from being able to produce a machine that can work in all places, at all times and in all applications. But for clearly understood and defined applications we are able to install, train-up and deliver machines today. Will autonomous machines be safer? Safety could be the number one ad-

vantage of autonomous machines. Today one of the highest causes of construction deaths is people being struck by construction equipment. That’s not okay, so we can create ‘guardian angel’ features that work in cooperation with human operators and simply say: ‘I’m just not going to let you hit anyone’. So, no accidents at all with autonomous machines? In all technology, in all environments, accidents happen. And they are awful. With autonomous machines there should be very few of them, but we should admit that there will be some accidents. They won’t be the kind of accidents that happen if a human was in control. Something like 80% of accidents on road are caused by failings that computers never ever have. Accidents often caused by boredom and distraction. Autonomy can cut those sorts of accidents to zero. Computers have an inhuman ability to concentrate – they never get bored. But the knockout blow for this technology is learning. Human operators take a long time, years

even, to become expert in driving their machines. But construction vehicles can be programmed ahead of their first day on site with all the data and learnings of all other machines that preceded them. From all around the world. From every accident that’s ever been recorded, everywhere. So, an accident in Kuala Lumpur in the morning really should reduce the chances of the same accident happening in London that afternoon. What’s the relationship between autonomy and connectivity? Autonomous machines should be able to operate independent of anything external. However, that’s not to say that if you do have connectivity you shouldn’t use it. It’s a nice-to-have, but the point is that you shouldn’t need it in order to succeed. Can autonomous machines deliver greater productivity by never having to go to the toilet? By never having to sleep? By never having to stop for lunch? I’ve got so many stories of why this is true. The answer is unequivocally, in capital letters, in flashing neon: YES. Can you quantify it? Autonomy will allow an operator to drive multiple machines rather than just one at a time. That’s what gets talked about most, but that’s not all. There are lots of second-order advantages that don’t get talked about. Potholes, for example, in off-road applications can cause all kinds of trouble. But the machine knows they’re coming, it knows they’re being made. So it moves slowly to the side, which means the tires last longer. The controlled acceleration and deceleration of these vehicles massively reduce fuel costs. Autonomous machines can work in complete darkness. Vehicles that are not being dispatched can turn themselves off. As these vehicles move around the site, they’re perceiving their world, but at the same time they’re doing full

Can autonomous machines have the same skill level as human operators? There are certain tasks that are, for the moment, beyond what machines can do. Take a very skilled excavator operator and the precise and delicate ways they control the buckets. It’s extraordinary. It’s a celebration of everything it is to have a human cortex. But actually, that same operator gets asked to do dreary and repetitive tasks – what a waste of that super brain. We might say there are things which we would want humans to do, and others that a machine can do ceaselessly in the middle of the night in the dark. It’s about empowering the genus of the human brain by taking away the monotonous tasks.

What about job losses from machines no longer needing operators? In the 1970s people feared that computers were going to take everybody’s jobs. Now look at all the jobs computers have created – we’ve got the best employment ever.

So autonomous machines don’t have to be the enemy? Technology is an enabler. It makes us healthier, wealthier, happier. It just does. This is like the next chapter, the next hammer in our toolkit. We’re going to build more things, because we can do it better. We’re going to build, and mine, and do more stuff because we can, be-

Jobs will change and new roles will be created gradually over time, there won’t be a big bang changeover. So, in construction and mining we’ll have whole crews of people who are upskilled to look after the autonomous machines. Can anything stop the rise of the robots? Machines and humans will work together for some time to come. There are places where machines will think: ‘This is really tricky – I need you human’. And the human goes: ‘I got it’. It’ll be a long time before anything comes near to the extraordinary skill of a human being. But then there are some roles that are simple and repetitive worksite tasks that autonomy systems can do better and more safely.

Exploring the potential for 5G in Construction

In a global first, Volvo Construction Equipment (Volvo CE) is among a small number of pioneering companies trialling 5G mobile connectivity. With the program set to make a big impact on construction innovation, we find out more from 5G expert Calle Skillsäter, Volvo CE's Technical Specialist for Connected Machines.

The 5G partner program by Telia and Ericsson is the first industrial application of 5G, with only a small number of companies across the Nordic countries taking part. For Volvo, it means testing the development of remote-controlled machines and finding out the real-world potential for autonomous solutions. Calle, what does this trial mean for Volvo CE? 5G allows us to transport data in ways that we could only ever dream about. A faster, more reliable mobile network will mean we're at the forefront of driving a much faster market implementation of technologies like automation. Something that had seemed impossible a few years ago is now a very real opportunity today. So, what exactly are you testing? And how is the test site laid out?

We have a 25 hectare test site where the remote-controlled wheel loader, the L180H, is located – and a simulator inside a tent about 100m away behind a concrete wall. The test track itself has a number of physical barriers, uphill and downhill tracks and rough terrain – all designed to mimic the real conditions of a construction site. At the moment, the simulator is actually quite close to the machine, but this is only so that we can be near the track to adjust the conditions. There really is no reason that the machine couldn't be located much further afield. How far? In 2017, we successfully placed a machine 400m below ground and controlled it from the surface. And when we first tested the technology back in 2015, we had an excavator placed in Eskilstuna and operated from Barcelona. So that

tells you the potential for remote operation. And now with the reduced latency that 5G provides, it really does mean you can achieve remote operation from extremely far away. But at a certain distance the latency in the network will be significant anyhow. How long will the trial go on for and what do you hope to achieve? We will be testing this technology for two years. Over this time, we will see the performance of the network evolve and get better. What is really exciting is that at this very early stage, we are in a unique position to iron out any problems and play a key role in actually influencing how 5G will work for industrial purposes when it is rolled out more widely. Of course, the goal for us here at Volvo CE, is that we want to make

this system so mature and so successful that we can test it with our customers. To see how this technology can function on a real construction site. Hopefully that will be something we can achieve by the end of the trial. Will you be testing technology out with other Volvo machines? Absolutely. The aim is that after the initial testing phase with the wheel loader, we will then be able to test it with the HX2 hauler concept machine to see whether it is possible to have a work cycle operated entirely using 5G. In principle, we can then test 5G with six to eight autonomous haulers transporting gravel across the site. It seems that mining offers some of the best potential for exploring this technology. Why is that? Mining can be dangerous – either for people operating the machines in remote locations or because of the fumes that are released after blasting rock. But if we can remove people from the site, then we are reducing the risk of accidents entirely. You'll also have the capability to operate several operations and sites from one central location – increasing productivity. Are there any other sectors that could benefit from 5G Automation? Absolutely, it's not just mining. The forestry industry could certainly benefit, as an industry where you have lots of incoming trucks loading and unloading on to trains, often at night. Clearly working at night offers some dangers for visibility so removing operators makes the operation more safe. And again, for really dangerous jobs in the steel industry or the energy sector, where physically moving material can risk explosion or toxic gas emissions, then removing people is clearly a good solution. But for construction it's really about boosting productivity? Safety is obviously a big factor, but

clearly 5G will have a direct positive impact on productivity. Today's remote control technology provides a delay which makes it very difficult to control a machine with any speed or precision, but 5G will be as good as real time. In addition, the picture quality is much better, video footage is in a better resolution and 5G provides a more reliable connection – all of which makes it easier for the operator in the simulator. What challenges have you experienced so far? We did find it hard to initially get the hardware. We are so early in the trial that we have trouble finding modems to communicate with the antenna. Telia has been useful in providing the right equipment for us to use. We are so early in trialing this technology that this obviously issue 03

has its advantages and disadvantages. And when these issues are resolved, when can we see 5G rolled out to the wider industry? It depends on different use cases in construction – how do they work, do they meet the demands of the industry, is it feasible for customers? 5G will come first to those that benefit the most, but it will take time to build the network and required infrastructure. For us here in the construction industry, and for static operations like a quarry or mine it really can come quite fast. The timing is good – our customers need connectivity and they want more data. And we're the ones providing the research to see just how possible it is.

Success of Blackline Safety System Leads to Expansion Across CEMEX Business

The success of a market-leading wireless safety system for its night-time cement truck drivers has encouraged CEMEX to implement the devices across other areas of the business, including asphalt and readymix.

Over 50 cement truck drivers, working from the Rugby, South Ferriby and Tilbury plants have used the Blackline G7 safety system for the last year. This solution is the only one in the world that offers work-anywhere wireless, two-way voice communication, monitoring for health events, gas leaks and injuries. They are ideal for those who are lone-working, particularly at night-time when drivers may feel more vulnerable. CEMEX’s main priority is ensuring the health and safety of all its employees and contractors, and it has now decided to explore implementation of the system for those working with readymix trucks in the south, and some of those in the asphalt sector of the business. Barrie Flitton, Operations Manager for Logistics at CEMEX, commented: “Keeping our workers safe is a consistent motivation for us as we develop our business and the systems we use. We invested in the Blackline Safety System because of its superior functionality

We want our drivers to feel confident and supported, whatever time of the day or night they are working.” Dave, one of CEMEX’s night-time drivers, added: “I have worked nights for a few years now delivering to quarries and unmanned sites in the dark and I used to worry about my safety at times. For the last year we have been using the Blackline G7 and I feel so much safer at night now; I don’t need to rely on someone to remember where I am and that I am on my own at an unmanned site. “The system for me works very well and is simple to use. The pager is easily activated by me by the switch or if I fall it goes off automatically and I get a call from a manager or despatch through the device. The GPS is also much improved and we now have the ability to set off a silent or audible alarm if needed.”

The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) has awarded McLaren Construction a prestigious award, in recognition of the company’s practices and achievements in helping its colleagues and subcontractors get home safely at the end of each working day. For the second year running, McLaren has achieved a Gold award in the internationally renowned RoSPA Health and Safety Awards, the longest-running industry awards scheme in the UK. A futuristic approach to safety work wear In its quest for zero harm, Amey is trialling an innovative robotic exosuit with operatives working on the Forth Bridges in Scotland, which aims to reduce the risks posed by manual handling tasks.

In partnership with Amey, Transport Scotland has purchased the suit to be trialled in its Forth Bridges Unit. The first of its kind in Scotland, the EksoVest is a new piece of safety work wear that sets out to reduce the likelihood of on-the-job injuries. The EksoVest is an external metal frame that mirrors elements of the human skeletal structure. It is powered by a series of springs and supports workers’ arms to assist them with tasks ranging from chest height to overhead, providing between 2.2kg to 6.8kg of lift assistance per arm, making lifting objects easier. The tasks that the operatives undertake on the Forth Bridges predominately require the use of the

upper body. The EksoVest is lightweight and has been deigned to alleviate strain on operatives’ arms who are working on tasks above chest height. Weighing 4.3 kilogrammes, the EksoVest is comfortable for operatives to wear in all conditions whilst still enabling them the freedom to move. Mark Arndt, Operating Company Representative for the Forth Bridges Unit, said: “Integrating technology into everyday tasks to reduce the risk of on-the-job injuries to my operatives, is the driving force behind trialling the EskoVest. The motorised skeletal vest not only has the capability to physically enhance the safety of our people, but it aims to lessen fatigue which will lead to an increase in productivity and a reduction in

sickness absence. “Our operatives have been wearing the vest to carry out a range of tasks including overhead grinding and welding to repair joints in the Forth Road Bridge, installing underdeck access, installing streetlighting and laying out and removing traffic management. These tasks require our operatives to manually handle weighted objects, so by providing them with a robotic vest that supports their skeletal structure and arms, I’m hoping that we can reduce the weight that they are managing and therefore the potential for injuries. “We are still at the early stages of this exciting trial which began at the start of April 2019 but we’re hopeful that this wearable technol-

ogy will enhance the wellbeing of our staff by making their jobs easier. This complements the range of other technological improvements being rolled out at the Forth Road Bridge as part of Transport Scotland’s drive for new innovations, including high definition VR models, wearable inspection tech, real-time big data harvesting and machine learning.” Through advancements in robotic innovation, the EksoVest aligns to the principles set out by Amey’s Vision 2030 to remove people from harm. By embracing and utilising this technology on the Forth Bridges, improvements can be made to the safety and wellbeing of operatives undertaking physically challenging and manual tasks. One of the employees who has trialled the EksoVest is Blair Masterton, a rigger at the Forth Road Bridge. He said: “This is definitely a good piece of kit in the right work situation. It’s easy to put on and there is a slight assist when lifting staging boards and other heavy items., It feels a bit tight and can get in the way when wearing a harness, but this trial should hopefully help to identify areas where improvements can be made.” Kenny Horn, a welder/fabricator at the Forth Road Bridge, also commented: “I found the EksoVest to be helpful when grinding above head height, although I eventually did get pins and needles in my arms after using it for a prolonged period!” The feedback gained from this trial will help to refine new technologies in a way that sees Amey’s front line operational staff aiding in the development process. The EskoVest trial is being watched with anticipation by other businesses within Amey to see the potential for utilising it for other tasks, such as waste collection and the installation of scaffolding.

Remote lift end operation and access platforms will also be offered. The Hydraload 555-210R will meet the changing requirements of contractors across the world, as a greater use of off-site pre-fabrication calls for heavier lift capacities and increased on-site versatility. Rotating telescopic handlers have become a genuine cost-effective replacement for smaller mobile cranes, offering rapid set-up and the ability to carry out technical lifting operations. CPA Announces Date and Venue for 2019 Conference

The Construction Plant-hire Association (CPA) has announced that this year’s CPA Conference will take place on Thursday 17th October 2019 at the Heart of England Conference and Events Centre in Fillongley near Coventry.

The CPA Conference is a one-day event organised by the CPA, the leading trade association for the plant hire sector in the UK. The CPA has over 1,600 members who supply 85% of hired plant to the construction industry. The sector generates over £4 billion and invests £1.3 billion in new equipment each year. This will be the fifth year that the CPA Conference has been held and it has become an essential entry in the calendar for senior figures in the plant hire industry. The Conference will comprise a full programme of speakers, and delegates will also have the opportunity to visit a number of exhibition stands from participating exhibitors. The Conference is once again being held at the Heart of England Con-

ference and Events Centre where it was last held in 2017, providing a large amount of indoor and outdoor exhibition space and with an easily accessible Midlands location, allowing more delegates to travel from across the UK. Molson Compact Equipment will be showing machines right across their new range of Kobelco compact excavators. From 0.8 to 9 tonne these ‘true blue’ machines have a reputation for operational smoothness, low noise levels, reliable construction and low fuel consumption. Visitors to the stand will be able to try out four models on the demonstration plot, trying their hand out on a number of operator challenges. One of these models for demo will be the brand new SK75SR-7 which was launched at Bauma in April. This unique event will bring to life drones of all shapes and sizes in the dedicated indoor demo, which is named the ‘fly zone’. The fly zone is located in an indoor purpose-built structure, comprising over 2,300 square meters of stand and flying space. The area will also benefit from an indoor public address system that can be utilised to engage with the watching public. The “demonstration fly zone” will contain construction equipment to add a touch of authenticity to the event. Safety will be a priority and

Primary Engineer and the Student Day It’s full steam ahead for the Primary and Secondary Engineer event at Plantworx which is taking place on the final day of the show (13th June). The event will form part of the Student Day, which Plantworx successfully piloted at the 2015 event.

Construction Industry joins forces to inspire next generation Collaborative event held at Derby College gives students a taste for construction.

Led by Wates Construction and funded by the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) and the Derby and Derbyshire Skills and Employment Board (D2SEB), the iConstruct event saw industry peers join forces to deliver a series of activities designed to increase students’ understanding of the building sector.

Construction Leadership Council: Future Skills Report

The Construction Leadership Council’s Skills Workstream has published its influential Future Skills Report which follows a wide ranging consultation exercise with a range of industry bodies, client organisations, the University of Cambridge, the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy and a large number of construction delivery organisations, including Laing O’Rourke.

This is a critical time for the industry: we are on the cusp of one of the greatest programmes of construction in history with a pipeline of more than £600bn - but we face significant challenges around skills, with 30% of the construction workforce set to retire in the next decade and the end to Freedom of Movement. The report put forwards three clear actions for industry: 1. Direct employment With such a fragmented industry and high proportion of micro-businesses construction has suffered from underinvestment in training and development. We call for clients to agree a code of employment where those who contribute to a project are directly employed, thereby ensuring it is in the employer’s best interest to train their staff and benefit from their improved productivity. 2. Encourage Smart Construction Create an environment where Smart Construction methods are encouraged through early design and procurement processes, thereby creating the demand for skilled employees which in turn drives employers to invest in the training, Smart Construction techniques and behaviours.
