The McLean Community Center

Who We Are, What We Do The McLean Community Center (MCC) was built and is funded by residents of Greater McLean for their use through a real estate tax surcharge, the result of a 1970 bond referendum (Small District 1A-Dranesville). Center facilities include the 383-seat Alden Theatre, the McLean Project for the Arts galleries, the Susan B. DuVal Art Studio, meeting and conference rooms, a rehearsal studio and a classroom/commercial kitchen. Local open clubs and organizations use the Center for their monthly meetings with a nominal charge. Center facilities may be rented for private functions such as business conferences, receptions, parties and recitals. District residents and businesses pay reduced fees. Registrations for McLean Youth Athletics and McLean Little League activities are regularly held at the Center, and information on their activities is always available in the lobby. The Center also operates the award-winning Old Firehouse Teen Center, located at 1440 Chain Bridge Rd. in downtown McLean.

Vision Friends Award recipients Gordon Thomas and Bonnie Weston.

FRIENDS OF THE MCC NAME WESTON AND THOMAS 2016 “FRIENDS IN DEED” The Friends of the McLean Community Center (FMCC) organization has named Bonnie Weston and Gordon Thomas the recipients of its 2016 “Friend in Deed” award. Weston and Thomas are the 24th and 25th persons to receive this recognition “with gratitude for outstanding leadership and support of the McLean Community Center.”

Friends President Glenn Yarborough recognized the two at the Friends annual meeting on Monday, June 13. Their names will be added to the list of award recipients on the “Friend in Deed” plaque, which is displayed in the Center’s main lobby. A 45-year resident of McLean, Thomas has been a member of FMCC for seven years and has held the office of vice president for four years. He has been involved in all aspects of the organization, from volunteering at the Friends booth at special events to developing the organization’s brand by designing a new logo and FMCC’s new membership brochures and exhibit banners. He also worked with a contractor on the creation of the group’s website: www.friendsmcc.com. Weston has been a member of Friends of MCC for five years. She has served as treasurer for four of those five years. According to Yarborough, “As treasurer, Bonnie is involved with every member of Friends. She has welcomed the challenges that come with every new project. No one does more for Friends than Bonnie.” More information concerning Friends may be found at www.friendsmcc.com.

McLEAN TRAVELER Harper’s Ferry, West Virginia THURSDAY, OCT. 13

Harpers Ferry, West Virginia, where the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers meet, was built in the Appalachian Mountains and is multi-layered when it comes to our nation's history. The beauty of the area prompted Thomas Jefferson to say the view was "worth a voyage across the Atlantic." Harpers Ferry was the starting place of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, the site of John Brown's infamous raid (which precipitated the Civil War) and the bridge crossing the Potomac was the first structural steel bridge in the world. There will be an in-depth guided tour for our group by the Harpers Ferry Historical Association. Topics will include battles, significant historical locations, John Brown’s Raid and the Civil War. Lunch will be our first stop of the day at the Bavarian Inn, near Shepherdstown, West Virginia, which sits dramatically on a bluff above the Potomac River. The inn, owned by the Asam family, is known for its German food and regional specialties and has received the Four Diamond Award from AAA, for maintaining the highest standards in gourmet dining and superb hospitality.

Activity No. 7008.216 $135 per person/$130 MCC district residents. Fee includes deluxe motor coach transportation, guided tour of Harper's Ferry, lunch, morning snack and a driver’s tip. Arrive at MCC by 9:15 a.m. Bus departs promptly at 9:30 a.m. Bus returns to MCC at approximately 6:30 p.m. Make checks payable to Excursionaire. Tours require advance planning and itinerary may be subject to change without notice.

SAVE THE DATE! 2017 Philadelphia Flower Show, Philadelphia, PA MONDAY, MARCH 13, 2107

Harper's Ferry is a town that has been preserved in time but will come alive again as our tour guide spins fascinating tales of memorable events that took place here long ago. The fall foliage should be glorious in October.

AMERICAN SHAKESPEARE CENTER (ASC) ON TICKET TOUR’S SHAKESPEARE WEEKEND AT THE ALDEN www.americanshakespearecenter.com

Back by popular demand, ASC on Tour brings its fastpaced, super-accessible interpretations of the Bard’s best to The Alden. ASC recreates Shakespeare’s performance conditions by perfoming with the lights on and with audience members sitting on stage and even interacting with the performers. And just as in Shakespeare’s time, before the show the cast sings and plays contemporary music related to the play, but in ASC’s case it’s Lady Gaga and Prince. And if that’s not enough, you can even get a dog at the show. Seriously! Ticket packages are available for all three plays and “Brush Up Your Shakespeare” for $88/$60 MCC district residents.

SHAKESPEARE’S “TWO GENTLEMEN OF VERONA” Saturday, Jan. 21, 2 p.m. $35/$25 MCC district residents When long-distance love tangles the heartstrings of the play’s title characters, it takes two clever women, a pair of devoted servants and a dog to make things right. Jealous lovers, a cross-dressing heroine and a daring escape into the forest make “The Two Gentlemen of Verona” simultaneously a familiar and completely refreshing trip. SHAKESPEARE’S “ROMEO AND JULIET” Saturday, Jan. 21, 8 p.m. $35/$25 MCC district residents Young love. Mad passion. Super sexy. This most famous of love stories has it all, plus violent conflict, gorgeous poetry and feuding families.

14

THORNTON WILDER’S “OUR TOWN” Sunday, Jan. 22, 2 p.m. $35/$25 MCC district residents The Pulitzer Prizewinning drama has become one of the most beloved classics of modern theatre and has been called “probably the finest play ever written by an American” (Edward Albee). ASC on Tour’s signature style is well suited to this minimalist play and will make this production of “Our Town” unlike any you’ve experienced before.

"MORE IS MORE" FANTASY WORLD MOBILES

You can create an entire world, piece by piece, by focusing on the elements of art: color, line and shape. Mobiles will be made from beautiful beads, colorful yarns, glittering wire, pipe cleaners, fluffy cotton balls, lace, and felt—all suspended with "tiny pictures" of the creatures that live in your fantasy worlds. We will gather ideas from the artists’ works in the MPA galleries who create fantastic worlds in the exciting exhibition entitled Abundance. Bring in any additional materials that you wish to add to your fantasy world mobile.

Parents, grandparents, siblings and babysitters are welcome! Reservations strongly suggested, as space is limited. Instructor: Sharon Fishel. PUZZLE PAINTINGS

Your life can be like a puzzle: every day you do many things and go to many different places. Using maps, beautiful patterned papers, typefaces and photographs of your favorite everyday places, we will work with collage and watercolors to assemble the pieces together to create puzzle-inspired mixed media paintings. Inspired by the artists featured in the exhibition, Convergences, see how each artist connects the many parts of their lives in each artwork!

PASTELS: PAINTING WITH LINE/DRAWING WITH FORM

I’VE NEVER HELD A PENCIL: DRAWING FOR BEGINNERS

For the true beginner. If you’ve wanted to take a drawing class but found it intimidating, this is the place to start. Students will fall in love with drawing tools by exploring all the different media available, including different pencil weights, woodless pencils, graphite, charcoal, ink and more. Each student will find a variety of drawing materials with which he or she will develop a comfort level. Students’ skills and confidence will grow as they learn to work with line, texture, shading and simple forms. This series of beginning drawing classes is taught by a different instructor each semester, so each session is creatively different. Instructor: Arthur Kwon Lee.

Pastel has a special distinction because it offers a natural bridge between drawing and painting. In this class, we'll explore the double-sided painting/drawing nature of the pastel medium. We'll bravely confront its challenges for color mixing and exploit or explore many application techniques as we revel in pastel's characteristic material beauty. We'll focus on still life and expand into landscape and figure motifs, if desired, to further explore color and composition. Instructor: Aletha Kuschan.

For beginning and continuing students. Yupo is a plastic paper that provides a challenging and inventive surface on which to work with ink, watercolor and oil mediums. It is easier to work on abstractly, but can also be used to paint more realistically. You will enjoy experimenting with painting and drawing in whatever style you choose, and with setups, models and your imaginations. Instructor: Marise Riddell.

This class is designed for students with some experience in watercolor. In this class, the focus will be on working with the elements that make watercolor unique and challenging. You will learn to implement key concepts and explore the creative process of transparent watercolor painting. This class will also help to develop confidence, consistency and an individual style. By the end of this course you will have a better control of the medium and will have a deeper understanding of: drawing, composition, value relationships, color choices, watercolor techniques and problem solving. Instructor: Lubna Zahid.

10 lessons @ 3 hrs, $380/350 MCC district residents. Model fee extra. Fee is due to the instructor on the first day of class.

ABSTRACT DRAWING & PAINTING: A CREATIVE BREAK DOWN This class is for students at all levels who want to learn the abstract painting process. This class is acrylic-based. We will explore new methods to create abstract art with an art-historical focus and use charcoal, paint, ink and pencil. By selectively utilizing color, line and shapes, students will create compositions based on the breaking down of forms and artistic concepts. We will survey artists including Kandinsky, Diebenkorn and Mondrian for inspiration and interpretation. Analyses and demonstrations will augment this intuitive process. Instructor: Arthur Kwon Lee.

COLOR THEORY: ADVENTURES OF THE OPTIC NERVE

All levels, beginner to advanced, adults, 16 and up. We'll learn about color theory in a thoroughly non-theoretical fashion by means of experiment and serendipity. Through guided trial and error discovery experiments, we'll learn ways to make better use of local color, tonality inside color, color contrast, color juxtaposition and various effects of light. Exercises will include daring sessions of color mixing, color enhancement through still life set ups, color effect through manipulation of materials, and lastly, by manipulation of the artist himself or herself. LEARN TO PAINT FROM THE IMPRESSIONISTS

The Impressionists are known for painting outdoors, in natural light, capturing fleeting effects of light for a fresh, seemingly effortless effect. How did that translate into putting the paint on the canvas? There is a science behind how they painted and techniques to be learned. “I assure you no art was ever less spontaneous than mine,” said Edgar Degas. Through direct observation of Impressionist paintings at the National Gallery of Art and hands-on practice in the studio, students will learn the secrets and unlock the mysteries of how artists of the Impressionist movement like Monet, Renoir and Degas created their signature styles. The class will meet at the National Gallery of Art (NGA) on 10/10 at 10 a.m.; students will receive more information about the NGA trip by email. Instructor: Sharon Fishel. On 10/21: Meet at the Phillips Collection in Washington, D.C. We will also visit the Hillyer Art Space where we will discuss and draw from works. We will create mixed media painted works, which combine a personal vision with newly gained perspective from contemporary art. 3 lessons @ 2.5 hrs, $95/85 MCC district residents.
