McLean CoMMunity Center

Who We are, What We Do

The McLean Community Center (MCC) was built and is funded by residents of Greater McLean for their use through a real estate tax surcharge, the result of a 1970 bond referendum (Small District One A-Dranesville).

Center facilities include the 383-seat Alden Theatre, the McLean Project for the Arts galleries, the Susan B. DuVal Art Studio, meeting and conference rooms, a rehearsal studio and a classroom/commercial kitchen.

Local open clubs and organizations use the Center for their monthly meetings without charge. Center facilities may be rented for private functions such as business conferences, receptions, parties and recitals. District residents and businesses pay reduced fees. Registrations for McLean Youth Athletics and McLean Little League activities are regularly held at the Center, and information on their activities is always available in the lobby.

The Center also operates the award-winning Old Firehouse Teen Center, located at 1440 Chain Bridge Rd. in downtown McLean.

CenTer neWs Run for A Seat on MCC’s 2016-2017 Governing Board

is it your Turn to serve?

The McLean Community Center (MCC) is looking for district residents to serve on its governing Board. The Board sets policy, approves budgets and provides general oversight for Center programs and facilities.

Board members have a unique opportunity to improve the quality of life for district residents.

Openings: Three adult board seats and two youth board seats.

After a public hearing on September 14, the Center’s proposed budget for the next fiscal year, July 1, 2016–June 30, 2017, was approved by the MCC governing Board at its meeting on September 23. The tax rate to support the Center was maintained at 2.3 cents per $100 of assessed real estate values. The County Board of Supervisors will consider the Center’s budget for final approval in April. terms of Office: Three years for adults and one year for youths.

Eligibility: All candidates must be residents of the Center’s tax district (Small District 1A-Dranesville District). one youth candidate from the area served by McLean High School will be elected and one youth candidate from the area served by Langley High School will be elected. Youth candidates need not attend these schools, but must run for the seat representing the area where they live.

Petitions: Each candidate must obtain ten (10) signatures of endorsement from district residents and submit information about his or her candidacy for publication.

For a youth candidate, the ten (10) required signatures must also be from youths living in her or his high school area. Petition forms will be available at MCC starting on Monday, Jan. 25.

Deadline: Petitions must be filed at MCC no later than 5 p.m., on Friday, March 25.

Elections: Residents of the Center’s tax district may vote for Board members on McLean Day, Saturday, May 21, from 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Lewinsville Park, or by absentee ballot from Monday, April 11, through Wednesday, May 18.

Absentee voting will take place at MCC and The old Firehouse Teen Center. Adults vote for adult candidates only, and youths vote for youth candidates only.

The McLean Community Center governing Board is holding a Public Hearing on MCC Programs at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 23, at the Center. The governing Board’s regularly scheduled monthly meeting will follow the public hearing. All meetings of the Board are open to the public.

Residents of Small District 1A-Dranesville, the Center’s tax district, are encouraged to attend the hearing to voice their opinions on current offerings at the Center and to make suggestions for future programs. The hearing is the first step in planning for the FY 2018 budget cycle, which begins July 1, 2017. The Center is home to the Robert Ames Alden Theatre and includes the old Firehouse Teen Center, which is located at 1440 Chain Bridge Road.

Residents who would like to have their names placed on the speakers’ list for the hearing may call the Center at 703-790-0123, TTY: 711. Residents also may make comments at the hearing without prior notice and may submit written comments in person or by mail, fax (703-556-0547), or e-mail (mail@mcleancenter.org).

25th Anniversary Celebration of the Teen Center

On Tuesday, Oct. 13, dozens of residents joined the McLean Historical Society and the McLean Community Center (MCC) in commemorating the 25th Anniversary of the Old Firehouse Teen Center.

In his remarks, Dranesville District Supervisor John Foust noted his pleasure that a historic building was being used to serve both area teens and others, including the Lewinsville Senior Center and the SPARC program.

MCC Board Chair Paul Kohlenberger, who is president of the McLean Historical Society, made a presentation about early efforts by the community to serve the teen population, including a proposed temporary MCC teen center that would have been located behind Redeemer Lutheran Church. He then introduced Janie Strauss, who, as chair of the McLean Citizens Association’s Education Committee, had been a strong early advocate of the project.

Joining Strauss in remembering the Teen Center’s founding were former Governing Board members Pamela Danner and Gail Nields, as well as former MCC Executive Director Page Shelp, and former Dranesville Supervisor Lilla Richards. George Sachs, MCC Executive Director, reviewed current operations of the Teen Center and efforts to ensure its continued strength.

The McLean Community Center thanks the many individuals and organizations that helped make the Old Firehouse Teen Center a reality, especially Pierce Architecture, the Friends of the McLean Community Center and the McLean Community Foundation.

The mission of the McLean Community Center is to provide a sense of community by undertaking programs; assisting community organizations; and furnishing facilities for civic, cultural, educational, recreational and social activities apportioned fairly to all residents of Small District 1, Dranesville.

2016 philadelphia flower show

Monday, Mar. 7, 2016 The year 2016 marks the 100th Anniversary of the National Park Service, and what better way to celebrate than a trip to the renowned Philadelphia Flower Show!

The landscapes of the united States truly are majestic and in particular most of the national parks. From Yosemite in California to Acadia in Maine, our national parks have a rich history along with amazing natural beauty. Horticultural artists from the East Coast will be inspired by the mountains, wind-swept coasts, grassy plains and the incredible wildflowers of the parks that are our national treasures. Siege Museum, Petersburg, Va.

The show features music and lyrics by Cindi Lauper. In this age of phenomenal musicals, one cannot do much better than that! The musical is taken from a 2005 film by the same name and is the true story of a man named Charlie Price who inherits a shoe factory from his father.

To save the business, Charlie forms an unlikely partnership with a cabaret performer who is also a drag queen and together they save the business with a line of highheeled boots. Besides being outrageously funny, the music took off and the show album premiered at number one on the Billboard Cast Albums Chart. McLean proJeCT for The arTs Winter/spring exhibitions schedule McLean Project for the Arts (MPA) is a nonprofit organization that presents the visual arts program for the community at the McLean Community Center (MCC), thanks to a public/private partnership with MCC and Fairfax County.

MPA presents exhibitions of contemporary art in three galleries and provides education in the visual arts through a program of classes for children and adults, as well as lectures, tours and ArtReach, an outreach program that brings school children and other groups to the gallery for educational programs.

• Patrons who submit refund requests 14 days or more before the start date of a class or activity, will be granted a refund, minus a $25 processing fee. refunds requested less than 14 days before the start date of the class or activity will not be granted.

Summer Camp refund Policy • The Center will issue a full refund when a camp program is canceled by the Center.

• In Person/Drop Off You may register in person at the Center from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. At other times, drop a completed registration form and payment (in the form of a check or money order, or by completing the credit card information on the form) into the registration box located in the lobby adjacent to the reception desk.
