McLean CoMMunity Center

Who We are, What We Do

The McLean Community Center (MCC) was built and is funded by residents of Greater McLean for their use through a real estate tax surcharge, the result of a 1970 bond referendum (Small District One A-Dranesville). Center facilities include the 383-seat Alden Theatre, the McLean Project for the Arts galleries, the Susan B. DuVal Art Studio, meeting and conference rooms, a rehearsal studio and a classroom/commercial kitchen. Local open clubs and organizations use the Center for their monthly meetings without charge. Center facilities may be rented for private functions such as business conferences, receptions, parties and recitals. District residents and businesses pay reduced fees. Registrations for McLean Youth Athletics and McLean Little League activities are regularly held at the Center, and information on their activities is always available in the lobby. The Center also operates the award-winning Old Firehouse Teen Center, located at 1440 Chain Bridge Rd. in downtown McLean.

Our Core Purpose Award recipient Mary Anne Hampton and Friends President Glenn Yarborough.

Friends of the McLean Community Center Name Mary Anne Hampton 2015 “Friend in Deed”

The mission of the McLean Community Center is to provide a sense of community by undertaking programs; assisting community organizations; and furnishing facilities for civic, cultural, educational, recreational and social activities apportioned fairly to all residents of Small District 1, Dranesville.

The Friends of the McLean Community Center (FMCC) organization has named Mary Anne Hampton the recipient of its 2015 “Friend in Deed” award. Hampton is the 23rd person to receive this recognition “with gratitude for outstanding leadership and support of the McLean Community Center.” Hampton was honored at the Friends annual meeting on Monday, June 8, and her name will be added to the “Friend in Deed” plaque located in the Center’s main lobby which lists all award recipients.

Vision

One of two original staff members hired when the McLean Community Center opened in 1975, Hampton served in various positions during her 33-year tenure. Since retirement she has volunteered for numerous Center activities and became a member of the Friends Board in 2013. Since that time, she has worked to promote Friends by, among other things, helping to develop the Friends website and assisting with the update of their membership brochure. Hampton also headed the committee which organized the Friends 50th Anniversary Reception in 2014 and the “Meet the Candidates” Reception for the 2015 MCC Governing Board elections.

Accountability: We are accountable to create services of value to our tax district residents.

According to Friends President Glenn Yarborough, “Mary Anne is the ‘go to’ Board member of the Friends of the McLean Community Center. When there is a project or a problem, Mary Anne gets it solved and done. Her thoughtful advice and reliability means so much to those on the Friends Board. No one is better, and she is most deserving of this award.” More information concerning Friends may be found at www.friendsmcc.com.

The McLean Community Center is a “hub” for McLean’s Community!

9/11 Museum & Memorial new york City, new york

Saturday, Oct. 17 September 11, 2001, who can ever forget that indelible date? Finally, after much investigation, preparation, and money, a museum and a memorial have been built in new York City to honor the victims and all those who risked their lives to save others. The national September 11 Memorial Museum is the country’s premiere institution concerned with exploring the reasons, results and significance of the events of 9/11 through artifacts, videos, photographs, memorabilia and personal testimonies. A section of this museum sits seven stories below ground in the very space where the Twin Towers once stood as an actual archeological site. While most museums are built to house artifacts, this museum has been built within an artifact. An audio guide will be provided to ease everyone through the self-guided tour. The memorial itself was designed by architect Michael Arad and landscape architect Peter Walker. Their design includes two, one-acre pools complete with waterfalls and the names of the 2,983 victims inscribed on 76 bronze plates attached to the walls of the memorial pools.

8

A gourmet boxed lunch will be served en route to new York City and a dinner stop will be made on the way back to Virginia, which will be on your own. The sandwich choices for the boxed lunch are: Kobe Roast Beef and Swiss, Italian Hero, Tomato and Mozzarella and Turkey and Cheddar. Please write your choice on the check. This is a wonderful opportunity to see this incredible museum and memorial. Sign up early and bring a friend as this tour is sure to fill up quickly. Activity No. 7005.215 $195 per person/$190 MCC district residents, which includes deluxe motor coach transportation, admission to the national September 11 Memorial Museum, audio guide, gourmet boxed lunch, morning snack and a driver’s tip. Please arrive at MCC by 6:45 a.m. Bus will depart promptly at 7 a.m. Bus returns at approximately 10:30 p.m. Please make checks payable to Excursionaire.

juggling Playing By Air www.playingbyair.com Sunday, Nov. 1, 2 p.m. $20/$15 MCC district residents

“Julius Caesar” Friday, Jan. 22, 8 p.m., Live music starts at 7:30 p.m. $35/$20 MCC district residents In this profoundly moving, breathtaking and deeply human play, Shakespeare shows us a world on fire; a world turned upside down; a world where some of history’s most famous men commit horrific crimes in the name of patriotism and honor. “Julius Caesar” is a dazzling thrill ride of betrayal, violence and perhaps most surprisingly, love.

Playing By Air captivates audiences with a joyful fusion of music, juggling and circus in which traditional theatricality meets absurd comedy. The award-winning performers of Playing By Air share their sense of playfulness and breathtaking feats in a production enjoyed equally by adults, families and children. Audiences are drawn into the performance with a contagious attitude of expressive play and creativity.

“the Life of King Henry V” Saturday, Jan. 23, 8 p.m., Live music starts at 7:30 p.m. $35/$20 MCC district residents The story of England’s hero-king and the greatest upset in European military history is Shakespeare’s finale to his great history plays. More than that, Henry V — at once touching, heroic, savage and comic — explores the nature of greatness and its connection to theatre; and, perhaps more than any other of Shakespeare’s works, it makes the audience part of the story.

sound Drawings: Colored rhythms

Join us for this unique Family Art Workshop that combines visual art and music. Do you play an instrument or love listening to music? Can you draw to the sounds of instruments? Can you make cool rhythms and sounds while you are drawing? We will use crayons, watercolor paints, markers and chalk to create fantastic artwork containing colorful, rhythmic patterns. We will be inspired by the amazing art and sound installations of Robin Rose and the colorful expressive watercolors of Barbara Januszkiewicz on exhibit at MPA. Instructor: Sharon Fishel.

“new nature” Collage Workshop sTeaM focus: art & science

How closely do you observe the world around you? We will learn to use shape, color and written words to describe what we see using our powers of scientific observation as we look at and draw from selected plant forms. We also will be inspired by the work of five exhibiting artists, all of whom use line, color and shape to describe the world around us. Please bring in pictures of your favorite plants and materials from nature, which you can use in your collage. Instructor: Sharon Fishel. 4-8 years 1 lesson @ 1.5 hrs, $10 per family. ACtIVIty NO.

She currently serves on the Fairfax County History Commission, is a board member of the Friends of McLean Community Center and is the VicePresident of the McLean Historical Society. In addition, Herrick chairs McLean & Great Falls Celebrate Virginia, an organization that is helping to sponsor educational programs related to McLean’s role in the War of 1812. This helps the instructor plan for the class, assures us that there is enough interest to hold the class (and possibly offer it again) and allows us to assign an appropriate room.
