Over the past several years, the McLean Bands have earned a reputation for excellence, consistently achieving high ratings at contests and has advanced to the Area level in the TMEA Honor Band process. The program includes three concert ensembles and a jazz band, providing students with a range of opportunities to develop their musical skills and perform at a high level.

Beginning band classes are offered at the McLean 6th Grade campus, where students are taught in homogenous instrument groups to build a strong foundation in music. new era fanfare

Randall D Standridge

New Era Fanfare is a concert opener written for wind ensemble It uses motivic development, pop rhythms, and bombastic percussion to make a definite statement at a concert or event This piece was written for the 2012 Arkansas School Band and Orchestra Association Region VI Honor Band In addition to the standard compliment of instruments, the work utilizes the next family to enter the concert band, electronics Electronic instruments will become part of the concert band, and we as composers and educators should embrace it These instruments do not replace our band instruments: they add new color A New Era has begun!

simple Gifts: Four Shaker Songs

The Shakers were a religious sect who splintered from a Quaker community in the mid-1700s in Manchester, England Known then derisively as "Shaking Quakers" because of the passionate shaking that would occur during their religious services, they were viewed as radicals, and their members were sometimes harassed and even imprisoned by the English My work is built from four Shaker melodies -- a sensuous nature song, a lively dance tune, a tender lullaby, and most famously, Simple Gifts, the hymn that celebrates the Shaker's love of simplicity and humility In setting these songs, I sought subtle ways to preserve their simple, straightforward beauty Melodic freshness and interest were achieved primarily through variations of harmony, of texture, and especially of orchestration

The first movement is a setting of In Yonder Valley, generally regarded to be the oldest surviving Shaker song with text This simple hymn in praise of nature is attributed to Father James Whittaker (1751-1787), a member of the small group of Shakers who emigrated to America in 1774 My setting enhances the image of spring by turning the first three notes of the tune into a birdcall motive

The finale is a setting of the Shakers' most famous song, Simple Gifts, sometimes attributed to Elder Joseph Bracket (1797-1882) of the Alfred, Maine, community, and also said (in Lebanon, New York, manuscript) as having been received from a Negro spirit at Canterbury, New Hampshire, making Simple Gifts possibly a visionary gift song It has been used in hundreds of settings, most notably by Aaron Copland in the brilliant set of variations which conclude his Appalachian Spring Without ever quoting him, my setting begins at Copland's doorstep, and quickly departs Throughout its little journey, the tune is never abandoned, rarely altered, always exalted - Program Note by composer

Chan Chan

William Owens

Located near the Pacific coast city of Trujillo, Chan Chan was the capital of the Chimú civilization, which lasted from A D 850 to around 1470 The adobe metropolis was the seat of power for an empire that stretched 600 miles from just south of Ecuador down to central Peru By the 15th century, as many as 60,000 people lived in Chan Chan

The city was established in one of the world's bleakest coastal deserts, where the average annual rainfall was less than a tenth of an inch Still, Chan Chan's fields and gardens flourished, thanks to a sophisticated network of irrigation canals and wells

Chan Chan's days of glory came to an end around 1470, when the Inca conquered the city, broke up the Chimú Empire and brought many of Chan Chan's craftsmen to their own capital, Cuzco, 600 miles to the southeast By the time Spanish conquistador Francisco Pizarro arrived around 1532, the city had been largely abandoned, though reports from the expedition described walls and other architectural features adorned with precious metals

Beauty and raw power collide in this contemporary work that pays homage to Chan Chan, an ancient city in the desert of northern Peru Engaging melodies and primal harmonies reveal both spectacle and mystery as the work unfolds

MEN OF OHIO

Henry Filmore, arr. Robert Foster

Fillmore dedicated this march "To the President, Warren G Harding, and his staunch Loyalists" in 1921, the year Harding became the 29th president of the United States Harding had played alto horn in his hometown band of Caledonia and later, in Marion, Ohio, where his family moved He also enjoyed boxing, motoring, fishing, baseball, card playing and golfing His high school popularity continued into adulthood, and he was elected to the state senate in 1898 and to the U S Congress as a senator in 1914 In 1920 the "small-town hero" took advantage of the American mood against the restrictions of the war years and ran a successful campaign for the nation's highest office His popularity in that office was tarnished after two of his political appointees were convicted of graft and sent to prison In an effort to regain the confidence of the populace in himself and his Republican Party members, Harding undertook a rigorous speaking schedule which left him completely exhausted A stroke followed, and he died in August 1923

SQUIRREL CHASE CAROL BRITTIN CHAMBERS

Squirrel Chase by Carol Brittin Chambers is a fast-paced galop inspired by the energetic and mischievous nature of squirrels A galop, a lively dance in duple meter, mimics the quick, darting movements of these creatures The piece features playful melodies, lively percussion, and a sense of humor, capturing the excitement of a squirrel’s unpredictable chase The quirky rhythms and dynamic energy make it an engaging and entertaining work for both performers and audiences

CON SABOR ESPANOL

Originally composed as a conducting sight-reading exercise for auditions to select his successor as Director of the U S Coast Guard Band, Con Sabor Español is a lively and rhythmically intricate work Full of mixed meters and engaging challenges, the piece blends technical precision with vibrant Spanish-inspired energy Despite its origins as a test piece, it has become a favorite for ensembles, offering both performers and audiences a dynamic and spirited musical experience

Country club stomp

JaRod Hall

Country Club Stomp is a lively, high-energy piece inspired by the New Orleans “second line” groove, a tradition rooted in brass band parades The infectious rhythms, driven by the drummers, create a forward-moving pulse full of joy and spirit This musical style traces its origins to West African circle dances, which evolved into parade processions in Black American celebrations

The title comes from Country Club Drive in Irving, Texas, home to Sam Houston Middle School, where Hall served as band director in 2020 Dedicated to his students and their resilience, Country Club Stomp bursts with personality, pride, and celebration
