Among the changes are the promotion of quarterbacks coach Nick Miller to offensive coordinator. Miller, who will still coach the quarterbacks, replaces Eric Bergman, who stepped down at the end of the 2021-22 school year. Along with a new offensive coordinator,
Babcock added three new assistants on the offensive side of the ball as Nick Holeton replaces Bergman as the offensive line coach, while Peter Gonzalez, Jr., will serve as the running backs coach and DeAndre Hollier will coach the tight ends and assist on special teams. Additionally, receivers coach Thomas Jenkins has added the title of recruiting coordinator and will also serve as the program’s equipment manager.
FORMER BEARCAT KELLY JOINS STAFF AS LINEBACK
ERS COACH: The defensive side of the ball also added a new assistant coach after the end fo the 2021 season as longtime Quincy University assistant coach Sean Kelly was named as the Bearcats’ linebackers coach. Kelly, who played at McKendree as a linebacker from 2007-10, was Quincy’s associate head coach and defensive coordinator the past five seasons.

Head Coach Mike Babcock (10th Season -- UCLA, ‘02)
Mike Babcock is in his 10th season as the head coach of the McKendree University football program in 2021. Babcock was named as the 17th football coach in the history of the Bearcats’ program back in December 2013.

During Babcock’s tenure at McKendree, the Bearcats have perennially been in the hunt for a Great Lakes Valley Conference title, while helping the pro gram excel on both sides of the football.
Along wth his coaching duties, Babcock recently completed a six-year term on the NCAA Division II Football Committee, including serving as the chair person of the committee during the 2021 season.

In the 2021 season, the Bearcats posted a 4-7 overall record and a 3-4 mark in the GLVC to finish tied for fifth in the league standings. On offfense, McKendree averaged nearly 30 points per game and scored 30 or more points in five of their 11 games. The team set a new school record for kickoff return yards (1,216) and their 5,857 all-purpose yards were third most in a single season. Additionally, 16 Bearcat players earned All-GLVC honors, including three first-team selections.
The 2020 season was shortened to just two games and played in the Spring of 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. During that season, the Bearcats went 1-1 as they picked up a 30-8 home win over Quincy and fell 51-23 at Indianapolis. The 2020 Bearcats averaged 314 yards per game and scored 26.5 points per game on offense, while they allowed 356 yards per game on defense and surrended nearly 30 points per game in its two contests.
During the 2019 season, the Bearcats went 5-6 overall and posted a 3-4 record in GLVC play and recorded a fifth place finish in the league standings. On the offensive side of the ball, the Bearcats averaged 31.9 points per game and scored over 30 points in five games, including a season high 62 points in a 62-34 home win on Senior Day over Quincy. In fact. McKendree ended the season scoring over 50 points in its final two game as it followed up the 62 points against Quincy by scoring 50 points in a 5150 setback at Missouri S&T. Additionally, McKendree’s offensive line allowed just two sacks in 11 games, which was 15th among all Division II football playing schools.
McKendree’s offense averaged nearly 393 yards per game as freshman quarterback Turner Pullen was the first Bearcat to be named the GLVC Freshman of the Year. In 2019, Pullen completed 169-of-280 pass attempts for 2,407 yards and tossed 24 touchdown passes, which ranked second on the Bearcats’ single-season chart. Pullen had 12 touchdown passes of at least 40 yards this season, including nine that went for 50 yards or more. All of Pullen’s passing statistics were records for a first-year McKendree quarterback. In addition to his lofty passing numbers, Pullen was third on the Bearcats’ squad with 301 rushing yards, but he led the team with eight rushing touchdowns in 2019. The eight TDs were the most for a McKendree quarterback since Isaac Fisher had nine during his GLVC Offensive Player of the Year campaign in 2015.
While Pullen was named the GLVC Freshman of the Year, senior receiver Matt Cole was named the GLVC Special Teams Player of the Year as he put together per haps the most prolific season by a McKendree skill position player in program history. He led the GLVC in kick returns at 27.2 yards per effort, including a 100-yard kick return for a touchdown against Lindenwood, marking his third career kick return for a score. In the punt return game, Cole had just eight attempts, but averaged 26 yards per return, including a 74-yard return for a touchdown at William Jewell. He also had a 72-yarder on his final career punt return at Missouri S&T that set up a Bearcats’ touchdown. Cole also set a new season record for McKendree with 1,832 all-purpose yards. With four combined kick returns for touchdowns, Cole ranked second in program history in the category. In his four seasons at McKendree, Cole registered 1,400 kick return yards, which was also good for second on the Bearcats’ all-time list.
Babcock came to McKendree after spending five years as an assis tant coach at Colorado State University-Pueblo, one of the top NCAA Divi sion II programs in the country. In his last four years at CSU-Pueblo, Bab cock served as the ThunderWolves’ quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator. Under his leadership, CSU-Pueblo registered back-to-back undefeated regular seasons and claimed Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) cham pionships. The ThunderWolves were the top-ranked team in the final American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) regular-season poll in both 2011 and 2012.
With Babcock at the offensive controls, CSU-Pueblo set 13 team and 15 in dividual offensive records as the ThunderWolves advanced to the national quar terfinals of the NCAA Division II playoffs in 2012. CSU-Pueblo set new team season standards in every major passing category, including attempts, comple tions, yards, touchdowns and completion percentage. The ThunderWolves also established new records for total offensive yards, plays and points scored.
During the 2012 season, CSU-Pueblo averaged 35.8 points and 442.6 yards of total offense per game this season. The ThunderWolves were ranked first in the RMAC and 11th in NCAA Division II in passing efficiency. In addition, CSU-Pueblo ranked among the top 30 in the nation in scoring offense.
Babcock arrived at CSUPueblo after spending the 2007 season as the tight ends coach and director of football operations at the University of San Diego, where he helped the Toreros to a Pioneer Conference champi onship. Prior to that, Babcock served as the quality control in tern for offense for two seasons at the University of Colorado. He served as an assistant in coach ing the Buffaloes’ offensive line, tight end and special teams.
Babcock began his coach ing career at his alma mater, the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA). He was an undergraduate and gradu ate assistant with the Bruins from 2000-04. After spending the 2000-02 season coaching the UCLA linebackers, Babcock shifted to defensive line coach in 2003. He wrapped up his stay at UCLA by guiding the Bruins’ offensive line in 2004.
During his stay at UCLA, Babcock helped coach the Bruins to four bowl appear ances, and also helped guide the top-ranked defensive unit in the Pac-10 in 2001.
As an undergraduate at UCLA, Babcock was a linebacker and played on the Bruins’ 1997 and 1998 Pac-10 championship squads, and played in both the Cotton Bowl (1998) and Rose Bowl (1999). UCLA put together a 20-game win streak during Babcock’s playing days. Babcock earned both of his degrees from UCLA – an undergraduate degree in 2002 along with his master’s degree in 2005. Babcock and his wife Kimberly have two children: Tyler and Emily.
