Meeting with a librarian for research coaching offers numerous benefits for students (and faculty). Librarians work with students to know how to search databases efficiently, navigate the catalog, and evaluate sources. Additionally, the librarians help students find and access both physical and digital resources of which they might not be aware.
The librarians offer personalized help for specific assignments or research projects, ensuring students get the most relevant and reliable information. These appointments encourage students to critically analyze sources, fostering deeper understanding and critical
thinking skills. A research coach can also provide assistance with the use of various research tools, including PowerNotes. Meeting with a librarian can significantly enhance the quality of research, providing invaluable support and expertise in navigating the vast landscape of information and resources.
Encourage your students to enhance their research skills and academic success by scheduling research coaching appointments with our librarians, and consider offering extra credit for their proactive engagement.

DESIGNING RESEARCH ASSIGNMENTS
Librarians can partner with faculty members in several ways to design effective research assignments for students:
Assignment Design: Collaborate to create assignments incorporating specific research skills and methodologies, ensuring course objectives are aligned
Resource Integration: Identify and integrate relevant McKee Library resources, such as databases, journals, and books, directly into the assignments
Customized Research Guides: Develop tailored research guides that provide resources specific to the assignment.
Resource Lists: Curate lists of recommended resources that support the assignment, including academic and non-academic sources.
Technology Integration: Suggest and help incorporate relevant technology and tools like PowerNotes into the research process.
Ongoing Support: The embedded librarian service offers continuous support throughout the duration of the assignment to address any emerging student needs or questions. Learn more by contacting Jessica Spears at jspears@southern.edu.
We look forward to collaborating with you throughout the academic year.
