The event has a non-commercial focus, the Book Nook has donated books and the Fabric of Play uses hand made equipment using clean second hand materials.

Turn your kitchen scraps into compost! Learn about how we make compost for our community garden in our effective closed compost system. You may bring food scraps, lawn clippings, newspapers or corrugated cardboard to add to the compost. Please wear closed shoes and clothes you don’t mind getting a bit dirty. Bring garden gloves if you have them and a bucket to take home some compost.

You will learn how to prepare a simple delicious dessert made of sweet coconutpumpkin sticky rice topped with a scrumptious coconut caramel, all resting on banana leaves which infuse it with their subtle but typical aroma.

Do your bit for bat detection in inner west Tāmaki by wielding one of our handheld bat monitors as we follow Meola Creek (Waitītiko) from the point it emerges from under the Northwestern Motorway to just before Te Mahurehure Marae. We’ll be spotlighting in the stream along the way. We’ll almost certainly see tuna (eels) but who knows what else we’ll find?

All ages welcome (babies and toddlers might need to be carried).

Judy Keats (Regenerative Permaculture Practitioner will demonstrate techniques for pruning a range of mature fruiting trees, including apples, plums and pears. Learn about the habits of these trees and the increased benefits of training the new growth for production. Consider planting a guild (a collection of plants - herbs, flowers, cover crops) under your fruit trees to add beauty and resilience to your ecosystem.

NB at completion of this workshop (approx 12noon) there will be a fun ‘seed bomb making’ activity for the kids using wildflower seeds.
