Sports Information 2023

INTRODUCTION

Sport and cultural activities are seen as a major part of a student's life at John McGlashan College. Sport is encouraged for students in Years 7-13, as are the inter-house Haka, Athletics, Swimming and Cross-Country events. Staff try to cater for a wide variety of interests and abilities, and encourage both elite performance and enthusiastic involvement. John McGlashan College has a proud history and strength in both sport and the performing arts. They are seen as an important part of the College, and contribute much to the culture and experience that is John McGlashan College.

There is a wide range of sporting opportunities for students to take part in.

STUDENT SPORTING OBLIGATIONS

All students from Year 9 until Year 13 are encouraged to take part in at least one summer and one winter sport or activity. If they choose an activity that runs for the whole year, they should also take part in at least one other activity in either summer or winter.

SPORTING COSTS/ FEES

Once your son is committed to playing a sport the cost of the trip, exchange, sporting fees will be charged to your sons account.

SPORTS UNIFORMS

The sports and PE uniforms are available at Otago Sports Depot (177 George Street).

Students are reminded that when travelling to and from sporting events during school time, or home following sporting practices and matches, they are required to wear either the full College sports uniform or full school uniform. See the guide at the end of this document

TRANSPORT

Teams will often be transported to games using College vans, or hired taxis and buses. The cost of hiring these vehicles will be disbursed to the accounts of the students concerned.

Students with their own vehicles are not to take passengers in their cars without the knowledge of the coach or manager of the team and without the written permission of the parents/guardians of both the driver and the passengers concerned.

SPONSORSHIP

We appreciate the generosity of many of our schooling community for helping with funding. Please note that all sponsorship must be approved by the school, and there is an application form that needs to be completed. Any uniform items need to be approved by the Director of Sport, and the Marketing manager to ensure that all conditions are meet. If an item is to be sublimated then you will need to allow approximately 2 months for the item. Please contact either the teacher in charge of the code, or the Director of Sport if you have any questions regarding this.

COSTS

The College sports budget aims to cover some of the costs of coaching and College based facilities. To help provide extra equipment, court hire, functions or affiliation fees, all sports and activities have a subscription attached to them. Where there are direct costs involved for things such as the hire of facilities, transport and accommodation, these will be charged to students accounts.

INFORMATION TO STUDENTS/PARENTS

The John McGlashan Sports App is the place to look for sports draws and notices. This is a great way for connecting with the boys and community on a regular basis through mobile devices. Users are able to subscribe to specific alert groups to only receive alerts that are relevant to them. Alerts are setup as push notifications so even a locked phone will display the alert.

You can use the following site https://mcglashansports.apps.school.nz/portal/ , or Download SchoolAppsNZ from the App Store or Google play, load John McGlashan College and subscribe to the sports your son is interested in.

All boys need to check the notices daily, and ensure that they are keeping up to date with their school emails for information regarding sign ups, trials, practice and game times. We expect boys to be responsible and selfmanaging.

STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT:

At John McGlashan College we are keen to the hear about the successes of our students. Please contact the Director of Sport Troy Jennings or Sports Co-Ordinator Tony Gomez about your sons sporting successes.

Can You Help?

Throughout the year we will require coaches, managers, and helpers in the many sporting codes that we participate in. Positions could be for either mid-week or weekend teams.

Volunteers involved with overnight excursions will have to complete an online criminal record check. This information is held confidentially with the Principal.
