SSM U g ets fla k for lack o f G A ad s Dismissal of motion a possibility Byron Tau This fall's General Assembly on Oct. 9 will give students the opportunity to express their concerns over key issues af fecting the Students' Society. However, many concerns have been raised as to the legitimacy of the process and the consti tutionality o f the procedures leading up to the event. According to former SSMU president and co-author of several motions Aaron Donny-Clark, SSMU has failed to properly advertise the opportunity to contribute motions to this semester's agenda. "By failing to adequately and correctly advertise the process for the submission of motions, the SSMU has undermined the basic purpose o f the GA: to give the m em bership a forum for its ideas as expressed in motions," Donny-Clark said. "The posters up around cam pus which advertise the

GA and the process o f submitted motions contain several flaws." Donny-Clark maintained that these GA posters, as well as the media ads taken out by SSMU in the Tribune and Le Délit contain misleading and omitted informa tion, implying that Council can directly put items on the agenda, and neglected to fully explain the submission procedure. SSMU President Jake Itzkowitz, how ever, maintains, "There's no requirement for any specific new spaper publicity for the call for submissions. We didn't actually violate the Constitution." Items on the agenda include a pro posed Students' Society endorsem ent of the American Eagle boycott, a mandate that SSMU lobby to end the current Mi nerva opt-out system and a dem and that Shatner space be prioritized for studentS ee GROUPS on p ag e 6

Last Wednesday, an underpass on the Côte-de-Liesse highway near the Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport was suddenly closed for em ergency repairs, causing a half-hour traffic delay and count less missed flights. Many central arteries, including St-Laurent, M aisonneuve and the Ville-Marie tunnel are also undergoing renovations, causing delays and frustration am ongst motorists as they face more con gestion than usual. The Q uebec Ministry ofTransport and the City o f Montreal have received much criticism over the past year after several incidents o f crum bling concrete in city structures— most notably, the collapse of

Saeed Mirza, McGill professor of civil engineering, said that it is unfortunate that a tragedy like the de la Concorde incident had to be the wakeup call for the city to do something about the deterioration of its infrastructure. "How many more deaths will it take? What kind o f society are w e living in? The plus side was that this event led the John son Commission to start asking questions about w hat w ent wrong," he said. "I have been warning [the city] for 15 years and they don't w ant to listen. I think that if the
