The 7.6-magnitude earthquake that struck South Asia last Saturday morning has caused widespread devastation to Pakistani-adm inis tered Kashmir and the surrounding area, and the disaster has not gone unnoticed by the McGill community. With an estimated death toll of 54,000 people, this earthquake has destroyed cities and left thousands homeless or living in makeshift tent cities. The United Nations has launched an emergency appeal for US$272-million and has said that
more than one million people are in "acute need" of assistance in the quake zone. The McGill community is also doing its part, along with the Pakistani government and relief NGOs, to fuel the relief effort. The driving force at McGill thus far has been the Pakistani Students' Association. The PSA collected donations at the Roddick and Milton Gates on Tuesday and Wednesday last week, but due to the rain was forced to move its fundraising indoors to the Shatner, Bronfman, and Leacock buildings.
