If you thought Paradise Hotel was a treasure trove of shifting alliances, contrived storylines, and moody, self-destructive characters, then I present you with the world’s first, best and longest-running reality T V show, set right in the land of milk and honey.

And now they are creating a spinoff.

I refer, of course, to Iraq. I long for the days when “Iraq” was just a crossword clue, a four letter Middle Eastern country, and I’d leave the last box blank in case it turned out to be Iran. But, as Bob Dylan said, “peo­ ple are crazy and times are strange, m y friend.”

Events have the appearance of coasting toward normalcy. The White House seems to have realized that it cannot rebuild Iraq alone. Last Thursday, the United Nations Security Council unanimously approved a resolution put forth by the Americans to establish a multinational occupying force, to request contributions for that force and the reconstruction efforts, to expand the U N ’s role, and to establish a timeline for a new Iraqi constitution and elected gov­ ernment.

Its passage is promising, given that Syria is on the Security Council and that the plan maintains US dominance over the reconstruction process, which you’d think would’ve worked against it. Heck, Bush had threatened to add Syria to his Axis of Evil and the resolution still got through— but maybe that was the whole point. Perhaps I should try that with m y Psych professor; I could name him to the Multi-Axial Diagnostic Assessment of Evil. O r perhaps not.

But while the plan looks pret­ ty good, there’s a chasm between talk and action: this resolution doesn’t require the U N or its mem­ ber nations to contribute anything.

It’s your project, they say to the US, you pay for it.

I ’m not surprised. This kind of posturing is to be expected from courting peacocks and elected politicians alike. Problem is, pos­ turing does nothing but distract us while peace fades into the mist.

And peace, or the lack thereof, is everyone’s concern. Look at Israel: we could just blame the British for their asinine nation­ building project 50-odd years ago— after all, blaming the Brits is just so hot right now. But instead we recognize peace as something we all need to work toward.

I don’t suggest handing Bush a conical dunce cap and leaving him

in a corner; it’s clear that if the administration didn’t lie outright about their justification for attack, they certainly engaged in selective truth-telling. And Bush’s PR machine has been spitting out flimsy excuses like a teenager caught with his sister’s lingerie catalogue.

Whether he’s waffling over who compromised nation­ al security by leaking the identity of a CLA agent, or bypassing “big media” (read: those that challenge him) to sell his policies to small-town America, the President is definitely struggling to find the words to defend himself.

This sudden loss of legitimacy is probably why the resolution passed with relative ease; the Security Council knows that it stands a good chance of playing a bigger role than anticipated.

Th e important thing now is for other countries to take advantage of the momentum and force their resources and expertise upon reconstruction efforts.

It’s not exacdy fair. In a just world, the White House would carry the sole responsibility for rectifying the situation. But lives are at stake. There’s plenty of time to flog Bush and Co. later, once the sand has setded, as it were, and there will be no more damning evidence than that gleaned from having fixed things ourselves.

Th e alternative is to leave Iraqi governance to the White House, where spin substitutes for political depth. This means continuing to play the blame game.

Heck, we’ve played it for years in Israel and look what a holiday destination that’s turned out to be. We can let politicians prance around, preening themselves and squawking “your fault, you fix it.” Meanwhile, noth­ ing gets done, and I ’m starting to wonder what the point is.

To paraphrase Bob, it’s hard to win when you’ve been dealt a losing hand. So yeah, maybe things are changing, but I ’m finding it hard to care. ■

I find that it’s absolutely ridiculous that, after having ranted and raved about the need for democra­ cy in demanding a S S M U presidential by-election, councillors are now trying to prevent a S S M U execu­ tive from running for this position, especially on the grounds of the potential disruption to the operations of S S M U . In calling for this election, S S M U council­ lors clearly put the electoral component of democracy above the other “E ’s” of efficiency and effectiveness.

It’s time that S S M U councillors learn to heed the con­ sequences of their actions.

W ith the help of Jane’s Addiction, Bok was given the chance to speak at what may have been the largest abolitionist’s gathering in history. Th e Coachella Valley Music Festival is a Californian event that has evolved into an annual tradi­ tion. By accepting an invitation to appear on stage dur­ ing Jane’s Addictions headlining set, Bok had the chance to address over 40,000 people live. During his appear­ ance at Coachella, Bok challenged the audience to visit his Web site at iabolisb.com, and to support the Underground Railroad Project, which seeks out libera­ tion for Sudanese slaves.

Sudan’s Underground Railroad is a large-scale proj­ ect which is backed in part by Christian Solidarity International. This endeavour has been in existence since 1995. Organizers of the Underground Railroad pay Arab allies, who they call retrievers, to venture into northern Sudan and purchase the freedom of slaves. These retriev­ ers also help slaves to escape when purchasing salvation is not an option. Th e slaves take refuge in various safe hous­ es on the journey back to Soutbern Sudan. C SI also attempts to reunite newly freed slaves with their nuclear, or extended families.

The Underground Railroad has successfully freed 60,000 Sudanese slaves. The recent emancipation mis­ sion in December of 2001, in Sudan’s Awed county, resulted in the freedom of over 2,300 former slaves.

Much of the money needed to fund this work came from the proceeds of Janes Addiction’s Jubilee Reunion tour.

In December of 2001, Perry personally went out to Sudan to visit the newly emancipated slaves. People who witnessed Perry’s presence in Sudan said that his spirit was positively infectious, as he travelled from town to town, boom box in hand, partying with the people he had helped to free. Despite the grueling Sudanese heat, Perry still insisted on dressing to the hilt.

O n the band’s Web site, Perry is quoted with regards to his feelings of obligation to help bring about change.

He believes that “the voice that reaches out furthest to people is a musical one.”

If that doesn’t size up the power and relevance of music, I don’t know what does. ■

ontinuing on my quest to make the most of Montreal, I _ decided to check out the annual Chinese lantern festival, The Magic o f Lanterns, at the Botanical Garden until November 3. O n one of the coldest nights in early October, I layered, dug out m y mitts and headed off to work on this second instalment of m y cityexperiencing adventures. Not quite sure what to expect, I anticipated something grandiose and, well, magical.

Lanterns have been a Chinese tradi­ tion since the Han Dynasty (206 B .C .220 A .D .), when they were merely deco­ rative. Th ey took on greater significance when they were used to celebrate the 15th day of the first lunar month, starting around 581 A .D ., and for ringing in the New Year.

increasingly elaborate, varying in size, colour and shape. These little boxes of light, lit by oil lamps or candles, served not only as objects of decoration or part of festivities, but also as a way of telling legends and myths important to Chinese culture. Originally made of coloured paper or silk, the lanterns were decorated with calligraphy, riddles, paintings or gems and their frames were made of bam­ boo, metal or wood.

In 1990, Montreal and Shanghai reinforced their strong historical tie and worked together to create a space within the Montreal Botanical Garden dedicated to friendship and dreams. This union spawned the creation of the 2.5-hectare Dream Lake Garden. Designed by Le Weizhong, it is based on traditional gar­ dens of the M ing Dynasty (1368-1644) with several pagodas and outdoor courtyards.

Shanghai team who came to assemble parts from Shanghai— can’t get more authentic than that. Ever, since, the Chinese lanterns have been an attraction at the Botanical Gardens. Year after year, the exhibit seems to gain more and more attention.

The focus of this year’s festival is on Sun Wukong, a.k.a. the Monkey King.

Born from lightening striking a monkey­ shaped rock, the immortal Wukong is a very popular character in Chinese classical literature. Wukong’s story dates back to the 16th century and he’s one funky-looking dude: half man, half monkey. He had many special abilities, including being able to travel over clouds and change shapes. Living in the Blessed Land of Flower-Fruit, he was apparendy a nui­ sance to everyone (too much monkeying around), so some people put him in an oven to kill him. However, because he was immortal, he survived and became a disciple of Buddha.

Stepping beyond the entrance court­ yard of Dream Lake Garden, where the Monkey King is on display, you find yourself in a dimly-lit world of 700 handmade lanterns. It is as though you have just crossed the threshold into a far-away land— like, o h .. .China for example.

Visiting at night adds to the magic of the setting, and although it takes away from the botanical experience, so much added with the nocturnal atmosphere.

As you work your way through the winding paths, under the waterfall andto the top of the rock mountain, the beauty of the lanterns begins to sink in. A t the centre of the garden is the lake in which the main, magnificently-displayed lanterns are set. Th e colours are stunning and the lanterns extremely intricate; the images include a softly glowing Sun Wukong standing on a rock, the sacred peach tree, a bridge, fishermen, various animals and one rocky island.

Although high expectations are a recipe for disaster, I must say I am happy I finally went. It really is worth it. The Botanical Garden is not far away, only about 15 minutes by metro, from down­ town to Pie-IX on the green line.

Although it costs $8, the ticket includes entrance into the Insectarium.

Don’t go drunk; the paths are really uneven and you could probably hurt yourself. Give yourself about an hour to go through the entire garden leisurely (it closes at 9 p.m.), and don’t let first impressions allow you to prejudge what you are about to see. Kill Bill kills the competition Dany Horovitz

In the decade since Pulp Fiction came out and single-handedly revolutionized the movie industry as we know it, countless directors have followed in its massive foot­ steps with their own films. Some were good, most were not, but none of them were anywhere near the level of the origi­ nal.

Enter K ill Bill: Volume 1 from Quentin Tarantino, which reminds every­ one that there are no substitutes. From its opening scene, in which a beaten-up Um a

two parts and release Volume 2 in February instead of cutting an hour off, will under­ stand why.

It is without a doubt the most colour­ ful and stylish action movie in a long time.

Since The Matrix came out four years ago, every action movie since has tried to dupli­ cate its sequences. And while a style works fine for its original source, like Pulp Fiction, the alternatives have not come close to being as good.

Tarantino opted not to follow the trend of the time. It’s a good thing too because the result is a movie that will never go out of style. Every shot is worth taking

You cannot kill Anthrax Madeline Chamberlain Heavy metal legends Anthrax played a bone-crunching set at Spectrum to an eager crowd last Friday.

Th e curtains silently opened and the audience beheld a dark stage as the Blues Brothers theme song streamed out of the speakers. Suddenly, the mosh pit con­ vulsed and lurched to life as the band stormed the stage and played “W hat Doesn’t D ie.” Th e very memorable show had begun.

T h e audience, whose animation reflected the energy of the band, eagerly bellowed the lyrics to all the songs played, making the concert seem like one big metal sing-along. Edgy, tightly-played songs such as “Anti-Social,” “N F L ” and “Refuse to be Denied” made the pit go

wild. It was certainly not a place for the weak at heart.

Lead singer John Bush took some unnecessary time in between the series of crushing songs to preach to the crowd about not taking freedom for granted and being true to oneself. Luckily for the crowd, within minutes, it was back to another brutal song wrought with crunchy guitar riffs and shouted vocals.

Tw o minor disappointments were that the concert could have been a lot louder and the lead guitars a bit clearer.

At some points, it was a little difficult to hear the guitar solos, which can make or break a heavy metal song. * Besides those m inor quibbles, Anthrax proved that they have not lost their punch. ■

Th e story is simple: a unnamed ex­ assassin (Thurm an) and her entire wed­ ding party are killed at her wedding cere­ mony by her old boss, Bill. “Th e Bride,” as she is referred to, does not die, but instead lapses into a coma. Four years later, she awakes looking for revenge.

In one scene, Th e Bride, donning Bruce Lee’s signature yellow outfit, gets into a visually astonishing Katana blade fight with 88 assassins. W hen all is said and done, she lets the survivors know that they may leave, but not to take their ampu­ tated limbs with them. “Th e y belong to me now,” she says casually.

This is a different kind of action movie. It is one that exists in a world where women do most of the fighting, where all the villains live by codes of honour and the weapon of choice is a blade.

While this may only be one half of the full story, it is very satisfying in its own right. In fact, it just might be the best movie so. far this year. ■ W H A T:

From October 8 to 14, the Bad Boy Club of Montreal (BBCM), a non-profit AIDS organization, held the 13th annual Black and Blue Festival. An estimated 85,000 people attended the assortment of sports, social and cul­ tural events offered. Two members of the T r ib u n e 's staff attended what's considered to be the apex of this festi va!, the Black & Blue main event, on October 12 at the Olympic Stadium. Too tired from a week of partying to write an actual article, they instead chose to pay tribute to the event in less-traditional forms.

Canadian pioneer of abstraction perhaps bettered by pupil Noelle Duncan Le Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal is cur­ rently featuring the first posthumous retrospective of Montreal artist Yves Gaucher. Th e exhibit, which runs through January 11, traces the progression of his work over four decades as an innovator in abstraction. It covers his exploration of different media such as paint­ ings, prints, woodcuts and drawings.

Th e show displays the variety and multitude of his artwork, but requires an open mind and a taste for non-representational art. His style tends to be visually minimalist, yet conceptually complex, as represented by the famous “Jericho: A Variation.” In the acrylic painting in which two skewed geometric shapes— one yellow, the other red— are juxtaposed, he experiments with the use of the diagonal line to play with the eyes perception of depth and to disrupt the hegemony of horizontal and vertical lines in artwork.

Possibly his most interesting series is the infamous En hommage à Webern,” a collection of prints dedi­ cated to' Anton Webern, an early 20th century com­ poser of atonal music created under the tutelage of Arnold Schoenberg. The series reflects the concentrat­ ed bareness of Webern’s works with small, concise rec­ tangles of different sizes and colours distributed hap­ hazardly on a white canvas. Gaucher experiments with relief to provide an interesting new dimension to the

prints, making you want to reach out and touch them with their cool simplicity.

Other highlights are his experiments with copper and woodcuts seen in “Silences” and his portrayal of the role of the diagonal and negative space in “Phases.”

His use of several different canvasses for one work is exemplified in “Jaune, bleu & rouge IV,” a series of painted square canvasses in a diagonal direction like climbing stairs.

I had the unexpected pleasure of stumbling upon his pupil Nicolas Baier’s exhibit, which was much more experimental and more exciting overall than Gaucher’s. Baier uses a combination of photography and mixed media to create ambiguous, striking works that reflect his everyday life.

The most notable piece was a sequence of rectan­ gles filled with vague photographs and covered in something resembling rust. In “Capillaries,” a network of capillaries branch out horizontally from the side of the piece, shockingly red against a white background.

Baier’s weakest piece was a depiction of ordinary, everyday things from his life arranged in collage form on a large canvas, resembling an upscale high school art class concept of a materialistic self-portrait. W ith the exclusion of this piece, Baier’s talent for experi­ menting with media and composition is obvious.

Without a doubt, Baier is worth checking out, possi­ bly more so than Gaucher. ■

A lie n 8 R e co rd in g s This album is the newest from local Montreal label Alien 8, which is known for releasing ambient noise and Godspeed You! Black Emperor side proj­ ects. Who Will Cut Our Hair When Were Gone is a drastic departure for the label, existing firmly with­ in the realm of indie-pop. There is nothing bad to say about this album other than that 40 minutes is not enough. Every song is drastically different and yet remains firmly planted within the band’s over­ all sound. There are dark new-wave influenced passages, poppy keyboard songs, disco drum beats, and even a rap portion incorporated on this album, yet none of it falls into the realm of irony. As much fun as this album may be, it is certainly never a joke. This album is made by people who clearly love music and well before its end, the Unicorns make obvious with every note they play that they are an enthusiastic group.

Dakonas debut album combines guitar strings, drum beats and raspy voices to make one great album. O ff of Madonna’s label, Maverick Records, Dakona is a group of four guys from Vancouver who want to remind everyone “what a rock band should sound like.” Using the talent of Grammy winning producer Rob Cavallo, Dakona was able to create songs like “Waiting,” which, being the first song on the album, gets the listener pumped for the rest. Lead singer Rob McAllister’s desperate sounds and self-written lyrics are all about having love and lost and mov­ ing on. Other songs like “Soul for Sale” and Center of the World” seem a little forced in the way of “she took the money/she stole the car keys/told off the junkie at the liquor store,” but all in all, this is definitely an album worth taking a listen to.

Somewhat of a staple among Montreal’s young and trendy urbanites, the beauty of Globe lies in its philosophy: dine, drink and be merry. Although its philosophy is threefold, m y friends and I tend to skip the dining part since it could be a tad pricey— the cheapest main dish on the menu is $27.

A useful piece of advice: do not let the line fool you. Everyone gets in. The only requirement is proper attire and definitely no running shoes. If the bouncer tells you the restaurant is full to capacity, simply inquire about a table, even if it’s a fib, and you’ll be inside in no time.

Since Globe is primarily a restaurant, after 11 pm, a table equals a bottle, either of wine, cham­ pagne or hard liquor. Beware: a bottle of vodka starts at $150. Settle for the wine and spare your wallet. If you are female, there will be plenty of freebie vodka mixes midway through the night from drunken, rich, sleazy men or, if you’re lucky, goodlooking, twentysomething studs. For the guys, there is plenty of eye candy to keep you entertained. The waitresses look like models and female patrons dress the part.

M y friends and I usually initiate our night with a bottle of wine (starting at $40). The waitresses treat you like royalty even if you aren’t spending loads. Th ey make sure that your glass is never-empty and your ashtray is never full. For some reason, male waiters are a rarity at Globe. Perhaps the answer lies in the fact that the majority of big spenders are all men either trying to impress their date, or attempt­ ing to enamour a potential admirer.

By 1 am, the soft techno diverges into intense hip-hop and the aisle way transforms into a dance floor. The D J merges heart palpitating hip-hop beats with eclectic ethnic flavoured dance-inspired remixes of the Greek Zorba and the Jewish Hava Nagilah while the crowd responds with hollers and cheers. Party-goers dance and mingle until closing at three. Like clockwork, the lights go on and us dull normals are forced to snap back to reality and bid farewell to this posh fantasyland. ■

Julie Peters And no, the title is not ironic. It is actually quite serious. Nathalie Fiset devotes a book to every­ thing she likes about America, including the T V shows. It was hard not to throw the book against the wall so I satisfied myself by making a list of 10 things I hate about it.

1. It’s pointlessness. It vacillated between toting itself as a self-help book and a personal journal full of blind praise of the USA. 2. Bad spelling. You know you’re in for it when the back cover reads, “At last a positive book about what America is doing right and why it leaves nobody indiferrent [sic].”

3. E-publishing. One question I asked when reading this book was how this piece of self-indul­ gent trash ever got published. Th e answer, of course, is the Internet. Th e publishing company, pushbuttonpress.com, will print only the amount of books that are in demand. Zero in this case, for anyone who is counting.

4. The insult to my intelligence. I am not only annoyed, but also offended, that I wasted my time reading this 80-page atrocity. Fiset writes: “Take a minute to go get a paper and pen. I am waiting so please just do it. Are you back? Good!” This is not the K id s TV I watched when I was six where they pause the program for you to get a pen to write down their address.

5. Fiset’s simplistic perspective about serious issues. She touches on 9/11 briefly, offering an extended metaphor that ends with “the beach con­ tains enough sand to please everybody (the world is big enough for everybody).” Well done, I ’m sure we all feel a lot better now.

6. Th e exclamation points!!! Maybe readers just won’t get the point unless you tack on three or four of them!!! This makes everything so much more exciting!!! In fact, if you counted them up, you’d have more exclamation points than words!!!

7. Th e fact that Fiset is Canadian. One of the reasons she offers for America’s greatness is, “where else can you find lucky pennies on the ground every day?” U m ... Canada?

8. Th e way Fiset sets herself up for ridicule without realizing it. “It’s a known fact that America is the land of opportunity! This is why I chose to publish m y first (but not last!) book in America. I know I get a good chance.”

9. Th e fact that she admits all her research is from the Internet. “I have to say one thing: ‘B YE B YE LIB R A R Y C A R D !’ I don’t need you any more!”

10. Th is line: “You would think ‘butter pop­ corn’ that’s easy, they just have to show people eat­ ing popcorn and we would understand that it’s ‘but­ ter popcorn’.

It seemed simple but N N N O O O O H H H W !!!”

Th is book, despite being written by a Canadian, does retain some benign American spirit.

It is a light, purposeless book that is American in its innocent fluffiness. Unfortunately, this misspelled, badly written, overly punctuated waste of paper is so bad it actually scares me.

If e-publishing takes off, books will no longer be evaluated before they are put on the shelves.

Books as we know them will spiral into a literary hell full of Nathalie Fisets. It’s a good thing supply will only meet demand, seeing as there will likely be none. Save a few trees, some time and do yourself a favour: steer clear of this book. ■

Stingers in the 17th annual Shrine Bowl. The Homecoming game— which was much closer than the final score indicated— drew 4,312 fans to Molson Stadium on a chilly Saturday afternoon.

Despite winning the game, the Stingers looked nothing like the team that dominated McGill 46-1 three weeks ago. The matchup was close enough that Redmen wide receiver . Stefan Kalenchuk believes that with a little good fortune, the Redmen could have emerged victo­ rious.

“We had this game in control.

[Without] a couple bad breaks here and there, this game could have been ours,” he said.

That the Redmen would even keep things competitive seemed unlikely early, as Concordia knocked Campbell out of the game with a helmet to the shoulder when he attempted a pass. Cantin had started just once all season and, coming into the contest, had aver­ aged just 65 passing yards per game. He was, however, prepared to step in.

“I’m ready to play anytime.

You’ve got to be ready, because you don’t know what’s going to hap­ pen,” he noted.

After a sluggish start during which Concordia built a 10-0 lead, Cantin got the offence going late in the first half. He completed three consecutive passes for gains of 34, 15 and 18 yards, setting up an Anand Pillai field goal from 30 yards out. That made the score 103 as the teams headed into the locker room.

The Redmen seemed to build on Cantin’s late heroics, with the special teams unit coming up big at the start of the second half. Rob LeBlanc, normally deep on punt returns, came up to the line of scrimmage and blocked Mike Renaud’s punt. Adam Golden recovered, and the Redmen took over at the Stingers’ five-yard line.

Then came one of the moments of bad luck Kalenchuk mentioned. A Michael Samman rush on first down took the ball to the three-yard line, but Danny Tai couldn’t get into the end zone on either of the next two plays, squan­ dering the Redmen’s best opportu­ nity of the day.

Cantin indicated that this type of misfortune has been a running theme for the Redmen this season.

us this year,” he said.

Even so, Cantin wasn’t about to give up. On the ensuing drive, the Redmen had good field posi­ tion, and Cantin connected with LeBlanc for a 30-yard gain into Concordia territory. However, the running game—which gained just 34 yards on 20 carries— again stalled the offence, and McGill was forced to settle for a field goal, clos­ ing the gap to 10-6. Concordia would add a touchdown before the quarter was out, leaving the score 17-6.

The Redmen notched a field goal on their first possession of the final quarter, and the defence, led by sophomore Jimmy Rogers, held the Stingers’ offence in check t<5 get the ball back.

The Redmen offence ran into more bad luck, however. McGill had a good drive to start and was moving downfield when the refer­ ees questionably ruled that fullback Jonathan Sénecal fumbled a pass from Cantin. That seemed to diminish the Redmen’s hopes, which were crushed shortly there­ after, when Concordia quarterback Jon Bond hooked up with Brad Remus on a 60-yard touchdown pass that made the score 24-9 and put the game away. Pillai conceded a safety with 1:03 left to round out the scoring.

Some on the McGill side felt that the officiating played a part in the Redmen loss. Cantin expressed his displeasure with the fumble call in particular, and Head Coach Chuck McMann stated that a cou­ ple of the refs’ decisions were high­

ly dubious, although he refused to elaborate.

Nonetheless, McMann was reasonably happy with his team’s performance.

“We didn’t turn the ball over, which we had done in the past. I was pleased that the defence played tough, and [Cantin] did a good job for us,” he said. “We’ve made progress, so even though I’m disap­ pointed we lost, we’re on the right track. I told the guys they should be proud of what they accom­ plished.”

McMann also said that Campbell will likely be ready next Saturday against Bishop’s, but he refused to name the starter. The upcoming game will determine whether the Redmen earn the right to take on the conference winner,

or if the season ends disappointing­ ly early.

Regardless of who is in at pivot, Kalenchuk— named McGill’s Shrine Bowl MVP after catching five passes for 102 yards— feels the team can build on the offensive progress heading into the regular season finale.

The McGill Martlets took a lit­ tle longer than expected to open the scoring Friday night but eventually emerged with a 4-0 win over the Sherbrooke Vert et Or at Molson Stadium.

Sherbrooke (4-7-0) started strong, keeping the play in McGill’s end for quite some time and gener­ ating a few strong plays. Vert et Or forward Mylène Ringuet created a lot of trouble for the Martlet defence in the opening minutes. Finally, the momentum shifted in the midst of a scramble in front of Sherbrooke’s goal, as a ball from rookie Jenny White slowly rolled over the line and into the net before being cleared by a Sherbrooke defender. The referee ruled it was a goal, putting McGill (9-0-2) up by one in the 15th minute of play.

It seemed as though Sherbrooke might step up to the challenge when, just after McGill’s first goal, Ringuet broke through the defence h o m e co m in g

to go one-on-one with Mardet keep­ er Kristina Perusco. Ringuet was denied, however, as Perusco came out strong from the net to keep the McGill lead intact.

Other Martlet highlights included Sarah Chmielewski putting away a penalty shot after White was tackled from behind in the Sherbrooke box with 11 minutes to go in the first half, and rookie Katie Young’s first goal of the season, com­ ing just before the break. Her initial shot was deflected by the keeper, but she managed a beautiful chip to score the third McGill goal.

The final marker came off a nice header by White in the 60th minute after Danielle Day captured a loose ball to cross it back into play.

At one point in the match, Head Coach Marc Mounicot had most of his rookies on the field. A few injuries during the game, as well as veteran Toni Pascale having to sit out due to a red card she received against l’Université de Montreal last Monday, forced the sixth-year coach

to look to his younger players.

Assistant Coach Gino Lalli com­ mented on the young team.

“Even though there were hardly any returning players for most of the second half, it was great to see that the [Martlets] were still able to com­ pete,” he said.

Chmielewski, a rookie mid­ fielder, agreed.

“Although the play was shaky at times, this was most likely just nerv­ ousness in knowing that there weren’t any vets out there leading the way,” she said. “It was a good expe­ rience though, something to learn from.”

Lalli also mentioned that as the playoffs approach, the women are focusing on the tough games ahead.

McGill travels to Ottawa on Tuesday for a non-conference game that will help the team prepare for the upcoming competition.

The women travelled to Lennoxville on Sunday for a 6-0 pounding of Bishop’s. Danielle Day had a trio of goals in the win. ■

The men’s soccer team entered its game Friday night hoping for a spot in the playoffs. The Redmen entered the match in fouth place, but they were not out of contention.

However, after dropping a disap­ pointing 3-0 decision to l’Université de Sherbrooke, the Redmen are going to need some help if they want to continue playing into the post-season.

After the game, McGill Head Coach Adam Mar was able to explain the loss rather simply.

“In the first half, we missed a couple of glorious scoring chances,” he said. “They came back and the first chance [they had] on net they scored, and the game plan went out the window.”

McGill began the game as the aggressor, keeping the play in Sherbrooke’s end and generating sev­ eral good scoring chances, but failing to convert on any. Sherbrooke, sev­ enth in the eight-team Quebec con­ ference and hoping to spoil McGill’s playoff bid, rebounded from the close calls and began to mount an attack of its own, getting on the board in the 30th minute.

A Sherbrooke corner kick result­ ed in a scramble in front of the McGill net, and after two failed clear­ ing attempts by the Redmen defence, Sherbrooke’s Fabien Demougeot finally knocked in the third rebound past goalkeeper Dustin Diedricksen.

The goal seemed to deflate the Redmen, but they continued to gen-

erate scoring chances in the first half.

Forward and leading scorer Fernando Daluiso had a great opportunity to tie the game after a free kick by midfield­ er Jonathan Warin, but Daluiso s shot missed to the right of the net. Then, forward Juan Ignacio Zavagno— the most dangerous McGill player in the game— fired a shot that beat Sherbrooke keeper Charles Saulnier, but it sailed over the crossbar.

Failing to find the back of the net proved costly for the Redmen, because the second half saw Sherbrooke tighten up its defensive play that held McGill in check.

McGill’s defence, however, was not nearly as effective. The Red n’ White defenders had difficulties in keeping Sherbrooke’s forwards in front of them and clearing the ball from the McGill net.

In the seventh minute of the sec­ ond half, Sherbrooke doubled their lead. O ff a goalmouth scramble, a Sherbrooke forward received a pass with only Diedricksen between him and the goal. McGill’s keeper came out to challenge, but Nicolas Jover was able to lightly head the ball over him.

After spotting Sherbrooke a twogoal lead, the Redmen started press­ ing to get on the board and again nar­ rowly missed a scoring chance, when midfielder J.P. Drouin-Bouffard leapt up and headed the ball just over the crossbar.

At a luncheon comparable to the Golden Globe Awards, former McGill athletes took the spotlight as they accepted their place in the McGill Sports Hall of Fame Thursday.

The eighth annual induction ceremony, with light comedy and gourmet food on the menu, included alumni, present coaches and players, McGill dignitaries, and the inductees with their relatives.

Those who were honoured at the Sports Centre included Reg Sinclair, a former NHL all-star; Pauline McCullagh, an accomplished syn­ chronized swimmer, diver and freestyle swimmer; former Martlet basketball All-Canadian Tina Fasone; and the 1971-72 men’s swim team.

Three individuals were inducted posthumously, including Dr. George Maughan, a native of Toronto, who passed away in June at the age of 93.

Sinclair, a World War II veteran, offered some words of wisdom for today’s McGill athletes.

‘T h e four years I spent at uni­ versity were the greatest,” he said.

“Enjoy these years because they’re the best years of your life. It was an hon­ our and privilege to play for this institution.”

Sinclair also implored the Redmen to bring the championship back to McGill in a display of pride he takes in the school.

The two-time NHL all-star played for the Redmen upon return­ ing from the war and was a part of their last Queen’s Cup championship team in 1946. He was voted M W of the Senior Intercollegiate Hockey League in 1948-49 and went on to play three seasons in the NHL with New York and Detroit.

McCullagh, who delighted the audience with her confident, happygo-lucky attitude, became the first woman to win the Sprenger Memorial Trophy, presented annually to an individual that exemplifies true amateur sportsmanship in aquatics and contribution to swimming.

The 1971-72 swim team, which captured the Quebec conference title

and the Canadian university cham­ pionship, became the seventh team inducted into the Hall. A number of members from that squad were present to accept their plaque.

Football and hockey star Robert (Boo) Anderson and Canadian tennis hall-of-famer Bob Murray were also inducted posthu­ mously. Anderson, who passed away in 1973, played at McGill from 1919 to 1922. Anderson, also a rower at McGill, declined NHL offers from Boston and the Montreal Maroons.

Murray, who led McGill to three intercollegiate tennis titles from 1934-36, was the N o.lranked player in Canada in 1937, played at Wimbledon twice and was on the Canadian Davis Cup team in 1938.

Those in attendance included legendary Redmen football coach Charlie Baillie, and International Olympic Committee member and McGill Chancellor Richard Pound.

Former CBC broadcaster Bob Babinski was the Master of Ceremonies.

The Hall has honoured 59 athletes, builders and teams since it opened in 1996. ■

n episode of CBC’s This Hour Has 22 Minutes that aired just after the Sydney Olympics caught my attention a few years ago. It Was a clip that spoofed the “A Part of Our Heritage” commer­ cials, in which a Canadian Olympic runner gets passed in his race and winds up in fourth place.

g

The end of the commercial showed the Canadian being pleased with his finish, and the voice-over said 3 *o something to the effect of, “Canada’s proud Olympic athletes—just 3 missing the medals for centuries past and centuries to come.”

Unfortunately, that’s what seems to be on tap for Canadian 3 «3 athletes in the upcoming Olympics unless additional funding is o made available. The federal government pledged an additional $ 10million to amateur sport over the next two years, but with less than 10 months to go until the 2004 summer games in Athens, athletes in Canada are still financially strapped.

Recent studies have shown that 70 per cent of Canada’s elite athletes live under the poverty line, and top athletes receive a max­ imum of just $1,100 per month from Sport Canada. While most students would love to receive that kind of a bonus every month, the amount doesn’t even make ends meet for amateur athletes.

As a national team member myself—I competed in the World Kayak Championships-—I know that the $500 a month that I receive is usually gone before the cheque arrives. The amount cov­ ers my rent, but what about food, training costs and other daily expenses?

I’m one of the more fortunate ones, because my entire family helps me out. But, while my grandparents and parents give me money to cover the basics, my food budget is not big enough to allow me to have a proper athlete’s diet.

Although I am lucky that my training facility is cost-free and my coach’s salary is paid for by the Canadian Canoe Association, not all national team athletes are so privileged. Consider swimmers who have to pay for pool time, coaching and weight training facil­ ities. Almost every sport in Canada requires a significant financial contribution. As a result, the sport you love and work hard at becomes a heavy monetary burden.

Furthermore, what happens if an athlete also happens to go to university? Most students have enough difficulty paying for post­ secondary education as it is, without adding a sport that can cost more than tuition. There are no funds available to help athletes do both, so many competitors are forced to make a choice between sport and school. Since most athletes know that sporting careers are short-lived, education usually wins out. This is the harsh reality that athletes face, so it’s no wonder that every time the Olympics come around, Canada gets progressively lower in the medal standings.

Adam Vankoeverden, a recent silver medalist at the 2003 World Sprint Canoe/Kayak Championships, feels that the current system leaves a lot to be desired. “[Minimal government funding] forces Canadian athletes to seek significant financial assistance from family, friends and spon­ sors, or get full or part-time jobs,” says Vankoeverden. This mar­ ginalizes an athlete’s training time, and affects performance levels.”

Although the Feds fall short, there are organizations that put in countless hours of work, not only helping our athletes compete for medals, but assisting them in getting to the games in the first place.

The See You in Athens Fund, founded by Jane Roos, raises money for Canada’s Olympic hopefuls, and delegates it to those who apply.

But even with funds like Roos’, there is still not enough cash to go around.

The most reliable solution that most athletes seek is corporate sponsorship. I can relate from experience, though, that acquiring this is much easier said than done. I have received numerous letters of rejection from all kinds of companies.
