Costumes: goodbye dignity Natalie Fletcher It’s sad, but true: by the time we hit university, most o f us have passed our Halloween prime. N o more trick-or-treating, no more sorting out candy, no more free sugar in monumental proportions. Yet, rather than indulge in child hood nostalgia, w e seem to embrace the day for new reasons: its quirkiness, its parties, its mysti cism, and o f course, the chance to dress up. N o w for the sixty-fourthousand dollar question: what to wear? As far as what’s trendy, cos tume popularity usually follows prevalent m ovie trends, which explains the wannabe Scream killers that have been lurking about the last few years. Accordingly, this year, one would expect the advent o f a herd o f Apes intent on taking over the planet. Strangely enough, the only movie which has sparked costume creativity is M ou lin Rouge, for classy babes wanting to simulate Satines elegance, and for those who want to outslut themselves to the point o f dragqueendom à la Christina and L il’ Kim. Yet, period dress is also appeal ing for intellectual reasons: Political Science major W illy Blomme is em bodying historical sophistication as Christine de Pisan, a French fem inist. T h e m otivating drive behind her costume choice? Quite simply, the joy o f "dress[ing] up as a strong female figure and [wear ing] a medieval robe." Also intellectually-inspired are the many kids-at-heart struck by the Harry Potter craze. T h e down side is the $70 they will have to dispense for the ‘official kits’, which include, w e ll...a pair o f round spectacles. This is why some afi cionados may choose to make their own cost-effective costume, with spiked hair, wand and cape. Year after year, though, certain costumes seem to transcend fads,

Doing the time warp at the yearly Rocky Horror Picture Show...so forgive me, for I'm just a sweet transvestite luring in the downtown communi ty with a magnetic force. Generally speaking, guys reach for anything knightly, especially Musketeer apparel, which reveals an interest ing preoccupation with honour. This could also be related to the unflagging fixation with Batman and Superman costumes, the very epitome o f the male desire to be a superhero by sporting capes and tights. A n d then, there’s Elvis, whose legacy continues to be hand ed down from generation to gener ation in the form o f overly-orna mented sequin suits, which, some how, always sellout. Gals, on the other hand, usual ly prefer the path to seduction when selecting a costume. Those who want to show a little skin opt for the notorious French M aid out fit normal version or the disturbing dominatrix variety become a genie in a bottle, or bare their tummies as belly dancers. T h en there is the ever-invogue cheerleader getup which always seems to connote more than just ‘go team’ ; and the lascivious Marilyn Monroe-esque gear. Top it all o f f with a pair o f wings, the favourite female accessory, to com plete the whole tantalizing para doxical image. Fatal seduction is certainly the goal o f first—year Science vixens Claire Smith, A lex W ilson and Cydney Peck, who’ll be parading as Fembots, donning homemade duct tape dresses, "crazy huge hair, bitch boots, and a funny walk." Easilytempted guys, beware! I f originality and bizarreness is more your style, a great head-turn ing costume is one o f the hugely popular, absolutely hilarious largerthan-life caricature masks. The ultimate choice is the Coffee Lady, who all-too closely resembles the stereotypical greasy-spoon cashier with the colossal purple beehive,

pointy glasses and frumpy flowered dress. Uniqueness can give birth to even odder ideas, like the desire to masquerade as a mirror: Ph. D stu dent Hasan Karrar doesn’t quite yet know how he’ll create his show piece. " [I must] figure out the logis tics so as to not bump into people and kill them," he said. Naturally, with costume cre ation comes the very fine art o f accessorizing. Halloween cosmetic corners usually offer both cheesy face-paint and real special effect makeup, the kind which can pro duce revolting wounds and bruises well enough to convince even the worst skeptics that you’ve actually been attacked by a pack o f enraged sealions. Also a key accessorizing component: wigs. Try pink long curls and hot green highlighted pig tails, or look like your most loathed teacher with a mullet wig.

Patrick Fok That’s what Science student Feras Shami is thinking o f doing, in order to depict the strange demeanor o f his elusive chemistry teacher, whose muffled voice and furtive nature conjures up ghostly images. "H e disappears whenever you need to ask him a question!" he exclaimed. Longing to make a statement? Being ridiculously creative with accessories is always comical: com bine a Jean Chrétien mask with glow-in-the-dark hair-spray, a hula skirt and boa scarf, a pirate eyepatch and a Star Wars weapon. Presto: a Hawaiian punk-whore myopic bureaucratic space trooper! Ahem. If, however, you’d rather be the embarassor than the embarassee, deck out a vulnerable friend:
