For almost 40 years, interna tionally reknowned known scien tist, animal activist and w riter, Jane Goodall's revolutionary work w ith chim panzees in G om be Stream National Park in Tanzania has significantly contributed to knowledge about humans’ evolu tionary past. Her interactive study of behavioral patterns changed perspectives on scientific field research profoundly. One of her many observations that captivated the world was that of chimpanzees making and using tools, behaviour p re vio u sly thought to separate humans from other animals. Since 1975, the Jane Goodall Institute for Wildlife Research, Education, and Conservation has aimed to provide ongoing support for field research on w ild chim panzees. G o o d a ll continues to travel around the w orld on behalf of the environ ment, landing in M ontreal last week at Indigo Bookstore to sign copies of her latest book R eason f o r H ope.

C o -a u th o re d w ith P h ilip Berman (is this right?), Goodall candidly shares the unique experi ences and spiritual beliefs that have underlined her scientific work and life in general. And at the age of sixty-five, Goodall continues to inspire. In this book, she writes of her personal relationships, her

T h e Students' Society of M c G ill U n iv e rs ity co un cil last Thursday approved a m otion to change the manner in which stu dents become Senators. A jo int appointment process between the faculty associations and Senate Caucus members was voted in. The new by-law , however, fired *off a round of heated debate and eventu ally led to a compromise. Th e original proposal, intro duced by V P u n ive rsity affairs X a v ie r V a n C ha u , ou tlin e d an appointment process in the instance where a Senator is unable to fulfill his mandate. The proposed proce dure would require faculty associa tions to advertise, interview and present two candidates to Senate. From there, Senate Caucus would have the ultimate decision over the faculty association Senator. Arts

Undergraduate Society President Daniel Artenosi disagreed with the recently passed motion because of the shift of senatorial accountabili ty from the faculty to Senate. "I do believe that X a vie r's views of Senate are a lot different than what the faculty associations expect from Senate. He's looking towards putting together a team, whether it be more unified or effi cient. I'm not opposed to having a team so long as it doesn't under mine the true goal of the Senator which is to represent the Faculty's interest," stated Artenosi. "When you start trying to join and melt these various Senators onto one team, the fear is that the conse quence could be that you lose indi vidual perspectives. "I would feel much more sure knowing that my Arts Senator was representing m y interests and standing against a proposal which

other Senators were for if it bene fits our faculty instead of jumping in with the team for the sake of the team. The Senator shares an identi ty with the other students in the fa cu lty and I think there's an implicit undermining of the Faculty [under this new by-law]."

A m e n d m e n ts to th e by-law Three amendment suggestions were entertained before reaching the current amended by-law . The present amendment was a compro m ise w h ic h outlines a system whereby the faculty association fo rw ards tw o candidates to a Senate Caucus committee, which review s and appoints one. Th e Senate Caucus can also choose not to select a Senator from among the candidates at w h ich p oin t the Senate would have to go back to

a p p ro v e d the faculty association and solicit two more candidates and necessari ly choose one Senator from those candidates. S S M U President And re w Tisch le r applauded this effort as a satisfactory m iddle ground. "I think the amendment is a good way for everyone to ultimate ly be happy. It allow s Senate Caucus the ability to review. It's a two step process and I think it's a good happy m edium ." Tis c h le r added, "T h e first [am endm ent] removed Senate Caucus from the process entirely w hich removes Senate Caucus as a judge, albeit that the Faculty m ight forward a candidate that m ight be of very fine caliber and represents the faculty excellently, of how well the person might know of Senate.
