T h at code w as then po sted on tw o w eb sites in S w ed en a n d th e U .K . so th a t an yone c o u ld access e -m a il a c c o u n ts w ith o u t a p a s s ­ w ord and send e-m ail usin g o ther p e o p le ’s a c c o u n ts. T h o se w eb pages w ere destroyed as o f A u g u st 31, according to the reports po sted on Y ahoo! N ew s.

B ut after a quick read it’s clear th a t th e t o n g u e - i n - c h e e k “ b e e r a d s,” su p p o rted by 113 u n iv ersity p r e s id e n ts a c tu a lly r a is e p u b lic aw areness o f the dangers o f binge drinking.

A c c o r d in g to U n iv e r s ity o f M ichigan President L ee B ollinger, the ads actually aim to raise public aw areness o f the dangers o f binge drinking. “ I t ’ s im p o r t a n t f o r th e U niversity to address this problem in a v a r i e t y o f w a y s , ” s a id B o llin g e r. “N o d e c e n t u n iv e rsity can stand by and be inactive in the face o f binge d rinking.”

E xperts define binge drinking as consum ing five o r m ore succes­ siv e d rin k s f o r m e n a n d f o u r o r m ore successive drinks for w om en.

I was going to w rite a colum n about how all m y frien d s (m o stly m y m ale ro o m m ates and the guys

b o rin g , re p e titiv e c o m p u te r d u m ­ m ies, you get to fight y our friends, w ho are (hopefully) sm arter than a c o m p u te r. B u t b e tte r th a n b e in g sm a rt, th e y 're y o u r f rie n d s . T h a t m e a n s killing them is fu n — I m e an , w h at b e tte r w ay to ta k e o u t your fru s­ trations w ith y o u r frien d s than by k illin g them (well — their com puter representation).

T h e re 's a lso th e w h o le 'co o l' issue. I m ean, video g am e nerd or not I'm at best p retty co o l. Jam es B o n d is (I h o p e e v e ry o n e w o u ld agree) ab o u t the c o o le st guy ever.

H e's g o t all th e b e st clo th es, g ad ­ gets, cars and g irls. It’s like ev ery boy's dream .

F o r all m y life , I'v e th o u g h t th a t v id e o g am es w ere so le ly th e realm o f nerds and guys w ith 'kick me' signs on their backs. M y friends and I don't really fit this im age — I d o n ’t rem e m b er e v e r b ein g ca lle d 'p o in d ex ter', and m y frien d s are a varied group: a jock, a m usician, a lite r a r y ty p e a n d a c o u p le ra v e r burnouts.

It's ju s t this one gam e — Bond (I th in k i t 's a c tu a lly c a lle d G o ld e n e y e fo r N in te n d o 6 4 , b u t people w ho play call it Bond).

T h is is o u r g a m e , a n d to a frighteningly great extent, o ur lives.

D on't get m e w rong — it's not ju st my friends. A nybody w ho has ever played a video gam e loves this one.

In fa c t, I h a p p e n to k n o w th a t at least 33% o f the SSM U executive is also part o f the club.

If you aren't a player yourself, this colum n m ay seem a bit odd to you. B ut I don't w ant to discourage you from reading, so I suggest you take it as a sort o f anthropological s tu d y o f an o d d g r o u p , a lie n to yourself, kind o f like one o f those really w eird reality show s on Fox

(Stupid Cops, Stupider Criminals; Slow Kids, Fast Animals).

T he gam e does strange things to p e o p le . I h e a rd o f th is g u y (I heard o f him ? W ho am I kidding? It w as m y room m ate.) w ho w oke up early in the m orning and pain stak ­ in g ly u s e d th e p a r ts o f a c u t-u p cardboard box to constru ct a thing (I d o n 't know w hat else you could possibly call it) that divides the tele­ v is i o n in to tw o h a l v e s so th a t opposing team s can't see each oth­ er's screens. So now , we have this big cardboard thing hanging o ff the front o f the television.

P e o p le h a v e b e e n k n o w n to skip m ajor social events to play this g a m e . I t a ls o h a s a te n d e n c y to c a u s e s e r io u s h e a lth p r o b le m s ("Should we eat?" "Uh, later").

W hy all the fuss? I think there are a couple reasons.

First, guns. T he gam e is m ostly sh o o tin g p eople, and guys lo v e to shoot things. F ortunately (I alm ost w ro te u n fo rtu n a te ly — a g a in to o m uch B o n d ) sh o o tin g th in g s isn 't generally endorsed by our society, so the only place to live these fan ­ ta sie s out is in v id e o g am es. I'v e played m y share o f gam es, and the sh o o tin g in te rfa ce in this g am e is one o f the best, ever.

Snow-AP will be the first ever Open Air Pub in the win­ ter! This soon-to-be-famous event will take place in a fully heated tent on campus during the first weeks of second semester. The Snow-AP team will work throughout first semester planning the event, seeking sponsorship and recruiting volunteers. They will also run the event during the first weeks of second semes­ ter.

One o f the last vestiges o f the D u p le ssis era w ill soon be a part o f history as religious courses at the elem en tary and secon d ary le v els are p rogressively replaced w ith c u ltu r a l stu d y c l a s s e s o f world religions.

The reform w as the initiative o f the Proulx report, a provincial study o f religiou s education pub­ lished March 31, 1999. Organized by a task fo r c e o f the Q u e b e c ’s M inistry o f Education, the role o f d e n o m in a tio n a l s c h o o ls in Q uebec’s multicultural society was seen as outdated.

The report ju stified this per­ s p e c t iv e b y e x p la in in g th a t Q uebec’s diversity has led to “the e m e r g e n c e o f a so c ia l o b je c tiv e that, although not new , has taken on a new dim ension: that o f rein­ forcing the social coh esio n o f all Q uebecers, w hatever their origin.”

T he team is hoping to finish the car in tw o years, s o it can be e n te r e d in S u n R a y c e 2 0 0 1 . a biannual solar car race. T he c o m ­ p e titio n ta k es p la c e in the U .S , and w ill have either a north-south or e a s t -w e s t ro u te. T he p a r tic i­ p a n ts a re p r e d o m in a n tly fr o m o th e r N o r th A m e r ic a n U niversities and Japan.

D esp ite such w idespread sup­ port, putting together a solar car is s till very e x p e n s iv e . T im e is also an issue; tw o years m ay seem like am ple tim e, but every day is needed w ith all the effort required for the project.

“W e need to plan this car out really w e ll,” explains team veter­ an N ed M oore. “W e need to get it right in the first shot. W e d o n ’t h a v e the tim e , or the m o n e y to build m ore than one car.”

The featured performers are p ia n is t P a u l S te w a r t, so p r a n o Donna Brown and c ellist A ntonio Lysy, with Richard Roberts, violin, M a rtin H a c k le m a n , h o rn , J oh n O r lo w s k i, c la r in e t, S te p h e n L e v e sq u e , b a sso o n and M ic h a e l Leiter, double bass. The works on the program focus on Strauss’ ear­ lier w o rk s, such as h is rom antic c e llo so n a ta and h is F our E arly Songs.

H erb aliser captivates

that has played to sold out shows at im p o rta n t lo c a tio n s su ch as the M o n tr e a u x Ja zz fe s t iv a l in Switzerland as well as our own jazz fe s tiv a l th is su m m er in M ontreal.Their blend o f acid jazz, funk and hip-hop has mass appeal fo r a d iv e r se a u d ie n c e w h ich is r e fle c te d in the e c le c tic m u sical tastes o f their fans.

Like most Ninjatune acts they d e fin ite ly know how to put on a good show. Walking into the venue we were confronted with a live art installation by H eavyw eight, a trio o f graffiti artists that are along for the tour. The artists produce graffiti style portraits o f several important fig u r e s in th e s c e n e , in c lu d in g G allian o and the H erbaliser’s DJ O llie T e e b a . T h e se w o rk s in p rogress are com p leted at sh ow s across North America. The finished products are then displayed at the venue, bringing an import aspect o f th e h ip h op u n d er­ ground to the forefront.

T h e Determination Band, a f i v e - p ie c e reggae sound sy stem opened up the show along with Jah Cutta. The in clu ­ sion o f an act that played everything from bass-heavy dub to upbeat ska ed u ca ted the crow d in a v ib e to w hich m ost w ere unaccustom ed.

N e x t up w a s the h ig h ly la u d ed R oots Manuva, a young, inventive M C from L o n d o n w h o is a ls o signed to the Ninjatune label. His debut album Brand N ew S econ d

Hand has gain ed critical acclaim both in the UK and North America.

On stage his slo w draw ling style was backed by another MC and DJ M J, a d e c e n t b ea t ju g g le r and scra tch tu r n ta b list. In b e tw e e n R oots M anuva’s many dedications to the “sex y M ontreal la d ie s” he dropped “Clockwork” (a track that was included on the Funkungfusion Ninjatune compilation), and “Juggle T ings Proper,” the first sin gle o ff h is album . A fter a lon g w ait for R oots M anuva to com e to tow n I must say that I w as im pressed by his strong yet modest style.

Finally the full Herbaliser band took the stage to the obvious delight o f the capacity crow d. The group played lots o f acid jazz-flavoured hip-hop tracks with an extrem ely distinct sound, blending elements o f dub, ska and trip-hop. From the minute they took the stage they had the audience in the palm o f their collective hand, leading them into a w ild fr e n z y d u rin g th eir m ore upbeat numbers or to a chill calm during som e o f their down tem po ja m s. T he band w a s h a v in g so much fun on stage that their energy seem ed to infect the crowd driving them to take to the dance floor like lem m ings. Particular highlights o f the show came when they brought out Roots M anuva for a track, and when a nameless hard-rhyming MC m ade a b r ie f c a m e o on “T h e Blend.”

F or th o s e o f y o u that missed the show, The Herbaliser is bound to return in the near future.

They truly have a lot o f respect for Montreal— the front m an o f th e band even suggested that they would com e to live here they liked it so m uch. T o top o f f the n igh t, they cam e out for a sec­ ond encore, playing a song with the same high level o f energy that they had m a in ta in e d th r o u g h o u t th e show . Overall this w as one o f the best shows I’ve seen in a while, and I am already awaiting their return.

from Party o f Five, Sarah (played by H ew itt) heads to N ew York C ity where she w ill search not only for herself, but her biological father. A great story lin e , e x c e p t w e h ave already seen Julie pursue the same quest on Felicity (the only difference is Julie is searching for her biologi­ cal mother). The show should be a

bit o f a disappointment to the teen TV crowd since they re-shot the pilot after sw itching the time slot from after Party o f Five on T uesday to 8:00pm on Monday, directly before Ally McBeal. Because Ally McBeal draws an older audience, the pre­ miere was reworked to appeal to a more mature crowd.

Mondays at 9:00 have become the great battleground for networks.

A B C and F ox are fin a lly poised to pick up the slack. ABC should nab the 9:00-10:00 PM hour with it’s new show Wasteland, about six post-college friends who face the stereotypical problems o f dead-end jobs and tangled love lives. Though the show sounds like a total rip-off o f Friends, there are a few things that distinguish it from its lighter hearted c o m p a n io n . O ne, it is a drama. T w o, it features R eb ecca G ayh eart (A K A D y la n ’s w ife , Noxem a Girl, the ingenue in Urban Legend) and Marissa Coughlin (look up), and most importantly it’s creat­ ed by Kevin Williamson, the genius

Monday night, the nine o ’clock slot has been filled by the new hour-long G et R eal. The show had such promise: high sch ool, young actors, and the Fox network, but it fa ils m iserably. The kids on the sh ow are all recycled. The ninth grade a d o le sc e n t boy is a K evin Arnold, rip-off, the teenage wonder girl is Joey/F elicity, and the older brother is lik e one big M ountain D ew ad. The show should not be watched by anyone and will be cer­ ta in ly not be around to see Christmas. To add insult to injury Get Real w ill go up against The West Wing, N B C ’s new drama about the p r e sid e n c y that fea tu res M artin Sheen and Rob Lowe. This big bud­ get show promises to be a huge suc­ cess among the older demographic.

Boy Meets World is back, which m akes it the best show on Friday nights. Not that it’s such a challenge to topple such fare as Harsh Realm and Badlands. The former will fea­ ture Scott Bairstow, which means it should in no way be worth watching.

The latter .is about a rookie cop who fights with his captain as he patrols the streets o f P h ila d e lp h ia . H e would leave the job, but coppin’ is in his blood, plus his sexy partner is showin’ him the ropes o f being a top flight police officer. This show could be worth yoür time.

S aturday 8:00-8:30pm , NBC launches a new show called Freaks and Geeks about high school in the early eight­ ies. Looks like a winner. Other than that, watch hockey or, gag, turn off the TV.

M y stalling was in part due to my fear that m y rigor­ ous education m ight not have pre­ pared m e for the linguistic adven­ ture fo n d ly c a lle d le jo u a i. T h is w eek , I decid ed to take the leap.

With courage in m y heart and my Ontario high sch ool certificate o f bilingualism taped to m y shirt, this little anglo proudly walked through the front doors o f the Théâtre du Rideau Vert. At the end o f the perfom ance I left with tears in my eyes and certificate banished to my back pocket Encore une fo is is touching, despite the language barrier.

Up With Theatre Carrie Schoemer means big disappointments. Encore une fois exceeded my expectations in som e w ays, but w as a let-down in others. It is a good play, with a so lid scrip t and fa n ta stic acting; L a fo n ta in e and B r a ssa r d w o rk together naturally as a mother-son duo, and each displays a w ide range o f e m o tio n in a su b tle , r e a listic s ty le . B rassard p la y s th e K ev in A rn old -typ e character w h o look s back on old tim es with his mother w ith equal parts lo v e and regret.

They offer a fine exam ple o f how to carry a dialogue-driven show with few props, a minimal set and simple costumes. The play is also funny, if you understand the jokes, the crite­ ria for w h ich se e m e d to in clu d e being a) French-speaking, and b) over 45. A udience m em bers o f all tongues and ages, how ever, w o n ’t be able to m iss the touching senti­ ment o f the play, which is refresh­ ingly honest and real.

N ev erth eless, the bareness o f the play provides a stark contrast to the last fifteen minutes o f exciting sur­ prises, w hich leap out at the audi­ en ce like a m agician pulling theatricks from a hat. On the one hand, this last scene gave me a glim pse o f the possibile energy the play could have had. On the other hand, the constrast made the final m om ents all the more exciting and vibrant.

Y o u n g a n g lo stu d e n ts looking for fast-paced political the­ atre should look elsewhere, but sen­ sitive mamma’s boys and girls with an ear fo r Q u é b é c o is w o rd -p la y should get in line - fast. The Scrappy Bitch Tour co n ­ sists o f three soloist perform ing a rotating set, with occassional num ­ bers su n g to g eth er. Perhaps the greatest ob stacle for M cG ill students looking to play g o lf is transportation. If y o u ’re liv­ ing downtown, in the ghetto or rez, and don’t have access to a car, it is nearly im possible to find a course accessible by public transportation.

One ex cep tio n to this rule is th e M e a d o w b r o o k G o l f C lu b , located at 8372 C ote-St.Luc Road.

A ll you have to do to get there is h o p o n th e 6 6 b u s at th e G u y Concordia metro stop, and bear the r id e a ll th e w a y d o w n th e Boulevard, past Decarie to the end o f Cote-St. Luc, and voila.

W hile the M eadowbrook G olf Club w ill never be confused with a P G A c o u r se , it d o e s p o s s e s s 18 holes that are som ew hat challeng­ in g . A m a jo r d e f ic ie n c y o f th e course is that the fairways resem ble th e ro u g h and v ic e - v e r s a .

F u r th e r m o r e , th e g r e e n s are extrem ely bumpy, difficult to read, and so m ew h a t ou t o f top sh ap e.

N evertheless. M eadowbrook offers a viable round o f g o lf at a decent price. After noon on the w eekends, rates drop to under thirty dollars; after tw o o ’clock, they drop to $24.

An interesting course located in Laval is G o lf UFO. It has lights and is open for 24 hours. W hile I have never played it m yself, I can ju st im agin e teein g o f f at 1 a.m . and f i n is h i n g a rou n d at f i v e o ’clock in the morning. UFO g o lf boasts 36 holes, in addition to a par 3 lob w ed g e cou rse. Its rates are reasonable, and never eclipse thirty dollars. Prices here, though, go up for the night shift.

W hile this may sound far, it is only about a 25 minute drive from downtown. Lafleur’s prices are the cheapest in town, with a round dur­ ing the w eek co stin g tw enty d o l­ lars, $15 after tw o p.m. The course is far superior to M eadow brook, and is much better maintained.

T w o m iles down the road from L afleur is the C aughnaw aga G o lf Course, w hich is in excellent con­ dition. It boasts som e challenging h oles, including a beautiful par-3 island hole surrounded by a lake.

Far m ore ch a llen g in g then either L a fle u r and M ead ow b rook , Caughnawaga’s fairways are clean­ ly cu t, and it ’s green s sm o o th ly maintained. A round w ill cost thirty dollars on the w eek-end, and $26 during the w eek, $18 after two.

Though Redmen games are m ostly exciting affairs, it’s the action on the sid elin es and in the stands that makes a football game truly an event.

Rather than profiling the ath­ letes on the field, we turn our atten­ tion to the cheering fans, the unsung h eroes and the asp irin g gridiron gladiators.

“If I played football I’d be one o f those big guys in that front row that beat the snot out o f the other g u y s. T he b lo ck ers, or w h atever they’re called. Maybe put on some weight to do it. I can’t run very fast so I’m no wide receiver. And I can't throw very well, I’m not that coor­ dinated so no quarterback for me. I just want to be one o f the big guys that kind o f sits there, you know , kicks a little bit o f ass. W hen it’s time to get violent, it’s time to get violent.”

A t on e poin t early in the tourna­ ment, they were 9 0 minutes away fro m p la y in g in th e g o ld m ed a l gam e, but the team couldn’t hold on to the lead in a key round-robin match.

“It w as a good experience for the girls at the national c o m p eti­ tion, even though w e w eren’t quite ready to com pete at the last level,” said M ounicot.

D efence, a traditional strength o f M artlet team s, has a new look this year.

A fter being b lessed with one o f the best goaltending tandems in the league for the past few years, the M artlets w ill rely on 17-year old American import Jessica W hite to hold the fort in net. M ou n icot feels that she w ill need to improve as th e se a so n p r o g r e ss e s, but is n e v e r th e le ss ready to handle the task. “ Sh e has a great w ork eth ic and great ability, but is very young, sh e’ll have to learn a lot,” he said.

T he M artlet b ack field is also r e v a m p e d . T h e v e r s a t ile J u lia Scrase, w ho perform ed w ell play­ ing all p o sitio n s last season , w ill lead the backfield. She w ill anchor the M c G ill d e fe n c e , a lo n g w ith Julie Laurin, who is the only thirdyear player on the club. Sophomore A sh lee Gentry, w ho im pressed the coach in g staff in a fe w starts last year, and rookies C hristie F inney and Julia Penninpede w ill also fill important roles.

“W e had the b est d efen ce in C a n a d a la s t y e a r ,” c o m m e n te d M ounicot. “W e have a lot o f good talent com ing in; I’m hoping w e ’ll defend as w ell this year.”

S e c o n d -y e a r veteran s Kiran N a y a r and S o p h ie L abrom w ill form the backbone o f the Martlet m idfield. The team received good new s when it learned that Nayar, a third-year m edical student who had doubts about playing another sea­ son, w ill return for a final year. The strong tw o-w ay player scored four goals and w as chosen as a secondteam All-Canadian last season.

“W e’re very, very pleased that sh e ’s c o m in g b a c k ,” sa id M o u n ic o t . “ S h e ’ s an e x c e l le n t player, and I consider her as one o f the leaders o f the team. Everybody is happy with her decision.”

C o -c a p ta in L a b r o m ’s p la y ­ making skills w ill be an asset in the m idfield. N ew com ers Carly Dean, J essica H aw ker, M egan O ’R eilly and Katherine M cK inley w ill also be im portant players in M c G ill’s transition game.

U Q A M has reportedly added a fe w p la y e r s fro m th e s e m i-p r o Laval D ynam ites team o f this sum­ mer’s W -League and may be ready to form a p o w erh o u se. B is h o p ’s has a lso m ade strides in its pro­ gram, and Laval, despite the losses o f som e key players, w ill also be strong.

W h ile th e te a m is c le a r ly building for the future, M ounicot feels that all the elem ents for a con­ tender are already in place.

Though M cG ill may be lack­ ing playing experience at the uni­ versity level, many have played on their resp ective provincial team s.

T h e M artlets m ay n ot d o m in a te lik e last year, but th ey fe e l that their ultimate goal o f a medal in the N a tio n a l to u r n a m e n t is w ith in reach. “(The lack o f experience) w ill be a factor in som e gam es, it could b e a p r o b le m ,” h e sa id . “W e ’ ll make mistakes, but it’s all a part o f the learning process. I’m very opti­ m istic that w e ’re building a great te a m fo r th e n e x t tw o or th ree y ea rs, and w e ’ll b e c o m p e titiv e right aw ay.”
