New study looks at who gets into med school

Prospects for m edical school applicants have w orsened over the last three decades. In 1965, m ore than h a lf o f all ap p lican ts could an ticip ate an offer o f adm ission.

Today only one in five applicants is lucky. Such a highly com peti­ tive situation has led to questions a b o u t th e f a ir n e s s o f m e d ic a l schools’ adm ission criteria.

A study released last w eek by th e A s s o c ia tio n o f C a n a d ia n M edical Colleges investigated the relationship betw een certain char­ a c te ristic s o f ap p lica n ts and the chance o f being adm itted to a fac­ ulty o f m edicine. In particular the stu d y lo o k e d at th e a p p lic a n ts ’ p ro v in c e o f re sid e n c e , sex, and academic perform ance as reflected in M e d ic a l C o lle g e A d m iss io n Test scores.

“M y intention is to get people to look at how selection is taking place,” said Eva Ryton, director of th e O ff ic e o f R e s e a r c h an d I n f o r m a tio n S e r v ic e s o f th e ACM C, and author o f the report.

“T he num ber o f m ed school places are not distributed in p ro ­ portion to population densities of th e p ro v in c e s in w h ich m ed ical e d u c a tio n is p r o v id e d ,” s a id Ryton.

Success rates were low er than a v e r a g e fo r a p p lic a n ts fro m O ntario, largely due to the reduced n u m b e r o f p la c e s in m e d ic a l schools at O ntario universities.

U n d er th is le g isla tio n , th e term “ sp o u se ” w o u ld h av e been re d e fin e d to include any tw o people w ho live together in a conjugal relationship, regardless o f their sex. L aw s w ith regard to survivor pensions, inheritance, hospital visitation rights, pow er o f attorney and adoption w ould also have been am ended to include sam e-sex couples.

T his re-evaluation o f the notion o f couple and fam ily inspired angry debate both on the public and governm ent levels.

T he C oalition for E qual fam ilies actively fought for B ill-167 throughout the sum ­ m er and the D ay o f A ction is a rem inder to all C anadians that their fight continues. The protests also pressured the governm ent to m ove sw iftly w ith the proposed am endm ents to the C anadian H um an R ights A ct, as w ell as Bill C-41 w hich relates to hate crim es.

Concern over new student zoning regulations A new O fficial C ity Plan is underw ay in K ingston. T he ruling w as handed dow n by the O ntario M unicipal B oard on O ct.7 after som e am endm ents. T his plan seeks to zone students as a separate land-use category and w as highly contested by the A lm a M ater Society (A M S) o f Q u een ’s university. T he A M S felt that the City P lan gave the city o f K ingston too m uch pow er over w here and how students could live.

In light o f the am endm ents, Jen Speer, the m unicipal affairs com m issioner for the A M S feels that a com prom ise has been reached but that they w ill have to carefully m on­ itor the City o f K ingston in their im plem entation o f the plan. T he new settlem ent focus­ es on designing houses that w ill ensure that students have access to accom m odation that is o f the sam e standard as that available to residents. H ousing m ust b e safe, sanitary and affordable fo r students.

T he m ain concern for S peer is that the C ity plan m ight place a lim it on the num ber o f occupants w ithin a residence, or regulate the student concentration w ithin the student housing area. T he AM S is also w orried that a m ore stringent building code m ight create higher standards for the landlords to m eet and that this extra expense w ill translate into higher rent for tenants.

A nother point em phasised by the A M S is that student lifestyles are different and she suggested that building codes should incorporate m ore porches and balconies for students. S peer intends to discuss w ith the H ousing Issues C om m ittee about the possi­ bility o f conducting a student poll to incorporate student opinion into the process.

It finally happened. A fter m onths o f m edia saturation, a day has passed without major news from the O.J. Simpson murder trial. No news of DNA tests being allowed, or murder weapons discovered, or unautho­ rised biographies floating about the pages of daily newspapers.

W hether O.J. Simpson is guilty or not is for the court to decide.

U nfortunately, the past several m onths clearly indicate that the m ain­ stream — and not-so-mainstream -— media are unwilling to let Simpson face the music. So great has been the journalistic enthusiasm that Simpson stands little chance of receiving a fair trial. That is the greatest injustice of all.

Tw o possible scenarios exist here: Sim pson m urdered his w ife, Nicole Brown-Simpson and her friend, or he did not. However, because the judicial process has been hijacked by the media, a fair trial may never happen. If Simpson is innocent, and the media certainly does not leave that impression, he may go to jail for a crime he did not commit.

On the other hand, if Simpson is guilty of committing the double homicide, his lawyers may reap the greatest benefit from the media fren­ zy. Because Simpson is guaranteed the right to “due process of law” by the Constitution of the United States, it is conceivable that his lawyer, Ron Shapiro, may at some point request that Judge Lawrence Ito declare a m is­ trial. The case for granting one is valid. Finding a panel of twelve jurors in the United States, let alone in Los Angeles County, who are not preju­ diced against the defendant will be a difficult task. Impossible maybe.

The real defendant in this circus should be the reporters and editors of Associated Press, CNN and the other networks, all of whom should be ashamed of the manner in which they have treated this issue. Time proved right the critics that crow about m edia “agendas” when it retouched a photo of Simpson for its cover — the same week that Newsweek printed an almost identical photo without doctoring. Time’s cover made Simpson look darker than normal, more sinister. More black. Definite media objec­ tivity there.

Time was admonished for the photo, and quickly apologised. Not that the “everyone makes mistakes” idea should not apply to media, but that one was colossal, and represents a far greater problem within America than is perceived generally.

The problem is that the media is so monolithic and insulated from attack by the m ajor First A mendm ent protections that it has used the courts to obtain that nothing or no one can touch it now. There has not been enough introspection in the m edia when it covers these events.

American editors and reporters screamed and yelled about rights and free­ dom when an Ontario Court judge ruled that details of Karla Homolka’s murder trial be sealed. The publication ban was necessary though, because Homolka’s estranged husband Paul Teale awaits trial on similar charges.

If details of her trial were spread across the pages of the Globe and Mail, the Gazette, and the N ew York Times, Teale would never receive a fair trial. Now at least he has a chance, and the system will serve him as it should. Hopefully, if he is guilty of the crimes of which he is accused, he will go to jail. If innocent, he can rightfully be acquitted.

A fair trial, and due process, are one o f the cornerstones of a democ­ ratic and just society. Everyone deserves that right. The media is denying

Sunday night I was sitting at home, recovering from a series of H allow e’en-related binges. Feeling particularly apathetic, I decided to spend the evening planted in front o f my television set with a two litre bottle o f Coke in a bid to rehydrate my drought-stricken self.

Wandering the channels, I was imm ediately struck by a desperate newscast on CBS anchored by vet­ eran n ew sm an S an d er V an o cu r.

T hrough live reports from around the w o rld and scenes o f carn ag e and destruction, I was informed that th e E a rth h ad b e e n s tru c k by a se ries o f g ia n t astero id s. A s th e w orld’s stock markets crashed and American F-16 fighter jets streaked into action to counter the asteroids with nuclear missiles, the reputable Mr. Vanocur kept the viewer up to date with reports from Reuters and the Associated Press, among others.

A n d th e n th e p h o n e ra n g . I raced to pick it up, confused and distraught by the unexpected end of th e w o rld . It w as m y m o th e r scream ing at me to m ake for the basement before the expected colli­ sion of another, even bigger aster­ oid. It was then that I was informed that what I was seeing was not actu­ ally happening.

A pparently my m other and I w ere n ot the o nly ones w ho had their evening upset by Mr. Vanocur and his team o f “reputable” journal­ is ts . A c c o rd in g to M o n d a y ’s G azette, CBS sw itchboards w ere jam m ed with calls from panicking viewers inquiring about the new s­ c a st’s validity. W as the CBS n et­ w ork’s attempt at a gimmick really worth the ensuing hum iliation felt by m yself, m y m o th er and th o u ­ sa n d s o f v ie w e rs a ro u n d N o rth America? (Ed - Yes!)

D espite attem pts to disclaim the events th at w ere being aired, CBS managed to disrupt the valued calmness of a Sunday evening. As a network, CBS has a responsibility to its view ers and I feel that this duty has been breached.

Did CBS consider the potential repercussions of their m ock-new s­ cast? I ’ll bet that nine months from now, our w o rld ’s already strained p o p u la tio n b ase w ill be fu rth e r pressured by a jum p in the number illegitimate children and unwanted pregnancies caused by the rampant h ed o n ism in sp ire d by th e show .

H ow m any m a rria g e s h av e now b ee n sta in e d by th e re v e la tio n s inspired by the belief that life was about to end and there was nothing to lo se? “I n ev e r lo v ed you, y a ’ greasy, hairy slo b ”, “ Y eah, lik e ­ w ise, y o u c ra z y w itc h ,” ec h o ed through the bedrooms o f the nation.

The errors of Octobre

The film Octobre tells the story of the FLQ cell that abducted and murdered Pierre Laporte in October 1970. T he film d em o n strates the silly simplifications that lie behind left-leaning separatist ideology. The f ilm ’s d ire c to r P ierre F ala rd e au glam ourises this silliness. Octobre tries to win sympathy for members o f th e c e ll. T h e y d e s e rv e o n ly scorn.

One scene has the best looking of the terrorists justifying himself to L ap o rte. T he cu te, in ten se, gunw ielding young m an speaks p as­ sio n a te ly o f h is e x p lo ita tio n by an g lo p h o n e b o sses. H e te lls th e government member how the fran­ c o p h o n e w o rk in g c la s s g e ts no respect.

A n o th er scen e has the m ost bohemian looking abductor (he has lovely long locks), describing the behaviour of one o f his anglo boss­ es. The corporate capitalist would take french w om en w orkers up to

his private office during lunch hour to exploit them.

The two scenes are supposed to explain why these young men are members of the FLQ. They want to fight the system, man. But then why a re n ’t they form ing unions? W hy aren’t they organising strikes? Why a re n ’t they lo bbying th e govern­ m ent? These constructive system ­ fighting measures are all available to citizens of a democracy, however m uch less ex citin g they are than arms-toting and abduction.

Brainy Bemie, Wacky Willie and other McGill myths debunked Nomad’s Land T e d Fr a n k e l

I c o u ld n ’t w ait to w rite this colum n. O ver the last five days, I ’ve littered my home with writing plans, schem atic m aps and rough drafts so as to best unleash my jour­ nalistic epiphany. You see, I have uncovered the soul o f M cG ill — th e p e rso n a g e w h ich tra n sc e n d s every student, faculty member and bureaucrat at this school.

O u t o f re s p e c t fo r o u r ho ly hierarchical head, I ’ll refer to him only as “B o” in my exposé. It all began the night I accidentally stum­ bled upon B o ’s hum ble throne in the bowels o f the Physical Plant. I was virtually winded by revelation when I first witnessed our leader as he w as d e v is in g th e 1995 fa ll semester calender, making notes as he madly flipped through the pages o f the G uide to the H oly D ays of W orld Religions. He w ore sim ple garb-jean overalls that enveloped his am ple gut, his T -shirt u n d er­ n e a th re a d in g , “ C o -E d N a k e d B ro o m b all”. A s he looked at me from behind his uneven desk, we both realised the magnitude of my discovery.

He agreed to talk to m e on the condition that I never give out his E-mail address. I gladly complied, em barrassing m yself with childish oaths w hich I giddily recited. We got d o w n to the b u sin e ss o f the interview as soon as he got off the phone with Lloyd Robertson.

“First of all Bo, how long have you been running the show here at McGill,” I began. “ I ’d say since about 1983 or whenever ‘T hree’s Com pany’ went off the air,” he said as he picked at his thick reddish goatee, revealing a sunflow er seed w hich dropped to the cement floor. “I was a writer for

the se rie s and w hen it w as c a n ­ celled I took a job in O ttaw a with the Tories. They wanted my help in w riting the M eech Lake A ccord,” he said.

“So how did you w ind up at M cGill?” I asked.

“I bailed the Tory ship when the going was good. Then I took a jo b at the P hysical P lan t h ere at McGill. I was the Grand Pubbah of this here school within months,” he boasted.

“You can’t honestly say you’re m o re p o w e rfu l th a n P rin c ip a l Shapiro,” I challenged.

“Please,” he said slipping back in h is s h e e p -s k in L a z y -B o y .

“Shapiro is the Barney to my Fred, h e ’s a fig u re -h ead . W ho do you suppose thought up that new fiscal plan? Baby Bem ie?” m ocked Bo. “ W a it a m in u te B o ,” I said looking up from my pad. “Are you im plying that M cG ill has already orchestrated an official response to Lloyd A xw orthy’s proposals?”

“Alright Frankel, you got it out o f me,” he said. “I’ll let you in on the truth.”

As he p o u re d o u t h is m a s te rm in d scheme, his tattooed arms flailed in all directions, m ist spraying from his mouth as he denounced student opposition of tuition hikes and the federal governm ent’s lack of com ­ mitment to education. He preached a b o u t c o lle c tiv e in te r e s ts an d efforts. My heart raced as he gave his account. His story was contro­ v e r s ia l, a b s u rd a n d b e s t o f a ll, unsubstantiated. I decided I ’d go

straight to the Daily.

“Now that w e’re being open, le t’s address a few other M cGill m y steries,” I said. “F irst o f all, w hat’s with M aclean’s?” I asked. “ I had that thing fixed. W hy do y o u th in k M a c le a n ’s w eig h s ‘library’ so low and ‘Student Centre named after a former Star Trek cast m em ber’ so high? I still think you ca n ’t quantify the effectiveness of an educational institution but hey, it sells sweatshirts!” he beamed.

“W hat about that dedication of the Union Building to Bill Shatner?

W hat’s up with that, Bo?” I said.

“I pushed the referendum idea to th e ta b le on th a t o n e ,” h e re v e a le d . “ M c G ill stu d e n ts had been taking themselves too serious­ ly for a long time. Giving Bill the n o d lig h te n e d th in g s up aro u n d h e re , an d b e s id e s th a t, I w as reso lv ed ag ain st nam ing an o th er building ‘M cConnell’,” said Bo. At that point I ended the inter­ view. I felt sufficiently empowered — I co u ld fin ally lift the glossy c o a tin g o ff o u r id e al p ic tu re o f M cGill. Yes, now that the M cGill m yths had been exposed and the o rd er o f our school revealed, we co uld g et to th e hearty m atter o f forging a proud and true identity.

U n fo r tu n a te ly , th e p o s t­ m ortem o f my tale prom ises little hope. The D aily refused to run my story, featuring instead a piece on the epidem ic outbreak o f athlete’s foot in Mongolia and the failure of the U.S. to take action against the p lag u e. M y ro o m m ates w o u ld n ’t listen to my story, tossing insults at m e as they ran o ff to the gym. A flood o f revelations had been effort­ le s s ly d a m m e d by an im p o sin g block o f apathy. So I am reduced to u sin g th is space. H o p efu lly you, unlike m ost M cGill students, will decide to care. Take it from Bo, he knows.

The world is a place of many smells. We take them with us where ever we go. In many ways, odours define who we are. From the stench of the passing ‘Brutman’ to the more traditional fragrances of onions and fish, our smells betray our hopes, our fears and our h ab its. T hey are a searchlight w hose sw eeping pass offers a brief, revealing glimpse into the dark, litter-strewn alleys of our lives.

Smells are indeed one of life’s true paradoxes. At once a thing of fragrant beauty and yet a favorite instrument of oppression in the arse­ nals of the crass. How does the glori­ ous Shish Taouk become the insuffer­ able breath which accom panies its consumption?

As children pass through life’s many tribulations, experience stains the purity of their innocence. They are molded by the influences of the en v ironm ent into w hich they are thrown. The development of a smell is no different. With the ease of a tw ist of this or a dash of that, it is

m an ip u lated and crafted into the desired fragrance by its human mas­ ter. For this reason, they are fast becom ing a fav o u rite tool o f the uncivilised’s cruel trade.

Dear Mr. Manners, A friend of mine went to Japan on an exchange. She had just arrived and was out with her host family at a very expensive and classy restaurant.

She was incredibly tired after the long flight and was feeling rather ill.

She phoned her headm aster co m ­ plaining that she was feeling sick and he advised her that it would rude to leave the dinner table and that she should stick it out. She hung up, tu rn ed around and p ro ce ed ed to vom it onto a hot plate. The puke began cooking and the smell became unbearable, filling the restaurant with a most unpleasant odour and forcing its evacuation. My mother always reminds me every time I go abroad to be mindful of my comportment as inevitably it will help to create opinions regarding my native land. “You are an ambas­ sador o f your country so conduct yourself properly,” she will say as she brushes the dandruff off my blazer and sends me on my way. In light of this thought, let us examine the situa­ tion at hand. A C anadian student arrives in Japan on exchange. She is taken in by a host family with per­ haps no p rio r ex p e rien c e w ith Canadians. Hoping to ease her transi­ tion into an unfamiliar culture, they take her to a fancy restau ran t. In response to their eager attempts to welcome her, she spews onto a hot plate, leaving her hosts to ponder re sta u ra n t e tiq u e tte in C anada.

Shocked, perplexed and curious, they consider the im plications o f their guest’s conduct. A show of apprecia­ tion for the meal and its hearty por­ tions? Or worse, convinced that they have just witnessed a Canadian tradi­ tion, they keep it in mind for next summ er’s trip to British Columbia.

Perhaps she is not to blame. After all,

Still, European den­ tists were at least using tongs to pull teeth; the Chinese, on the other hand, used levers and in southern Arabia bad teeth were smashed out with stones.

Toothpicks also have a long history. Several pre­ historic artefacts discovered in upper A ustria and the Crim ea have been identified as possibly being tooth­ picks, though our first positive identification comes from the epistles of the Greek writer Alciphon, who lived in the second century BC. Toothpicks became extremely ornate by the late medieval period, and many people m ade their living fashioning intricate silver or ivory toothpicks.

The toothbrush appears to have been first used in Arabia, though these “Siwaks” looked more like mascara brushes than proto-Oral Bs. The Prophet Mohammed is alleged to have been fastidious about dental hygiene, commending the siwak on the grounds that it “makes the breath fragrant, dries the phlegm, sharpens the eye and opens the constipation”. Mohammed still preferred the toothpick, though. He is said to have joked that the angel Gabriel commended the toothpick to him so often that he was afraid he might lose his teeth because of their frequent rubbing. That Mohammed. Such a kidder.

European folk rem edies for toothache are a rich field for ephemerologists.Transferring one’s toothache to som e o th e r o b je c t w as v ery p o p u la r. In n o rth ern Germany and Holland, a favourite remedy for toothache was to unearth a coffin nail, touch one’s aching tooth with the nail and then hammer the nail into a tree. In Brunswick, this act was to be accompanied by the chant­ ing of a little ditty which went: “Nail, I com plain to thee/My tooth, it bothers me/In me it leaves/In thee it stays/It w o n ’t have anything to do w ith m e forever­ more.”

There are of course many other folk remedies too numerous to examine, including the practice of biting the heads off live rodents and hanging their heads in a bag around one’s neck to ward off toothache. I will simply conclude by noting that the most common Czech folk remedy for toothache was to chew on hemp seeds. Or at least, that’s their story and they’re sticking to it.

The Faculty of Ephemera People often ask me why I, the Dean of the Faculty of Ephemera, bother writing a column in a student news­ paper. Do I not have meetings to go to? Paperwork to complete? Fundraising to do?

These people obviously have no conception of what it is like to be a Dean. All my “subordinates” are PhDs. Ever tried getting a group of PhDs to agree on anything?

It’s like entering a hair-splitting competition against a crack team o f Jesuit barbers. As soon as profs get tenure, they think they’re experts on everything and their infinite wisdom must be sought on every tiny issue. For example, M cG ill’s new sexual harassment policy has been held up entirely because two tenured professors (“experts”) - a Business Law prof and a Sanskrit teacher, respectively - neither understand the modern definition of sexual harassment nor comprehend the implications of the Anita Hill fiasco, and have succeeded, through bla­ tant misinformation, in getting other faculty members upset about it.

Frankly, writing for this newspaper is soothing in comparison. Dealing with my professional colleagues is like having teeth pulled.

D entists are really a fun bunch. (Now th a t’s a segue!) It must have something to do with their having the highest suicide rate o f any occupation in N orth America. Just take a look at Appolonia, the patron saint of dentists. Most professions choose patron saints whose stories in some way relate to a success in their profes­ sion. Not dentists, though. Appolonia was, according to the Rom an M artyrology, “a virgin o f advanced age” (Tori Spelling, anyone?), and a devout Christian living in Alexandria in the Third century. One day, during a routine anti-Christian riot, Appolonia had all her teeth knocked out by a mob and was then martyred. This is a success story?

Dentistry has a very long history. Egyptian mum­ m ies have been discovered w ith false teeth made of wood and metal buttons. Etruscan skeletons from the fifth century BC have been found with dentures fash­ ioned from ox teeth held together by gold rings.

It was the Romans who made the first real inroads into dental science. They were the first people known to have discovered what cavities were, and, being industri­ ous folk, set about filling them. However, their choice of filling material might be considered somewhat less than propitious; lead and lint were the most commonly used substances.

Pierre Salducci, the coordina­ tor o f the event, is pleased with the outcom e o f the festival and hopes that it will provide an exam ple for other gay, lesbian and bisexual lit­ erary com m unities to follow suit.

As a gay w riter and a literary c r it ic w h o w o rk s f o r R a d io Canada, Salducci has considerable interest in the exclusion o f litera­ ture by b isex u als, gays, and le s­ bians from the m ainstream .

“W hen such literature is pub­ lish e d it is u su a lly set asid e by m a in strea m m e d ia b ecau se they a re a f r a id to s h o c k th e ir a u d i­ ences,” stated Salducci.

H o w e v e r, th e f e s tiv a l w as designed to not only give literature o f the gay com m unity a voice, but to o ffe r in fo rm a tio n to a n y o n e who is interested.

“Every w riter w ants to be uni­ versal, w ants to be able to address the general audience but the only w ay to do that is to receive recog­ nition by a concerned audience. So it is here w e reg ro u p so w e can p r e s e n t o u r s e lv e s a n d a ll o u r w orks to the general audience. It is here w e find our voice,” conclud­ ed Salducci.

Chris Carter, adm inistrator o f L esbians, Bisexuals, and G ays of M cGill, offered his opinion on the event. “ I th in k a w a r e n e s s a t an y lev el is in h eren tly a g o o d thing,

Salducci has m ade a concert­ ed effort to ensure that the festival does not exclude the heterosexual com m unity at large by affiliating w ith organisations that aren ’t spe­ cific to the hom osexual com m uni­ ty. W hile the festival w as held at and supported by U Q A M , it also r e c e iv e d s u p p o r t fro m th e In te rn a tio n a l W r ite r ’s U n io n o f Q uebec an d it received publicity in v a r io u s m a in s tr e a m p r e s s sources.

T he hig h lig h t o f the festival w as the a rriv a l o f M a rie -C la ire Blais on W ednesday night. Blais is v ery w e ll-k n o w n in th e lite ra ry com m unity and has been nom inat­ ed for several literary aw ards for m a n y o f h e r w o rk s in c lu d in g L ’Exile, and Le Loup.

“Basically it is about fictional characters sitting around “Lavon de Pins.” They have been sitting there for six hours and are gloomy, urban fatigue type people. The m usic is about their daydream s and rotates among five characters and each of th e ir in d iv id u a l d r e a m s ,” he explained.

The M cGill com m unity w elcom ed A benaki singer, storyteller and film -m aker A lanis Obom sawin last Tuesday, O ctober 25 as part o f the M uriel V. Roscoe A nnual Lecture. The annual forum was sponsored by the M cG ill A lum nae Society and the M cGill Center for Research and Teaching on W omen.

The lecture series was founded in mem ory o f the professor whose nam e it bears, honoring her outstanding contribution to higher education o f women. O bom saw in’s lecture, in keeping with this theme, was enti­ tled “W om en o f First N ations — Spirit of G enerosity.”

O bom sawin began her address with a personal anecdote relating the struggle for funding that she encountered when trying to m ake one o f her first films. The United N ations declared 1975 the ‘Y ear o f the W om an’.

To celebrate this event, the N ational Film Board approached Obomsawin to produce and direct a film about native w om en. Funding, how ever, proved to be a bigger challenge than expected.

It w asn’t until O bom sawin em barked on a personal door to door cam paign in O ttawa that $35,000 was raised and production on the film “M other o f M any Children” (1977) was able to begin.

Com m encing with the statement, “there is no he and no she”, the film displayed the fundam ental egalitarian nature o f a cross-section o f First Nation tribes. The film docum ented that although men and w om en had an equal basis, fam ily stru ctu re, h isto ry and trad itio n s w ere traced through m aternal lineage. A ccordingly, everything from art and music to herbal rem edies were passed down in this manner.

A 108-year-old Cree w om an recounted the creation story from her heritage. “G reat Spirit created w oman first, and she was the m other of many children and he had great affection for her.”

Obom sawin provided a brief history o f N ative peoples in Canada.

She highlighted in particular the contributions made and injustices suf­ fe re d by m a n y F irs t N a tio n w o m en sin c e th e a rriv a l o f th e firs t Europeans in North America.

Coping with chronic illness

A d a p ta tio n to th e n ew dem ands w ill v ary w ith different onsets. If the onset is sudden, as is the case w ith a stroke, the fam i­ ly is forced to adapt quickly. In a situation w here the onset is often g rad u al, lik e can cer, the acco m ­ m o d a tio n m ay be e x te n d e d and therefore easier.

“T he problem , usually, is that after long periods o f accom m oda­ tion you can have exhaustion.”

A c c o m m o d a tio n in v o lv e s looking at the roles the ill individ­ ual and the fam ily m em bers hold before the onset o f the illness, and seeing w hat roles are possible for th e m a t th e p r e s e n t tim e . T h e financial, psychological, physical, an d e m o tio n a l re so u rc e s o f the individual and the fam ily m ust be taken into consideration.

com m unity, w om en w ere able to create businesses for th e ir h u sbands. It w as not until v ery recen tly that these w om en w ere recognised for w hat O bom saw in believes to be their “im portant econom ic role in this country’s history.”

A m odem and perhaps m ore troubling exam ple o f injustice arises with the issue of heritage rights. W ith the passing o f the Indian Act in 1869, any native w oman who m arried a non-native man was automatically exclud­ ed from her tribe and her culture. She had no right either to inherit from her ancestors nor live on her reserve, and upon death she could not be buried in the cem etery o f her own tribe. The Federal G overnm ent sought to put an end to the 116 years o f discrim i­ nation in 1985 w ith the passing o f Bill C31. This federal law re-instated the native statu s o f w om en w ho co u ld p ro v e th eir heritage. However, this right was extended only to her children.

It is the generous spirit o f the native w om en w ho have been suspended betw een two contrasting cultures for over a century that Obom sawin w ished to em phasize. She asserted that the lack o f recognition from either culture is painful. “W hen it com es from your own fam ily you d o n ’t heal. It’s like a cancer inside.”

“In our world the w orst thing you can do is to be stingy,” stated Obomsawin. For this reason, the “spirit o f generosity” was taught to every fem ale native child.

O b o m s a w in c o n c lu d e d w ith th e th o u g h t th a t to em b race th is sp irit is to secure a b etter w orld. She b eliev es th at Canadians can learn from their co u n try ’s aboriginal heritage.

His music fails to fit under any record store f rie n d ly c a te g o ry , u n le ss HMV ever decides to open up a ‘g o o d ’ se c tio n . B ut B u ck ley is n o t co n c ern ed w ith h is in a b ility to rid e u n d e r a n e a t la b e l. “I ’v e always been on the fringe of everything, it’s always just b ee n m e and a c o u p le o f misfits. It’s not safe to like me.”

If The W a r h a d n ’t alluded to all these topics and had concen­ trated on ju st one o f these issues, it w ould h a v e b e e n an e n jo y a b le tw o h o u r s o f esca p ism in the classic H o lly w o o d sense.

B ut it tries to push the au dience from one

extrem e em otion to another and, by the cred ­ its, m o st v iew ers are drain ed and ready to leave. To add the ‘c u te ’ elem ent, there are a h a n d fu l o f p re c o c io u s c h ild re n sc a tte re d throughout the m ovie and, o f course, in the en d th e y are th e o n e s w h o e n lig h te n th e gro w n -u p s and tell the au dience w hy v io ­ lence is not the answer.

T here is, how ever, a stellar perform ance g iv e n by E lija h W o o d , w h o p la y s K e v in C o s t n e r ’s son. H e is the m ost b e lie v a b le a c to r (so rry C o s tn e r g r o u p ie s ) in th e m ovie. H is p erfo r­ m ance is sen sitiv e an d m u lti-la y e re d an d h e b e lie v a b ly portrays the gam ut o f em o tio n s called upon by the script.

He goes fro m b ein g a te n -y e ar o ld in cen sed by a n eig h ­ b o u rh o o d riv a l in a d o n u t sto re to b ein g em otionally supportive o f his parents in their tim e o f need. W ood also has the m ost d iffi­ cu lt role to play because he is the one who h as th e g re a t in sig h t an d show s th e o th er kids that courage is not proven by fighting.

B u t even h e gets tireso m e after he b reak s into tears for the um pteenth tim e. T he other children are also endearing and m ay succeed in sucking in the type o f audience w ho liked H om e A lone and The M ighty D ucks, but the rest o f you w ill probably w ant to pass.

T h e slow balladic feel o f ‘C at Turned B lu e’ provides a fine show case for his vocal gymnastics, giving a new tw ist to a tire d fo rm u la w ith its h y p n o tic drum beat in the b ack ­ g ro u n d . T h is a lb u m ’s d iv e rs e instrum entalisation w orks like the noises o f a boisterous crow d on a b o a rd w a lk , w h en all n o is e an d m o v e m en t b ec o m e h arm o n io u s.

G o o d ‘ol so lo b lu e s ro c k e r Jonathan Richm an sat reminiscing as he phoned from his Indiana hotel room last week. “Montreal is one of my favourite cities to play. On a good night, it is the warmest audi­ ence in North America.”

No kidding. This is from a man w h o g o t a b u n c h o f us c la ssy M o n trealers, sittin g sn u g ly w ith beers at our little tables, jiving and m ash in g p o ta to ‘5 0 s-sty le to his bouncing tango beat.

R ich m a n is a se a so n e d and c h a ris m a tic so lo p e rfo rm e r. H e sh a m e le ssly w o rk ed th e cro w d , w h ich w as c h o c k -fu ll o f th e Richman cultists who stormed Café C am p u s O cto b e r 2 7 th . R ichm an gyrated Elvis-style in his dress shirt and pants while fans cat-called and sc re a m e d o u t fo r h is s ig n a tu re songs.

“I feel completely comfortable p la y in g alo n e, i t ’s my fav o u rite

thing to do. This thing, the band, ‘the guys’, is me.”

R ichm an is tak in g his N orth A m erican to u r alone, p ick in g up drummers as he goes. He hooked up with local legend Rob Viola for his Montreal show. “ I ’v e h a d m an y b a n d s , an d sometim es I prefer playing with a drummer. But I ’m real fussy about drummers.”

H o w e v e r, “ th e k id re a lly w o rk ed o u t” R ich m an co n c ed e d after the show.

T he even in g w as m arked by e v e ry th in g fro m B e a tle s an d C hubby C hecker covers to a few m etal-lite raw k guitar solos and a n u m b e r o f fin e d a n c e n u m b e rs.

However, in his originals, Richman stu c k to v e ry s im p le p o p -so n g structures. R ichm an’s basic guitar rock is marked by lyrical silliness and good ‘ol folk song sentiment.

His set included fan favourites like “ T h e B a se b a ll S o n g ” an d “ T h e Greyhound Bus Song”.

“The only reason I write songs is because I just want something to sing. I ’m a singer first; it ju st so happens that I make up songs, too.”

“A lot of the time, I don’t even try. Som etim es I d o n ’t even write them down.”

W hen th e T rib u n e sp o k e to R ichm an last w eek, he explained that “singing in Spanish changes the way I sing in English, somewhat... not in the rhythm, but the sound of the language, the way it flows.”

O n Thursday night, Richm an sang not only in Spanish, but also a g rea t deal in F ren ch , so m etim es tra n sla tin g his songs as he w ent along, and ending his encore with a tra d itio n a lly m e lan ch o ly F rench ballad.

As for his upcoming album, “I s ta rte d [re c o rd in g an d m ix in g ] September 26 and ended October 4.

It w asn’t rushed at all. Well, maybe a little rushed.”

Both team s entered the gam e with a 1-1 record.

A gainst C algary, the M artlets found them selves trailing m ost of the gam e. T he half-tim e score had th e red and w hite b ehind 37-31.

T h e M artlets clearly had trouble penetrating the D in o ’s defence.

The Stingers added a 36-yard field goal early in the second quarter to take a 10-6 lead. M cGill attem pted to cut the margin to one with a field goal, but had to settle for a single point when Andrew Boon m issed wide on a 31-yard effort.

Stinger running back Farell DuClair took the handoff and leapt into the zone, but he was rudely met in m id-air by M ike G erm ann and Dale Bracewell. The ensuing collision knocked D u C la ir b a c k w a rd s an d p re v e n te d the Stingers from scoring a knockout punch.

McGill finished third in the conference standings, and a conference final at home seemed unlikely. The #5 ranked conference champion Ottawa Gee-Gees were upset by the unranked Bishop’s Gaiters 29-20 in the other O-QIFC semi-final. T he M artlets are happy with their progress and the road ahead.

Women squeak into soccer final Men’s rugby earns berth in final In Quebec Student Sports Federation semi-final soccer action last weekend, the first-place M cG ill M artlets took on the fourth-place Concordia Stingers in a two gam e h o m e -a n d -h o m e se rie s. D esp ite both games ending deadlocked in ties, the M artlets claim ed a berth in the league final by virtue o f a unique point scoring system that gives tw o points for every goal scored by the visiting team.

W ith the firs t gam e at C o n c o rd ia ending in a tw o-tw o tie, and the gam e hosted by M cG ill a scoreless draw , the M artlets took the series four points to two.

In the first gam e on Friday at Loyola C a m p u s, M c G ill w e n t to w o rk on Concordia as soon as the opening whistle blew, em barrassing them on their hom e field in the first h alf. S ara P en tlin to n scored early, and Julie M aughan followed up in good form with a goal of her own, making the score two to nil. Looking to pad its lead, the Red and W hite scored a third goal, but it was called back on an offside whistle.

By the end o f the first half, shots on goal were 15-2 in favour of the Martlets.

Suddenly, the second game at McGill gained overwhelming importance for the Martlets.

Sunday’s gam e was a sleeper howev­ er, as both team s had trouble producing any offence with the game ending in a 0-0 tie. It would seem that both teams crum­ bled under the pressure of the match. For th e f ir s t tim e in r e c e n t m e m o ry th e M cGill w om en’s soccer team faced elimi­ nation, and barely held the Stingers to a tie.

“W e w ere relieved that we tied but we were not happy with our play at all as a team,” said Greer.

Redmen hockey still winless after 3 games

The M cG ill R edm en hockey squad took to the ice to face off against their conference rivals, the O tta w a G e e -G e e s a n d th e U n iv e r s ité du Q u é b e c à T ro is R iv iè re s (U Q T R ) P a trio te s la st weekend.

Following a disappointing loss to the G ee G ees on F riday night, the Redm en came close to a huge upset over the defending champion Patriotes. Despite dropping a 13-1 preseason decision to U Q TR, the Redm en looked poised and ready for the visiting team, com ing away w ith a 3-3 draw follow ing o v er­ tim e m in u tes. P a trio te b ac k sto p Je an -P a sca l L em elin ro b b ed the Redmen on their scoring opportu­ n itie s all n ig h t lo n g by tu rn in g a w a y 29 M c G ill s h o ts . P ie rre Gendron, however, M cG ill’s rook­ ie sensation, responded to a quick Patriote opening goal at 1:21 of the firs t p erio d , by p o ttin g one for McGill.

O ther goals for M cGill came courtesy o f assistant captain, Luc Latulippe and Luc Fournier which put the Redm en ahead by a score o f 3-2 and headed them on their way to a well deserved two points in the “win” column. The Redmen outshot the Gee-Gees 16-9 with Todd M arcellus and A ngers leading the charge against a stubborn O ttaw a d efe n ce. S earin g sh o ts from the point by Benoit Leroux and fancy dekes and strong forechecking by M arcellus highlighted the M cGill attack; but alas, nay bob.

T he boys in red , com ing off two emotional wins last w eekend, trav e lle d dow n the 401 to play in a couple of exhibition games in the h e a rtla n d o f so u th e rn Ontario and came up emptyhanded.

The first game, held at M cM aster U n iv e rsity in H am ilton, O ntario, pitted th e R e d m e n a g a in s t th e m y th ic a l G ry p h o n c r e a ­ tu re s fro m G u e lp h . T h e close contest was indicated by the tied 35-35 score at the h alf. By g a m e ’s end how ever, the Redm en had c o m m itte d 37 tu rn o v e rs and a ten-point fourth quar­ ter lead to lose by a final of 84-80.

strong perform ances from C h ad W o z n ey , w ho had te n p o in ts an d n in e rebounds playing in front o f h is h o m eto w n cro w d , and Rick Varisco and Ryan S choenals w ho n etted 23 points apiece.

On S atu rd ay , a little fu rth e r d ow n the T ra n sCanada in Guelph, Ontario, th e M c G ill c a g e rs lo s t again, this time to a strong te a m fro m M c M a ste r University.

“The M a ra u d e r s ,” ac co rd in g to h ead co ach Ken Schildroth, “are prob­ ably the num ber one team in the country, but we were knocking on their door.”

If M cGill was knock­ in g , M c M a ste r w as answ ering. They beat the M cGill boys convincingly in a 91-74 decision. McGill w as once again rew arded with a strong performance from sophom ore W ozney, who had a 23 point total,

and from veteran forw ard T o d d M c D o u g a ll w ho ac co u n ted fo r 26 po in ts.

A lth o u g h R ed m e n turnovers were m inim ized in the game, the team still m a n a g e d to fa ll b e h in d early, trailing 52-44 at the h a lf. U n ab le to m o u n t a h ero ic co m eb ack ag ain st the strong team from steel town, the Redmen headed hom e pocketing a second loss on the weekend.

W h en th e w e e k e n d w as o v e r, th e R e d m e n were left with a pre-season record of 2-3. Despite the tw o lo s s e s , coach S c h ild ro th w as p le a s e d w ith h is te a m s p e r f o r ­ m an ce and is o p tim istic ab o u t the u p com ing se a ­ son. “ T h e te am p la y e d hard. We battled,” he said.

“We can beat those teams, if we can leam how to fin­ ish. It was a good road trip show ing that we can play

with anyone in the co u n ­ try.”

McGill rowing wraps it up B y A llana H enderson

The McGill rowing crews put in a strong showing at the O U AA /O W IA A c h a m p io n s h ip s in S t. C a th e rin e s , Ontario last weekend, ending their sea­ son w ith three first place finish es in th e ir fin al o u tin g on the w ater. T he trip le cro w n w as w on by th e lig h t­ w eight w om en’s eight crew, the heavy­ w eig h t m e n ’s fo u r and the w o m e n ’s n o v ic e team u n d er e x tre m ely w indy conditions, in which several boats were subm erged by waves and unable to fin­ ish their respective races.

W ith last w eekend’s win, the light­ w eig h t w o m e n ’s eig h t sq u ad p o ste d th e ir th ird consecutive victory at the Ontario championships. The crew con­ sists o f W hitney Sedgewick (coxswain), M elinda A nderson, M ichelle Pam pin, S am a n th a M c D o u g a ll, A nni T o rm a, M ia G o o d rid g e , K a tr in a K n a p p e , M artha Crombie, Ali M oses and coach M ike Murphy.

In the h ea v y w eig h t m e n ’s fours division, the w inning team was m ade up o f B en Storey, G eo ff K lein, Pete B e e rm a n ,T o m L a u r ie , S a ra h P a p e

(coxswain) and coach Ian Spears.

The w om en’s novice crew was led

In addition to the solid first place finishes was a second place showing by th e h e a v y w eig h t m e n ’s eig h t. T h ird p la c e w as se cu red by M cG ill in the lightweight m en’s and w om en’s fours, the heavyweight m en’s singles and dou­ b les, as w ell as the w o m en ’s n o v ice “B” boat eight. Finally, a fourth place finish w as p osted by b oth the m e n ’s n o v ic e e ig h t an d th e h e a v y w e ig h t w om en’s eight.

T hese successes fo llo w a strong season in which the M cGill crew com ­ p e te d in th e U n iv e rs ity o f T o ro n to sprints, the H ead o f the Trent regatta, the Brock U niversity Invitational, the B a u sc h an d L o m b I n v ita tio n a l in Rochester, New York, the Head of the C h arles re g a tta in B o sto n , and th e ir ow n M c G ill In v ita tio n a l. V ic to rie s were attained by various crews at each o f th e r e s p e c tiv e c o m p e titio n s .

Particularly im pressive was the m en ’s heavyw eight fours winning the Head of

the C harles com p etitio n for the third consecutive year. No crew had won that r a c e m o re th a n tw o y e a rs ru n n in g before.

T he su ccess o f th e 1994 seaso n c o m e s h o t on th e h e e ls o f th e C o m m o n w e a lth G a m e s v ic to r ie s attained by some of the current McGill r o w e rs a n d u n iv e r s ity a lu m n i in A ugust. T h ese in clu d e Sandi B ourk, S a ra h P a p e , R a c h e l S ta rr, B ra d C ro m b ie , W ill T in m o u th , H e n ry Herring and Tosha Tsang, who have all com peted for Canada and are currently training for the 1996 Olympics. Bourk, Starr and Crom bie, a current graduate s tu d e n t at M c G ill, w on g o ld at th e Games and went on to com pete at the w o rld ch a m p io n sh ip s in S ep tem b er.

Martlet Volleyball team upset the defending champion, Laval Rouge-et-Or, in opening regular seasons play this weekend at the Currie Gymnasium. The Martlets defeat­ ed the traditionally strong Laval team by scores o f 15-11, 15-9, 15-10 in straight sets.
